You are about to take part in a tradition at Southwest Minnesota StateUniversity. Mustang “Gold Rush” Days symbolizes the start of youracademic and social quest for success. A “Gold Rush” by definition is:
1: a rush to newly discovered goldfields in pursuit of riches2: the headlong pursuit of sudden wealth in a new or lucrative field3: to lavish attention on4: to secure a pledge of membership5: a thronging of people usually to a new place in search of wealth
Our four-day orientation program will provide sessions to acclimateyou to our student services and the guest speakers will give you adviceabout how to be successful in a college environment. The variousactivities during the days and nights will give you the opportunity tosmile, laugh, and have fun with your fellow classmates. This is thebeginning of a new chapter in your life, and we want to start it off witha BANG!

FINANCIAL AID INFORMATIONCheck the status of your financial aid via e-services at www.SMSU.edu. Ifyour award has not been finalized, your loan is not certified, or you havequestions, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 1-800-642-0684 or 507-537-6281. The Financial Aid Office is open Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m.to 4:00 p.m.
EMPLOYMENT INFORMATIONVERIFICATION: If you plan to work on campus while attendingSouthwest Minnesota State University, regulations require you to presentyour original social security card and a photo ID to your employer to verifyyour eligibility to work in the United States. Please be sure to bring thesedocuments with you when you come to SMSU so your payments are notdelayed.
DIRECT DEPOSIT: All students working on campus will receive paymentby direct deposit into their bank account (checking or savings). Enroll indirect deposit online through your e-services account.

When does my Fall Semester bill have to be paid?A: Students must have met the minimum payment criteria by August 4, 2014. Minimumpayment criteria can be viewed at www.SMSU.edu/PaymentPolicy . All fall semesteraccounts are due in full on September 30, 2014.
If I have been awarded work-study, how do I go about finding a job on campus?A: Campus job openings will be posted on our SMSU website, then search studentemployment. It is up to you to contact the departments or areas in which you areinterested and ask if they have any jobs available.
How do I get paid for the work-study hours I work?A: All student workers are paid via direct deposit. You will receive a direct deposit everytwo weeks for the number of hours worked. Most students work an average of 8-10 hoursper week and get paid $8.00 per hour.
As a student, when can I pick up my Stafford Loan Check/excess Financial Aid?A: All financial aid funds will be applied first to the charges on your account. Any fundsremaining will be directly deposited into your bank account (savings or checking) onSeptember 5, 2014. If your refund is printed by check, it will be mailed from SMSU onSeptember 5, 2014. Students are encouraged to fill out the direct deposit form onlinethrough e-services.
When should I buy my books?A: The Campus Store will be open during Gold Rush Days for new students to purchasetheir books. Students may rent or purchase new or used books from the bookstore, anddigital books may be available.
Can I change my meal plan if it is not right for me?A: YES. Meal plan changes for Fall Semester may be made through Monday, September 8,2014. Meal plan changes for Spring Semester can be made the last two weeks of Fallsemester through the first two weeks of spring classes. These requests need to besubmitted in writing to the Dining Services Office across from the Residential Restauranton the first floor of the Student Center.
When do meal plans start?A: Meal plans begin Thursday, August 21, for the evening meal. Meals from your diningplan can be used in the Residential Restaurant located in the Student Center. The mealplan week starts on Saturday and runs through Friday. Your meal plan will start over eachweek. Your meals do not carry over from week to week.
How do I use my Mustang Money?A: Mustang Money can be used just like CASH to purchase anything at the Barnes &Noble Campus Store, The Mustang Zone, all campus food venues including the FoodCourt, Coffee House and Mustang Express convenience stores, even snack vendingmachines. Mustang Money also gets your laundry done in the Res Halls, increases yourprint quota at the TRC and can be used at the Cashier’s Window. Mustang Money is theeasy way to make purchases on campus without carrying cash. For more information or toadd more Mustang Money visit www.smsu.edu/mustangcard.
Are there things to do on campus after Gold Rush Days?A: Yes! Gold Rush Days are just the beginning! Different groups will offer programingthroughout the year ranging from concerts to game nights to service projects. Your RA willalso host programs in your Residence Hall, and you’re invited to attend other hall’sprograms as well. Check our new Guidebook App for current schedules of events oncampus and don’t be afraid to try something new!
