Fellow Goenkars, I am very honoured to be elected as the President of the Goan Overseas Association NSW at the AGM held in September 2011. It is indeed a great pleasure to serve the community and the oldest Goan Association in Australia once again. This financial year we are celebrating our Coral anniversary - 35th year, and I am looking forward to a great year ahead.

I wish to thank all who called or sent in messages of congratulations and good wishes. You can read some of those messages on our website. I consider myself very privileged to be in the company of a very talented and experienced

Executive Committee. The new Committee is willing, able and ready to achieve the objectives of the Association. Having such

a strong team behind me will give me the foundation I need to be able to serve you well. Your participation and feedback in the forthcoming events and functions will help us shape our events calendar going forward. I look forward to seeing you all at future events in large numbers. My strongly held beliefs of promoting our rich Goan heritage, culture, traditions and values will be what drives us forward and I am committed to achieve these aims. Let’s be proud to be Goans. As we look at the year ahead, membership remains our No. 1 challenge. As members, we all share a responsibility of marketing our Association and attracting new members. I am therefore calling upon you to introduce new members to the

Association. Please encourage your family and friends to join the Association. Please also visit our website regularly in order to keep yourselves well informed of the Association’s events and breaking news. well as to download function flyer’s and forms.

Some of the new features introduced include upcoming events, a live poll to capture your priorities and needs, ever-changing current news, Goa weather, a link to GOA Facebook page, a page for all our Village associations and more. You could also advertise your business on the web. Hope-fully this will assist in promoting the advertisers business as well as support the Association.

The G.O.A NSW website in last two months has undergone major transformation for the better, both visually and in terms of design and content accessibility. User-friendly navigation and easy access to articles helps us in our mission to keep our members well informed and entertained by the ever changing contents.

One of the most outstanding novelties of the new website lies in its design, which is more visual with changing banner photos of Australia and Goa and more dynamic than before. The articles are complemented by graphics and images that enrich both the text and the final composition. The new web design makes it easier to navigate the different sections and browse articles posted on the website.

Also, the web gives everyone the opportunity to share comments thus making it more interactive as

With over 4000 clicks in just over 5 weeks from Australia, Canada, India, The Middle East and Africa, we are pleased that the website has been well received and is patronised well.

We would like to thank the GOA web team for making this turnaround in a short time and the members who called us to provide feedback for continuous improvements.

You can visit us by simply typing www.goansw.com in your web browser. ( Newer Browsers just GOANSW is sufficient )

The email address for all general communication is [email protected]

The website is interactive so please feel to leave a comment

While you are there.

Know Goa Programme for Diaspora Youths from Nov 28 , 2011

The Commissioner for NRI Affairs will hold the Know Goa Programme here from November 28 to Decem-ber 12, to make the youth of Goan origin who are not Indian nationals to discover their roots.

Speaking to reporters here today, the Commissioner for NRI Affairs Edu-ardo Faleiro said that the Know Goa Programme is an orientation pro-gramme which has been formulated by his office in Goa for the benefit of youth of Goan origin in the age group 18 to 28 years who are not Indian nationals and who had no opportunity to discover their roots in Goa and in India. He said they have received about 18 applications for participation in the programme from Diaspora youths in countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Tanzania, United Kingdom and United States of America.

The applications were being scrutinized in consultation with the embassies of the respective countries, he informed. During the stay in Goa, partici-pants will be taken to educational, cultural, historical and industrial places of interest in Goa. Mr Faleiro said. They will also call on Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, Assembly Speaker Pratapsingh Rane and other dignitaries. After completing their assignment in Goa, another programme will be held for them in Delhi from December 7 to 12. They will visit the World Heritage monuments in Delhi and Agra. Their stay in Delhi will be hosted by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, he added.

SERAPHINO ANTAO - A Goan Legend... Talk of the best runners in the world, and we immediately think of Kenya! Yes, Kenya has produced some of the best runners in the world, so much so that today some even think that it is due to the Geographical make-up of the land coupled with the biological and genetic make-up of the local people of Kenya. What a big mistake. The truth of the matter is that the first Kenyan runner who made a name for himself on the international sporting stage was in fact a Goan, our very own Seraphino Antao. It was only after Seraphino proved him-self and won Gold for Kenya that other local Kenyans took up to running like he did, with fervour. Soon other African countries began to learn from Kenya and today we see besides Kenyans, Ethiopians and other Africans dominating the running scene at the international level, thanks to the example given to them by Seraphino Antao. Seraphino Antao was the son of Diogo Manuel and Anna Maria Antao who have their roots in the quaint village of Chandor in South Goa. Lanky Seraphino was a very keen sportsman right from the time he was a student at the Goan High School in Mombasa, excelling at the school sports days. How-ever, he preferred short distance running and began to concentrate on the 100 and 220 yard events. [In those days they had not yet switched over to the metric measurement!!!]. In the year 1957, he represented Mombasa at the national level and managed to break the Kenyan record in both his favourite events. Overnight he was a hero. Some say that the accolades went to his head and when he represented Kenya at the 1958 Com-monwealth Games at Cardiff, Wales he re-turned without a win. Losing at Cardiff was a wakeup call for young Seraphino which he took very seriously. He knew he had the potential to win and time was not in his favour if he wasted it. He went into a very tough regiment of train-ing, and fared better, coming out a poor second at the Commonwealth Games held in Rome in 1960. This fired Seraphino’s resolve to win, and win he eventually did. At the 1962 Common-wealth Games held in Perth Australia, the Ga-zelle as Seraphino was affectionately known brought home glory winning the gold in the 100 and 220 yard sprints. He was the first Kenyan to ever win at an International level, and in-stantly became a National Hero. Young Ken-yans were inspired by Seraphino. To them, he was not a Goan, but one of them, which he truly was! The Goan community were also rapt and excited with his win. He made each and every Goan not just in Kenya, but all over the world very proud!!! Seraphino eventually moved over to the UK after Kenya got its independence, and has been there ever since. In the year 2003, he visited Kenya after 36 years to attend the 50th anniversary of the Kenya Ama-teur Athletics Association, where he was felicitated. To the multitude attending the celebrations, Seraphino said: “Mimi mtu wa Mombasa mbwana” [I am from Mombasa]. This was like a home coming for the National Hero. Seraphino Antao ran his ‘last race’ and lost on the 6th of September this year, succumbing to a virulent cancer. He will be remembered as the great sportsman he was, who carried the banner for Kenya and the pride of all Goans world-wide. May his soul rest in peace.
