As of Jan. 1, West Shore residents had to find an alternative to their garbage can for their food scraps, due to a ban imple-mented on kitchen waste at the Hartland Landfill.

Before this year, organic materials such as food waste and kitchen scraps made up approximately 30 per cent of the waste at Hartland Landfill, according to the Capital Regional District. In an attempt to extend the life of the landfill, as well as encourage the production of material such as compost and fertilizer, Hartland has been phasing out organic waste at the facility over the last three years, culminating with the full ban on Jan. 1.

Alpine Disposal and Recycling, as one of the major waste haulers in the region, is excited about the new regulations, and has revamped its services in order to help the community abide by them.

“Much of Victoria – Oak Bay, James Bay, View Royal, for example –  have already been doing the program for a while now,” says Heather Baumann, office manager of the Alpine facility on Dunford Avenue in Langford.

“But it wasn’t mandatory, so we were just picking up garbage, and going along our merry little way. But then the ban came into effect at the landfill, so then we’re in the middle as the hauler, and we’re going, ‘OK, we need to come up with a plan so that there are options out there for people.’”

That plan was to create a diverse combi-nation of offerings for people.

That included providing curbside resi-dential pickup in conjunction with what they already do in terms of garbage col-lection, to large bins for commercial facili-ties like restaurants and grocery stores, to drop-off at their Langford facility, incorpo-

rating education on other waste manage-ment practices like composting.

“It’s not mandatory for them to sign up with us, but it’s mandatory for them to have some alternative for their kitchen-scrap waste,” Baumann says.

“If they’re composting using back yard composters, great. If they’re garburating,

great. But if they’re not doing any of that, it means it’s going in the garbage, right? We wanted to have options for our customers, because they can’t be doing that anymore.”

And she says people are getting on board.

Colwood is working towards a new performing arts facility, but they aren’t the only one.

The municipality’s commitment has yielded a 148-page feasibility study and a citizen steering com-mittee looking at possible destina-tions for a West Shore perform-ing arts centre within Colwood. However, the question of where, remains unanswered to date, and Langford Mayor Stew Young said his municipality is asking the same questions.

The Colwood study pointed to Royal Bay Village as a preferred site. But Young said Langford residents have also expressed a strong interest in building an arts facility in their community, which leads to the question of whether there could there be a partner-ship, or even two new performing arts facilities on the West Shore.

“(This) is on the people of the West Shore’s wish list …  people (are saying) they wanted to have a theatre of some sort,” Young said. “We will build one … This is a good-sized community for these types of things and we have to build for them. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.”

Langford council has a proven track record for being developer-friendly. The forthcoming YM-YWCA and partnerships with

Rugby Canada, the Canadian national cycling team and the purchase of a recreation centre on Bear Mountain are only a few examples of their willingness to grow. With that in mind, Young said, a new arts facility is abso-lutely on his agenda and the plan-ning has already begun.

“We would like to tag it onto a public facility so the infrastructure cost can be shared, so we are not building a standalone thing with a

parking lot,” he said. “I can tell you right now you will see something happen. What I like to do in Lang-ford is to set a goal; it’s always good to have. I think we are at the right time that it is attainable and we can do it.”

Young said maximizing every dollar spent by combining it with an existing facility is an important key to the project. He pointed to shared parking and facilities, used by the different functions at differ-

ent times of the day, as one way to drive the price down for Langford taxpayers and make such a venue more viable in the long run.

“There are not many places to go where you have a choice for a dry arena, (golf) putting, a skat-ing rink, a field, and the pool. How great would it be to have another arena and an arts and culture cen-tre? That would be a great cap-ping of a great corridor Langford has built,” he said. “We will do it in a cost effective way where taxes don’t get impacted and would be on a great new facility to use for the next 100 years.”

Langford staff and council are looking into the costs to build and operate such a facility and are researching what has worked in other similar-sized communities, Young said.

While it appears to duplicate the work already completed by Colwood, he said council is open to partnership, but is prepared to go on their own.

“There is nothing wrong with two arts centres within a commu-nity that will have a (larger com-munity) one day. In Victoria, you have the McPherson and Royal Theatre. We will build as long as it is cost-effective, and partner with anyone that wants to, whether it

be Colwood or View Royal,” he said.

“If Colwood wants to partner, absolutely, but right now (we are) spearheading and getting all the information and working on this now. There is always going to be opportunity for co-operation as the group moves forward. It will be a public process. (However) we have to move ahead; that is

what the public has said (and) we will take the lead on this.”

So, after a decade of uncer-tainty, not one, but two munici-palities appear focused on creat-ing a West Shore performing and visual arts facil-ity. As Colwood’s citizen steering committee chair Catharine Chase points out, it’s not just about any one municipality,

but about the entire community.“This is why we are calling it

the West Shore performing arts centre. Because what we envision is a facility that will invite visi-tors, performers and audiences from all over, not just the south end of the Island,” she said. “This will be something tourists will be interested in; performers, actors –  something for the whole com-munity for the West Shore and beyond.”

View Royal council’s early approval of the town’s $150,000 pavement rehabilitation budget was spurred by a desire to get going on a specific section of the Island Highway.

Tuesday’s decision to pass this item on the overall 2015 budget ahead of time was made to take advantage of paving work scheduled for late March by the Capital Regional District for Phase 2 of the E&N Rail Trail through View Royal.

The section of road from Adams Place to the traffic light at the Colwood Interchange and Burnside Road West is in dire need of repair and has started to

rut significantly enough to affect driver safety, said Coun. John Rogers.

