A performance commissioned by

Power, passion and the Paralympic Games

Page 2: Gold Run Programme

Welcome to this performance of Gold Run – a performance featuring song, music, film and sculpture that tells the story of a group of athletes preparing for a major sporting event.Training for sport is hard work, and our athletes think that maybe it would be easier to cheat. Their coach is encouraging them to persevere, but he has a secret that will shock them all.

Gold Run is inspired by the story of the return of learning disabled athletes to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, London 2012, after they were banned following a cheating scandal in 2000.

Gold Run celebrates effort, overcoming challenges and personal triumph.

the making of Gold RunGold Run is a project created by the performers and filmmakers, supported by a partnership between three arts organisations: Carousel, Glyndebourne and Pallant House Gallery.

Carousel is an award-winning learning disability led arts organisation, working internationally, and 2012 is our 30th anniversary. Gold Run celebrates our achievements in promoting the active involvement of people with a learning disability in the arts, in teaching new skills and developing talent. We are delighted to have created a new choir, with Glyndebourne, which is a first for Carousel.

It has also been a great opportunity for our Oska Bright filmmakers to work with many young people making four new films and VJing live in the performance. Oska Bright is the world’s leading festival for filmmakers with a learning disability.

The Glyndebourne Festival was founded in 1934 by John Christie and his opera singer wife, Audrey Mildmay. Today the Festival runs from May to August with a programme of six operas and an annual tour throughout the UK from October to December. Glyndebourne has also pioneered using recordings to open-up its work to a worldwide audience through broadcasts, cinema screenings, DVDs and internet streaming.

As part of its mission to reach new audiences, Glyndebourne has maintained a widely respected education programme since 1986. The education department delivers a year-round programme including activity for young people and community groups, talks and events and new work. Gold Run is a very exciting project that continues the tradition of commissions for the main stage and we hope that the performers and audience, especially those visiting Glyndebourne for the first time, have a wonderful experience.

Pallant House Gallery is a unique architectural combination of a Grade One-Listed Queen-Anne townhouse and an award-winning contemporary extension, holding one of the best Collections of Modern British Art in the country. The Gallery offers a comprehensive programme of activities and is widely recognised for its internationally-important temporary exhibition programme and pioneering Learning and Community Programme.

Outside In has changed the landscape of the art world. It was set up by Pallant House Gallery in 2006 to showcase and give opportunity to artists who would otherwise be excluded from the art world for a variety of reasons, including health, disability or social circumstance. There are no set creative criteria and no boundary in art process or limit on subject for the artists that choose to align themselves with the project. Outside In was excited to be asked to be partner on Gold Run. We see the project as offering the two artists we have appointed a platform for showcasing their skills and expertise to a wider audience and supporting their professional development.

the caRousel sinGeRsThe Carousel Singers is the choir at the heart of Gold Run. It is made up of 30 young people, mainly between the ages of 16 and 25, who all have a learning disability.

The Carousel Singers started singing together after meeting through taster sessions back in January 2011 and have been rehearsing together every week since March 2011.

During rehearsals, the choir and the artistic team worked together to make up words for the big emotional moments in the story. We then sat round the piano and found ways to sing the words. For each song, we thought about what emotion or message we wanted the audience to have. So the style of each song is different – we have reggae numbers, lots of power ballads, rock and much more.

James Redwood, our Choir Leader and Conductor, took the songs away and orchestrated them so that the band could play the music for the production.

Learning disabled opera singer David Rushbrook, our lead singer who plays the Coach, went through the same process in creating his material and has visited the choir to share his songs. The music is exciting, uplifting, emotional, expressive, thought-provoking and foot-tapping.

What I have enjoyed most about being on the Gold Run team is learning new skills and meeting lots of new people. I feel very excited that I am a small part of the Olympics. Gold Run is giving me the opportunity to sing at Glyndebourne and show off the talents people with a learning disability have.

Hi, my name is Matthew Hellett and I’ve been working with Sarah as a film director for the Gold Run films. I’m an award-winning filmmaker and I’ve had my films seen all over the world. Two highlights of working on Gold Run have been working with other people to make films (I usually make them on my own) and sharing all of the amazing creativity of the young people.

