The W 1&2, 4-post m i n e r a l c l a i m s a r e l o c a t e d 4 km nor thwes t o f B e a v e r d e l l , R.C., o r 6 km nor thwes t o f t h e well-known Highland B e l l S i l v e r F i n e . The c l a i m s , c o n s i s t i n g o f one u n i t each , were s t a k e d by t h e w r i t e r i n 1978 t o cove r t h e workings o f t h e h i s t o r i c I n y o and Ackworth g o l d - s i l v e r p r o s p e c t s .

Dur ing t h e 1 ~ZO'S, e x t e n s i v e s u r f a c e and underground workings on t h e Inyo-Ackworth p r o s p e c t exp lo red a narrow s h e a r zone t h a t c o n t a i n e d v a l u e s o f up t o 17 g/ tonne go ld and 272 g/tonne s i l v e r . Only a few small sh ipmen t s o f o r e were made from t h e p r o p e r t y a t t h e t ime. S p o r a d i c e x p l o r a t i o n work has been con- duc ted on t h e p r o p e r t y s i n c e t h e 19201s, b u t no f u r t h e r s h i p - ments o f o r e have been made.

I n r e c e n t y e a r s t h e w r i t e r h a s conducted g e o l o g i c a l , VLF-EM and b iogeochemica l s u r v e y s on t h e W 1Pr2 m i n e r a l c la ims . T h i s year a ground magnetometer s u r v e y was conducted ove r t h e same ground i n J u l y w i t h l i m i t e d s u c c e s s .

The b iogeochemica l s u r v e y proved t o be t h e most e f f e c t i v e s u r v e y i n o u t l i n i n g t h e Inyo-Ackworth s h e a r zone and a n ex ten- s i o n o f t h i s t y p e o f s u r v e y o n t o t h e W2 m i n e r a l c l a im i s recommended.

G e o l o g i c a l mapping by t h e w r i t e r i n 1979 r e v e a l e d t h a t most o f t h e o l d workings o f t h e Inyo-Ackworth c l a i m s a re c o n c e n t r a t e d a l o n g a s i n g l e s h e a r zone. G o l d and s i l v e r v a l u e s were o b t a i n e d from p o c k e t s o f p y r i t e , g a l e n a and s p h a l e r i t e m i n e r a l i z a t i o n found a s s o c i a t e d w i t h vuggy q u a r t z v e i n m a t e r i a l i n f i l l i n g p o r t i o n s o f t h e s h e a r zone.

I n a d d i t i o n t o t h e g e o l o g i c a l mapping (F$./iorrison, 19791, t h e w r i t e r h a s conducted a VLF-EF: s u r v e y ( N o r r i s o n , 1984) and two b iogeochemica l s u r v e y s (Mor r i son , 1986, 1987) on t h e p r o p e r t y .

The r e s u l t s o f t h i s y e a r ' s ground magnetometer s u r v e y , c o n s i s t i n g o f 4.5 l i n e a l k i l o m e t r e s , a r e p l o t t e d on Nap W-89-1 accompanying t h i s r e p o r t .

The f o r e s t cove r on t h e W 1&2 m i n e r a l c l a i m s i s made up o f Douglas f i r r a n g i n g from new growth t o f u l l y mature t imber . The f o r e s t na r rowly escaped t h e d e v a s t a t i n g B e a v e r d e l l f o r e s t f i r e o f t h i s summer (1989).

A l l o f t h e o l d mine workings and l a r g e b u l l d o z e r t r e n c h e s a r e l o c a t e d on t h e W # l m i n e r a l c la im. The workings t o t h e west o f t h e main road l i e on a f l a t - t o p p e d p o r t i o n o f Cranbe r ry Ridge , w h i l e t h o s e t o t h e e a s t o f t h e road , i n c l u d i n g s e v e r a l l a r g e t r e n c h e s and an a d i t , l i e on t h e upper e a s t e r n f l a n k o f C r a n b e r r y Ridge which s l o p e s down t o t h e West K e t t l e R i v e r V a l l e y a t a c o n s i s t e n t 15 degrees . N a t u r a l o u t c r o p p i n g s a r e s c a r c e b o t h on t h e t o p o f t h e r i d g e and on t h e e a s t e r n s l o p e due t o a mant le o f g l a c i a l t i l l e s t i m a t e d t o be 1 t o 2 m e t r e s deep.

CLIMATE

The r e g i o n r e c e i v e s 50 cm o f p r e c i p i t a t i o n a n n u a l l y - h a l f o f i t i n t h e form o f w i n t e r snow. The w i n t e r snow pack o f 1 t o 13 m e t r e s b e g i n s t o accumula te i n November and l i n g e r s i n shaded areas u n t i l mid-I4ay. The w i n t e r s i n t h e B e a v e r d e l l a r e a a r e moderate and t h e summers a r e c o o l e r t h a n t h o s e o f t h e h o t Okanagan V a l l e y l y i n g j u s t 40 k i l o m e t r e s t o t h e west.

