Welcome Contents

Welcome to the Go Yorkshire Autumn digital magazine that will help you plan your stay or day out and make the most of what Yorkshire has to offer.

Being the largest county in the United Kingdom, Yorkshire has plenty of wide-open spaces to explore and whether you live in the countryside, town or city you will discover nearby places to escape to and enjoy. Now more than ever our mental health is being challenged and what better way than to get outside, enjoy ‘God’s own country’ and connect with nature. A walk in the countryside, a drive across the Dales, a stroll along the sea-shore or a picnic at Robin Hoods Bay with the family are just some of the things you can do, and they are free!

Alternatively, why not visit one of our wonderful theme parks, museums, attractions, great houses or heritage sites. Check out a list of some of our favourite places in the Days Out Sections for the latest information on what is happening. Wherever you are in Yorkshire there is so much to see and do.

GILLING WEST WALK

From the church, walk along the village street (the B6274) heading in a north easterly direc-tion towards the A66. After about 150m cross the bridge over Gilling Beck (called ‘Gilling Bridge’) and a few metres further on turn left off the road through a wooden kissing gate to follow a public footpath heading for Hartforth. There is a clear path to follow across the fields with good views of the surrounding countryside. After about 1.4 km you come to a wooden filed gate with a kissing gate on the right-hand side that leads down a tarmac drive into Hartforth. Continue straight ahead along the drive for about 170m. Walk past the back of the stone farm buildings on the left and to your right, are some lovely stone cottages. Bear left round the corner of the building and walk down the track past Home Farm.As you turn the corner you will be impressed by the imposing Gothic frontage to the farm-house. At first sight it does not look modern, but is in fact a very recent building and winner of the 2009 award for ‘New building in a Georgian context’. Follow the track down to a stone arch bridge over Hartforth Beck and cross the bridge. Continue along the path across the field to another watercourse called Smelt Mill Beck. Cross the second bridge and follow the path up a steep bank past a large oak tree on the left. Follow the path to the edge of the field and a line of trees with a wide dry ditch next to them. Continue uphill, along the line of trees, and the path crosses the ditch. Continue up the field on the other side of the line of trees. From the end of the line of trees, the path continues across the grassland to some woodland.

Follow the path through the woods (approx. 150m), with a dry-stone wall on the right and through the gate at the end of the wood on to a farm access track to Crabtree House Farm. Continue along the access track. There is a wall on the left and it drops down to a left-hand bend and a gateway with a cattle grid at the bottom of the slope. From the gateway, con-tinue uphill along the access track with the wall on the left climbing towards some woodland on top of the hill. About 300m from the gateway, turn left off the track through a field gate to follow a bridleway with a wall on the left-hand side. 500m along the bridleway you come to some more woodland where the path turns steeply uphill around the woodland boundary. After about 400m you come to the farm buildings at Gillingwood Hall Farm. Continue be-tween the farm buildings and past the farm house. On the left hand side of the access road is Gillingwood Hall, built in the early 1600’s for the Wharton family. Follow the farm access road for about 400m from the farm house. The ac-cess road from the farm is called Old Hall Lane and turns a sharp left at the bottom of the drive gently descending down the hill where it meets Waters Lane. Turn right and just by the house on the left-hand side, you will see a stile hidden in an overgrown gap in the hedge. Either cross over the stile and follow the footpath back to a kissing gate that leads into the graveyard of St Agatha’s Church or alternatively walk to the end of Waters Lane and turn left along the road back into the village.

Easy Circular Walk (approx. 3 ¾ miles/6km)Gilling West is a picturesque village situated between Richmond and the A66 in the far north of the county. Park near the entrance to St. Agatha’s Church where there are a few parking spaces marked out or along the village high street. There are two good village pubs, we recommend The White Swan or The Angel or alternatively the Mainsgill Farm Shop on the A66 is another popular spot.

Discovering Dalby Forest

Dalby Forest is nestled on the southern slopes of the beautiful North York Moors National Park. It’s loved by regulars and new visitors alike, because it really is the great Yorkshire forest with something for everyone. Glacial valleys to the south create a unique ‘rigg and dale’ landscape. To the north it sits on an upland plateau. For visitors this means really varied terrain where you are regularly rewarded with breath-taking views. Dalby is home to an abundance of internationally important wildlife species. It’s also a designated dark sky ‘Milky Way’ site. You can discover the magic of our unique landscape covering 8000 acres or simply enjoy a relaxing coffee with friends amid beautiful scenery. Our fantastic visitor centre cafe serves cakes, snacks and hot meals or you could check out our new catering facility in Low Dalby courtyard. Whatever your mood or energy level, there’s something to suit.

