Just a year ago, we opened the doors of some of our city’s most intriguing buildings for Gold Coast Open House 2015. I’m delighted. It was a great success.

So, here we are back for our second year and what looks likely to be a most enjoyable and popular event for some time to come.

City of Gold Coast offers remarkable diversity in both our natural and built environments. I find it both fascinating and instructive to see how architectural and engineering styles and traditions have changed so much since the early days of settlement here.

Initially, there was a tendency to build grand edifices designed to command respect and capable of withstanding anything nature threw at them. These were primarily public buildings or those belonging to the wealthy class.

Nowadays, contemporary buildings are more sympathetic to local and regional character and influenced by climate, oceans, rivers, parks and heritage bushlands.

I encourage you to sample what is on display this year and enjoy the imagination and craftsmanship that went into each. Tell us how you think the Gold Coast should look at gchaveyoursay.com.au

I do hope you enjoy the event.

Ultra-modern and bold in design yet practical in function, this building acts as a teaching tool where theory comes to life, inspiring innovation and creativity among architecture students.

Design features include floating mezzanine, spiral staircases and internal ‘streets’. The building’s main ‘scoops’ provide space for critiques, group work and exhibitions, all set in an open-plan environment designed to inspire collaboration. All students have their own workspaces and 24-hour access.

The school takes its inspiration from the work of Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, designer of the original campus and arch building which sets Library and Faculty of Society and Design in two wings linked by a two storey arch that houses academic and administration offices.

The latest addition to Bond University is a state-of-the-art sports centre.

SkyPoint is set atop the multiple design award-winning Q1 building, one of the world’s tallest residential towers. An express elevator travels 77 floors in 43 seconds to the Gold Coast’s only beachside observation deck offering 360 degree views from surf to hinterland.

Designers, working through the year of the Sydney Olympics, envisioned something intrinsically Australian and drew inspiration from the curves of the Olympic torch and Opera House.

Five hundred workmen laboured for three years on construction. Twenty-six piles, each 2m in diameter pass through 4m of solid rock to extend 40m into the ground. They support a core, extending from levels 3-85, constructed from curtains of glass and aluminium weighing 1301 tonnes. The oval spire, one of the world’s longest at 97.7m, begins at level 76 and extends 47m above a glass fin. When illuminated by powerful arc lights, it can be seen for 200km.

Japanese investors fell in love with the Gold Coast during the 1980s. The first was the Daikyo Kanko Corporation of Tokyo. Its president Shuji Yokoyama believed the city could become a world-class holiday destination. Daikyo bought a Surfers Paradise site and built the city’s first five-star hotel. The $70 million, 296-room hotel Gold Coast International Hotel opened in 1987.

New Australian owners Amalgamated Holdings Limited (AHL) refurbished the hotel and launched the QT Hotels and Resorts brand in 2011, opening the QT Gold Coast.  Design mastermind Nic Graham wanted to take visitors on a 1950s inspired journey to a cool, clean, beach club-style resort.

Open spaces and decor are edgy, playful and vibrant. Custom furniture, graphica and pops of bold colour are inspired by the 1950s and 60s with Eames-era chairs, artist-crafted feature walls and photographic ceiling mosaics of the Gold Coast through the ages feature throughout.

Owners and builders meet codes that encourage sustainable building practice. Most homes are powered by solar panels and employ techniques to reduce water usage. A Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Centre minimises rubbish taken from the site.

A cafe operates from an adapted former farm house. Residents attend yoga, pilates, quigong, dancing, craft beer tasting and other shared events in a large community centre.

Other features include resort-style lap pool, Bali huts, kitchen, library and playground.

Ecovillage has won 30-plus awards at home and overseas, setting benchmarks for others building better communities of the future.

The Southport Methodist Church bought three allotments on the corner of Short and Scarborough Streets and built a small wooden church in 1926. In 1930, a manse was added to house a married minister.  It was removed in the 1960s.

The foundation stone for a new church, the Southport Methodist War Memorial Church, was laid on 18 July, 1964. Constructed of brick by congregation member Bill Short, the unique futuristic design was selected after an Australia-wide competition. The roof is a hyperbolic paraboloid.

Within the church, the Bill Short memorial stained glass window was designed by Glenn Mack Studio, Daylesford. Panes of coloured glass represent peace and harmony emanating from the Holy Spirit during the creation of heavens, Earth, sea, plants and animals.

