MESSAGE FROM THE STATE PRESIDENT
TOCA KJT Member Of The Year . . .
CHRISTOPHER L. URBANKJT State President
Congratulations to Msgr. John Peters of Hallettsville for being named the TOCA KJT Member
of the Year. A d i n n e r r e c o g n i z i n g
members of Czech ancestry from the many Czech organizations throughout the state was held at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange on Saturday, March 28. This happened to also be Palm Sunday weekend so Msgr. John was unable to be in
attendance. You can read about Msgr. John’s biography below. Congratulations once again Msgr. John!
Memorial DayDon’t forget our fal len
veterans on Memorial Day observed on Monday, May 25! Never let us forget those that have fallen in the line of duty, serving the country that they loved! They paid the ultimate price while “keeping watch” over America and we owe the freedoms that we hold today
due to their vigilance. In the infamous words of William Cullen Bryant, “Ah, never shall the land forget.”
Graduation 2015The 2015 KJT Scholarship
recipients can be found on pages 10-12 of this issue. Congratulations to these winners and all KJT members graduating from high school and college this year! We wish all of you the very best in your future endeavors.

Msgr. John was born of Czech-German ancestry and is very proud of his heritage. He is half Czech and half German on both sides of the family. His father’s parent’s names were Peters (formerly Peter) and Krueger, and his mother’s parent’s names were Stock and Svetlik.
Msgr. John joined the KJT
in the mid-sixties when he was in the seminary and has remained active in the KJT since. He served as State Spiritual Director during the KJT’s 100th Anniversary and presently serves as chaplain for several

KJT State Family DayThe KJT Officers and Directors
hosted KJT members and guests at the KJT State Family Day on Saturday, April 25 despite some very bad weather the day before. The team pulled together and hosted a nice event.
I hear the food was great as usual and all in attendance had a great time.
Thanks to everyone who worked to make this event a success! I missed Family Day as my daughter Laney had her very
first district tennis tournament that same day. I’m going to do a little “dad brag” here . . . she and her partner Becca Heinrich won the 7th Grade District 21-4A – “A” Division Doubles Title so we were out of town until late that evening. Congratulations ladies!
Catholic School Tuition GrantThe deadline for the Catholic
School Tuition Grants is Sunday, May 31. Please be sure to have your application that can be
found on page 20 of this issue either postmarked or in the KJT Home Office by May 31. This year, the board authorized 100 – $100 grants to KJT members who are attending a Catholic
School and will be in grades Kindergarten through 11th grade for the 2015-2016 school year. The grants will be awarded through a random drawing here at the KJT Home Office.
Happy Father’s Day to all you Dads out there! I wish you good golf, good fishing, or whatever makes you happy!

the KJT offers. He is one of the founders of CAPA – the Czech American Priests’ Association – in 2001 and has served as treasurer for the organization since the beginning. He has also been a member of the Czech
Heritage Society for several years. He celebrates Mass for the Polka Fest in Hallettsville every spring and he celebrates Mass each October during Czech Heritage Month with the St. Mary’s Czech Singers leading
the music. While on staff at St. Mary’s seminary, Msgr. John arranged for the Sts. Cyril and Methodius celebration for a couple of years.
Msgr. John also led a pilgrimage to the Czech Republic. During this pilgrimage, he arranged for a student from the Czech Republic to come to Hallettsville to attend school for one year. He deemed it a very positive experience.
The TOCA award recipient has exemplified during his life that he feels that it is very important for us to know our ancestry and that it is extremely important to keep our culture and heritage alive for future generations.

FRATERNAL ACTIVITY REPORT
Three Checks In The Bank . . . April Is A Busy Month
MICHAEL REZNICEKKJT State Fraternal Activity Manager
SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
REVEREND ROBERT E. (BOB) KNIPPENBERG
KJT State Spiritual Director
Go Into The World – Proclaim The Gospel To Every Creature“Go into the whole world and
proclaim the gospel to every creature.” (Mk 16:15)
Thursday, May 14 (this year) is the traditional day for the celebration of the Ascension of the Lord. Most dioceses in the United States, however, have transferred the celebration to the Seventh Sunday of Easter (May 17 this year). In any event, the Ascension of the Lord is one of the most important celebrations in the Catholic liturgical calendar because it is when the Church receives her “great commission,”
her marching orders, so to speak: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature”!
In an Ascension homily, Saint Josemaria Escriva once summed up Christ’s “great commission” to His Church this way:
Christ has gone up to heaven, but he has given to all honest human things a specific capacity to be redeemed . . . And so I keep on repeating to you that the world can be made holy. We Christians have a special role to play in sanctifying it. We are to cleanse it from the occasions of sin with which we human beings have soiled it. We
are to offer it to our Lord as a spiritual offering, presented to him and made acceptable through his grace and with our efforts. Strictly speaking, we cannot say that there is any noble human reality that does not have a supernatural dimension, for the divine Word has taken on a complete human nature and consecrated the world with his presence and with the work of his hands. The great mission that we have received in baptism is to redeem the world with Christ. We are urged on by the charity of Christ to take upon our shoulders a part of this task of saving souls.
It is proof that the incentive programs in place now benefits our less than 300 member societies. The first check for 2% refund
is simple; just fulfill a few simple requirements. The second check is a level award and for Level 2 for 3% growth equals $200. The third check is growth incentive, for 3% growth multiply number of members times $1 adds up to good news for our societies.
April begins with Hot Dogs It’s April 14. I had the pleasure of working with State President Christopher L. Urban, State Vice President David M. Wagner and
State Director Ray Pokorney in Austin taking part in the Texas Fraternal Alliance Picnic on the South Lawn at the State Capitol. We served lots of hot dogs, chips and water.
On Sunday, April 19, I had the pleasure to be in Houston for the Harris County Czech Heritage Festival. My wife Melba, son Aaron and I helped State President Urban and State Vice President Wagner with the KJT-sponsored Kolache Eating Contest. We had winners
in all four races and with a great cheering section. Then on Saturday, April 25 I was back in La Grange for the State Family Day and there was fun for all. Then the following day, Sunday, April 26, I was back in La Marque for the Queen of Peace Spring Festival. La Marque Society #119 sponsored the Beer Garden. As always Thank You for the opportunity to serve.
You can contact me at (409) 771-8101 or email [email protected].

