These were important to attract people to our piping competitions. Thisencouraged new people to take up the art, but also encouraged competitors to improvetheirpipingstandards.Competitionhasbeenafoundationofpipingforcenturiesand it isimportantthatwefindanewoutlet.Ihavetravelledmuchinthelastcoupleofmonthsandmost events I have been judging at were indoor solo competitions. These are easy toorganiseandinexpensivetorun.Itisgreattoseesomanydoingwell,incomparisontothetraditionalhighlandgatheringstyleofevent.Theonlydownsideseemstobethefactthattheaudienceismadeupalmostexclusivelyofpipers.

AustralianSoloPipingChampionships2019All arrangements seem to have been made to prepare for the Australian Solo PipingChampionship,whichwillbeheldinconjunctionwiththeRUBrownPiobaireachdSociety’sGoldmedal competition. Saturday the 13th of April 2019will see the first of the eventsbeingheld.ThiswillbetheRUBrownClaspfor formerwinnersoftheGoldMedalevent.Thiswillcommenceat1:00PMatScotchCollegeAdelaideinthedrawingroom.Thiseventalways attracts a large audience to hear the absolute cream of Piping from around thecountry and beyond. A recital will be held on the evening and this will prove to be asignificant event with top international performers, including Rab Wallace and JamesMurray.

RobertWallacewillbetheguestjudgefortheweekendThechampionshipswillbeabiennialeventheldintheyearswhenanAustralianPipeBandChampionship is not being conducted. Sponsors for this year’s event will be McCallumBagpipes, whowill supply a Prize Bagpipe for C and D Grades and an engraved PracticeChanterinBgrade.TheaggregateAgradewinnerwillbepresentedwithanengravedandmountedquaich.Thiscomingeventwillnotincludepiobaireachd,whichwillbeconductedatthesameeventbytheRUBrownPiobaireachdSociety,whowillbepromotingtheevent.

Scotland’sRobertWallacewillheadtheadjudicationpanelforthe2019AustralianSoloPipingChampionshipsforlightmusicinAprilinconjunctionwiththenation’spremierandmostprestigiouspiobaireachdcompetitionconductedbytheRUBrownSociety.JoiningRobertasanadjudicatorinthelightmusicsectionsareNatRussellGCOAM,AtholChalmers,JuneMcLeishandGarryBarker.Inthepiobaireachdevents,RobertwillbejoinedbyBrettTidswell,MalcolmMcRae,BarreyNiven,Sam,YoungandDennisBrowning.ThechampionshipweekendisbeingpresentedbyPipeBandsSouthAustraliaandtheRUBrownSocietyinAdelaideon13and14April.Robertisregardedasoneoftheworld’sleadingsolobagpipeadjudicatorsandeducatorsandanotedauthorityonceolmor.DuringhiscompetingcareerheenjoyedconsiderablesuccesswinningbothGoldMedals,theGoldClasp,theBratachGorm,theGilliesCup,theDunveganMedalandClaspandmanyotherimportantpiobaireachdprizes.InlightmusichealsoexcelledwinningtheFormerWinnersMSRattheArgyllshireGatheringin1985andmanyotherawards.

Heisrenownedasateacherandhisstudentsregularlyfeatureinthetopprizelists.HehasproducedhisownTutorBooks1-3,thethirdsolelyconcernedwithceolmor.Hewastheproducerandjointeditor(withNormanMatheson)ofthe'MastersofPiobaireachd'seriesoftenCDsdocumentingtheplayingandteachingofthe'BobsofBalmoral',RUBrownandRBNicol.Thisteachingseriesspawnedmanysimilar,includingthatofP/MDonaldMacLeodandothers.RobertWallaceisajournalistbyprofessionandiseditorofthepopularPipingPresswebmagazine.Forfifteenyears,1999-2014hewasPrincipalofthenow-defunctCollegeofPipingandoversawtherebuildingoftheCollege’spremisesinGlasgow,Scotland,aswellasrevisingandre-writingalloftheirtutorbooksandmanyotherpublications.DuringthistimehealsoeditedthePipingTimesmagazinewhich,in2005,wasHighlyCommendedintheScottishMagazineAwards.RobertiscurrentlyVice-PresidentofthePiobaireachdSocietyandamemberoftheSociety’sinfluentialMusicCommittee.TheRUBrownPiobaireachdSocietyeventswillbeconductedasusualwiththeAustralianSolo Piping Championships forming a part of theweekends piping activities. Grade4PipeBandsinAustraliaGrade4isoneofthemostimportantGradesforPipeBandsaroundtheworldasitisoftenthetraininggroundforfuturepipersanddrummers.ManyofouryoungstersstartinGrade4bandsanditisessentialthatweofferthemamotivating,yetfairsystemunderwhichtocompete.InrecentyearstheAustralianPipeBandCollegehashadanumberofdecisionsthatitmadeaboutthemusictobeperformedbyGrade4bandsincompetitionoverturnedbytheballotstobands.MostofthebandsvotingareGrade4andtheyhaveselectedeverincreasinglevelsofdifficultytothepointwhereGrade4inAustralianowcomparestoGrade4AinScotlandinMSRplayingrequirements,whereasthemajorityofourbandsareofaGrade4Bstandard.Thecomplaintfromsomebandsisthattheycannotmanagetherequirementsandpulloutofcompetitionaltogether.Anumberofbrancheshavealsoraisedthisissueandatrialruletoallowtheselectionofmarchestobeprovidedasaneventforthesebandsisinuseinvariousjurisdictions.