The foyer has been remodelled to create an open and welcoming space which reflects the church’s mission statement: Connecting with the heart.

Stella Maris – the name means Star of the Sea – is a multiple design award-winning seaside church much loved by parishioners and visitors whose donations funded its $3.2 million construction.

A study in height and light, the contemporary glass and sandstone house of worship replaced an old wooden church that served its congregation for years. Worshippers enter through an arch of blades encased in sandstone, welcomed by Giovan Battista Salvi’s Il Sassoferrato – an image of the Madonna and Child – printed on glass.

Building materials provide the colour and texture, taking inspiration from nearby beach and ocean. Light enters through coloured glass to play on spaces used to celebrate the rituals of mass, baptism, communion, confirmation, marriage and funeral. Gardens, trees and covered walkways provide a tranquil green oasis for all to enjoy. Stella Maris is a drawcard for locals and visitors who delight in the sacred space of architecture and environmentally sympathetic design.

The total refurbishment of an existing 1960s waterfront residence resulted in the reuse of a delightful home that might otherwise have been demolished.

The existing house had fallen into disrepair and required considerable maintenance. Asbestos was removed.

A new entry was created while kitchen and dining rooms were re-planned and opened up.

Covered and louvered decks were added to take advantage of the spectacular canal views. New landscaping by the pool included the addition of pool fence.

External asbestos cladding was replaced with a painted western red cedar cladding.

During the renovation, existing elements were reused as much as possible with new elements designed to complement the existing home.

Award-winning Patio House takes its inspiration from the modest beach shacks built as holiday homes on the Gold Coast beachfront during the 1950s and 60s.

The main pavilion or living area opens from two sides, allowing outdoors in and indoors out. Life is lived as if on a covered patio that makes the most of canal views.

The master bedroom boasts views of the canal to the west and the study of the street to the east.

Timber joinery and tumbled brick walls strike textural balance.

Plaster ceilings, freed of lighting and service fixtures provide a canvas where dappled light from pool and canal can play.

Finishes include concealed gutters, flared door jambs with routed handle pulls, exposed brass door tracks and variegated timber decking with exposed joints.

Seaside Broadbeach Bowls Club, home to the best greens in Australia and, some say, the world, has unveiled its $3.5 million Commonwealth Games makeover.

All four greens were upgraded to international competition standards in time to play a massive role in the 2015 Australian Open, poached from Melbourne for five years, with 2019 Asia Pacific Championships and the 2020 world titles to follow.

A modern makeover, designed by Hamilton Hayes Henderson Architects, working with Condev Constructions, stripped the 40-year-old building back to roof and floors. Back bar and toilets were removed at the beach end of the building. Food servery relocates to adjoin bars. A new commercial kitchen triples the size of the old food prep area.

Theming, christened Coastal Hamptons, is in greys and white with bold highlights in beach colours like blue and yellow.

Patrons can now sit anywhere in the dining hall to enjoy views of the greens.

A huge outdoor terrace allows patrons to enjoy a drink or meal while they play barefoot bowls.

Ramps, wider footpaths and upgraded allow the club to better cater to disabled patrons and those with young families.

SPEAKER EVENT: FROM MICRO TO MACRO

How does sense of home translate, in our lifestyle city, from the micro dwelling to the home in the sky?

Some of our best and brightest architects and designers will address the question at a special Gold Coast Open House 2016 event at Gold Coast City Art Gallery on Wednesday, 2 November.

These designers of beach shacks, luxury mansions, micro homes and tower apartments will deliver short presentations followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Philip Follent, Australian Institute of Architects Gold Coast Northern Rivers co-chair. An audience Q&A will follow.

“Gold Coast Open House not only gets you behind the scenes of our city’s architecture and spaces, but into the minds of our creative lifestyle shapers,’’ said Mr Follent.

A highlight will be a screening 50 Years in Paradise,

a short film by Alex Chomicz, a photographer and filmmaker whose recent work includes the ABC1 documentary Polymorphous about the enigmatic Australian artist Polly Borland.

Chomicz is an architecture photographer who works in the US, UK and China. Subjects of his portrait work include Cate Blanchett and Nick Cave.

50 Years in Paradise casts the 50-year-old Paradise Tower at Surfers Paradise, as a showgirl struggling with mid-life crisis.