As a child living in the country I g r e w u p u s i n g an outdoor toilet or “outhouse” as
we called it. My grandfather, Jan Kana, built it in the early 1900’s and even though it has been moved several times, it still stands today. Now it is serving another purpose as a deer stand.
But let’s get back to its original purpose – an outdoor toilet. Prior to 1952 we had no running water in the house so this outhouse was used by all the family . . . Now there was no such thing as tissue or toilet paper. The only paper in this outhouse was an outdated Sears & Roebuck catalogue. This catalogue was about 2 1/2-3 inches thick and one could tell by the different pages left in it if it was time for another. Let me explain: the softest pages that were torn out first were the index yellow pages. After these were gone then came the black and white pages with the pictures of the goodies one could order. The last and remaining pages to be used were the colored pages, which were slick and not too absorbent. But not to worry, by this time the Spring/Summer edition in the house was expired and the new Fall/Winter catalogue would soon be in the mailbox. Mom would give me the outdated one to put into that outhouse where it would serve a better purpose. I would spend much time sitting in that out house thumbing through that catalogue and wishing and dreaming of all the available goodies in it. There were toys galore from cap pistols and holsters, bicycles and BB guns. Later I wanted a .22 rifle and spent many a day sitting there and dreaming of a lever action .22!
Of course , in my later years, as I grew out of my toy years, my eyes would wander to the section that held the women modeling swimsuits and lingerie. I often wondered how those women allowed themselves to be photographed with just their lingerie on! Later on, as we got electricity, running water and indoor plumbing, that outhouse was no longer needed so it stayed idle for many years. When I got old enough to deer hunt, I sawed off the four posts anchoring it to the ground and by tilting it onto a lowboy trailer, I moved it to my neighbor’s deer pasture.
In the early 70’s, KVLG radio station would hold a deer hunting contest and one of the prizes given was a cash prize
for bringing in the first buck deer killed opening day! Well, for about six years straight I was the one to claim that prize. Of course, having my outhouse deer stand just four or five minutes driving time to the radio station helped!
Now for a deer hunting story. Every deer hunter has a favorite one and here is mine: I had been married for about 7-8 years to my sweet wife Carol. She is an outdoor kind of gal but not a deer hunter. As a matter of fact, she doesn’t care for guns at all. But this particular year she said she would like to go sit in the stand with me while I shot that first buck. I always said I’m willing to try anything once so making her promise she’d stay real quiet, I said “OK”!
As I prepared to walk to that deer stand opening day of the season, I packed my gun, a few extra shells and a hunting knife. Well, here comes Carol behind me with her arms full and asking for assistance. Seems like she was going on a picnic with cookies, snacks and a large wide mouth thermos filled with piping hot chocolate! Under her arm she also carried a recent copy of “Better Homes & Gardens” magazine. “That’s to read in case I get bored,” she said. As we started walking into the woods, she asked where my flashlight was and I told her we didn’t need one cause the moonlit sky was all we needed to find the deer stand.
As we situated ourselves in that crowded 3x3 ft. outhouse, we sat there in silence for a few minutes and after stating she was cold, Carol decided to open the thermos and pour herself some hot chocolate to warm up. Now I did mention she had this wide mouth thermos. It was designed to hold either food or drink. Why, you could stuff a half chicken into it, drumstick and all! So when you started to pour hot chocolate from it, you know it came out fast! Well in that pitch-black deer stand she proceeded to unscrew the cup from the thermos and placed it between her knees. What she didn’t realize at the time is that she placed this cup up side down between her knees. As
she started to pour this hot, hot chocolate onto the flat surface of the cup, it gushed out and ran all over her lap. Like the saying goes “It didn’t take long for her to find out it was hot!” It is hard for me to describe just what happened after that. She screamed and jumped up and completely forgetting her promise to keep quiet, started a barrage of words I cannot print at this time. Needless to say, I did not bring in that first buck to KVLG that day. Carol never got to read that chocolate soaked Better Homes & Gardens magazine either.
Like I said earlier in this story, “I’ll try anything once”. If I don’t like it, I have the option of not doing it again. Since that day I have chosen to exercise that option. I now deer hunt alone and she reads her magazine in the comfort of her own home!
P.S. In reference to that toilet tissue segment earlier in this story, I do recall that during the Christmas holidays, Dad always bought a whole wooden crate full of apples.
These apples were each individually wrapped in a soft, purple tissue paper. I guess this was done so that if one apple got rotten, it wouldn’t spoil the whole box.
Anyway, we saved every one of those tissues and kept them in the outhouse. At least we had some real soft toilet paper throughout the Christmas holidays!
Pictured by the unique deer stand are Florian Kana, Stephen and Brennan Kana.