I M STATUS

The p r o p e r t y c o n s i s t s o f 2, four -pos t c l a i m s o f 1 u n i t each. The W l was s t a k e d J u l y 13, 1978, wh i l e t h e W2 was s t a k e d J u l y 21, 1978. Both m i n e r a l c l a i m s were r e c o r d e d on J u l y 27, 1978, and t h e y a r e 100% owned by t h e w r i t e r , 14. Morr i son , o f Kelowna, B.C. The c l a i m s are l o c a t e d w i t h i n t h e Greenwood Mining D i v i s i o n , and t h e y have been g iven r e c o r d numbers 1226 and 1227 r e s p e c t i v e l y . I t s h o u l d be no ted t h a t t h e t h r e e Crown Grant m i n e r a l c l a i m s (L3074s, 3075s and 3076s) shown on F i g u r e 2 may o v e r l a p t h e e a s t e r n p o r t i o n o f t h e W2 m i n e r a l c l a i m by as much as 100 metres.

Mining e x p l o r a t i o n i n t h e B e a v e r d e l l r e g i o n began i n t h e l a t e 18801s, and p r o d u c t i o n o f s i l v e r from t h e B e a v e r d e l l Camp d a t e s back t o 1900 ( C h r i s t o p h e r , 1975). Most e x p l o r a t i o n a c t i v i t y t o o k p l a c e on t h e east s i d e o f t h e West K e t t l e R i v e r V a l l e y where t h e f o c u s was on t h e v e i n s y s t e m s o f Wal lace Mountain p r e s e n t l y b e i n g mined by t h e Highland B e l l Mine, p l o r a t i o n was n o t commenced on C r a n b e r r y Ridge u n t i l t h e 1920's. The I n y o and Ackworth c la ims made up t h e main p r o p e r t y on Cran- b e r r y Ridge i n t h e 1920's. and t h e geo logy o f t h e s e h i s t o r i c c l a i m s a r e g i v e n i n t h e Min- i s t e r o f Mines Annual R e p o r t s f o r 1923 and 1925. The W p r o p e r t y now c o v e r s t h e o l d Inyo and Ackworth workings. The work ings a r e l a r g e l y i n a c c e s s i b l e so t h e 1923 and 1925 r e p o r t s a r e r e p r o d u c e d

I t seems p r o b a b l e t h a t t h e two v e i n s will j o i n a t a depth .

The Inyo-Ackworth showings were s t a k e d on s e v e r a l o c c a s i o n s f o l l o w i n g 1966, b u t t h e ground was open f o r - s t a k i n g i n 1978 when t h e w r i t e r s taked t h e w' 1&2 m i n e r a l c l a i m s o v e r t h e workings. Work on t h e W1&2 m i n e r a l c l a i m s s i n c e 1978 h a s i n c l u d e d g e o l o g i c a l mapping (Mor r i son , 1979), a VLF-EM ground s u r v e y (Morr i son , 19841, and b iogeochemica l s u r v e y s (b jo r r i son , 1986, 1987)

REGIONAL GEOLOGY

The Inyo-Ackworth s h e a r zone, t r e n d i n g s o u t h - w e s t e r l y a c r o s s t h e W 1&2 m i n e r a l c l a i m s , conforms i n d i r e c t i o n w i t h t h e main o r e zones on Wallace Mountain a c r o s s t h e v a l l e y , and i s p robab ly t e c t o n i c a l l y r e l a t e d . The o r e m i n e r a l s o f t h e Inyo-Ackworth s h e a r zone a r e v e r y l i k e l y d e r i v e d from l a t e s o l u t i o n s emanat ing from t h e B e a v e r d e l l S tock .

P R O P E R T Y GEOLOGY

The geology o f t h e W p r o p e r t y a p p e a r s t o be f a i r l y s imple . N a t u r a l o u t c r o p p i n g s on t h e p r o p e r t y a r e few, b u t i t seems t h a t t h e e n t i r e p r o p e r t y i s u n d e r l a i n by mass ive , f r e s h , w h i t e g r a n o d i o r i t e o f t h e Westkett le B a t h o l i t h (Ne l son) . The g r a n o d i o r i t e i s c u t by a s t r o n g s h e a r zone, and i t i s a l o n g t h i s s h e a r zone t h a t t h e r o c k h a s been exposed by s e v e r a l o l d workings and t r e n c h e s d a t i n g back t o t h e Inyo- Ackworth m i n e r a l c l a i m s o f t h e 19201s. The f r e s h whi t e gran- o d i o r i t e becomes more f r a c t u r e d and c h l o r i t e a l t e r e d towards t h e s h e a r zones.