Getting further into the forestExplore the changing colours and landscape of the forest by hiring bikes, following walking trails or going for a run. Routes are clearly waymarked and you can pick up maps at the visitor centre. Whether you want to get active, be close to nature or seek out some tranquillity, Dalby has the perfect spot for you. Low Dalby is just the start of a magical journey of discovery further into the forest. Why not explore areas you’ve not been to before… Get involved, be inspiredWe have Go Ape in Low Dalby, and in the courtyard there is Dalby Forest Cycle Hub for bike hire and Hidden Horizons, our outdoor activity partners. For the adventurers among you there is Dalby Activity Centre up at Adderstone for pre-booked fun. Young families will love the Gruffalo orienteering trail that you can explore together. And not forgetting our play areas and Enchanted Wood, which are perfect for kids needing to burn off energy!

Spotlight on Sheffield - Sheffield is picnic heaven for families as it is the ‘greenest’ city in England in terms of tree coverage with 4 trees for every resident. It is also the only city that has a third of its area within a National Park. Some of our favourite places for children to visit are the Botanical Gardens, Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre, Sheffield Cable Water ski and Aqua Park and our favourite of 2021 – the National Videogame Museum

Spotlight on Doncaster – the large minster town of Doncaster is named after the River Don which flows through it. It is home to a substantial amount of amazing attractions to visit including the award winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park and the home of the world’s oldest classic horse race (the St Leger), Doncaster Racecourse. A must see for anyone visiting Doncaster is the fantastic new Danum Gallery, Library and Museum (DGLAM).

Interesting FactBarnsley is famous for brass bands with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band perhaps the most well-known. Formed in 1917 as a social activity for the local miners, the band is still going strong having outlived the demise of the Grimethorpe coal mine that shut in 1992. The Band has now won the national Brass Band Championships an impressive four times.

WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE WALK

Start on Main Street outside the Rockingham Arms. Facing the public house, turn right and walk through the Village on the pavement by the side of Main Street. At the end of the village, turn left onto the public footpath opposite the war memorial and follow the path across the field to Clayfield Lane. On reaching Clayfield Lane, turn right and walk along the lane, passing the converted windmill on your left, before arriving at Cortworth Lane. Turn left and walk along the pavement by the side of Cortworth Lane. After a short while you will get your first glimpse of The Needle’s Eye through the trees on your left. Continue along Cortworth Lane, carefully crossing over Coaley Lane, and you will eventually reach Cortworth House on your left. Follow the public footpath up the drive to the house. At the top of the drive, the footpath forks to the right and passes through a kissing gate. Keep following the footpath up the hill to the picturesque hamlet of Street. At Street, turn left onto Street Lane and follow the lane to Coaley Lane. Taking extra care, cross over Coaley Lane and follow the footpath which runs down the side of Stump Cross Cottage. After a short time you will reach Needle’s Eye.The path continues along the ridge with panoramic views of the Dearne Valley on your right and Wentworth Village and Wharncliffe Chase on your left. The footpath eventually descends into Elsecar, passing through farmland and an area of woodland before finally arriving at Forge Lane. If you fancy a quick detour to Elsecar Heritage Centre, carry on walking along Forge Lane.

The Elsecar Heritage Centre is a History and Craft Centre, set in the former ironworks and colliery workshops of the Earls Fitzwilliam. After visiting the Heritage Centre, retrace your steps back along Forge Lane. At the end of Forge Lane, the track splits into two public footpaths. Take the right-hand route following the path across the fields and rejoin the walk. On arriving at Forge Lane turn sharp left and follow the waymarked path across the fields and through Kings Wood. At the far side of the wood, continue along the winding track passing through Low Wood before eventually arriving at Barrow Field Lane. Turn left onto Barrow Field Lane and follow the roadside pavement towards Wentworth Village. At the bend in the road turn left onto the track marked as a public footpath and then left again along the hedged lane which is also marked as a public footpath. After a short while the track splits into two as it gently descends the hill. Follow the track on the right. As the track steadily climbs up the hillside it soon turns into a footpath. Continue along the footpath keeping the hedgerow to your left. Turn right immediately after passing over the fourth stile and follow the fence line heading towards the VillageOn the edge of the village the path meets Clayfield Lane. Pass over the stile and continue straight ahead along Clayfield Lane to its junction with Main Street. Carefully cross over Main Street onto to the roadside pavement and turn left, walking along Main Street through Wentworth village back to the Rockingham Arms.

