Caves and Caverns at Issorcem - Hollant Vasco
One of Goa's most recent amazing discoveries these caves are obviously man-made but vertical to the ground. Cave dwellers p r o b a b l y s u s p e n d e d themselves into their rock homes with vines and then covered the entrance hole with circular stone discs at night.
Visit Our Lady of Belem church for period furniture and statuary, the twin mansions of Braganza-Pereira families and the heritage home of Sara Fernandes for a look and feel of Goa's colonial past. You can see Goa’s oldest fort wall, ruins of the 11th century Shiva Temple dating to the Kadamba Periods. The story of Old Goa begins at a rather modest s h r i n e o f S h r i Gomanteshwar up in the hills at a distance from the river. The city moved to the bank of the river Mandovi(then called the rGomti) at the fag end of Kadamba rule. Royal l i fe then revolved around the Shri Saptakoteshwar Temple (where the Church of Our Lady of Divine Providence stands today) until the Deccan Sultans made it their capital and called it E la. The Portuguese wrested it from the Adil Shah and began building the “Rome of the East” with c h u r c h e s , c h a p e l s , markets, houses and a bustling trading post. The city fell to disease and economic ru in as a consequence of religious persecution and the capital moved to Nova Goa or Pangim (Panaji) in the middle of the 19th century.

Legend has it that Lord Parshuram, the sixth
incarnation of Lord Vishnu, shot an arrow into the Arabian Sea to create Parshuram Kshetra of which Goa was one part. Known in the past as Gomanta, Govapuri, Govarashtra and Gopakapattana, this tiny state has a rich social and economic history that is reflected in its festive traditions, its arts, crafts, cuisine and architecture.
Legend apart, Goa's earliest inhabitants were the Kunbis, Kharvis, and rdother Proto-Australoid Mundari races. Goa's history dates back to the 3
century when the Mauryas ruled it. The Satavahanas, the Bhojas, the Konkan-Mauryas, the Rashtrakutas, the Badami Chalukyas, the Shilaharas and the Kadambas followed this rule.Goa’s cuisine is a blend of Islamic, Hindu and Catholic history.
thIn the 14 century, Goa fell into the hands of the Muslims of the Deccan. The Bahamanis and the Vijayanagar Kings of the Deccan were rivals over Goa. Finally, the Adil Shahs took over from the Bahamanis. The Portuguese
tharrived in Goa in the year 1510 and stayed here until its liberation on 19 December 1961. Unlike what most people think, all of Goa was not under Portuguese rule over the entire period of 450 years. The mahals (hills) of
thTiswadi, Bardez, Salcete and Mormugao were under them since the 16 century and the mahals of Ponda, Sanguem, Quepem, Canacona, Bicholim,
thSattari and Pernem towards the end of the 18 century. Four and a half centuries under Portuguese domination has left a large part of its inherent cultural artefacts in complete disarray. Ruins of temples and ancient sacred tanks lie scattered all over the state. Kaavi, its most singular contribution to the ethno-cultural wealth of the world lies unprotected, unnoticed and anonymous.
And yet, these 450 years of colonialism has produced its own unique blend of cultural output that is uniquely Goan and yet carries forward influences from the Western world. Emigration to parts of British-India (Bombay, Karwar, Hubli, Belgaum) brought back into Goa social and cultural
thpatterns from other parts of India in the early 20 century. In addition to the traditional crafts, Goa has a whole new generation of fine artists and craftsmen and women who are making forays into the contemporary art scene. There are some exquisite lifestyle stores and art galleries located in the villages on the beach that exhibit this talent. Together with Goa's unique crafts, these works of art let us know that this holiday destination is a state of substance, depth and a social fabric that serves as a model for others. In other words, a Goa of mettle, of substance, of cultural sustenance.

of Goa
A lacquerware cradle
These Azulejos in Menezes Braganza Hall are an illustration of how crafts travelled
across the sea.
One other craft that is dated to Goa's pre-colonial past is the art of sgraffito or kaavi. Kaavi is the art of rendering a design on the wall using a highly specialized technique. The wall surface is plastered in red oxide and then a design scratched out with the help of a charcoal stick or a thin brush made from the hair of a wild boar.
The excess is then dug out and the hollow portions filled in with a paste made with lime. The whole rendering is then polished over with fine muslin or a wooden spatula.
The Technique can also be reversed at times. This art originates in the temples of Goa from where it has travelled to homes where it is rendered in sanctified spots of the house. It is to the Goan cratsman's credit that when new churches and chapels were built in the 16th century, this craft was kept alive and modified into designs that suited these buildings. It was, in a way, the Goan craftsman's way of honouring a new
religion in his land with the same respect that he would accord his own. Kaavi examples are seen in temples, churches and in sacred spaces in private homes. This map shows all the kaavi art temples that are known today. Many more such gems await discovery and conservation.

Kaavi ArtGoan domestic architecture is unique to the world. Most of the houses that we see as part of our legacy can be
thdated to the middle of the 18 century. Typically, they have a sopo or a balcão in the central axis of their front facades and reception rooms in the front with dining areas and service areas delineated towards the rear. High plinths and long stairways often complete a picture of mystery and charm. Household, windows and openings fronting the road are often quick clues that give away the age of a Goan house. The older the house is, the fewer there are windows facing the
road. The more ornamental the window facing the road, the more “outward-looking” is the house and the other contribution of the Goan mason to architectural crafts is the fashioning of finials (ornaments that sit on top of roofs or gateposts) out of stone or clay for gateposts. Traditionally, these finials have been in the shape of lemon balls, soldiers, roosters, dogs and lions. While most of these are renderings of popular images, the lions are a definite hangover from the official emblem of the Kadambas.
The use of the nacre of the mother-of-pearl shell to cover windows may have originally come to Goa from Gujarat via Bassein and Diu but it took Goan carpenters to perfect the art. Glass came to Goa as late as 1890 and remained an expensive building material well into the
th20 century. The nacre of the mother-of-pearl, otherwise a waste material, was then cut into lozenge shapes and slid into wooden battens to give windows added value and beauty.
Goa's Heritage Houses
Heritage Villages of GoaThis is a coined term for villages with a fine stock of heritage houses, churches, temples and street furniture. Visit these villages to experience the continuity of Goa's social and cultural history.
For absolutely fascinating bargains and a slice-of-life in Goa in terms of local produce visit the Mapusa market place on Fridays where you will see dried fish that Goans supplement their diet with during the fishless days of the monsoon. There’s fruit and vegetables in abundance and mirror work bags and backpacks from Gujarat. Here local pottery sits cheek-by-jowl with sarees from Karnataka and silks from Maharashtra. Sample the local red rice, tamarind balls, cocum or Indian jujube and foot long bananas from the village of Moira. A wide range of chillies, mangoes and beans complete the canvas of scents and colour in this buzzing bazaar.

Panaji4
The only thing that distinguishes Panjim from any other city in India is the seven km long promenande, built on a planned grid system with a unique storm drain system and perhaps the only city in India that has been relocated stone by stone from a capital that fell to disease and ruination. The architectural styles here vary from Goan Domestic, Indian Art Deco, Indo European , Indian Baroque to British Colonial. Thios place has art combined with functionality. Apart from its architectural wealth the city has a deep treasure chest of cultural patterns and traditions.