Vuggy q u a r t z v e i n s (5 t o 50 cm i n w i d t h ) w i t h p y r i t e , g a l e n a and s p h a l e r i t e m i n e r a l i z a t i o n f i l l t h e s h e a r zone l o c a l l y . ( A d e t a i l e d a c c o u n t o f t h e underground geology i s g i v e n i n t h e B.C. M i n i s t e r o f Mines Annual R e p o r t s f o r 1923 and 1925, which have been d u p l i c a t e d under t h e H i s t o r y h e a d i n g o f t h i s r e p o r t )

The s h e a r zone a v e r a g i n g 2 metres i n w i d t h i s d e f i n e d by r u s - t y f a u l t gouge, vuggy q u a r t z , and manganese s t a i n i n g , Saus- s u r i t i z e d g r a n o d i o r i t e w i t h i n t h e s h e a r zone l o o k s l i k e a q u a r t z porphyry , b e i n g made up o f 25% q u a r t z c r y s t a l s ( 2 t o 4 mm), and c o n t a i n i n g 3% d i s s e m i n a t e d p y r i t e i n 1 t o 2 mm cubes.

The shea r zone s t r i k e s a t 80 degrees, and i t i s exposed o v e r a l e n g t h o f 300 metres by t h e o l d workings.

Some o f t h e o l d e r l i t e r a t u r e on t h e p r o p e r t y makes r e f e r e n c e t o m i n e r a l zoning, I t h a s been no ted t h a t s i l v e r v a l u e s a r e a s s o c i a t e d w i t h good g a l e n a m i n e r a l i z a t i o n n e a r s u r f a c e , while g o l d v a l u e s are a s s o c i a t e d w i t h s p h a l e r i t e samples from dep th ,

GROUND MAGNETOMETER SURVEY

A t o t a l o f 9 g r i d l i n e s o f 500 met res l e n g t h were e s t a b l i s h e d i n a no r th - sou th d i r e c t i o n a t 100 met re i n t e r v a l s a c r o s s t h e W 1 8 2 m i n e r a l c l a i m s as i l l u s t r a t e d on Map W-89-1 accompanying t h i s r e p o r t . The s o u t h e r n b o r d e r s o f t h e m i n e r a l c l a i m s were used as a b a s e l i n e . S t a t i o n s were marked a t e v e r y 25 me t re measure a l o n g each o f t h e f l a g g e d g r i d l i n e s . A S i l v a Ranger compass and a T o p o l i t e b e l t c h a i n were used t o l a y o u t t h e g r i d d u r i n g t h e c o u r s e of magnetometer survey . The L e g a l Corner P o s t s were a l s o t i e d - i n t o t h e g r i d .

A S c i n t r e x MF-2 P o r t a b l e F l u x g a t e Magnetometer was used t o s u r v e y t h e p r o p e r t y , The magnetometer w i t h a r e s o l u t i o n o f 5 gammas was c o n s i d e r e d s u i t a b l e f o r t h i s p r o p e r t y ,

B a s e l i n e s t a t i o n v a l u e s were e s t a b l i s h e d by making a double t r a v - e r s e a l o n g t h e b a s e l i n e on a day o f s l i g h t d i u r n a l v a r i a t i o n , The b a s e l i n e s t a t i o n s were c o r r e c t e d f o r diur.na1 v a r i a t i o n s , and t h e c o r r e c t e d v a l u e s were used d u r i n g t h e su rvey .

Looped t r a v e r s e s were made a l o n g p a i r s o f g r i d l i n e s , s t a r t i n g and e n d i n g a t b a s e l i n e s t a t i o n s ( u s u a l l y w i t h i n 13 t o 23 h o u r s ) , and c o r r e c t i o n s were made t o all v a l u e s f o r d i u r n a l v a r i a t i o n . Dur ing t h i s y e a r ' s s u r v e y i n t e r m e d i a t e r e a d i n g s were t a k e n midway between a l l f l a g g e d g r i d s t a t i o n s i n a d d i t i o n t o t h e g r i d s t a t i o n r e a d i n g s t o i n c r e a s e t h e d e t a i l o f t h e survey . A l l o f t h e c o r r e c t - ed r e a d i n g s are p l o t t e d on t h e con toured magnetometer Map W-89-1 accompanying t h i s r e p o r t . A c o n s t a n t 50,000 gammas h a s been sub- t r a c t e d from a l l o f t h e v a l u e s on t h e map f o r e a s e o f p l o t t i n g and c l a r i t y ,

