Purchasing Second-hand Children’s ProductsBuying second-hand children’s products is an affordable way to equip a nursery. But it can also be dangerous as some items can be out of date and no longer safe.

Some children’s products, especially cribs and bassinets have caused deaths and have been the subject of numerous recalls.

Check our website, www.ca.gov.bm before you purchase any children’s products second-hand.

hildren are empowered by their contribution to the world around them. There are numerous benefits for

children to volunteer including the op-portunity to learn life skills such as coop-eration, problem-solving and team work. Volunteering also promotes a healthy lifestyle and choices – children who vol-unteer are less likely to become involved in at-risk behaviours. Through volunteer-ing, children often meet people from diverse cultural backgrounds, lifestyles, ages and income levels. Volunteering also helps break down stereotypes at a young age, by teaching tolerance, understand-ing, and generosity.

By serving others, children learn to be caring, respectful, and selfless. Children who share their time and talents with others learn that they have valuable gifts to contribute. Volunteering helps children develop positive self-esteem and learn values such as compassion and gratitude. They also develop academic skills like reading (with seniors), writing (cards for children in the hospital), and math (measuring ingredients while pre-paring food at a feeding centre).

Volunteering heightens psycho-logical, social and intellectual develop-ment and growth which is invaluable amongst children especially in today’s technology-driven and “instant-gratifi-cation” society. When children volunteer they are exposed to a variety of social and environmental issues which helps them to develop interests from an early age. Volunteering is helpful for youth to

identify what they are passionate about and decide which career path they are interested to pursue.

Research indicates that children who volunteer develop a sense of com-munity responsibility. Fostering a habit of kindness teaches children not to overlook needs in their commu-nity. Children learn they have a responsibility to be part of the solution. Practicing kindness and volunteering encourages inquisitiveness as children reflect on issues in their community and how to ap-proach challenges in a thoughtful and productive manner. It also encourages a lifelong commitment to service - it’s true that children who volunteer earlier learn the importance of service and have a higher likelihood to get involved and give back to the community as teens and adults.

There are many volunteer oppor-tunities suitable for families with young children. Consider whether your children would prefer assisting with a one-time project such as collecting children’s books to donate to an organisation support-ing families and children (Teen Services). If they are interested to commit over a

longer time period then consider adopting a location to feed feral cats through Bermuda Feline Assistance Bureau (BFAB). Other examples for little ones to get involved include visiting seniors (Matilda Smith Williams Seniors Resi-dence, Packwood Home, Lorraine Rest Home, Westmeath Residential & Nursing Care Home); donating old toys to a thrift store (The Salva-tion Army); and grocery

shopping for seniors who may be housebound (“Adopt A Senior” with The Eliza Dolittle Society).

Help your children learn more about the cause they are interested to support and how to get involved by visiting The Centre on Philanthropy’s

VOLUNTEER.bm website – Bermuda’s only place to connect you with

volunteer opportunities sup-porting over 135 non-profit organisations. With a few clicks you can navigate the site and

search for the perfect opportu-nity to engage your children in our

community.Once your children have decided

on an organisation or project they wish to get involved with be sure to have a conversation with them about what to expect. Be positive and enthusiastic about volunteering and your children will follow your lead. Explain what they’ll be doing, for how long, and highlight why the task is important (i.e., “when we clean up at the beach we make it more fun for everyone to enjoy”). Most importantly, have fun! Perhaps ask another family to volun-teer or invite your children’s friends to get involved.

SOUND FAMILIAR?A woman with a once lush mane finds herself spending more time camouflag-ing the thinning areas on her scalp…

A man in his prime sees the telltale recession of his hairline or some pre-mature thinning of his crown…

Both of them see a reflection in the mirror that looks older than they feel. What’s next? Thanks to recent advances in hair loss diagnosis, medical

treatments, and hair restoration procedures, men and women who want to maintain, enhance or restore their hair now have many viable alternatives at their disposal.

The key is finding a knowledgeable and compassionate medical specialist who can help guide them to their goals.

By the time you’ve noticed some thinning, you’ve already lost up to 50 percent of the hair in that area. It’s therefore critical to get immediate help to address the loss at the earliest possible stage.

STEP #1: Seek a consultation.Should you ask your friend, a hairstylist, a doctor? The first, crucial step in protecting or restoring your hair is to visit with a reputable hair restoration physician.

Hair Thinning? Here’s the next step…

By Kyjuan H Brown, M.D & Alan J. Bauman, M.D.

Page 21: Go, Play, See Directory 2014

Go. Play, See…With the Kids! 19

During a one-on-one consultation with a doctor who specializes in hair loss, you can learn about the causes of hair loss and hair thinning. Non-invasive genetic hair loss testing and a microscopic scalp analysis may be performed. You can also learn about the various effective medical strategies and develop a realistic, results-oriented treatment plan to reach your goals.

If your treatment plan includes hair transplantation, you will learn how today’s advanced artistic microsurgical tech-niques comfortably restore hair in a way that is 100 percent undetectable and never ever “pluggy.”

