But whatever they that is, the Bulldogs will have to do it without Trey Kiser — widely regarded as one of the top players in the state on both sides of the ball in 2018. All Kiser did last year is rush for 2,572 yards and 39 years during a stellar senior campaign last season. He also recorded 131 tackles and eight sacks on defense. “We lost the best play- er we ever had in Trey Kiser, without a doubt,” Dixon said at the team’s annual Media Day. However, the cup- board is far from bare in the Sulphur football camp. The Bulldogs return 13 players who started at some point last season. “We have a lot of kids back. We have a good nucleus to build around,” Dixon said. “We have high ex- pectations. The kids worked extremely hard this summer. We’ve got some talent. We just have to have some kids come through,” he con- tinued. “We have a lot of youngsters that will be playing quite a bit, but they’re pretty talented. We’ll just have to see how they do.” OFFENSE The Bulldogs also must replace graduated starting quarterback Cole Johnson. Junior TJ Todd is the most likely candidate to take over as the SHS signal carter, but he has been fighting a nagging injury during the preseason. Sophomore Reese Ratchford and senior Mace Mobly could also be in the quarterback chase. “We’ve got some tal- ent back there,” Dixson said. The only reason run- ning back Tavius Mc- Donald didn’t have huge numbers a year ago is because he was play- ing behind Kiser. The talented senior amassed over 800 yards rushing as a junior. He’ll be unleashed on Sulphur foes in 2019. “He averaged about 10 yards per carry last year. He’s got a lot of speed, and he’s a good player,” Dixson said. Junior Logan Smith is expected to see his fair share of totes this season. “He probably aver- aged around nine yards a carry. He’s really talented. They’ll give us two good choices to give the ball to,” Dixon said. Dixon has several can- didates at wide receiver, but it’s senior tight end Price Daube who could lead the team in recep- tions. “Our tight end has as good hands as we have on the team. He can catch the ball extremely well,” he said. Dixon said his cup runneth over along the offensive line. Lead- ing that charge will be returners Garrett Trett, Andy Carter and Sage Borders. Carter is a senior, and Trett and Borders are juniors. “We have a lot of linemen back. We have good depth in the offen- sive line,” Dixon said. DEFENSE The Bulldogs have always been known for a stout defense — Sul- phur surrendered just 23 points per game last year — but that unit was hit hardest by gradua- tion. “We lost more on defense, and that’s where we have to replace some kids. But I think the ones we’re going to put out there can run, which helps a lot,” Dixon said. “We have two back in the secondary, one or two linebackers and one or two in the front.” By the end of the season, Dixon said he expects the SHS defense to shine. “It depends on how much they improve. 2019 Bulldogs Roster

SULPHUR — The Sulphur Bulldogs are coming off a runner-up finish in Class 3A, and veteran coach Jim Dixon is excited to see what his team can do for an encore.

“We lost the best play-er we ever had in Trey Kiser, without a doubt,” Dixon said at the team’s annual Media Day.

However, the cup-board is far from bare in the Sulphur football camp. The Bulldogs return 13 players who started at some point last season.

“We have a lot of kids back. We have a good nucleus to build around,” Dixon said.

“We have high ex-pectations. The kids worked extremely hard this summer. We’ve got some talent. We just have to have some kids come through,” he con-tinued. “We have a lot of youngsters that will be

playing quite a bit, but they’re pretty talented. We’ll just have to see how they do.”

OFFENSEThe Bulldogs also

must replace graduated starting quarterback Cole Johnson. Junior TJ Todd is the most likely candidate to take over as the SHS signal carter, but he has been fighting a nagging injury during the preseason.

Sophomore Reese Ratchford and senior Mace Mobly could also be in the quarterback chase.

“We’ve got some tal-ent back there,” Dixson said.

The only reason run-ning back Tavius Mc-Donald didn’t have huge numbers a year ago is because he was play-ing behind Kiser. The talented senior amassed over 800 yards rushing as a junior.

He’ll be unleashed on Sulphur foes in 2019.

“He averaged about

10 yards per carry last year. He’s got a lot of speed, and he’s a good player,” Dixson said.

Junior Logan Smith is expected to see his fair share of totes this season.

“He probably aver-aged around nine yards a carry. He’s really talented. They’ll give us two good choices to give the ball to,” Dixon said.

Dixon has several can-didates at wide receiver, but it’s senior tight end Price Daube who could lead the team in recep-tions.

“Our tight end has as good hands as we have on the team. He can catch the ball extremely well,” he said.

Dixon said his cup runneth over along the offensive line. Lead-ing that charge will be returners Garrett Trett, Andy Carter and Sage Borders. Carter is a senior, and Trett and Borders are juniors.

“We have a lot of

linemen back. We have good depth in the offen-sive line,” Dixon said.

DEFENSEThe Bulldogs have

always been known for a stout defense — Sul-phur surrendered just 23 points per game last year — but that unit was hit hardest by gradua-tion.

“We lost more on defense, and that’s where we have to replace some kids. But I think the ones we’re going to put out there can run, which helps a lot,” Dixon said. “We have two back in the secondary, one or two linebackers and one or two in the front.”

By the end of the season, Dixon said he expects the SHS defense to shine.

“It depends on how much they improve. One of the keys for us is how quickly our defense comes around,” he said.