Once considered bold, beautiful and cutting edge, she wonders at her relevance now others stand younger, taller and more striking. In Chomicz’s hands, she is still a thing of beauty who has much to teach those that follow.

Gold Coast Open House Speaker Event: Wednesday, 2 November, Gold Coast City Art Gallery, 6pm, free.

A family called Hughes built their home, Tremaine, at 152 High Street, Southport, in about 1910. Typical of the gracious early 20th-century dwellings constructed as town became coastal resort, it was built in the Queenslander style that was popular from the late 19th century until World War II. Most were timber framed and clad and set on high wooden stumps. A notable feature was the shady verandah that ran along one or more sides of the house.

Tremaine was moved to make way for apartment complex, The Oaks, restored and re-opened as Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame. Honouring champions who reach the highest level in their sport while living locally, it houses an abundant collection of sports memorabilia. Queensland’s only Olympic Room is a shrine to achievement in Olympic sports.

Heritage-listed Southport Town Hall was constructed in the fashionable Art Deco style by architectural partnership Hall and Phillips, designers of other Gold Coast buildings including the Main Beach and Southport Bathing Pavilions (1934). The official opening was by Queensland Premier William Forgan-Smith on 2 August 1935.

Amalgamating with other nearby councils, Southport Town Council was renamed South Coast Town Council in 1949, Gold Coast Town Council in 1958 and Gold Coast City Council in 1959. Rear extensions were made to the building in 1957 and the early 1960s. Gold Coast City Council built new offices at Evandale in 1976, leaving Southport to operate as a branch office. A 1997 conservation project revealed original features including front doors and lettering over the front entrance. A 2011 paint job restored to the building to its 1930s colour scheme.

Southport Drill Hall is a rare remaining example of an intact 19th-century drill hall designed, built and furnished to the standard employed statewide after Queensland separated from NSW. It was built by Coomera’s John Fortune in 1890 to house the Queensland Defence Force’s Moreton Regiment. Two years later, staff, volunteers and militia were absorbed into the Commonwealth and Moreton Regiment became the Royal Queensland Regiment. From World War I to the end of World War II, the hall served as a light anti-aircraft battery. It has been home to community groups including boy scouts. The first such use was by Southport Agricultural and Horticultural Society during Carnival Week, 1910. Vacated in 1988, it stood empty for a couple of years, was donated to Gold Coast City Council, relocated to Owen Park, restored and heritage listed. Today, it is home to Queensland Naval Brigade and operates as a military museum.

The Exchange is a fine example of a disused building repurposed for future use. In 2015, Telstra and local engineering family the Howes partnered to adapt a 60-year-old building into co-share office space.

Home to 26 desks, a meeting room, kitchen, photography studio and four artist studios, the Exchange is located on a site that housed the Gold Coast’s first post and telegraph office built in 1909, followed by two-story brick building to house a state-of-the-art automatic telephone exchange, in 1957.

The old Post Office was demolished in 1967 and a new Post Office and Telephone Exchange erected a year later. Built in the stark Modernist style for $369,828, the facility was run by the Postmaster-General’s Department, part of which later became Telecom, then Telstra.

The Gold Coast’s original ambulance station, built in 1922 near Town Hall and Southport Courthouse, serviced the region for more than 50 years.

Alterations made during the 1950s, 60s and 70s included the removal of some of the street facade and erection of a screen wall.

The two-storey building was about 80 years old when local engineering family the Howes enlisted Burling Brown Architects to restore the exterior and repurpose the interior as co-share office space.

It is home to about 30 businesses with meetings rooms, kitchens, outdoor and balcony entertainment space, parking for 11 cars and coffee shop.

The Southport Masonic Centre is the oldest lodge on the Gold Coast. An original building, constructed in 1906, is still used today for supper meetings after lodge. The current building was constructed in 1959 for a cost of £3000 pounds by MW Bro HB Milliner, Grand Master of United Grand Lodge of Queensland. Five lodges meet at the venue – Southport 62, Stradbroke 349, Broadwater 434, Surfers Paradise 495 and Allied Daylight 533.

Freemasonry is one of the oldest and largest fraternal societies in the world. An estimated 5 million members include 9,000 Queenslanders and 75,000 Australasians. Freemasons come from all walks of life but share a common concern for humanity and a belief in integrity, goodwill and charity.

