    MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners asupported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learni

and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeti

    the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order

achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and looforward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looki

forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken

this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teacheare committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and pl

the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positi

challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holist

    needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of t

    Zora Neale Hurston

The Early Life of Zora Neale Hurston

Zora Neale Hurston was born on Notasulga, Alabama on 7 January1891. Her parents were Lucy Ann and John Hurston; she was the

5th of 8 kids. John Hurston was a Baptist preacher, carpenter, andtenant farmer while Lucy Ann was a teacher at the local school. They didnt stay long in Alabama though because her family madethe move to Eatonville in Florida which happened to be one of thevery first all-African American towns that got incorporated in theUS. Zora Neale Hurston was just three when they made the move.Zora Neale Hurston has confessed that she often felt likeEatonville was her home and she sometimes claimed that it washer birthplace.Later on, her father became the mayor of Eatonville; she glorifiedthe town in her stories and often said it was a haven that allowedAfrican Americans to live in any way they wanted to and theydidnt have to be controlled or adhere to white society mores. The year 1901 was quite the eye-opener for young Hurston since itwas the very year some schoolteachers from the north visited thetown and gave her books. These books introduced her to the worldand beauty of literature and this is perhaps why she describes her

birth as something that happened in that place and that year. Shespent the rest of her childhood years in Eatonville and describeswhat it was like in an essay she publishes in 1928 entitled How ItFeels to Be Colored Me.Hurstons mother died in 1904 and her father got remarried to awoman named Matte Moge. This was considered a minor scandal

in their town. Rumors flew that he had relations with Moge evenwhile Lucy Ann was still alive. Hurston was sent a way by herparents to attend boarding school however she got expelled asthey stopped paying her school fees. Later on, she worked as a

maid to the lead singer of the Gilbert & Sullivan theatre companylead singer.By the time 1917 rolled in, she attended Morgan College which wasthe high school division of the Morgan State University which is aHistoric All-Black school in Baltimore, Maryland. She graduated in1918 and in that same year she began to attend Howard Universityand became the earliest recruit of the Zeta Phi Beta. She helpedfound The Hilltop which was the student newspaper. Also, she

took courses in Greek, Spanish, English, and public speaking. Sheearned her associates degree in 1920. A year after, she wrote JohnRedding Goes to Sea which is a short story that gained her entryinto the Alaine Locke literary club called The Stylus. She then went on to Barnard College at Columbia Universitywhere she was the only black student. There, she received her BAin Anthropology; she was 37 years old. While she was studying atBarnard she worked with Franz Boas to conduct an ethnographicresearch. She also worked with Margaret Mead and Ruth Benedict

for various anthropological works. As an Adult

She married Herbert Sheen, her former classmate at Howard and ajazz musician, in 1927. He later went on to become a doctor butthey divorced in 1931. Eight years later, she married Albert Pricewhile she was holding down a job at WPA. He was 25 yearsyounger than her and the marriage ended after just seven months.During her later years, she not only wrote but she also served as a

faculty member at the North Carolina College for Negroes. She putup a school for dramatic arts in 1934 at Bethune-Cookman Collegein Florida. When the year 1956 rolled in she was given an award by thecollege to recognize her achievements. The college remains

dedicated to preserving and letting people know about her legacyto black culture. Her Works

She travelled quite extensively especially to the American South

and Caribbean where she got immersed in the local culture andtraditions as part of her anthropological work. Charlott OsgoodMason sponsored her work in the South and her work Mules andMen was based on that work and is often looked upon as a classicfolklorist work.In 1936 to 37, she made her way to Jamaica and Haiti; an expeditionpaid for the by Guggenheim Foundation and it was in 1938 thatTell My Horse was published.

Her Later YearsThe year 1948 wasnt a good year for Zora Neale Hurston as it wasthis time that she was falsely accused of molesting a child; a 10yearold boy. The case was dismissed and she was in Honduras at thetime of trial but her personal life was rocked by the scandalousaccusation. She spent her last years as a writer for newspapers andmagazines. In 1957, she moved to Fort Pierce where she took jobslike substitute teaching and even becoming a maid once more.

Her DeathShe died of hypertension heart disease on 28 January 1960 and wasburied at the Garden of Heavenly Rest Cemetery in Florida. Hergrave was unmarked for some time but literary scholar CharlotteHunt and novelist Alice Walker found it and decided to mark it forZora Neale Hurston. She is remembered for her vast literary worksand her contributions to the field of anthropology. In Fort Pierce, they honor her name in a festival they call Zora Fest; a 7-dayfestival usually held at the end of April.