“It’s always eco-nomical to team up with another group that needs to do paving for a project,” he said. “When we did the (new) fire hall, the CRD went in and fixed the water main along the Island Highway. It’s about chang-ing project sched-ules to match the (Rail Trail work) as a matter of con-venience.”

A report on the issue from deputy director of engineer-ing, Deb Becelaere, explained that the curb and gutter along the north side of Island High-way would be relocated in con-junction with work on the Rail Trail project.

“Since this will require asphalt removal and replacement, as

well as reinstate-ment of the traffic signal [triggers], it makes mone-tary sense to part-ner with the CRD and carry out the full rehabilitation of the westbound lanes,” she wrote.

Work by town staff on the proj-ect will take place in the evening and early morning hours between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. so as not to disrupt

traffic flows. It is expected to take two to three nights.

The intent is to have the pav-ing and road marking finished in time for the completion of the adjacent section of the Rail Trail, tentatively scheduled for late [email protected]

West Shore Parks and Recreation wants to inspire area residents to implement healthier modes of transportation.

Working toward that goal, it has invited numerous com-munity stakeholders, councillors and community groups to take part in an Active Transportation Forum today (Feb. 20) at the Kinsmen Fieldhouse. The workshop will explore alternative methods to driving students to and from school and community hubs around the West Shore.

“(We hope) they leave the forum with action items and tools to implement a strategic plan within their commu-nity,” said West Shore Parks and Recreation community co-ordinator Bobbi Neal. “We focus on what other meth-ods we can use, as opposed to driving up and dropping off, and how do you safely access them. Walk, ride skate-board, use another mode of transport in your commu-nity.”

Following a successful partnership with the Capital Regional District and the Inter-municipal Advisory Com-mittee developing trails here, the hope is that attendees arm themselves with information they need to help mobi-lize the community, she said.

Many areas of the West Shore have transitioned or are in the process of moving from a rural setting to a more urban one, Neal added, and learning to move through them safely, especially for youth, is important.

The forum includes discussion around what commu-nity infrastructure is needed to promote active transpor-tation, with possible initiatives including walking school buses, car-free days, bike groups and other exercise-ori-ented travel to high-traffic hubs.

“We have two new schools coming on board and (with) human nature being what it is, this is a time of change, so this is probably the easiest time to encourage peo-ple to look at a different mode of transport before they are entrenched in a set pattern or behaviour,” she said. “Those same concepts apply to going to the grocery store or recreation centre; (anywhere) we travel in our com-munity.”

West Shore Parks and Rec. received a $5,700 CRD grant for the forum to help cover the cost of bringing in present-ers from the Hub for Active School Travel (HASTe) group in Vancouver. HASTe partner Kerry Hamilton said their initiatives are all about education, activating kids, schools and communities through walking and cycling.

“I am so glad to hear communities that are growing and increasing and developing are taking this seriously and giv-ing the time in the planning process to make this an impor-tant piece,” she said. “There is a really great trail system (on the West Shore) and it is about connecting community districts together … so people can get outside more.”

Langford park planner Jane Waters, Sooke School Dis-trict Trustee Diana Seaton and others will also give pre-sentations at the forum.

Hamilton will offer up some broad strategies to the full group for ways to discuss the issues in their community. A workshop at the end will see attendees break off into smaller groups to explore more specific action items and solution pieces for their communities. Doing so while infrastructure like sidewalks and bike lanes and forward-thinking active initiatives are being planned out can save money down the line, she said.

“If we can begin this conversation early in the game this saves some retrofitting,” Hamilton said. “Realizing active transport 20 years from now, which is where we are with most communities, we can have this conversation when we build our new high schools, elementary schools, our new community. Then we don’t have to go back and change it all.”

Recycling scrapsis good planning

Back before we began recycling and using the Blue Box system, separating plastics from glass and metal, and putting newspapers and other papers in a separate bag, people used to simply

chuck it all out with the trash. But we soon learned that wasn’t sustainable.

Change can be hard, and for some people, it takes a lot of practice and

creating a new habit.Smokers have learned over time that they

cannot light up in indoor spaces, as per Capital Regional District bylaws; heck, many people quit rather than be relegated to grabbing a few puffs in the cold or wet.

Getting used to no longer being able to mix kitchen scraps in with the regular garbage seems less about begrudgingly accepting a forced behavior, and more about simply figuring out whether you’ll compost in the back yard, use a not-so environmentally friendly garburetor, or have someone take it away.

Options are readily available through waste service providers for people to combine green bin pickup with their regular garbage collection, for a modest fee.

Yes, we’re being asked to take the extra step of separating our organic material from non-compostable garbage. But we prefer to look at the situation as all of us doing the right thing as members of a growing community.

The consequences of – a.k.a. penalties for – mixing organics with regular garbage, initially fall on the haulers dropping off truckloads of full bags to the Hartland Landfill. But eventually, non-compliant residents may receive a talking to from drivers, have an explanatory note left behind, or simply have their trash left at the curb. For multi-unit residential buildings, tossing scraps into the dumpster, if left unchecked, could affect many others.

It really doesn’t need to come to that point. We know our regional landfill would have a far shorter lifespan if this move was not undertaken. And while it will still become full in the not-too-distant future, we’re pleased that the CRD has taken this proactive step as a way to extend the life of the shrinking resource that is our common dump.

It’s up to all us to play our part, for the good of all.

Many Greater Victoria residents are sensitive toward the plight of other species.

Deer, rabbits, horses, calves, etc. are sentient beings. Although some humans still assume we are the only species capable of emotions and physical pain truth is humans are not alone in feeling joy and suffering.