AlthoughthedesireseemstobetosupporttheupperlevelGrade4bandswantingtocompeteinScotlandandotheroverseascountries,obviouslyourconcernhastobethatwedonotdiminishGrade4asourdevelopmentgroundforthefutureplayersofthiscountry,andalsodonotlosecompetitionsduetoalackofcompetingbands.Grade4bandsformthemajorityofbandsineverystateandsomestatesarealmostentirelypopulatedbyGrade4bands.ThemusicalrequirementsselectedforGrade4bandstoplaymustbeofachievablebutalsosetalevelofchallenge.Oneoptionistodividethegradeinto4Aand4B,whichwillsolvetheissueofdisparitybetweenbandstandards.Thosestatesthathavealowerstandardwillobviouslynothavea4Acompetitionandtheissueshouldbesolvedwithoutturningmostcompetitionsintoeventswithminimalbandsspreadacrossawiderangeofgrades.

CityofHobartPipeBandatRichmondTherecentRichmondcompetitioninTasmaniawasaperfectexampleofwhereallbandswouldhavebeenbettersuitedtoGrade4Brequirements.OnebandinparticularisgoingtoScotlandtocompeteinthatGrade.TheeventsincludedanMSR,amedley,ashortcoursequickstepandanon-competitiveperformance.Overallthebandspresentedwithagoodsoundandthefeaturesthatseparatedthebandswereinaccuracyofplayingandnumberoferrors.AlwayscommonfeaturesamongGrade4competitions.DrumcorpsvariedmorethanthestandardofPipecorpsandinmostcasesthisdecidedthecompetition.Thepointis,thatalovelyvenue,awidevarietyofeventsandwellpresentedbandsmadeforaverypleasantday.Watchinghandsaroundthecirclesshowedquiteafewpipersnotcapableofperformingthebasicsthroughouttheselectedelements.Simplerrequirementswouldhelpaddressthis.Bandswishingtoextendthemselvescanplayupinto4A.Wehopethatthesuggestionofagrade4Bwithasimplerrepertoirewillgivemorebandstheopportunitytocompeteandthosebandsthatcurrentlystrugglewillhavemoreofachancetofocusonthebasics.

AustralianPipeBandCollegeCertificatesTheAustralianPipeBandCollegehasawell-establishedsyllabusofinternationallyrecognisedcertificates.TheyarebasedupontheRSPBAStructuredLearningbooks,whicharefreelyavailablefordownload.Thecertificatesgivelearnersagoaltoaimforandastheplayerdevelops,thegoalsbecomemoresignificant.Atthisstageyoucansitthepreliminary,Elementary,IntermediateandAdvancedExaminations.ItiscurrentlyfeltthatsomesmallstagesbeforePreliminarymaybeagoodideaaswellasasub-intermediatestagetolessenthegapbetweenElementaryandintermediate.

PBAAdvancedCertificateAftercompletingtheIntermediateCertificate,itispossibletoregisterwithabandasatutorandproceedtowardstheTeachingDiploma.Thisisagoodqualificationtoholdandthepreparationcertainlyhelpstounderstandastructuredmethodologyofteaching.FollowingcompletionoftheAdvancedCertificateitispossibletothenproceedontotheMusicAdjudicatorsTheoryExaminationandundertakeamentoringprogramtogaintheAdjudicator’squalification.Thepreparationfortheexaminationswillhelptheupandcomingplayerlearnmusictheory.Timesignatures,notevalues,tunestructureandexpressionarethefoundationofourmusicalpresentation.Tobeabletowritemusicwellmeansyoucancommunicatewith

othermusicians.Keysignatures,chordsandharmonicstructureensurethattheupandcomingplayercanwritecorrectharmony,assembletunecombinationwithcorrectkeyprogressionsandoverallensurethatthemusicalabilitiesoftheplayerimproveinunderstanding.Thismaynotbenoticeableinmanycasestothenovice,buttothosewhounderstandtheory,weoftenheargapingflawsintheconstructionofharmony,tuneprogressionandquiteoftenrhythmandtunestructure.Mostbrancheswillholdregularexaminations,andinmanycaseswillalsoconductapre-examinationcoursetofamiliarisethecandidateswiththeexaminationrequirements.ItcomesasnosurprisethatthemostsuccessfulPipeMajorsandplayersinthecountryholdtheirPBAcertificatesandinmanycasesoverseasqualificationsaswell.Itisanintegralpartofagoodteachingprogramandofcoursesomethingtheinquisitivedevelopingplayershouldwanttoundertake.Formanywhoareemployedaspipersorinstructors,eitherfulltimeorparttime,thisisagreatwaytoadvanceyourcareerandestablishcredibility.ExaminationscamebearrangedbycontactingyourlocalVicePrincipalthroughyourBranchofPipeBandsAustralia.