Modern freemasonry dates back to the Middle Ages when stonemasons built the castles and cathedrals of Europe. Artisans formed lodges to ensure knowledge passed to apprentices, protecting the skills and secrets of their trade.

Southport General Cemetery’s earliest graves pre-date gazettal, indicating it may first have been an unofficial burial ground.

The first recorded burial was for a male soldier and pensioner, Joab, who was killed by lightning in 1878. The second was for William Ironside, who died in March 1880.

The cemetery’s oldest graves can be found in Section Three along pathways near the pavilion. Some are unmarked.

By the end of 1900, 242 burials had been recorded. By 1937, that number had grown to more than 1000.

The longest serving sexton was Thomas Wain. He resigned in 1945, aged 81, after serving at Southport Cemetery for 43 years.

Monument styles, materials, symbolism and inscriptions are characteristic of the styles found in Australia’s other European cemeteries.

St Hilda’s School celebrated its centenary as an Anglican all-girls day and boarding school in 2012. The 14-hectare campus features buildings old and new.

The Diocesan Council bought Miss Davenport’s Goy-te-Lea School for Girls in Bay and Davenport Streets and changed the name to St Hilda’s Church of England Girls’ Grammar School in 1912.

Archbishop Donaldson and former Maryborough Girls’ Grammar headmistress Miss Catherine Bourne opened St Hilda’s with 23 boarders. Two years later, 60 enrolled. Miss Bourne bought an elevated High Street site that was walking distance from the sea. The brick school, erected in 1917, cost £14,000. She gifted both to the church.

Named after a seventh-century Abbess of Whitby who, stories say, turned serpents into stone, St Hilda’s school crest features three ammonites. The school motto Non Nobis Solum means Not for Ourselves Alone.

Robert (Sonny) Tennant Johnston erected Sata Nita as a bridal suite ahead of his 1936 marriage to bride-to-be Lila. It was built in the Spanish Mission style employed on the Gold Coast beachfront in buildings used as swimmers change rooms and surf clubs.

Johnston, half of Johnston and Freeman Lumber Merchants, scoured the region for the best timbers with red cedars from Numinbah and Springbrook used throughout. The living room floor was prepared from a single tree.

Ceiling plasterwork is typical of the period and still in excellent condition. A master plasterer from Italy spent six months on the job. The entrance door features some of the original leadlight glass work.

Sata Nita was the Johnston family home until well into the 1980s when it changed owners and became an antiques store. Somerville Funerals relocated from High Street, Southport, in 1994. Much of the original fit-out and decor remain the same.

The Gold Coast’s only Anglican day and boarding school stands on the banks of Nerang River, a mix of grand heritage buildings and modern structures.

St Alban’s Chapel, built in memory of Old Boys who died serving their country in World War One, opened in 1921. The Clock Tower followed, with a dining hall and accommodation for three boarding houses. It served as an American army hospital during World War Two.

Biddle House, a collection of buildings formerly known as Governor’s House, was built in 1870 by Henry Biggs. It served as summer residence for two Queensland Governors before Horace Henry Dixon optioned it, renovated and set up The Southport School in 1901.

The Music School started life as a cable station sited at Bauer Street, Southport. It housed the Australia-Canada line that provided communication links in both World Wars. In 1981, two of the three buildings moved to TSS.

Visit the newly renovated offices of award-winning architects and designers whose work, from highrise buildings to churches and Southport Central to Runaway Bay Marina, is synonymous with the Gold Coast.

Located behind a new facade designed by Archidiom for The Elkhorn Centre – formerly 29 Elkhorn – these are offices are designed to stimulate rather than confine the team of creatives who work within.

Natural light is abundant. A terrace to the east offers ocean and city views that allow its workers to embrace the elements from within.

Multiple design award-winning Gold Coast University Hospital is built to world-class standards to reduce the number of patients travelling further afield for treatment.

Located near Griffith University and a new private hospital in the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, the hospital ranges over seven buildings.

The main building is home to clinical, clinical support and two inpatient services rising nine levels to roof and helicopter pad.

The seven-storey atrium boosts natural light and draws eyes to landscaped gardens and surrounds.

Art has been incorporated into the design. There is evidence art can play a role in the healing experience for patients, contribute to welcoming atmosphere and make the workplace a positive place for employees.

Finishes, furnishings, joinery and pattern create visual interest that stimulates and welcome.

