Introduction: “Gone in 60 Seconds” (2000)•American action film from the year 2000, a

remake of the film from 1974.•Starring Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie,

Giovanni Ribisi, Christopher Eccleston, Robert Duvall, Vinnie Jones, and Will Patton.

•Directed by Dominic Sena, written by Scott Rosenberg, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

•The movie was shot in Canada in Hamilton, Ontario, and in the United States in Long Beach and Los Angeles, California. [2]

Aim of the Project

•This is an interdisciplinary project between Algebra and Physics.

•The purpose is to find a jump scene from a movie, analyze it, and prove whether it could be done or whether it was a result of camera trickery.

Page 6: Gone in 60 seconds sofia

Hypothesis

•Fake…•In my opinion, the jump looks absolutely

fake and computerized because you can see it looks like a 3D computer animation.

•At first, the car seems to be going straight with no angle since take-off, considering the angle of the ramp.

•Also, when it lands, the car is basically intact…

Variables• Car: 1967 Shelby Mustang GT 500• Location of scene: Vincent Thomas Bridge, Los

Angeles, California• Initial velocity: 95mi/h or 42.5 meters per second• Height of ramp: 13ft 6in [6]

• Ramp angle: 70°• Distance travelled: 118.5 meters

▫ At first, I calculated the distance based on the beams of the bridge and the length of the car and got 115 meters.

• Mass: 1860 kg [1]

Procedure

•The first step was to choose the jump to do the project about and I chose “Gone in 60 Seconds”.

•Then, I started gathering information about the jump; the speed of the car, the angle of the ramp, etc.

•After that, I viewed many times the video to be able to find the height of the jump and the other information that was left.

Page 12: Gone in 60 seconds sofia

Data Calculations

•Speed of the car: 95mph or 42.5 meters per sec. (in the video)

•Distance of the jump: ▫42.52sin270°/9.8 = 118.6 meters

•Maximum height reached:▫42.52sin70°2 /9.8*2 = 81.375 meters

Page 13: Gone in 60 seconds sofia

Data Calculations• Acceleration: change in velocity / time taken

▫95mph / 8sec.=11.875m/h2

• Mass: 80kg (average man) + 1780kg (weight of car)=1860kg

• Force: mass*acceleration▫1860kg*11.875m/s2=22087.5 N

• Horizontal Motion (Range): 118.5 meters• Vertical Motion (Height): 81.375 meters

Conclusion•The jump is fake.•My hypothesis was supported by the data

when it says that the angle is too steep for the car to have jumped so low from the ground.

•“The car jump at the end, while extreme, would work if done with a 15 degree ramp at 100mph.”[5]

• If the ramp were less steep and the speed greater, the car would have been able to make the jump, although the distance is too long.

Page 17: Gone in 60 seconds sofia

Calculations: 15° ramp

•Speed of the car: 95mph or 42.5 meters per sec. (in the video)

•Distance of the jump: ▫42.52sin215°/9.8 = 105.5 meters

•Maximum height reached:▫42.52sin15°2 /9.8*2 = 90 meters

Page 18: Gone in 60 seconds sofia

Evaluation•Many errors could have occurred

calculating the data.•Some of the numbers are estimates that

were not shown in the video, for example, the angle of the ramp, the maximum height reached, and the distance travelled.

•Since the video is in slow-motion, it is hard to tell how much time it took from when it took off until it landed, which could have altered my results.