The ground magnetometer s u r v e y was s e l e c t e d as a n e x p l o r a t i o n t e c h n i q u e f o r t h e W 1&2 m i n e r a l c l a i m s w i t h t h e hope t h a t some d i s t i n c t i v e magnet ic f e a t u r e s u c h as a l i n e a r magnet ic h i g h , o r low, might mark t h e t r a c e o f t h e Inyo-Ackworth s h e a r zone a c r o s s t h e p r o p e r t y , cou ld be i d e n t i f i e d on t h e W 1 m i n e r a l c l a im where t h e Inyo- Ackworth s h e a r zone i s exposed, t h e n t h e same f e a t u r e might p r o j e c t o n t o t h e W 2 m i n e r a l c la im t o t h e e a s t where t h e t i l l cove r h a s hampered a l l o t h e r e x p l o r a t i o n e f f o r t s . ( I n t h e o r y , a l a t e a n d e s i t e dyke, i n - f i l l i n g t h e s h e a r zone would produce a l i n e a r magnet ic h i g h , whereas a magnet ic low would be pro- duced by t h e d e s t r u c t i o n o f m a g n e t i t e i n t h e s h e a r e d granodio- r i t e d u r i n g t h e m i n e r a l i z i n g process).

I t was c o n s i d e r e d t h a t i f s u c h a f e a t u r e

I n a n a l y z i n g t h e data on Xap W-89-1 i t i s a p p a r e n t t h a t t h e r e i s v e r y l i t t l e magnet ic r e l i e f w i t h i n t h e s u r v e y a r e a , A l l o f t h e v a l u e s f a l l w i t h i n a r ange o f 900 gammas. A d i s t i n c t d i f - f e r e n c e o c c u r s between t h e wes te rn and e a s t e r n h a l v e s o f t h e p r o p e r t y . Nany o f t h e v a l u e s on t h e W 1 m i n e r a l c l a im, where bedrock i s n e a r s u r f a c e , are i n e x c e s s o f 500 gammas, w h i l e v a l u e s on t h e W 2 m i n e r a l c l a i m , where t h e t i l l i s b e l i e v e d t o be 3 o r more m e t r e s deep , a r e g e n e r a l l y l e s s t h a n 500 gammas. I n f a c t , an examina t ion o f t h e p r o p e r t y p roves t h a t much o f t h e c o n t o u r d e t a i l on Map W-89-1 b e a r s more r e l a t i o n s h i p t o t h e d e p t h o f t h e g l a c i a l t i l l t h a n i t does t o t h e bedrock geology. Fo r i n s t a n c e , on l i n e 29E, s h a l l o w , i n - f i l l e d , r a v i n e s were no ted t o have p a r t i c u l a r l y low magnet ic v a l u e s (24+12N, 270 gammas and 25+00N, 210 gammas), On t h e o t h e r hand, exposed r i d g e s o f g r a n o d i o r i t e o r hornblende d i o r i t e y i e l d e d t h e high- e s t magnet ic v a l u e s o f t h e s u r v e y (L24E, 21+62N a t 1010 gammas and L23E, 23+12N a t 760 gammas) . The most i n t e r e s t i n g data, a l t h o u g h s u b t l e , i s t h e b r e a k i n t h e 500 gamma c o n t o u r a c r o s s t h e c e n t r e o f t h e W 1 m i n e r a l c l a i m t h a t c o i n c i d e s w i t h t h e t r a c e o f t h e Inyo-Ackworth s h e a r zone.

U n f o r t u n a t e l y , t h i s weak magnet ic low cannot be t r a c e d no r th - eas tward o n t o t h e W 2 m i n e r a l c l a im f o r any d i s t a n c e w i t h any c o n f i d e n c e , and t h e main purpose o f t h e s u r v e y was n o t ach ieved .

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDAT1 ONS

The r e s u l t s o f t h e ground magnetometer s u r v e y c a r r i e d o u t on t h e W 1&2 m i n e r a l c l a i m s d u r i n g J u l y t h i s y e a r i n d i c a t e a s u b t l e magnet ic "low" c o i n c i d e n t w i t h t h e mapped workings o f t he o l d Inyo-Ackworth s h e a r zone on t h e W 1 m i n e r a l c la im. The s u r v e y , however, d i d n o t prove u s e f u l i n t r a c i n g t h e s h e a r zone a c r o s s t h e t i l l - c o v e r e d W 2 m i n e r a l c l a im l y i n g t o t h e e a s t .

The W 1&2 m i n e r a l c l a i m s have been s u b j e c t e d t o s e v e r a l s u r v e y s i n r e c e n t y e a r s ( s e e R e f e r e n c e s ) . conducted t h e b iogeochemica l s u r v e y s o f 1986 & 1987 Proved t o be

t h e b e s t a t o u t l i n i n g t h e Inyo-Ackworth s h e a r zone across t h e W 1 m i n e r a l c la im. I t i s t h e r e f o r e , recommended t h a t biogeochem- i c a l coverage be ex tended a c r o s s t h e W2 m i n e r a l c l a im u s i n g t h e

same p r o c e d u r e s as t h o s e used d u r i n g t h e e a r l i e r su rveys .