As for the term “cull” what’s with that? A human word invented to cover up our guilt and insensitivity sentencing other species to die simply because we find them inconvenient to our way of life. We need to understand we are killing some other species’ child, mother or father in cold blood.

There is only one species that has overpopulated the planet and produced a way of life which is destroying the balance of nature on this planet. Getting back that balance will not be easy. Finger pointing towards other species for human mistakes is not the answer.

Thoughtful, compassionate solutions for coexistence are there. The Luxton rodeo now gone forever, volunteers giving donations, their expertise and time to come up with solutions to relocate rabbits left by some humans to fend for themselves in an unnatural environment on a busy highway interchange, and those who care enough for deer to give their time and energy to voice concern over the planned killing of a beautiful species are a few examples of compassionate Canadians working selflessly to move us positively forward to a balanced future.

Book provides residentwith B.C. history lesson

I recently enjoyed reading a book about some of British Columbia’s past premiers; from our first premier in 1871 up till Ujjal Dosanjh.

Of course the longest-serving premier, and so part of the only father and son to hold the job, was W.A.C Bennett, who held the office for 20 years. There were also two brothers who were elected premier: the Davie brothers in the 1880s and 1890s. So far, five premiers have died while in office and three have been fired from the job by the lieutenant-governor of the day, the last of whom was a man named Edward G. Prior, over what today we would call conflict of interest.

Theodore Davie decided to build the current legislative buildings in 1892. It had a major cost overrun, totalling $981,359 for a palace that was supposed to cost $500,000 plus or minus 10 per cent.

It was not the government of B.C.’s first cost overrun and as we all know, it would not be the last. Though Davie would live to see his marble palace (really made of granite) open in February 1898, he was no longer premier by that time.

The youngest premier to take office so far is Richard McBride, who assumed the job in 1900 after the second firing. McBride, the first premier born in B.C. while it was still a Crown colony, was appointed to the office at age 32 and called it quits on his 45th birthday. The last B.C. premier to die in office was John Oliver, shortly after his 71st birthday back in 1927. Before his passing, his government passed an

old age pension act. Perhaps the first public pension in Canada, it paid $20 a month to those 70 years or older, although recipients were subject to a means test.

The longest-serving premier in the 1800s was four years. With no party system prior to the early 1900s, the premier’s office was like a revolving door.

Good hearing, poor comprehension? The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newly-developed hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear.

A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the high-frequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not

consider themselves to have a hearing problem. They can hear deep tones with no issue, and often put difficulty understanding speech down to unclear pronunciation. However, the time soon comes when problems with comprehension become annoying.

A new hearing chip has beendeveloped.

Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing chip that restores speech comprehension, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. First, a hearing test

Ginette van Wijngaarden, at Connect Hearing, advises people with hearing loss on the new hearing chip, together with her colleagues.

and speech comprehension analysis is done. Where inner-ear damage is present, a software program analyzes the difference relative to normal hearing. These values are then input into the new Venture hearing chip in the Audéo V, which precisely takes into account and balances the frequency range of the person being tested. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.

Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the Audéo V by calling 888.408.7377

After some surgery and a few weeks’ rehabilitation, a crow injured last month when it was caught in netting above a base-ball backstop in Centennial Park in Langford was cleared for take-off Wednesday.

On Jan. 19, city staff rescued the bird from the netting, where a resident had spotted it earlier fighting for its life with an eagle before other crows intervened. The bird was trapped and help-less after the altercation.

The crow was transported to WildARC in Metchosin, the wild animal rehabilitation branch of the SPCA, where it underwent surgery to repair the extensive damage it had sustained.

According to WildARC wildlife rehabilitator Marguerite Sans, who performed the surgery, the crow still had netting embed-ded in its wing, which had badly torn open the skin on one of its wings. That injury was sutured immediately to prevent further blood loss, but the bird needed to be stabilized for a day before more invasive surgery could be done to repair the damage to the structure of the wing.

After successful surgery and a few weeks’ rehabilitation, he was declared ready to be released on Wednesday.

At the release – back at Cen-tennial Park – Sans said based on the incremental “flight prac-tice” he’d been doing,   which involves progressively gradu-ating birds to larger and larger

aviaries while they recover from injury until it has been deter-mined they are healthy enough to be released,  the bird was healthy and shouldn’t have any lingering effects.

Anyone interested in finding out more about what WildARC is all about has the chance to do so soon, according to Heather Schmitt, assistant manager, who was also at the crow’s release.

“Ordinarily, we need to remain fairly exclusive, because our patients are all wild and very scared of people,” she says. At the end of March, however, the facility will hold its annual open house, where they welcome the public to see what they do.

“We give free tours to the pub-lic and we welcome them behind the scenes so they can see kind of what it takes to get these guys back out into the wild.”

There is no charge for the tours during the open house weekend, but registration is required because of the interest level they see from the public each year.

“It’s a really nice chance for people to be able to see the kind of work we do,” Schmitt says.

