Welcome to the Golden Music Festival at Clear Creek History Park! This weekend’s event is a benefit for Golden History Museums. All proceeds earned support GHM’s education programs and collections conservation.

Clear Creek History Park is one of three historic properties operated by Golden History Museums, a division of the City of Golden Parks and Recreation Department. If you look north across Clear Creek you will see the Golden History Center, home to changing exhibits, public programs and our artifact collection. To the south at the corner of Arapahoe and 12th Streets sits the Astor House Museum, an 1867 boarding house that is listed on the National Register. These special places are open year round and offer an array of fun, family programming. In fact, if you stop by this park next week, you’d see dozens of kids participating in Hands-on His-tory—our highly popular summer camp for kids ages 6-11. This year we implemented some big changes to this event. First, we grew the festival from one day to three days, we added a sustainable lifestyle component (thanks in part to our partners at the City of Golden Sustain-ability Department), and we changed the name of the event from Summer Solstice to Golden Music Festival to better reflect the beautiful, dynamic community we love to call home.

Golden History Museums offers visitors fun, participatory experi-ences about the exciting history of this dynamic town.

The Astor House, a former hotel and boarding house, offers a glimpse of life at the frenetic turn of the 20th century when Golden was a bustling supply town and trade center. Establishments like the As-tor House were an important fixture in Golden where transients and passers-through outnumbered residents nearly four to one.

Clear Creek History Park recreates 1880s life on a ranch in nearby Golden Gate Canyon. Visitors can immerse themselves in pioneer life by helping tend our garden, lending a hand with chores, participating in a school lesson, and caring for our farm animals.

The Golden History Center features a variety of changing exhibits about Golden’s past. It also boasts one of the finest collections of Coors Porcelain in the country, fun Jolly Rancher memorabilia, and a wealth of artifacts that tell the story of our city from its founding to present day.

The Mile Markers

Deeply rooted in old time, folk and traditional American music, The Mile Markers are a modern American roots band based in Den-ver, Colorado. The power of The Mile Markers rests squarely on the riveting vocal interplay and lyrical craftsmanship of the group’s founding members Julie Stratton (guitar/vocals) and Bevin Foley (fiddle/vocals). The group is further rounded out and supported by the rollicking and clever stylings of banjo player Sal Clark and bass-ist Nicki handy. From Moab, Utah to Chicago, Illinois to the Pacific Northwest, The Mile Markers continue to build an ever-growing base of fans and friends anywhere their musical travels take them. Lee Patterson of the Buffalo Grass Acoustic Society put it well when he said, “This well-balanced and powerful duo has a stylistic matu-rity and sophistication well beyond their ages. The duet’s vocals are expressive, nuanced and so in sync that it seemed I was hearing one mind, singing through two voices. Acoustic beauty like theirs is a rare find.”

Trout Steak Revival

Trout Steak Revival, a bluegrass quintet, has been touted as one of Denver’s unsigned rising talents in the roots music scene. Their progressive sound – a blend of mountain music and original com-positions – will soothe your spirit as much as it delights your ears. Formed in 2008, after a series of informal jam sessions along the banks of the South Platte River, Trout Steak Revival released its self-titled debut album in October of 2010. From there, they built a steady fan base playing in local bars, hometowns, and even the Tel-luride Bluegrass Festival band competition in June 2011.

Perhaps the most enjoyable element of these soulful story-tellers is their gift for lyricism and a heart for playful experimentation. Every live show guarantees a good time for the musicians and the audi-ence alike, because it’s clear that these modern-day troubadours are just happy to be strumming their hearts out for our very own listening pleasure.

The Westside Flyers are an enthusiastic group of 25 young violin-ists, ages 4-13, who love to “make music” together. These musi-cians are students of local private violin teacher, Laura Barnette. The Flyers spend a great deal of time taking lessons and practicing at home with their parents to improve their skills. They work on many different styles of music; Bach to fiddle, concertos to trios, Christmas music, waltzes and the blues. The Flyers have performed in several local churches, at Echter’s Greenhouse Fall Fest, for residents at the Westland Meridian, Golden Pond, and Clear Creek Commons. They have provided pre-concert entertainment for the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra. For many years the Flyers and the Children’s Choir of Golden presented a very successful joint spring concert celebrating their mutual love of music. Selected members of the Flyers have formed quartets, Quatro, 4MEN, The Ladies Aid Society and the newest group to begin work over the summer, the J.E.T.S. These quartets love to give concerts around Golden. The Flyers, supported by their parents, are wonderful musicians and even more wonderful generous, kind and hard working children.

