Appendix 1 Chinese-European marriages in New South Wales to 1888 Appendix 1 provides a sample of 397 marriage registrations between Chinese men and white or European women in the colony of NSW between 1823 and 1888. The sample is taken from a larger database which was compiled during the course of research for this thesis. As well as couples legally married in NSW, the larger database includes couples who were resident in the colony but were either not married or had married outside of NSW. Appendix 1 gives basic details about the marriages of Chinese men and white women taken from the indexes of marriages compiled by the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. These indexes provide the following details about each marriage registered in the colony: surname and given name of husband and wife, the location and year in which the marriage was registered and the registration number. Unlike marriage indexes for some other Australian colonies, the NSW indexes do not give the birthplace of the husband and wife, so these details have not been included. In 2005, the NSW marriage indexes are available in three forms—the NSW Pioneers Index 1788—1918; as an alphabetical listing by name on microfiche and as a searchable database on CD-ROM; and an online searchable database available at URL: www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyhistory/searchhistoricalrecords. The marriages listed in Appendix 1 were located by searching for marriages of men with Chinese names in the alphabetical listing on microfiche. They have been cross-checked against listings in one or both of the databases. As the indexes are transcribed from original handwritten records, the spelling of names is sometimes problematic due to the difficulties of reading the handwriting of the original registers. Accordingly, the names that appear in Appendix 1 are those as given in the indexes and may differ from how the names appear in other records. Variations of names given in the indexes have been noted. 303

Chinese-European marriages in New South Wales to 1888

Appendix 1 provides a sample of 397 marriage registrations between Chinese men

and white or European women in the colony of NSW between 1823 and 1888. The

sample is taken from a larger database which was compiled during the course of

research for this thesis. As well as couples legally married in NSW, the larger

database includes couples who were resident in the colony but were either not

married or had married outside of NSW.

Appendix 1 gives basic details about the marriages of Chinese men and white women

taken from the indexes of marriages compiled by the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths

and Marriages. These indexes provide the following details about each marriage

registered in the colony: surname and given name of husband and wife, the location

and year in which the marriage was registered and the registration number. Unlike

marriage indexes for some other Australian colonies, the NSW indexes do not give the

birthplace of the husband and wife, so these details have not been included.

In 2005, the NSW marriage indexes are available in three forms—the NSW Pioneers

Index 1788—1918; as an alphabetical listing by name on microfiche and as a searchable

database on CD-ROM; and an online searchable database available at URL:

www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyhistory/searchhistoricalrecords. The marriages listed

in Appendix 1 were located by searching for marriages of men with Chinese names in

the alphabetical listing on microfiche. They have been cross-checked against listings in

one or both of the databases. As the indexes are transcribed from original handwritten

records, the spelling of names is sometimes problematic due to the difficulties of

reading the handwriting of the original registers. Accordingly, the names that appear

in Appendix 1 are those as given in the indexes and may differ from how the names

appear in other records. Variations of names given in the indexes have been noted.

The sample of marriages in Appendix 1 is not a definitive list of marriages of Chinese

men and white women in NSW before 1888, as it was not possible to ascertain the

ethnicity or birthplace of brides and grooms other than from their names. In some

instances, other sources could be used to confirm the groom’s ethnicity as Chinese

and the bride’s as British or European, however in most cases such material could not

be found.

This reliance on names is problematic. Some ‘Chinese’ surnames are also English

surnames (e.g. Lee, Chin), so where a given name or other source could not

corroborate that men with such surnames were Chinese, they have been excluded

from the sample. Other Chinese men used English given and surnames (e.g. Thomas

Haines, John Peters) and while further research uncovered the presence of some of

these men, others may have been unable to be identified as Chinese from the indexes

alone. It is assumed that the women listed in the sample are of British or European

descent, based on their names. Some, however, may be part-Chinese or of Aboriginal

or other descent.

Anglo-Chinese Australians who travelled to China from NSW, c. 1880—1930

Appendix 2 lists Anglo-Chinese Australians who travelled to China from Sydney

during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It gives their name

(including maiden names and other variations), date of birth, date of travel to and

from China, their age on departure, length of stay overseas, brief information about

the trip and reference numbers for the source files. The trips taken were generally to

Hong Kong, with some travellers journeying from there into mainland China. Travel

details are taken primarily from Customs and Immigration files created after 1901 and

held by the National Archives of Australia in Sydney and Canberra. The relevant

record series are listed in the table below.

Agency creating Series number Series title

SP11/6 Certificates of Exemption from Dictation Test (Forms 32 and 21)

SP11/26 Applications for Certificates of Domicile SP11/28 General correspondence files, 'B' series SP42/1 Correspondence of the Collector of Customs

relating to immigration restriction and passports SP42/2 Correspondence (miscellaneous) of the Collector

of Customs relating to immigration restriction and passports

The amount of information given in these files is not consistent, meaning that the files

of some travellers are very large, while for others only minimal records remain. Gaps

in detail in the original files are noted in Appendix 2 by either ‘Not given’ or a

question mark (?), which generally follows information thought to be correct but

unconfirmed. For some travellers, Appendix 2 lists multiple trips to China. Other

travellers may have made trips to China other than those listed, particularly before

detailed records were kept with the introduction of the Commonwealth Immigration

Restriction Act in 1901. Where details of such trips do not appear in the files

examined, they have not been included. A summary of the types of information

provided in Appendix 2 is given in the table below.

Name Lists given names and surname, including alternative surnames by which they were known or under which they travelled (e.g. aka Gum). For women, surnames are generally their name at birth, with married name following in brackets (e.g. later Mrs Lee). If they travelled under their married name, however, their birth name is given in brackets (e.g. née Moore).

Year of birth Generally taken from the files, but in some instances taken from their birth registration or birth certificate

To China Year in which they travelled to China From China Year in which they returned from China Age on departure Taken from the file or calculated from year of birth and date

of departure Length of stay An estimation based on dates found in the files and is

rounded to the nearest year. The round trip journey from Sydney to Hong Kong and back took several months, and stays of less than one year have been given as one year.

Details of travel Brief information about who they travelled with or under what circumstances