You can sign up starting at the beginning of March to attend one of the open house tours, scheduled for March 28 and 29, at [email protected]

DrivewayCanada.ca | Welcome to the driver’s seat

Braving the winter in search of summer wineThrough rain, fog, snow and ice, we drove in search of Syrah in the Okanagan Valley. The 1,000-kilometre journey was a good winter test of the all-wheel-drive 2015 Acura MDX elite edition. But it was also a quest to collect exam-ples of the fermented homegrown Syrah grape to be poured by Okana-gan winemakers at next week’s Vancouver Interna-tional Wine Festival.Drinking and driving don’t mix but for this Okanagan wine fan, the reward came at day’s end or when somebody else took the wheel at midday! The idea for the jaunt came when I learned Honda’s premium brand was a festival sponsor. My focus sharpened when Syrah was named the feature grape and it was revealed that 55 wineries from Australia would show off their version of the French grape – the big and often fruity Shiraz. Past tastings told me B.C. could hold its own in this duel. Indeed 16 of our best winemakers will uncork Syrah. The Driveway car pulled into eight of those vineyards but it was not an easy drive. Though the forecast snow did not materialize in the Fraser Valley, gusts did test surefootedness. The true winter test was found along the twisty Hope-Princ-eton highway. In the summer, it’s a fun roller coaster ride but hidden black ice and patches around every corner made it a steering wheel gripper.

The long straights in Manning Park tempt-ed me to open up the 3.5-litre SOHC, V6 and let all 290 horses roar. A sudden slip towards the ditch and a rear sway put paid to that notion and I was grateful for traction control. Rain swept us through the Similkameen Valley but cleared as we dropped down into Osoyoos. First stop would be Black Hills Estate Winery, on Black Sage Road, in Oliver. It has magnificent views of the Okanagan valley. Its

interpretation of Syrah is mouth-filling and much closer to its Rhone Valley origins than that Oz style. The same can be said of that served by TIME Estate Winery across the road, which opens to the public this summer.Minutes later, we had swept across the valley to the castle-like structure that is Road 13, where owners Mick and Pam Luckhurst entertained and sent us packing with a variety of blends. The overnight stop was neighbouring Tinhorn Cellars, where its generous co-owner and winemaker Sandra Oldfield extracted a delicious Syrah from her private cellar. The next day, a yellow orb appeared above while passing by the beautiful Vaseaux Lake and into Okanagan Falls. We spun onto Eastside Road and skirted Skaha Lake to Penticton. It’s a quiet, fast road and it enabled me to play with paddle shifters.

The view from Poplar Grove over Okana-gan Lake is spectacular as is the Syrah, which, like the best of the winery’s reds, benefits from the extra aging afforded by cellaring it for a couple of years longer than the norm. A three-kilometre side trip to Red Rooster netted a Reserve Syrah, which exuded yummy plum and cherry from its neck, once opened! One more stop before a relaxing evening spent staring over the lake while sipping on a suite balcony at the Summerland Waterfront Resort. The snowy and very icy single track to the new Sage Hills Vineyard in Summerland required careful navigation. The reward was a barrel tasting with winemaker Andrea Lee and vineyard manager Keenan Thrussell. The new vintage had yet to be bottled but a rosé version hit the spot later!Time to return to the coast via Sandhill Wines in Kelowna. Howard Soon, a B.C. born industry pioneer, makes Syrah from vineyards in the south of the valley and a special ‘small lots’ version from a

single vineyard.By the time the rear two rows were lowered to accommodate the purchased cases of wine, the seven-seat MDX was strictly a two-seater. Despite its load, it leapt up to the Pennask Summit on the Okanagan Connector as fast the outside temperature dropped to minus five. The Coquihalla Highway was bathed in sunlight and the descent to Hope was smooth and quiet but for the rattle from the bottles.Bring on the Aussies! If you can’t get to the festival tasting room, tour Okanagan wine country this summer… with a designated driver, of course.

The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) has an-nounced (... drum-roll, please) Subaru Legacy as the 2015 Canadian Car of the Year and Ford F-150 as the 2015 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year. “Subaru had an outstanding year in 2014,” said Shiro Ohta, chair-man, president and CEO of Subaru Canada, Inc. “In the past year, Subaru sold a record number of vehicles and celebrated a new milestone in company history with unprecedented sales success. This award from AJAC is a wonderful tribute to our recent achievements.” The completely redesigned 2015 Subaru Legacy was engineered in Japan and is now built in the USA. Legacy is the only car in its class with standard all-wheel-drive. A variety of engineering changes, including Active Grille Shutter system and a new (CVT) automatic transmission, have helped achieve a substantial improvement in fuel economy. The greenest Legacy comes with a PZEV version of its 2.5-litre horizontally opposed (Boxer) 4-cylinder engine and the top line editions come with a 3.6-litre engine. The new Lineartronic CVT has a lock-up torque converter and a manual paddle shifter operating mode.Legacy boasts one of the roomiest interiors in the midsize sedan segment and has received "Top Safety Pick" rating from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It’s also probably more affordable than you think, as new Legacy has a start price of just $23, 495 (manual) and $24,795 for the CVT edition. To reach the final stage of this annual competition Legacy first claimed the Best New Family Car (under $30,000) award, when the initial category winner votes were tabulated. The other three auto candidates for this (best of the best) top award were Hyundai Genesis, Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC and the Volkswagen Golf. Utility Vehicle of the Year, the Ford F-150 is familiar with the AJAC awards podium, as it already scooped the 2015 Best New Technology Innovation Award earlier this year. And this is the F-150’s second overall Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year Award, having also claimed

it back in 2004. “We are honoured that the 2015 F-150 has been named AJAC’s 2015 Utility Vehicle of the Year,” said Dianne Craig, president and CEO, Ford of Canada. “Our game-changing use of aluminum alloy is raising the competitive bar for pickups and we are hum-bled to be considered an innovator in the industry, committed to providing our customers the most capable and fuel efficient pickup ever.”Ford uses a special heat treatment that nearly doubles (com-

