Our Devils Don’t Wear PradaThe plight of the Tasmanian devil has struck a chord with children and it’s their efforts that have inspired Feed a Devil day. The inaugural Feed a Devil Day will be held on Friday 7 September 2012.Devil Ark Operations Manager, Tim Faulkner, explains “We’ve been absolutely amazed by many children’s commitment to conservation and especially saving the Tasmanian devil. Kids have done all sorts of ingenious things to raise money, like jelly bean guessing competitions, cake stalls themed with Tasmanian devil shaped goodies and even a lemonade stand. It’s really a credit to them and we’re delighted that several schools have already taken an interest in Feed a Devil day.”

Feed a Devil day is a fun way for schools to help to save the Tasmanian devil and learn more about our iconic Aussie animal. It costs $2 a day to feed a Tassie devil at Devil Ark and there are currently 120 hungry mouths to feed. Schools supporting Feed a Devil day are asked to dress in the colours of a Tassie devil – black, white and red – and will receive a fundraising pack including posters, stickers and class room activities about Tasmanian devils and our environment.

7 September is Threatened Species Day too, so it’s a timely reminder that with less than 10% of the wild population remaining, the race is on to save the Tasmanian devil. Fundraising packs can be requested online at www.devilark.com.au/feedadevilday, by emailing [email protected] or by calling Devil Ark on 1300 553 565.

Devil Ark is the largest conservation breeding program for the Tasmanian devil in mainland Australia. It was established in January 2011 to breed a large and genetically diverse captive insurance population of devils, away from the disease front in Tasmania. 94 adults and 32 joeys are at Devil Ark. The first breeding season in 2011 saw 26 joeys born.

Everything Old is New AgainCampbell’s Department stores dominated retailing in the Upper Hunter during the early and mid 1900’s with stores in Scone, Muswellbrook, Denman and Merriwa. The grand old Campbell’s buildings at Scone and Muswellbrook were sold in the 1970’s and leased to the Hunter based Richard Owens family’s Shoey’s Food Barns, opening Scone in December 1979 and Muswellbrook in January 1980. Coles, trading as Bi Lo, eventually bought the Shoey’s Food Barns in 1988.

To-day the Owens family, who are still Hunter based, have returned to the same locations with their Ice Box Liquor outlets, having purchased these from Jonathon Clift in November 2008.

Ice Box at Muswellbrook is at the rear of the original Campbell’s/ Shoey’s store, and the Ice Box Drive-In at Scone is at the rear of the old Campbell’s store where the original Shoey’s Food Barn was located.

Now with 19 stores, and expanding, the local Hunter family chain of liquor stores competes with the national publicly listed chains using it’s own buying power which is enhanced through the Liquor Stax group.

Chairman of the Ice Box liquor group, Richard Owens says ‘It is a real quirk of fate that our new Ice Box liquor concept has returned to the same locations in Scone and Muswellbrook where we established our Shoey’s Food Barns over 30 years ago. Funnily enough our head office in Newcastle is in exactly the same building as when we were Shoey’s.’

Staff from the Scone store: Aileen Ferry, Catherine White and Robyn Brugnatti (Manager)

8 - The Upper Hunter Entertainer - August 11 to August 17, 2012

Now in its eighth year, the camp has established itself as an important event on the musical calendar in the Upper Hunter, offering musicians an opportunity to develop their skills with a special guest conductor, professional orchestral musicians and tutors, and experience the joys and challenges of playing with other musicians in a large ensemble.

The camp has grown in popularity and now attracts participants from Sydney, Mudgee and Tamworth in addition to the Hunter region, so local musicians are encouraged to apply now to secure their place, with applications closing Friday 24 August.

This year’s guest conductor for the camp is Mr Christopher Bearman; a dynamic conductor who is devoted to sharing his 40 years of knowledge and experience as a professional violinist and musical director with students of all ages. Chris played with many leading ensembles and orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London for 20 years

and spent another 20 dedicated to teaching music. He was most recently the Director of the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music. The UHCM is very pleased to have Chris involved in the camp this year for the benefit of all participants and tutors.

The orchestral section of the camp cater for players of all orchestral instruments with a minimum playing standard of 3rd grade AMEB or equivalent. The camp is open to players of all ages, and will also again include a Junior Strings section, allowing for students of all ages with a playing standard of Preliminary to Second Grade AMEB or equivalent to also participate and develop their orchestral skills.

The Junior Strings will be directed by prominent Newcastle violinist and teacher, Mrs Peta Dries. Peta teaches violin at the Newcastle University Conservatorium of Music, in addition to maintaining a career as a solo recitalist. Peta is also a founding member of the Christ Church Camerata.

Other tutors at the camp include current and former teachers of the UHCM, including Trevor Mee, Tanya Mee, Jennifer Kershaw, David Cooper, Alison Murphy, Steven Lavis, Janelle French, Robert Thompson and Adam Manning.

Fees for the camp are $65 per player, with a discount of $5 for additional family members, which includes two full days of rehearsals and sectional tutorials, morning and afternoon tea and lunch both days, and participation in a concert at the camp’s conclusion. Registrations are now open and close on Friday 24 August.

For all enquiries and registrations please contact the Camp Director, Jennifer Kershaw at the UHCM on 6541 4888 or email [email protected]

Tocal Steer ChallengeLocal high school students are gaining hands on experience in the cattle and agriculture industry by looking after a steer thanks to a partnership between Tocal College and Coal & Allied.Eight high schools in the Hunter Valley each received a steer from Tocal College in May.

Students are now in the final stage of preparing their steers to compete at the Tocal

Steer Challenge show day later this month.

At the show day, students will be judged on how well they set up the cattle yard, their knowledge of the health and nutrition of their steer and how well they lead the steer.

The challenge took place for the first time last year with Cessnock High School coming out on top.

Cessnock High School Year 10 student Ashley Hunter said that the challenge opened her eyes to how much work goes into cattle production and the agriculture industry.

“Last year’s Tocal Steer Challenge taught me a great deal about farming and working animals and was such a great learning experience that I signed up to do it again this year,” Ashley said.

“The challenge is a lot of fun and I have learned about responsibility and improved my ability to work in a team with other students.”

Cessnock High School Agricultural Teacher Rebecca Northey said the school’s team this year is made up of more than 20 students from years eight to 11 who are looking forward to defending their title.

“The challenge is a great learning experience for students as it not only relates directly to the curriculum but teaches students about the outcomes for agriculture, the husbandry of cattle, providing care, ethics, training and parading or showing cattle,” Ms Northey said.

“It was a very fulfilling experience for the school to win the challenge last year and was a great reward for all the hard work and many hours put into the preparation.

“The Steer Challenge is also improving the self-confidence of our students and gives them something to look forward to as they enjoy working with, training and showing the steers.”

Coal & Allied Principal Community Investment Stephen Sneddon said the Coal & Allied Community Development Fund was proud to partner with Tocal College for the first time to help create strong and diverse communities in the Hunter Valley.

“The Tocal Steer Challenge is a highly practical, fun, and engaging learning opportunity for students interested in agriculture, farming, and raising livestock,” Mr Sneddon said.

“It also helps promote beef production as a viable and important industry in the region as well as provide engaging training and education opportunity for young people to consider agriculture as a possible career.
