GO PUBLIC ASKS…LEAdING PHOTOGRAPHER MARTIN PARR’S CURRENT ExHIBITION ‘BLACk COUNTRy STORIES’ IS AN AMAZING STUdy OF A yEAR OF PEOPLE, CULTURE ANd LIFE IN THE REGION.

WE CAUGHT UP WITH MARTIN PRIOR TO THE LAUNCH ANd PUT TO HIM qUESTIONS SUBMITTEd By FOLLOWERS OF THE PUBLIC’S TWITTER PAGE (@_the_public).

This is the first time you’ve worked in the Black Country. What did you find most inspiring about working in the region?I’ve been really taken aback by the friendliness of the people in the Black Country. There’s a real sense of community togetherness within the region which has generated some really interesting stories. I’ve enjoyed working with different communities, for example Indian, Polish and Yemini, and learning about different cultures and capturing the diversity of the region.

What’s the story behind Black Country Stories? How did the project come about?I was initially approached by Multistory at the end of 2009, and was looking forward to working in a region with such a strong industrial heritage and identity. I was interested in the Black Country’s industrial background and the challenges faced in the area but also really encouraged to learn more about the plans for regeneration and future prospects.

Throughout the year you must have come across some fascinating stories – what was your favourite Black Country story? It was really fascinating seeing how St George’s Day is celebrated. The parade we visited was a really full-on celebration, and everyone was so enthusiastic. People are proud of where they are from in the Black Country and there is a real sense of community and being in it together. Having travelled up and down the country, I am yet to see anything quite like it.

What would you like people to take away from the exhibition? That’s not really up to me to say, although it would be nice for people to get a sense of, and share in the enthusiasm of, the people in the photographs.

Black Country Stories is the start of a longer project. What are the next steps for the project?I’m looking to roll out the project to the wider Black Country and extend it to Dudley, Walsall and

Wolverhampton. Ultimately we’re looking to bring them together to create a larger Black Country collection. At the end of the exhibition at The Public, the images will be given to Sandwell Community History and Archive Service so they will be available to residents to view.

What other projects do you have in the pipeline?I’m currently working on similar projects in Atlanta, Perth on the West Coast of Australia and of course the extended Black Country Stories to Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

What was your inspiration when you first took up photography? My nosiness! My camera allowed me to get away with being nosey!

What advice would you give for aspiring photographers?Be nosey! I also think it’s important for people to select a subject that they feel strongly about.