pared to steel) the strength of the military grade aluminum (magnesium) alloy body panels used in the new F150, making them more resistant to dents. A lighter truck body increases payload and towing capability and it also has positive influences on braking, handling, ride and acceleration. Massively popular, the F-150 is already the top-selling vehicle in Canada and has been for the last five years. Ford F-series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for 49 con-secutive years. Other finalists for this award

were the Porsche Macan and Subaru Outlander.Voting for Canadian Car of the Year started when 73 auto-motive journalists from all parts of Canada gathered, last October in Niagara Falls, Ontario, for a five-day test-drive evaluation event known as “TestFest.” It was hosted by the Niagara Parks Commission, Shell Canada was the official fuel supplier and the accounting firm KPMG tabulated all vote results. Same-day, back-to-back testing is done to ensure fair and objective comparisons. At this year's event 1,640 test drives were made by journalists and this yielded approximately 106,405 data points and over 500 category ballots. Complete voting data and performance test results are available on the AJAC web site: www.ajac.ca "TestFest is the most intensive new vehicle evaluation process on the planet,” said Canadian Car of the Year Co-Chair, Gary Grant. “No other organization employs such stringent testing methods

to determine their car of year award winners. Data driven and Canadi-an expertise: that’s what makes an AJAC winner.”

And the winners are Subaru and Ford

“Voting for Canadian Car of the Year started when 73 automotive journalists from all parts of Canada gath-ered for a five-day test-drive evaluation.’’

Montreal – If there is one part of this vast country that knows about winter and winter driving, it is the province of Quebec. Winter weather can stretch from November until April, which is why this frost bitten part of the country mandates winter tires on all vehicles and was the perfect spot to showcase two products from Mercedes Benz, the B-Class and CLA-Class. Both are now equipped with Mercedes 4Matic all wheel drive (AWD) system. Touching down in Montreal, the outside temperature was heading to minus twenty three overnight and minus nineteen for a daytime high, plus snow, lots of snow.

LooksBoth the B-Class hatchback and CLA sedan are based on the Mer-cedes small car platform that is also shared with the GLA compact crossover. The B and GLA are sold with front wheel drive (FWD) and now AWD. The latest B-Class was introduced a few years ago and gets a mild facelift, including a new grille, lower chin spoiler, different

wheels and a new accent line down the side. The CLA was just introduced last year so external up-dates will have to wait another couple of years. The B-Class is a taller hatchback design that provides a useful package for young families, including bigger rear windows and a large hatch and cargo space.

InsideBoth the B-Class and CLA receive nice updates for 2015 on the inside. Both share the same dash so updating both made sense. The screen that sits front and centre on the dash, like and iPad is larger, moving to a standard 7-inch screen or optional 8-inch screen on cars equipped with navigation. This screen is controlled with a small knob between the front seats. Other updates include a sportier and very comfortable steering wheel, a revised stereo head unit and a new instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. Heated seats are now standard equipment for 2015 but heated rear seats and a heated steering

wheel are not available in these cars. The B-Class 4Matic is a $2,200 premium over the FWD version, starting at $33,500. The CLA has the same $2,200 charge for AWD, starting at $36,800. One nice feature available on the CLA is an “exclusive” package that includes a leather dashboard with French stitching for $2,300.

DriveTo explore the abilities of these two new products, the Olympic rowing basin used for the 1976 Montreal games was partially plowed, exposing sheet ice with a fresh sprin-kling of snow. This provided a great example of the limits of grip and the abilities of the electronic stability program, in conjunction with the AWD system. On sheet ice, there is no grip, so sliding is easy. It was on the rural roads outside of Montreal near the ski resort of Bromont that the 4Matic system proved useful. The system is designed to provide power to the front wheels as often as possible and instantly transfer power to the rear wheels when extra grip is need-ed, it all happens in a nanosecond. The maximum amount of power sent to the rear wheels if fifty percent. I noticed that these cars, when placed in “sport” mode actually allow the car to slip and slide without the electronics being too oppressive.

VerdictMercedes has had enormous success with its 4Matic AWD system, accounting for eighty five percent of its sales. With the introduction of these two new models in late 2014, the number has jumped to over ninety percent. This opens up the safety and stability of AWD to a larger market. One thing to keep in mind is these two products offer great value if the buyer keeps and eye on the options. The “must have” package include the Premium Package for an additional $3800 on both the B-Class and CLA. This includes automatic climate control, a huge panoramic sunroof, rear view camera, blind spot system and navigation. This brings the 4Matic price on the B-Class to $37,300 and $40,600 on the CLA. Not overly expensive for a Mercedes Benz product but pricier than the starting price suggests. Should you consider the 4Matic version of the B-Class and CLA? Absolutely, based on the added level of security, grip and improved resale value. [email protected]

SUNDAY, MARCH 1st 2015Reader Photo OF THE WEEK

Colwood resident Michel Besler told us he feels blessed to live so close to the ocean and Esquimalt Lagoon.

He snapped this photo of the surf during a small winter storm.

“I love the contrast of colours in this picture, from the driftwood on the beach, to the wave coming in, the ocean beyond that with the ship in the background, and the sky beyond that,” he wrote. “Just goes to show you that even in the greys of winter, it’s still so beautiful here!”

We agreed with Michel and honored him with our Reader Photo of the Week honours.

If you’ve got a photo from the West Shore of people, places or things and want to share it with our readers, the Goldstream News Gazette can help. Every week, we publish our pick from submitted reader photos. To have yours considered for publication, simply email us a high-resolution .jpg copy to [email protected].

Please include your name, contact information including municipality of residence, where you took the photo and what you like about the image. Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Fridays to be included for consideration for the following week’s paper.

