The University of Rochester has a long history of innovation and partnering with outstanding medical and community organizations like the American Heart Association. The University of Rochester Medical Center American Heart Association Training Center is pleased to continue this tradition by bringing participants the latest information on pediatric resuscitation science based on the scientific conclusions of the International Guidelines 2005 Conference on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.

There are also new options for obtaining your PALS card. In addition to the traditional 2-day Provider Course and 1-day Retraining Course, providers can now participate in PALS Online. This option offers flexibility for busy professionals by presenting the full Provider Course through a combination of online learning modules and classroom skills testing and can be used for either Original certification or Retraining. (See page 8 for more details.)

Another new program being launched this year is PALS “On the Road.” PALS can now be offered to staff on-site at their medical office or hospital. Course DescriptionThese courses are based on the scientific conclusions of the International Guidelines 2005 Conference on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. They meet the standards of the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics for the training of providers in pediatric advanced life support.

The goal of each course is to teach students the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and provide initial management to the seriously ill or injured child. The courses are designed for physicians, nurses, advanced emergency medical care technicians and other health care providers who have occasion to evaluate and treat seriously ill or injured children.

Course ObjectivesAt the conclusion of each course, participants should be able to

Recognize impending respiratory failure and shock in pediatric patients Initiate treatment based on the patient’s physiologic status as identified

by rapid cardiopulmonary assessment Identify and treat common pediatric cardiac (unstable) arrhythmias Evaluate and stabilize the pediatric trauma victim Initiate the first 20 minutes of pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course materials, do not represent income to the Association.

An administrative fee of $50.00 will be deducted from all refunds for cancellations or transfers made prior to 10 calendar days before the course of attendance. No refunds will be issued for cancellations or transfers made 10 days or less before course of scheduled attendance. No transfers will be permitted between series. No refunds will be issued for international cancellations.

U of R CME Voucher ProgramThe CME Voucher Award Program has been developed to recognize the efforts of the Medical School’s community based preceptors, to encourage their continued involvement and to acknowledge the importance of their contributions.

Vouchers can be redeemed ONLY for activities registering through the University of Rochester Office of Continuing Professional Education. Instructions for use are on the vouchers. A limited number of Voucher registrations will be available for any given activity. Vouchers are redeemed on a first come – first served basis.

U of R Nursing Contact Hour Coupon Award ProgramThis program has been developed to recognize the efforts of the School of Nursing’s preceptors, to encourage their continued involvement, and to acknowledge the importance of their contributions.

Coupons can be redeemed for activities registering through the University of Rochester Office of Continuing Professional Education, the School of Nursing, and the Center for Lifelong Learning at the Community Nursing Center at the School of Nursing.

Course MaterialsRetraining course attendees will not receive the PALS Provider Manual (© 2002 American Heart Association). This manual was provided to individuals who attended either the PALS Provider or Retraining Course at the URMC Training Center in the years 2002 and 2003. Please take the opportunity to review this manual before attending this session. Participants must use the most current Provider Manual.

SPECIAL MODULESTo address the needs of specific participant groups, the University of Rochester PALS courses now offer participants the opportunity to register for special modules. These modules, developed to cover key topic areas, are geared towards the enhancement of the participants’ learning experience and utilization of information in their daily practice.

Trauma/Spine Immobilization: This interactive module provides an overview of management of pediatric trauma, emphasizing the “ABCDE” format of the primary survey/initial assessment that is performed at the same time the spine is immobilized.

Coping with Death: This video-based discussion and interactive session is designed to prepare participants to assist families, coworkers, and themselves in effectively dealing with the death of an infant or child.

Children with Special Health Care Needs: This module emphasizes children having or being at risk for chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional conditions who are dependent on technology that creates specific risks, and how to evaluate and treat technology-dependent children.

Newly Born: This interactive module is designed to prepare the participant to assess, manage, and stabilize the newly delivered infant in emergency circumstances.

PALS ONLINE

Course DescriptionThe PALS Online Course is an approved American Heart Association Program offering flexibility for busy professionals. Participants complete 6 learning modules at their own pace from the convenience of any computer with internet access, such as home, office, or laptop. The modules are available in either EMS or hospital format. To receive an AHA PALS Course completion card, participants must attend a 1-day, hands-on Skills & Assessment Session, where they will be instructed through skills stations and evaluated through scenarios and take a written exam.

These courses meet the standards of the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics for the training of providers in pediatric advanced life support. They are based on the scientific conclusions of the International Guidelines 2005 Conference on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. This course may also be used for recertification.

Course ObjectivesThe goals of this program are to provide learners with:

The information needed to recognize infants and children at risk for pulmonary arrest The information and strategies needed to prevent cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and

children The cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to resuscitate and stabilize infants and

children in respiratory failure, shock, or cardiopulmonary arrest

Online ModulesDuring the web portion of the program, you will complete a pretest followed by 6 learning

modules. The learning modules are set up as interactive scenarios. You work at your own pace and have the opportunity throughout the module to go to other resources on the Web and return to the spot where you left off. Each module concludes with a brief test. The modules cover six topics of the course:

Respiratory Failure Shock from Hypovolemia (Non-Trauma) Newly Born Resuscitation SVT/Arrhythmia Trauma Cardiopulmonary Arrest

Participants are advised to allow 2 hours per module for completion. There is no limit to the number of hours that may be spent to finish the online portion. However, participants must complete the modules, fill out the survey, and print the Part 1 Completion certificate prior to attending the prescheduled 1-day Skills & Assessment Session. Completion certificates are valid for 6 months from the date they are printed.

To access PALS Online, go to myamericanheart.org and register. Then search for PALS. The online portion costs $100.00, payable online. Each online purchase is final, and no refunds are available. Please make sure and schedule your 1-day Skills & Assessment Session before purchasing the online portion.