Two hours based following gently rolling landscape. Contains a number of short easy uphill climbs. The route starts and finishes in the picturesque Village of Wentworth. It also takes in the hamlet of Street, Needle’s Eye, Elsecar Heritage Centre and Kings Wood.

Top Tips - The section through Kings Wood can be muddy during the winter, so it is advisable to take boots especially following wet weather. If you need refreshments, there are three pubs on the route, two on Main Street in Wentworth and one at the end of Forge Lane at Elsecar. There is also a shop on Main Street in Wentworth.

Spotlights on Leeds, Wakefield and BradfordLeeds - the largest city in West Yorkshire famous for it’s shops, bars and restaurants. Places to visit in and around Leeds on our ‘must see list’ include the Royal Armouries Museum, Thackray Museum of Medicine and Harewood House. Huge investment from financial institutions has seen Leeds become a financial centre with insurance companies and banks setting up in the city centre.

Wakefield – famous for its rich coal mining history, rhubarb festival and renowned ‘nightlife’, Wakefield offers much to families. The award-winning contemporary art and sculpture park at Hepworth Wakefield, the National Coal Mining Museum and Yorkshire Sculpture Park are firm favourites for local and visitors.

Bradford – the second largest city in West Yorkshire, Bradford is a compact city centre that is fairly easy to walk around. It used to be an international centre for textile manufacture with wool at the forefront earning the city the nicknames ‘woolopolis’ and the ‘wool city’ and manufacturing and finance are now the main industries. Some of our favourite attractions include the National Science and Media Museum, the Impressions Gallery, Bradford Cathedral and the famous Alhambra Theatre.

West Yorkshire

With a population of over 2.3 million, West Yorkshire consists of the boroughs of the cities of Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield alongside Calderdale and Kirklees. Many of the buildings and the architecture in West Yorkshire reflect the association that the area has had with the coal, wool and iron ore industries through the centuries.

Don’t MissXscape Yorkshire Leisure Complex, Castleford – with the tagline ‘We don’t do dull – we make memories’, Xscape has everything from skiing and trampolining to great restaurants and cinemas.

Whistlestop Valley, Kirklees – formerly the Kirklees Light Railway, this is a great place for young children with steam rides, play area and café in beautiful scenic surroundings.

Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, Halifax – ideal for kids aged up to 11 years old, the museum is designed to inspire children through hands on play. It has over 400 interactive exhibits over 6 amazing gallery spaces.

The Bronte Parsonage Museums, Haworth – the picturesque village of Haworth was home to the Bronte family and is the fitting location for this museum that celebrates their lives and literary works.

With a long and complex history, York stands out as one of the most fascinating cities in the United Kingdom with its history evident as you walk through the streets that have over 2000 listed buildings and 22 ancient monuments. York’s most important industry is now tourism and every year the city fills with millions of visitors from all over the globe. Number one on most visitor’s list is York Minster. Despite a catastrophic fire in 1984 caused by a bolt of lightning, this Gothic Cathedral has literally risen from the ashes and, with the help of some of the UK’s most skilled stonemasons and stained-glass glazers, is as amazing as ever.

WINTER WONDERS at JORVIK Viking Centre and DIG

As the days turn a little cooler, how fantastic would it be for time to be frozen on a lovely, mild winter day? That’s exactly what you can find at JORVIK Viking Centre, where visitors travel around the streets of the city that stood on the same spot in 960AD!But how do we know exactly how they lived? In our first gallery, you will Discover Coppergate, and hear how archaeologists discovered some of the best-preserved Viking remains ever found on British soil. After this, climb aboard a time capsule to travel through the streets and houses of tenth century York. Recreated from knowledge gained from over 30 years of study, you’ll see the sights, hear the sounds and even smell the odours that would have assaulted the senses of the Vikings who came to settle, work and trade at the intersection of the rivers Foss and Ouse. Finally, head into our galleries to see real archaeological finds from the site, including the skeleton of a woman you flew past on the ride and the world-famous Lloyd’s Bank Turd, the largest fossilised coprolite (poo!) in the world! A visit you will never forget!