Weekly winners will also be posted on the Gazette’s Facebook page. Good luck!

Various options available for do-it-yourself compostingThroughout December, she

says, they had lineups out the door and had trouble keeping up with demand for household recep-tacles. She also says there will always be some resistance to new things, but she feels people will eventually come to terms with it.

“When the Blue Box program came in, it was the same thing,” Baumann says. “People said, ‘I’m not going to sort my cans and glass,’ but now you drive around Langford and Colwood on Blue Box day and some houses have seven boxes out. It’s just a matter of people getting used to it.”

A big part of getting people used

to it is just a matter of letting peo-ple know what they need to do to comply, and give them the options to make it easy to do so.

“We’re doing our best to comply with the ban, give people options and educate them. It’s all new to people, and there hasn’t been a lot of information flowing to the resi-dents. Some people are excited, because they’ve been waiting for this to finally happen … We don’t want people to see it as an incon-venience.”

“It’s adding something – an extra service to help the residents comply with the ban. We’re happy to take phone calls from people with questions, and we do a lot of that,” she says, because there are

a lot of options for people. The base cost for curb side

pickup for kitchen and food scraps is $4.95 per month – in addition to your garbage service pickup costs –  which includes the containers (provided by Alpine), pickup and processing of the waste. Kitchen scrap pickup happens alongside garbage pickup, and on the same day, and sometimes even using the same truck.

“We do get calls with angry people who say, ‘I went through the effort to separate it, and you just threw it in the garbage any-way,’” Baumann says, which is when they need to explain that they have retrofitted some of their trucks to have separate compart-

ments for kitchen scraps, so it only appears it’s all going to the same place.

Another option for residential food waste is to purchase the con-tainers and bring them to a drop off location like Alpine’s or directly to the landfill yourself.

Or, of course, you can do at-home composting, which is an excellent way to make your own nutrient-rich soil for gardening, and fully encouraged by the CRD.

Meat, bones, fat, grains and cooked foods shouldn’t be just thrown in a pile of dirt in a back-yard compost bin, however, but Green Cone digesters – which treat these products –  have now been piloted in the region. More infor-

mation on Green Cone digesters can be found either by contacting the Greater Victoria Compost Edu-cation Centre at compost.bc.ca or 250-386-WORM (9676) or by find-ing the downloadable brochure on the CRD’s website (crd.bc.ca) under the “Regional Kitchen Scraps Strategy” [email protected]

Want the Real Beauty Benefits of Collagen?

Generate It. Don’t Eat It!

By now you know. Adding body collagen directly reduces wrinkles, increases skin elasticity, and adds vital moisture to your skin. Indirectly, collagen thickens and strengthens your hair. You may also know that collagen production slows by 1% per year after the age of 21. Can you gain it back? Yes. But not by eating collagen. You see, collagen is a protein. When you ingest it, your body breaks it down, like any other protein, and uses it as food. When you want the real beauty benefits of collagen, you have to generate it.

BioSil™ generates collagen by activating the collagen producing cells in your body known as fibroblasts. It is clinically proven to increase collagen formation. In fact, in the clinical trial the women taking BioSil™ reduced wrinkles by 30%, increased skin elasticity by 89% and thickened and strengthened their hair by 13% compared to women not taking BioSil™. So when you want genuine visible results from collagen, generate it, don’t eat it. Experience the beautiful difference for yourself!

Historic St. Mary’s Church in Metchosin (current photo left) remains on its original site as when it was built in 1872. Additional grown trees, including a commemorative coronation oak standing in front of the church, toward the left of the photo, give the church yard a different feel than when the archival photo was taken around the turn of the last century.

Sometimes known as the Easter Church because of the profusion of erythroniums or wild lilies massed throughout the two-acre property, St. Mary’s Church has been at the heart of Metchosin since 1872.

The land was donated by John Witty and in a matter of months it was built by volunteers. In all, it cost about $1,300 with $100 being contributed by Gov. James Douglas.

The first adult to be buried in the cemetery was John Witty himself.

He had fixed a horse’s shoe as a favour to a passer by on a Sunday, and without the protection of his leather apron injured his knee with the hammer. Within a week gangrene set in and without modern medicine he died.

The first burial was of a Helgesen child carried away by measles, another horror prevented by modern medicine.

Happily, the first christening was also a Helgesen child. John Lawrence and Fanny Lethbridge were the first couple married in St. Mary’s. All in all a busy first year for the little country church.

The Now picture shows the only addition made which houses the furnace and tool storage.

A dedicated group of volunteers meet every Monday morning, rain or shine, throughout the year to maintain the church and cemetery. The building was granted heritage status in 1990 and a dedication sign was erected last year facing Metchosin Road.

The lovely spreading oak tree nearest the tool shed was planted on June 25th, 1937 by the Metchosin Farmer’s Institute to commemorate the coronation of King George VI.

The seedling came from Windsor Park in Oak Bay and was one of the many oaks the Farmer’s and Women’s Institutes distributed across Canada to honour the event.

Tough on the turfJuan de Fuca’s Tristin Austin sends a pass toward the crease as Bays United/Peninsula defender Martin Yong scrambles to get into position. The under-18 teams were playing a Vancouver Island Premier League soccer match at Goudy Field on Sunday.

Hatley Castle beckons to road runners

If you haven’t already signed up for this Sun-day’s Hatley Castle 8K road race, you can still reg-ister up to race day.

The event, the fourth of eight in the Frontrun-ners Island Race Series, will attract no shortage of runners, from the serious to the recreational. While the more advanced athletes in the field may be out to secure series points or record a personal best time, others will simply be taking the oppor-tunity to do something healthy, while challenging themselves on a course known for its killer open-ing hill.