    NEWS UPDATE

Stress-induced loss of NG2 glial cells in the

    brain causes depression: (03rdDecember, 2015)

A research team has discovered that when a rare type of glial cells, called NG2 glia, are depleted from the brain in mice, depressive-like behaviors occur.

A visit to the gas station: Protein helps power

up DNA repair: (03rdDecember, 2015)In a game-changing study, researchers have shown that theenzyme cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1), which plays a key rolein DNA repair, also leaves the nucleus to boost cellular energyproduction. By irradiating normal cells, the team showed thatCDK1 turned up production of ATP, cellular energy packets that --in this case -- provided the necessary power supply to fix theradiation-damaged DNA.

Study suggests links to broader trends beyond

Back-to-Sleep campaign for safe infant sleep:

(02ndDecember, 2015)While the campaign to improve infant sleep environments has longbeen associated with declines in sudden infant death syndrome(SIDS), an analysis of 30 years of data suggests that Back-to-Sleepis one of several trends behind reduced rates of SIDS. Other factorsinclude improved prenatal and neonatal care, reduced maternalsmoking during pregnancy, increased breast feeding and declinesin teen pregnancy. These factors are linked to the biologicalunderpinnings of infant vulnerability to SIDS.

Coffee compounds that could help prevent type 2diabetes identified: (02ndDecember, 2015)Much to coffee lovers' delight, drinking three to four cups of coffeeper day has been shown to decrease the risk of developing type 2diabetes. Now, scientists report that they have identified two

compounds that contribute to this health benefit. Researchers saythat this knowledge could someday help them develop newmedications to better prevent and treat the disease.

Study finds flame retardant exposure higher in

infants than adults: (02ndDecember, 2015)A growing list of major retail stores have pledged to stop sellingfurniture containing flame retardants, which research suggestscould cause developmental problems. Despite the trend, however,it could take years before widespread exposure declines. And now,a study has revealed more bad news: Infants could potentially beaffected the most. The report also looks at potential exposureroutes.

    Pharmacists' study helps prevent antibiotic-

induced kidney failure: (01st December, 2015)When researchers noticed that some hospital patients given twocommon antibiotics developed kidney failure, they decided to takea closer look. Their study led to closer monitoring of patientsreceiving vancomycin and piperacillin-tazobactam due to anincreased risk of kidney damage.

Scientists use light to switch viral activity anddeliver cargoes to cells: (01st December, 2015)Light is helping scientists control both the infectivity of virusesand gene delivery to the nuclei of target cells. The researchers havedeveloped a method to use two shades of red to control the leveland spatial distribution of gene expression in cells via anengineered virus.

Blood levels of Ebola virus are predictive ofdeath: (01st December, 2015)The levels of virus in the blood (viremia) for patients with Ebolavirus disease are strong predictors of fatality, according to newresearch. The study found that in the week following symptom

Gene therapy restores immunity in children and

young adults with rare immunodeficiencyGene therapy can safely rebuild the immune systems of olderchildren and young adults with X-linked severe combinedimmunodeficiency (SCID-X1), a rare inherited disorder that

primarily affects males, scientists from the National Institute ofAllergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the NationalInstitutes of Health, have found. NIAID's Suk See De Ravin, M.D.,Ph.D., is scheduled to describe the findings at the 57th AmericanSociety of Hematology Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.SCID-X1 is caused by mutations in the IL2RGgene that preventinfection-fighting immune cells from developing and functioningnormally, leaving affected infants highly susceptible to life-

threatening infections. Transplantation of blood-forming stemcells, ideally from a genetically matched sibling donor, is alifesaving treatment for infants with SCID-X1. Those without amatched sibling often receive stem cells from a parent, which onlypartially restores immunity. Such patients require lifelongtreatment and may continue to experience complex medicalproblems, including chronic infections. In the current study, researchers tested the safety and effectivenessof gene therapy combined with low-dose chemotherapy in fiveSCID-X1 patients aged 7 to 24 with worsening immune systemsdespite one or more previous transplants from a parent. Theinvestigators removed stem cells from the patient's bone marrowand used a lentiviral vector, which was developed in collaborationwith St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, to deliver anormalIL2RGgene to the cells. The corrected cells were infused

back into the patient after a low dose of chemotherapy to help thestem cells establish themselves and begin producing new bloodcells. The first two patients to receive the therapy showed substantial

improvements in immunity and clinical status, with one patientcontinuing to improve three years after therapy. Despiteimprovements in immunity, the second patient died of pre-existing, infection-induced lung damage two years after receivinggene therapy, suggesting the importance of early treatment beforeorgan damage becomes irreversible. The three other patientsreceived the therapy three to six months ago and are beginning toshow improvements in immune function. Researchers are

continuing to monitor the surviving patients.Jeenatara BegumAssistant Professor