District IV Family Day Staged At Old Settlers Reunion Hall
The District X Family Day held on Sunday, April 19 was a success considering we had to contact everyone to move it from the Nueces River location to the Moravian Hall, due to flooding. (Above) The District X Family Day attendees
gather for a group picture. We still held the Easter Egg Hunt and had three Special Basket drawings. We had tacos, chips, dip, drinks and lots of desserts. We played bingo and everyone received a door prize. A Big “Thank You” to all who donated this year and helped our District Family Day be a joyful event. (Below) Shown (left to right) are Alana Williams, Emma Bernal and Kendall Williams who received Special Easter Baskets at the District X Family Day.
District X Enjoys Successful Family Day
By Shirley Pokorney, DISTRICT IV PRESIDENT
Kids and adults alike enjoyed a fun-filled Easter festivities themed District IV Family Day at Old
Settlers Reunion Hall in Round Rock.
Business in the short meeting included lowering of the district dues rate, discussion of the upcoming annual Coushatta bus trip on Monday and Tuesday, July 27 and 28, and honoring outgoing district officer Jim Caballero with a token of appreciation for his many years of dedicated service (first as Secretary/Treasurer and ending as Vice President).
The remainder of the day was pure entertainment with a raffle emceed by the Temple society, silent auction bidding battles mediated by the Austin society, and a Bingo Blast courtesy of the Manor society.
For the kids, the highlight of the afternoon had to be the massive Easter Egg Hunt on the beautiful park grounds, which was coordinated by the Granger and Elgin societies. Baskets and bags were bulging with treat-filled eggs even before the addition of the many prizes won.
For all , the Pflugerville society’s relaxed, scrumptious pulled pork dinner accompanied by all the traditional sides and visitation with both old and new District friends was the perfect way to end a lovely day!
Finding the golden egg sure does pay off in BIG prizes.
Nora Sanchez and her Manor comrades kept the Bingo lively with comedic commentary and terrific prizes.
These are fabulous finds! We are ensuring we get the final bid when time is called on the silent auction.
Artie Munson keeps kids busy getting their bags decorated while the Easter Bunny prepares the hunting grounds.
These special glasses really DO help you zoom in on hidden eggs!
That rascally bunny thought I wouldn’t find these in the fence post. Clever . . . but not as clever as me!

The New Year 2015 is well on the way here in Texas with much diversity in the weather. We are all eager for the summer weather and showers, and God has provided. Members have had two meetings so far this year where the same officers from last year were elected to stay in office. The members also set the schedule for functions
in 2015. Check the KJT events calendar on pages 18-19 in this issue for the society’s upcoming functions.
The society has sadly lost several members including A d o l p h S v o b o d a , F r a n k Olsovsky and Robert Bohuslav. The society has not had any new insurance members last year, so it did not attain any level of achievement.
It would be to everyone’s advantage to join the society
in all or some of its activities during the year. Please check with the society officers if you are coming from out-of-town to make sure there is no change in the schedule for society meetings or events. All meetings are held in the KC House behind the church at 7 p.m. until further notice.
The society needs all members to participate by donating items for the Annual Garage Sale and/or purchase items in order to be successful this year with a donation to the Religious Retirement Fund. Last year we raised $1,018.93 with thanks
to members and especially the family of Benno and Jane Hellinger in Austin.
A Reminder: Keep your eyes and ears open for any possible new members for the KJT, be it a family member, friend, fellow parishioner or any Christian. There are good and affordable insurance plans for those precious new babies, grandbabies, and great-grandbabies.
Please contact the Home Office at (800) 245-8182 or any of the officers below to get a representative out to help recruit new members. You know all the advantages of being a member of the KJT!

I was born in Italy in 1381 and married at an early age. I was married for 18 years but my husband was murdered by a feuding family. I then joined the Augustinian religious sisters and became known practicing mortification of the flesh and for the efficacy of my prayers. I am often portrayed with a bleeding wound on my forehead because I experienced a partial stigmata. I am the patroness of abused wives and heartbroken women and, along with St. Jude, am the patroness of impossible causes. My feast day is May 22. Who am I?