STEP #2: A multi-therapy approach. It’s important to realize that hair transplantation isn’t the only option. A well-rounded multi-therapy approach includes non-invasive therapies to protect the hair you have:

• Propecia: FDA-approved prescription pills (for men) safely halt further hair loss and/or restores growth in 90% of patients

• Low Level Laser therapy: In-office or at-home treat-ments improve your hair without side effects

• Topical treatments: Lotions such as FDA-approved Minoxidil can add thickness and stimulate hair growth

• Nutritionals: Support hair growth and improve hair quality

• Stopping the progression of hair loss with non-invasive treatments is an important part of any hair restoration treatment plan.

Alan J. Bauman, M.D.Hair Restoration Physician

Now available in Bermuda via the Northshore Medical & Aesthetics Center, under the direction of Dr. Kyjuan H Brown, medical hair restoration is a viable option.

Dr. Kyjuan H. Brown successfully completed the Bauman Certified HairCoachMD™ Training Program, which edu-cates medical profes-sionals on how to detect and monitor male and female pattern hair loss, perform hair re-growth treatments, as well as provide patients with actionable information and effective preventa-tive treatment options.

STEP #3: Undetectable hair transplants. Should hair transplantation be recommended, healthy hair follicles from the back of the scalp are harvested individually and then transplanted into areas where thinning has oc-curred. Hair transplantation is a detailed, delicate procedure that requires not only technical skill but an artistic eye. Me-ticulous attention to detail delivers undetectable results.

Patients watch movies, eat lunch, listen to music, or nap during the process that may take several hours. Along with new less-invasive surgical techniques like the no-scalpel, no-stitch “FUE” with NeoGraft, patients can be assured that transplantation is a relatively pain-free procedure that heals quickly with minimal interruption in their routine.

STEP #4: Appropriate expectations. Within days the transplanted area is healed and hair growth begins in about two months. Visible changes can be appreci-ated in four to six months, with a full result in about a year. Some patients may require more than one session to reach their hair restoration goals. And the best part is that the trans-planted hair lives and grows permanently!

Mom and Dad, if your son or daughter has just started middle school, then welcome to your new role: ‘Personal Assistant’ (PA). Yes, I used to jokingly say this to my daughter: “Oh, I’m your PA now!” Or, I would tell my family and friends: “Yes, I’m the unofficial assistant and I must know her schedule and home-work deadlines better than my own stuff!”

Naturally, the response was a look of confusion and comments like “Oh, I think you are exaggerating. It can’t be that bad!”

But, the truth is—I am! And, if I am completely honest, it is a role I did not readily accept initially. (But, don’t push the panic button yet. Please be assured that we are in a better place since M1 and so will you! As with every new experience in life, it is a process and it is our responses to these new experiences that will deter-mine our successes or failures.)

Transitioning from Parent to

By Angela N. Young, BA, MS

“P.A.”!

Page 23: Go, Play, See Directory 2014

Go. Play, See…With the Kids! 21

When I am coaching my clients, I remind parents to take a deep breath before they react and simply reflect on their own teen years. Moms and Dads, if we are completely honest, we, too, like our sons’ and daughters’ did not have all of the answers. Instead, it was ‘trial and error’ until we found our rhythm. And to be fair, we have to give our teens the same grace period.

Students with weak executive skills, in particular, need more than just an ‘adjustment period’ and this is where a parent’s role evolves into a PA. As your teen’s PA, please allow me to share my top three tips to guide you along this academic year:

• Always check your teen’s planner/agenda. Your teen’s planner/agenda should be treated like gold. Everything you and your teen need to know regard-ing assignments and deadlines should be captured in the student’s planner/agenda. Don’t view this as a dreadful chore. After all, this one step can easily circumvent demerits and detentions!

• Go beyond the surface. In other words, don’t just simply ask “Do you have any homework today?” In-stead, take at least 15 minutes every school evening to review the contents of your teen’s planner/agen-da—with them! And, if there are any blanks, ask your teen to fill them. If they cannot, then coach them on how to get the answers they need. Here, they should be instructed to ask a classmate or even the teacher whether or not, an assignment was given for that specific subject. Do not give it a ‘blind eye’.

• Master the art of multi-tasking. Remember, in pri-mary school, you may have been given one or two assignments, but middle school requires a whole lot more! Yes, the art of multi-tasking will be a great strategy to aid all teens in completing multiple as-signments and more importantly, making deadlines!

While we want our teens to develop solid executive skills and ‘own’ their life journeys, the truth is we still need to stay close by. Sometimes, I feel I am my daugh-ters’ personal assistant and then, there are days I feel like her ‘wing man’. But, one thing I am confident of and it’s this: I’ve created an environment where she knows she can make mistakes and together we’ll figure it out!

I said this before in my previous article but it’s worth repeating. Moms and Dads, we are our teens’ first teachers. Through us, they garner insight, courage and strength. When we teach them, then they will truly fly like eagles—and become who God planned for them to be. We simply need to show them that we believe in them and therefore, they should believe in themselves too.