Russ Chapman

Chris Thompson & Coral Creek String Band

Originally from Rochester, MN, Chris Thompson has lived and performed in Europe, Mexico, Southern Africa, the Caribbean and throughout the US. In 2001, Chris settled down in Colorado, planted roots and started writing and recording his unique flavor of roots music. With the release of his new record, “The Road Ahead” (produced by Bill Nershi of the String Cheese Incident), Chris Thompson has emerged on the Colorado music scene as a song-writing force appealing to the traditional bluegrass, new-grass and jam-band audiences alike.

The Coral Creek String Band is a highly talented acoustic project from Colorado, playing genre-bending original music and unique renditions of traditional bluegrass tunes and Americana clas-sics. Coral Creek performs the original music of Chris Thompson (guitar/vocals) and features some of the top acoustic players in the Colorado music scene today including Ben Blechman or Zebulon Bowles (fiddle), Jordan Ramsey (mandolin/vocals) and Andrew Bonnis (bass/vocals).

Dave Richey & KC Groves

Growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, David Richey was exposed early to the sounds of Bob Wills, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, and his grand-dad's favorite, Bill Monroe. Richey’s skillful styling on the dobro and flat-top guitar are stunning. He also displays great talent as a lead singer and front man. David makes his home on the front range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains and is earning a reputation for keeping to a true, traditional style of bluegrass and country music.

When K.C. Groves was a young musician she was mentored by bluegrass and acoustic music greats such as Sally Van Meter, Charles Sawtelle, and Laurie Lewis. She has since become a driving force in her own right, passing on that spark and pure joy of playing music. A multi-faceted musician, spirited bandleader and inspiring mentor, Groves’ energy, tenacity, and creativity seem to be bound-less. But she’s simply, “paying it forward,” as she puts it, answering the call to keep the music she loves a living experience.

Adam Kinghorn Quartet

Adam Kinghorn is a Golden native and founding member of the bluegrass group Head for the Hills. Named “Best Bluegrass in Colorado” two years running by Westword magazine, the quartet has been turning heads around the country with its unique blend of energetic bluegrass and original compositions. This summer will mark the group’s ninth year playing together as they take the stage at the 40th annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

Growing up in Colorado has attributed much to Kinghorn’s unique songwriting and shaped his style as an acous-tic musician. Currently, he is being featured in the Golden History Museums’ “Turn it Up” exhibit, which focuses on the many angles of Golden’s rich musical heritage. The Adam Kinghorn Quartet is a newly formed group, taking influence from an eclectic array of musical genres from bluegrass to jazz and blues. Adam will be joined by Joe Lessard on fiddle (Head for the Hills), Alex Johnstone on mandolin (Spring Creek) and Andrew Bonnis on bass (Long Road Home).

Jeff Scroggins & Colorado

Jeff Scroggins and Colorado are a high energy, high mountain “bluegrass explosion,” that features the amazing banjo playing of Jeff Scroggins. Jeff ’s fiery style and lightning fast licks have earned him many fans worldwide, and have left many first time listeners in stunned disbelief! The band also features the award winning man-dolin playing of Jeff ’s son, Tristan Scroggins. Tristan is also anaccomplished songwriter, and his and Jeff ’s original instrumentals play a large role in the band’s unique and energetic sound. The band also features incredible bluegrass vocals, led by the powerful voice of front man Greg Blake. Greg has twice been nominated for SPBGMA’s “Traditional Male Vocalist of the Year” award and his phenomenal bluegrass guitar playing has earned him 9 nomina-tions and an amazing 5 consecutive wins as SPBGMA’s Guitarist of the Year! Annie Savage brings to the group strong vocals and an aggressive fiddle style that is well suited to the band’s high energy approach. KC Groves is truly a force to be reckoned with! Having recorded with such greats as Charles Sawtelle and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin and touring internationally for many years, KC is an internationally renowned musician and songwriter.