An archaeological adventureAt DIG in York’s St Saviourgate, hardy young archaeologists can explore our excavation pits - no matter what the weather outside. Find out how archaeology tells us so much about our past, and unearth some artefacts for yourself! If you think you are too old for digging (is anyone ever too old?), the last tour of the day at DIG is designed specifically for an adult audience. On our DIG Deeper tours, our expert team can go into far more depth about key discoveries made in York and their impact on our understanding of the city’s residents for over 2000 years. New for Autumn/Winter 2021 is a new exhibition at DIG. Archaeology Through The Lens (from 23 October), delves into York Archaeological Trust’s photographic archives and camera store cupboard to reveal images and equipment used to record the city’s history.

Plan aheadAnd if you are planning further ahead, JORVIK Viking Festival returns to the city in February 2022 with the usual host of living history, live events and stunning finale. Tickets go on sale 6 November at jorvikvikingfestival.co.uk. For more information or ticket bookings, please visit thejorvikgroup.co.uk

HAUNTED YORK

As the nights draw in, our thoughts turn to Halloween and scary ghostly tales. York has been named the most haunted city in the United Kingdom and according to the local tourism office, has been voted the most haunted city in Europe as well, with reputedly over 500 ghosts haunting the city. Many shops have their own ghost; M&S has a spooky shelf stacker who reorganises shelves at night, much to the annoyance of its staff, and if you are shopping at Jack Wills beware of who is looking back at you when you admire your reflection in the dressing room mirror! Some accommodation providers have a ghost in residence too! If you want an early morning call then why not stay in the Golden Fleece where guests have reportedly been woken by the icy hand of a Second World War airman or at the Dean Court Hotel situated opposite the Minster, guests have reported hearing the slamming of doors, objects being moved around and unusual cold spots in the rooms, even in the middle of summer.

In 1953, Harry Martindale, an apprentice plumber, was installing a new central heating system in the cellar at Treasurer’s House which is situated on the site of a roman fort. Suddenly he had to throw down his tools and step to one side whilst he watched a battalion of Roman Soldiers march through the cellar. He described the soldiers as wearing green tunics and carrying round shields which local historians did not believe as this did not tally with other evidence at that time. Only some years later, when another site was discovered, with findings of soldiers wearing green tunics and carrying round shields was Harry finally believed! For folks that just love a good yarn, then a ghost walk is an essential pre-requisite of a visit to York. Unsurprisingly there are as many different tours and walks as there are ghosts in this city but one of the best is the Original Ghost Walk. Established in 1973, it is believed to be the world’s first exclusive Ghost Walk and takes place nightly from the famous pub that floods, the King’s Arms, on Ouse Bridge.

Every season we will be highlighting one place that we think deserves to be discovered by all people visiting Yorkshire. This Autumn, that place is the historic town of Selby in North Yorkshire. Historically, Selby was a centre for shipbuilding and for a period was the leading coal mining area in the UK. Nowadays, the main industry in the area is arable farming and Selby has also become a great place to live for those commuting to nearby Leeds, York and Wakefield. The riverfront area is being transformed with fashionable flats and shopping and eating have come to the fore with an expansion of restaurants and shopping centres both in the centre and on the outskirts of town.

Don’t MissSelby Abbey – the abbey was founded over 950 years ago and is believed to be the birthplace of Henry I.

Selby Food and Drink Festival – usually held every Summer, it is worth keeping a close eye out for the 2022 date when it gets released.

Towton Battlefield Trail – during the War of the Roses, the bloodiest battle ever fought on British soil took place at Towton. Today you can learn all about this on the highly recommended Battlefield Walk.

Discover Selby

Skipwith Common Nature Reserve - a 660 acre Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) where you are guaranteed to see a plethora of livestock, deer and rare birds.

Yorkshire Paintball Centre – for the older kids, this is home to the world’s biggest paintball bridge at over 100m long and 13ft high.

Selby Park – a 5 acre park right in the heart of Selby, it is open throughout the year and is extremely popular with children wanting to play or have a picnic.

Interesting factsSelby Abbey’s 14th century Washington Window has links to the first president of the USA and the design is said to have been an influence for the Stars and Stripes flag.

Comedy legend Tommy Cannon of Cannon and Ball fame, hails from Selby.

The Town Hall in Selby is also a live music venue and recently won the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Nightlife Award.

The Trans Pennine Trail cycleway has a direct path into the centre of York.