Race director Nick Walker hopes for no repeat of last year, when a rare snowfall pushed the race back a week.

“This is the fourth year for Frontrunners Ath-letic Club to host the event and we are anticipating over 400 participants to take part,” he said.

Langford firefighters will be on hand cooking up free post-race hot dogs for participants and taking donations for muscular dystrophy research and support. Royal Bay Bakery will provide freshly-baked treats.

After three races, the Prairie Inn Harriers lead the club standings with 1,557 points followed by Comox Valley Road Runners with 927 and Nanai-mo’s Bastion Running Club with 739.

The race gets underway at 11 a.m. Feb. 22, start-ing and finishing at the Royal Roads University gymnasium.

Online registrations ended Wednesday, but run-ners can sign up at Frontrunners, 123-755 Gold-stream Ave., tomorrow from noon to 4 p.m. ($30 adults, $25 students), or at Royal Roads on race day ($35/$30) before the start.

Big things have been happening at Juan de Fuca Lacrosse. In celebration – and in fact, as one of those big things

– they recently unveiled their new jerseys, a slick green, black and white number that the teams will be sporting as of this coming season.

According to Susan Atkinson, jersey manager for the organization, the new jerseys were “about a year long pro-cess from idea to delivery.”

Herself and two others used a design contest to generate ideas for the jerseys before sorting through the over 200 submissions by over 70 designers from all over the globe. The three finalists were then taken to the JDF executive to be voted on, and even then, they chose two.

“We are extremely proud of the new logo and jersey we have produced,” Atkinson says. “The players gave us some fantastic feedback at the reveal (last Saturday) and are all very excited and are looking forward to playing the 2015 season in a fresh new look.

But although the jerseys are a great new addition to the association, they haven’t been their main focus of late, according to JDF Lacrosse 1st vice president Jenal Coakley.

“Our big push this year was to get all-female lacrosse teams,” she says. And it looks as though that big push has borne fruit, because they are currently accepting regis-trations for these squads in collaboration with the other lacrosse associations in the region.

“We are super excited to finally have the girls program going in Victoria,” Coakley says. “The planning started back in 2012 when the Female Nationals were hosted at what was then Bear Mountain. The funds raised from that event have been sitting waiting for the right time to launch the girls

program – and 2015 is it,” Coakley says.Nanaimo, Coakley says, has worked really hard and spent

all this time developing their teams, “and it’s great that they’ll now have another place to play on the Island.”

All the lacrosse associations have worked very closely and cooperate very well in developing their various leagues and teams, and in making games happen, Coakley says.

“Vancouver comes to us, we don’t go across to them, but we pick them up at the ferry and take them to games, and then take them back to the ferry afterward,” she adds, high-lighting the level of co-operation and co-ordination involved logistically between the associations.

“If we could get Cowichan involved, we’d be able to form an Island league,” Coakley says, which could be a reality in the near future, as they have started having “drop-in ses-sions” similar to how the JDF’s girl’s teams started forming this past January. Those sessions encourage interested or inquiring girls drop in to organized practices and learn the game for free to see if they like the sport and want to get more involved. If enough girls take a liking to it, and want to play regularly, teams can start to be formed and games can start to be scheduled.

Teams need a minimum of 10 players to field a squad, and can dress a maximum of 18. Coakley says she can confirm enough registrations have come in for the Novice and Ban-tam squads to form teams, and the Pee Wee team is getting close to having enough players to meet the minimum.

The league will run from March to the end of June, accord-ing to Coakley, and there are also additional opportunities for the girls to travel to the mainland for “female-only” tour-naments, if they wish. The Juan de Fuca Association will also be hosting a women’s bracket as part of their annual tournament in March, as well.

Each association (Esquimalt, JDF, Peninsula and Saanich) will be home to an all-female team. Girls born in 1999-2000 (Midget) and 2001-2002 (Bantam) will play out of Saanich; girls born in 2003-2004 (Pee Wee) will play out of Peninsula; girls born in 2005-2006 (Novice) will play out of JDF and girls born in 2007-2008 will play out of Esquimalt.

Check out jdflacrosse.com for more information or to

register. Girls must register in the catchment area in which they live, but will then be placed on the team they will play for based on age after registration is complete. More on the new “female-only” lacrosse system – including registration fees – can be found at the bottom of the box on the left under “Girls Lacrosse.”

Realtors lend expertice, often go above and beyond during the buying/selling processRosie Townshend-CarterVictoria News

The real estate market is diverse and changes with clients’ needs.

In Greater Victoria, “expert” real estate agents are specialized in everything from waterfront proper-ties, condominiums and senior cli-ents.

Like any buyer in the real estate market looking for a specialized property, you want someone with the knowledge to help you find your dream location.

Seniors’ real estate specialist Vicky Turner says seniors are gener-ally moving from properties they’ve lived at for numerous years.

“Many of them have owned real estate for a long time and haven’t been in the market for many years,” she says.

A homeowner reentering the mar-ket after 20 years will find the pace much faster since the introduction of online listings and social media.

“They want somebody who is able to navigate the waters that are a little more complicated then what they are used to.”

For senior clients, they also want a relatable agent, an advantage Turner has.

“I am in my 60s myself, I have salt and pepper hair.”

Luxury condominium expert Scott Piercy with Engel & Völkers says like other professions you need experts.

“It’s like law, you have someone who deals with divorce or taxes. People feel more comfortable.”

Although the condominium mar-

ket is not huge in Victoria, the mar-ket is still there.