Already one of the nation’s largest private hospitals with 284 beds and 13 operating theatres, this $230 million hospital will expand again next year.

This latest addition to the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge precinct features warm, welcoming, non-clinical spaces designed to look more like what you’d find in a boutique hotel than a hospital.

A central lift offers vertical access to four floors dedicated to patient care and acts as central hub with spokes leading to each department.

Colour schemes reflect Gold Coast themes of ocean (blues), beach (yellows and oranges) and hinterland (greens and browns).

All bedrooms have a view over parks and landscaped courtyards and make the most of natural light, which assists in healing.

Radio station 102.9 Hot Tomato hit the airwaves on 1 August, 2003. David Cooney Construction won a Master Builders Award for the conversion of former regional TV station into radio station.

Proximity to the Gold Coast’s business, health and law heart was an attraction. So too was the venue’s floor-to-ceiling height - in-ceiling air-conditioning could be installed to keep the broadcast equipment cool.

A pre-existing generator and tower – the station’s link to a Mount Tamborine’s transmitter – is still used today. TV studios were demolished to make way for two on-air studios, news booth, edit area and production studios.

Channel 9 Gold Coast News launched in 1996, making real the dream of TV mogul Kerry Packer to put our beachside city front and centre of its own news half hour.

Reporters and producers moved into offices in the 22-storey 50 Cavill, located in the heart of Surfers Paradise. Locals affectionately called it the Tower of Power, a nod to its then tenant list of power brokers.

The location, just a short walk from iconic Surfers Paradise beach and the nightclub strip, put the team right at the heart of all the action on the glitter strip.

The clincher was a balcony where local weather presenters could report rain, hail, gale or shine backed by Gold Coast sunset or glittering highrise skyscapes by night.

Leila McKinnon, Natalie Gruzlewski and Karl Stefanovic stepped up to big national roles from the local bulletin. The current anchors are Wendy Kingston and Bruce Paige.

The home of ABC Gold Coast was built in 1988, five years after launch in Surfers Paradise.

The station changed from AM to FM and made its home at Mermaid Beach. The resulting 91.7 ABC Gold Coast, then called Coast FM was aimed at the youth market. Several on-air transformations followed before it became the home of local content.

The building is very much a product of its time with the Grand Arch a talking point for visitors. So too is the use of gold throughout.

Former staffers have included 7.30 Report host Leigh Sales and former receptionist turned Kylie Minogue PA Leeanne Woolrich. Pamela Stephenson-Connolly, Jeffrey Archer and Sigrid Thornton have dropped in for interviews.

ABC staffers were surprised to arrive at work one day to find the station being painted pink. It was an accident – the wrong paint had been mixed and dispatched.

The building, barely changed since it was built, is due a facelift. This may be the last chance to see it as is.

Buildings and places capture the aspirations and evolution of our cities. The Open House program offers an opportunity for everyone to unlock and experience the surprising diversity of architecture and urban spaces on the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast Open House returns for its second year following the success of last year’s inaugural event when we became the 33rd city to participate in a worldwide program alongside global cities like New York, Rome, Dublin, Barcelona, Chicago and Helsinki. Closer to home, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth are members of the Open House family.

Open House London was founded in 1992 by Victoria Thornton, with the aim of fostering a better understanding of the value of architecture and the built environment outside the profession. Frustrated by the barriers between the architecture profession and the general public, Victoria set out to make London’s buildings accessible to all, in line with her belief that direct experience is the most effective way to learn about, understand and argue for quality in the built environment.

Well-designed buildings and public spaces are vital in creating and sustaining a vibrant city and Open House London helped the wider community become more knowledgeable, engage in dialogue and make informed judgements about architecture.

This spirit has inspired the alliance between the Australian Institute of Architects, the City of Gold Coast and the National Trust to establish Gold Coast Open House as part of this global movement.

Although the Open House program is a celebration and acknowledgement of exemplary architecture across the lifespan of the city, it also illustrates the role of the

profession and how what we do as architects enriches the communities we live and work within. The Open House program is a vehicle to broaden the understanding of our cities to the wider community. With understanding comes an appreciation of the buildings and places that define our cities and influence the way we live.

The Open House program is a key element of our advocacy as a profession to advance how the community understands the purpose and potential of architecture and how to value it.

We look forward to your involvement.