Hello, my name is Sarah Watson and I’ve been working as a film director for Gold Run. I also help run the Oska Bright Film Festival. It’s been great working on Gold Run – I really enjoyed working with the athletes last summer to make films for the VJing. I liked working with some of the school children to make the films as they’ve given me lots of ideas and been very creative.

Whilst the choir was creating its music, Oska Bright filmmakers Matthew Hellett and Sarah Watson were creating short films that are screened as part of the performance. Some of the films were made as part of a project with schools in Chichester and Brighton.

At the same time, sculptor James Lake was creating the sculptural head you can see on stage. The head is modelled on the singer playing the Coach, David Rushbrook. Andy Hood has documented this project through his photography.

My name is Andy Hood and I was one of the 2007 Outside In award winners. I was commissioned to document the Gold Run project by Pallant House Gallery. This is my first experience as a documentary photographer; my usual practice involves self-portraiture and experimenting with multiple exposures. I have focused on following the choir’s journey from rehearsals to performance on the Glyndebourne stage. I have also spent time with James Lake in his studio whilst he was working on his sculpture.

Throughout the process, representatives from the partnership organisations and the creative team met up to share ideas and to talk about their work, to make sure that everything could feed in to the performance.

The next step is for James Lake to look at all the material the Gold Run performers have created and devise an installation that will tour throughout the UK in 2013 as part of the Outside In project run by Pallant House Gallery.

James laKe Sculptor

I’m the artist responsible for creating the large scale cardboard head which is based on the opera singer David Rushbrook.

I was brought into the project by Outside In and Pallant House Gallery to collaborate on Gold Run with a group of artists with a diverse range of experiences and skills.

The sculpture was constructed entirely from recycled cardboard and glue. The detailing was created by carving away cardboard, then cutting and attaching increasingly smaller layers of cardboard until a life-like quality was achieved.

When looking at my work you might ask yourself “why use cardboard?” and the reason I do so is because it is an inexpensive material, readily available and capable of creating sculptures of a scale and stature comparable to any other traditional art material. There is a surprise in seeing a large sculpture made of cardboard and I enjoy using what is a utilitarian material and making my art accessible to all.

maRK RichaRdsonCoordinating Director

Hi, my name is Mark Richardson and I’m the Coordinating Director for Gold Run. I’ve directed and produced many shows over the years but I’m really inspired by the story behind Gold Run. It’s great to be a part of a team that brings the story to life. I’m very impressed by the work that everyone has done on this show.

James RedWoodChoir Leader & Conductor

I have been working with the Carousel Singers since we started, over a year ago. I make up music for a living, often with big groups, and my job on Gold Run has been to support the choir to make up the story, poetry and music that you’ll hear today. When we’d finished the songs, I took them away and wrote them down so that our amazing band of musicians could join in the performance. Since then we’ve all been working really hard to get our singing as clear and strong as possible. We hope you enjoy the show!

Rich GaRfield Lighting Designer

Hi, I’m Rich and I’m the Lighting Designer for Gold Run. I’ve really enjoyed working on the project because it has been a great experience collaborating with such a creative company which is so open to ideas. Lighting the show has been a pleasure as the core elements of the show, the music, video, costume and sculpture, are all so strong and vibrant. There is a lot to take inspiration from and I’m delighted to be part of it.

Julia RobeRtsMovement Director

Hello, I am Julia and I have been working with the Carousel Singers to help them prepare for their performances of the Gold Run show. It has been a great journey; their individual voices have come together to make one big voice, but keeping everyone’s own quality of sound and energy. Gold Run has been one of the most inspiring projects I have ever been part of and I am looking forward to seeing where the Carousel Singers go from here!

fReya Wynn JonesMovement Director

Hello, my name is Freya and I am a singer and director working on Gold Run. I have been working with James, Julia and the Carousel Singers to create all the music for our performances by exploring different things to do with the Paralympics and writing songs to reflect our opinions of what it would be like to compete. I also helped to stage the performance by looking at how the songs made us feel as a group and how we wanted to tell our story.

holly muRRay Costume Designer

Hello, my name is Holly and I’m the costume designer. Gold Run has been a great project because everyone has been able to contribute to the show. We had a workshop about costume and fabrics so that the choir could think about the different colours and textures they like. They were able to help design their costumes to wear on stage. This gave me loads of ideas to work with and we had a lot of fun trying things on in the costume fittings.
