You are never too old to love or play tennis. 93 year old, Dr. Charles Roe is a true example of that and an inspiration to us all, having spent over 85 years playing the sport. He would have to be one of the oldest tennis players, not just on the Gold Coast but also in Australia.

It all began in 1927. Charles’ grandparents had a tennis court at home, which was the norm at that time. His parents were top players in Queensland and every Sunday afternoon there would be a social game of tennis amongst the family.

‘I would hang around with a racquet in my hand and wait for my grandmother who didn’t play, to serve tea at 4pm at the big table, and

said Charles.

He went on to play at school and after, at university, when he was studying his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, until the war, when all sport stopped.

went on to be one of the leading Urologists in Queensland at the Mater Hospital. He was an Undergraduate’ Professor at the University of Queensland and Bond University in Health services and Medicine. In 2011, Charles received the honor of becoming a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his service to medicine, particularly through his contributions to the Australian Medical Association Queensland and to the community.

Throughout his professional career, tennis has always been part of his exercise regime. Charles has enjoyed playing socially as well as participating in a number of Veterans Tournaments since retirement.

‘Two of my proudest tennis achievements was winning the Men’s 80+ Veterans Singles Championship of

Australia in 1999 and the 80+ Veterans Doubles World Championship with John Benn from the USA in 2001,’

said Charles.

‘Through the veteran tournaments, I have played a lot of team matches and have been to Spain, Sweden, Japan, Austria, South Africa and England. They have been wonderful’. He added.

‘I’ve been to a few of the Australian Opens and Wimbledon, and I had the pleasure of spending time with the Draper family some years back, when playing one of the Cups in England and have seen them all play and played with them all,’ said Charles. When asked who in his lifetime, would he consider to be the best male tennis player, Charles replied, ‘Federer, not only because of his tennis but because of his behavior, the support of his parents, simple service action and none of this bouncing the ball 17 times before serving’.

Charles has retired to South Stradbroke Island and enjoys playing tennis every Friday morning at the Gold Coast Seniors Club. ‘It is a one and a half hour journey on my boat from South Stradbroke Island to Runaway Bay, where I pick up my car to drive down to Miami,’ says Charles.

Charles advice for longevity is living a healthy life and looking after yourself. He says, ‘Exercise, exercise, exercise for an hour every day, run, skip, hop, jump, serve, play tennis, 6 days a week, do cryptic crosswords, play bridge and chess to exercise your brain, and eat simple fresh food and stay off the sugars and processed food’.

Rising star of Australian tennis, Gold Coaster Ben Mitchell has been awarded an AIS Pro Tour Program tennis scholarship for 2012. The AIS Pro Tour Program is a full-time on-the-road touring program promoting excellence in tennis and designed as the pinnacle of athlete development within the Tennis Australia pathway.

“The AIS Pro Tour program aims to help our young athletes’ transition from juniors to the professional level,” said Brent Larkham, AIS Men’s Head Coach. The program offers athletes a range of support including superior coaching, comprehensive sports science and medical support to ensure they have the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Jarmila at Queens Park Jarmila at Queens Park Queens Park Tennis Centre at Southport was the training base over the summer season for Jarmila Gajdosova, Australia’s no 2-ranked female player and no.33 WTA.

Many of the juniors who were participating in the summer camp program had the opportunity to chat and have photos with Jarmila. She took time out of her intensive training regime to be photographed with about 50 children and sign autographs.

Recently in Switzerland with the Australian Fed Cup team, Jarmila frequently visits the Gold Coast. Whenever she is in town, she trains on the Queens Park courts.

Head Coach of Tennis Plus at Queens Park, John Birrell says,

‘It creates a real buzz at our centre when we have high ranked players hitting on the courts at Queens Park. Players like Jarmila

inspire our juniors and they look up to her. They see first hand how hard these players train and how hard they actually hit the ball.’

Lachlan Chesterman says, ‘It was really cool seeing Jarmila up close, she is really nice and was happy to talk to us’.

John Birrell says ‘You never know who you’ll see on court at Queens Park’.

A new era has begun for Tennis Blue International Training Academy at the Hope Island Tennis Club, Hope Island. Glenn Hamilton, one of the most experienced coaches on the Gold Coast, has launched a new and innovative tennis program.

Drawing on his extensive French coaching history, Glenn has instituted junior programs based on the French mini-tennis model, a model that leads the world in junior tennis development.

Tennis Blue boasts one of the most well rounded coaching teams on the GC including Glenn Hamilton; Tennis Australia and Internationally recognised coach (including 2010 lecturer at Australian Grand Slam conferences), Ben Clark; Elite French player and coach, Lachlan Treacher; NZ sports conditioning coach, player and former sparring partner for Bernard Tomic.

Childcare Centres are one of the first places that children have the opportunity to experience tennis.

Many childcare providers on the Gold Coast now offer kindy tennis for children aged from 3 years. Julie Dybendahl from Jumpstart Tennis offers a professional kindy program that helps develop hand eye co-ordination and gross motor skills, which prepares children to progress into the Tennis Australia MLC Hot shots development program.

Bella Curran, aged 5 plays Red Ball with Jumpstart Tennis at the Gold Coast Seniors Tennis Club. Bella started kindy tennis at La Petite Childcare centre with Jumpstart Tennis. Julie says, ‘Bella’s hand and eye coordination has developed, and has continued to improve in many other sports and activities. Bella likes to be involved in activities where she improves and is highly stimulated’.

Bella chose to continue on from the Junior Program that she was doing at La Petite as an outside

activity at Gold Coast Seniors Tennis Club because she enjoys learning tennis skills and having fun at the same time.

‘Kids that start and enjoy kindy tennis generally tend to follow on to the tennis programs offered at their local tennis club or centre. It is a great introduction to the sport’ says Julie.