“With the boomer generation retiring and some making the move to Victoria, we saw the market was under-serviced,” Piercy says.

Something most people don’t think about is the way the weather plays a hand in the market. Victo-ria’s early spring is helping to boost the spring influx of buyers early.

“It has been fairly steady with the sunshine, we’re having what feels like an early spring so that’s in the market.”

Weather also works to the advan-tage of Dockside Realty, an agency based on Pender Island as well as Saturna Island. Dockside’s main focus is helping buyers in the mar-ket for waterfront properties.

Sam Boyte, co-owner of Dockside Realty, grew up on the Gulf Islands which helps him to help potential buyers.

“It’s nice because if someone calls about a piece of land, we probably know and can tell them about it.”

The other advantage is what most buyers overlook.

“We can tell them about the dif-ferent ocean fronts and what kind of sun exposer they would be getting.”

Boyte also takes a more recre-ational approach to showing clients perspective waterfront properties.

“We have a small boat we run from Pender to Saturna. It’s a nice way to show properties on the water.”

What all the experts agree on, is that buyers like to have some-one who they are comfortable with and can give them more detailed, “expert” advice.

Q: WHAT ABOUT LIVING IN

LANGFORD?

HomeFinderFind a place to call home

According to the Victoria Property Group, as of Feb. 16, there are 298 listings in Langford, the average price of those listings is $456,808, and the highest priced prop-erty is $4.2-million.

“Located in the foot-hills of Mount Finlayson on Vancouver Island’s south-ern tip, Langford is close enough to Victoria to allow an easy commute and con-venient access to the main-land as well as the world. Its residents also appreciate the local concentration of wholesale and retail enter-prises, as well as light indus-trial and myriad small busi-ness endeavors. Its location, with portions of three lakes within its area, is perfect for leisure-time activities as well. Goldstream Provincial Park is located here, as is a part of Thetis Lake Regional Park,” is the description of the com-munity on their website, vicrealestate.ca.

They also add that Lang-ford is known for its “innova-tive and consistent approach to growth and development, and has become a model for other communities because of its commercial zoning poli-cies, as well as the envy of residential developers due to an emphasis on energy effi-ciency and affordability.”

Bulldogs girls hopingto build on momentumBelmont girls basketball team entered Islands on high noteMike DaviesNews Gazette staff

After defeating Nanaimo’s Dover Bay Dolphins in a neutral-site, win-and-you’re-in game in Duncan Tuesday night, the Bel-mont Bulldogs senior girls bas-ketball team are on their way to Port Alberni for the Island AAA championships.

The West Shore girls came out hard early in the first quar-ter, led by Isla Swanwick, who scored eight points on her first three shots of the game –  two three-pointers and a deuce – but the Bulldogs were taking fouls on defence and giving up free throws that allowed the Dol-phins to keep the game close with singles.

Belmont coaches soon got a feel for where how their oppo-nent could be exploited, how-ever, and the ’Dogs turned it on late in the first quarter and never

looked back, taking the game by a final score of 72-54.

While that sounds like a domi-nant win, the final score was closer than the game really was, as Belmont dominated on both sides of the ball all night.

“I really think (dominating like we did) will only add to the girls’ confidence,” Belmont head coach Brad Lidstone said.

“Once we had a healthy lead, we were able to rest our start-ers and other players got qual-ity minutes and stepped up. We really wanted to keep pushing with our bench players so that they also gained that important confidence going into Islands.”

Lidstone said making it to the Island championships was one of the team’s main goals for the season, set out way back in November.

“We are in tough against Oak Bay,” he said in reference to yes-terday’s opening game of the tournament. “But we are confi-dent in our play and know that the top two get an automatic berth to provincials and third place gets to play a challenge game to get in.”

Lidstone feels they have the

talent, both on and beside the court, to challenge for a title.

“Our team versatility really allows for the opportunity to match up well against any type of team,” he said. “We (as coaches) create a plan and we let the girls work within that framework,” adding that making in-game changes to exploit per-ceived weaknesses in the oppo-sition, as they did Tuesday night in Duncan, makes them a real threat.

It also helps that they have talent like Swanwick (25 points in the win over Dover Bay and easily the most dominant player on either side of the ball), a pair of tall, talented players who can play under the basket in Jess Thomsen (21 points and 19 rebounds Tuesday night) and Claire Church, and someone like Alysha Walton running the offence from the point guard position, bringing the ball up the floor and making that crucial first pass into the zone.

Reaume ready to roll at DaytonaStock car driver Josh Reaume,

who hung his hat in Highlands for a time and still largely considers it to be home, is living a dream this weekend in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Reaume, 25, who competed part-time as a rookie on NASCAR’s Nationwide Series in 2014, lines up tomorrow (Feb. 21) in the white-and-red No. 97 Obaika Racing Camaro for his first start of 2015 in the renamed XFinity Series’ Alert Today Florida 300 at Daytona Inter-national Speedway.

“I’m very excited. I don’t think it’s fully sunk in yet,” he said en route to the iconic Daytona with

team primary sponsor, Nigerian businessman Victor Obaika. “As a kid, I always dreamed of going to Daytona and getting to race there.”

Reaume ran on a race-to-race basis last season and was often told to park his cars after less than 100 laps. He’s thrilled to be running a full competitive season this year, with plenty of resources behind him. The team has purchased six cars, has a crew of eight profes-sionals and is led by crew chief and NASCAR veteran Dan Stillman.

The race starts at 12:30 p.m. PST and can be seen here on the Fox Sports/Speed channel on Shaw.