Theexperiencedsitinthecornerandgenerallykeeptheirmouthsshut,asacritiqueisunwanted.Buttheplayerhasgenerallysetthemselfbackbothtechnicallyandintermsofcredibilityamongtheverypeopletheyaretryingtoimpress.

Onanotherlevel,weseemanypiperswhocometousfortuitionwhohavebeenpushedtoplayinabandatastagewhereitisfartooearlyforthem.Theyhavetoplaymusicthatisbeyondtheircapabilitiesataspeedtheycannotmanageandinmanycaseswithouthavingtheirplayingproperlyanalysed.Manyofthesepeoplespendyearstryingtoundothedamagedone.

HowtoGetaBandtoStrikeUpinTune Evenatthehighestoflevels,itisobvioustousasadjudicatorsthatsomebandsstrikeupwithacrackingintroductoryEandstartintune,whileotherbandshaveamuddysoundforthefewpartortwoofmusicbeforecomingintotune.Thecauseofthiscanbeanumberofissues.Thefirstoneisbag,moisturecontrolsystemandreedsetup.Somebagsandmoisturecontrolsystemsrunatquiteahightemperatureinternally.Thedryingagentwhenabsorbingmoisturegetsquitehotandifyoufeeltheoutsideofthecanisteritisactuallyquitehotwhileplaying.Whenyoustopthiscoolsdown,everythingchangesanditdoesnotreturntotunedtemperatureuntilsomepartsofthefirsttunearecomplete.

TuningattheWorldPipeBandChampionshipsWhentryinganewsetup,Iplayforaperiodoftime,say20–30minutes,putmyinstrumentdownfor3-5minutesandthentimehowlongittakestocomebackintotunewhenIstartplayingagain.Thiswilltellyouifthesystemyouareplayingdropsawayquicklyandtakessometimetoreturntotune.Somesetupsactuallychangeanddon’treturntothesametuning.Stabilityisthekey.Theotherproblemcanbetemperatureorenvironment.Ifyoutunethebandintheshadeandyouaregoingtobeplayinginthesun,itisagoodideatointroducethebandtothesunduringthetuningprocess.Thesameoccurswithextremecold.Tryandgettheinstrumentsaswarmasyoucanandkeepthematthattemperatureifyoucan.

Theenvironmentinwhichyoutunecanalsomakeadifference.Playingonahotasphaltsurfacewhenyouhavetocompeteongrass,orplayingonwetsoggygrasstotunecanallmakeadifference.Alsoensurethatallpiperstune,evenbeforecomingintothecircleunderthesameconditions.Whenmovingfromfine-tuningtothecontestline,itisgoodpracticetokeepblowingwarmairthroughtheinstrument.Itthedayiscool,itisalsoagoodideatokeepholdingthechanterandensureitremainswarm.Thekeyfeaturesthereforeare:

Remembering1918

PipeMajorWilliamMacLean

WilliamMacLean was born in 1876 into a Raasay family. He was related to the famousMacKaypipersofthat Island. HewastaughtbyMalcolmMacPherson(CalumPiobaire)atCatlodge,BadenochatthesametimeasJohnMacDonald(Inverness)andalongsideCalum’ssonAngus.

MacLeanservedwith the3/4thReserveBattalionCameronHighlandersat thestartof theGreatWar and was later posted as PipeMajor of the 5th (Lochiel’s) Battalion where heserveduntiltheendofthewar.The5thBattalionCameronHighlanderswerethefirstBritishBattaliontoenterGermanyandthePipeBandledtheBattalionintoCologneplayingthe6/8March,“ThePiobaireachdofDonaldDubh”.

MacLeanwasoneofthefinestPiobaireachdplayersofhisdayandhadwontheGoldmedalattheNorthernMeetingin1901andattheArgyllshireGatheringin1912.Healsowontheclasp in 1913. During his time in France MacLean was known for carting around ablackboardsothathecouldproperlyteachhispiperswithmusicandnotbyear.

MacLeanwasafinecomposerandwrotesuchtunesas;“TheBraesofBadenoch”,“BessieMacIntyre”, “Duart Castle”, “WillieGray”andmanymore.MacLeanwas recorded by theSchoolofScottishStudieswhenhewas77.Hepassedawayin1957aged80yearsofage.

TheBattleofArras.TheBattleatArrasstartedonthe9thApril1917.Itwasprecededbyafour-daybombardmentandlasteduntil the16thMay. The intentionwastodrawGermantroopsawayfromtheFrenchLinessothatamajoroffensivecouldstartthereaweeklater.ArrassawthegreatestconcentrationofScottishTroopsthananyothersetpieceBattleoftheWar.Onethirdofthe159,000casualtiesweresufferedbytheScottishBattalions.
