Faith Formation Registration 2018-2019 for grades Pre-K –12 It is necessary for families to register each year. Registration forms will be handed out to youth during Faith Formation Sessions on May 6th and

will also be available on the Welcome Table in the Gathering Area.

Early registration helps in planning and keeps the cost down for the parish by ordering books early.

Please remember-if your child was not baptized at Good Shepherd Church, a copy of their baptismal certificate needs to accompany their registration form.

If you have any questions, contact Trish in the Office of Faith Formation, 910-425-5617. Please Register Early!

PARENTS YOUR VOTE IS NEEDED

LAST DATE TO VOTE IS THIS SUNDAY, MAY 6TH! In response to concerns regarding the time of Sunday evening classes, parents were asked to take part in a poll that could change the time of evening classes to 12:45 – 2:00pm (following the 11:30 Mass) rather than making an additional evening trip back to campus from 6:00–7:30pm

E-mails were sent during the second and fourth weeks of April to parents who have children registered in Faith Formation asking them to respond YES or NO to this change by Sunday, May 6th. If voted for, this change would take place beginning September 2018. As stated in the email, reasons for this time change was to provide quality family time on Sunday evening and alleviate additional evening trips back to the church campus. Thank you, we are waiting to hear from you!

PARISH INFORMATION

NEW PARISHIONERS

Welcome to our Community!

We invite you to register at the Church Office during office hours, pick up a Welcome Packet on the Welcome Table in the Gathering Area or online at: www.good-shepherd-church.org. Though a rather simple act, registration is a sign of one’s commitment and responsibility to the parish and allows the parish to know how many families live in the parish. It also provides an official record of your Active membership and is essential for participation in parish programs and sacraments. What is an Active Membership: three points determine active membership: • Registration in the parish for a sufficient period of

time and use of the envelope system in support of the parish;

• Faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days;

• Volunteer and participate in Parish activities with time, talent, and treasure as means permit.

Please note the Facilities and Services of Good Shepherd Church are available to active members. Emergencies: In cases of emergency, please contact the Parish Office during regular business hours. After hours, please call Deacon Pat at (910) 818-0801. SACRAMENTS Anointing of the Sick: Call the Church Office (910) 425-1590. Marriage: Couples are asked not to set a date for their wedding until an initial meeting with the Pastor or Deacon. Diocesan requirements mandate a minimum six-month period of preparation. Baptism: Parental participation in a program to prepare parents is required. Contact Trisha Martin-Kamionka, 910-425-5617, in the Faith Formation Office at least 3 months in advance of your desired baptismal date to make the proper arrangements.

Sick and Homebound/Hospitalized: Please notify the Parish Office when someone is ill and unable to attend Mass for any significant length of time and would like to receive Holy Communion. Bulletin Deadline: Requests are due by 12 noon on the Monday prior to the weekend the announcement is to be published. E-mail your request to: [email protected]. May Crowning:

May Crowning is a tradition in our church in which an image or likeness of the Blessed Virgin Mary is ceremonially crowned to signify her as Queen of Heaven and the Mother of God. Since medieval times, we have had the combination between Mary and the month of May. Among the earliest witnesses was Alphonsus X, King of Castille, Spain (1221-1284). Later, especially in the United States, prior to Vatican II, the whole month of May became the month of Mary. During this time special devotions to Mary were organized for each day of May. Although this custom originated in Italy, it spread widely during the nineteenth century. To show our love and dedication for our Loving Mother, Mary, we will Honor her with a May Crowning at the Grotto, next Sunday, May 13th, following the 11:30am Mass.

Mother’s Day envelope in your May mailing This envelope is for our Mother’s Day Novena that will be held for nine days beginning on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13th through Monday, May 21st. Please add names of Mothers that are living or have passed away on or in the envelope. All Mothers will be prayed for at all Masses during these nine days. Additional envelopes are available on the Welcome Table.

Please return envelopes in the collection or the basket on the Welcome Table by this Sunday, May 6.

May is the month of Mary In her honor, the Knights of Columbus will recite the Rosary each Sunday in May at 10:45 am in the Church. Come out and join them to HONOR OUR MOTHER IN HEAVEN.

Need a Rosary? Please pick one up from the basket on the Welcome Table.

Good Shepherd has Spiritually Adopted two babies, a male and female in danger of abortion. Adoptive Babies Name: Female: Mary Male: Joseph

Spiritual Adoption prayer for your unborn baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of [baby’s name] the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.

Week Twelve: Spirituality Adopted Baby Instead of air, my Mom’s womb is filled with a watery liquid called amniotic fluid, which I can breath in and out, which helps to strengthen my lungs. But I get oxygen through my umbilical cord,

which is attached to me where my belly button will be! For more on your Spiritually Adopted Baby visit: https://iprayforlife.wordpress.com/spiritual-adoption- of-the-unborn-child/

Dedicate the Sanctuary Lamp

The red Sanctuary Lamp by the tabernacle burns to remind us of the sacramental presence of Jesus Christ. It is a mark of honor to remind the faithful of the presence of Christ, and is a profession of their love and affection.

If you wish to have the Sanctuary Lamp burning in memory or honor of a loved one, to honor a special occasion, or a special intention, make arrangements with the parish Office, Janice Scott or Maria Rosario, 425-1590. The cost of the candle is $20.00. It will burn for three weeks, and the memorial will be published in the Bulletin.

We will begin the Dedication of the Sanctuary Lamp on Mother’s Day, May 13th.

We express our heartfelt prayers and condolences to Michaelyn Strepay on the loss of Magdeline B. Strepay.

We express our heartfelt prayers and condolences to Becky Bryant on the loss of past parishioner Louis Bryant who passed away on April 15, 2018.

May the souls of Magdeline and Louis rest in eternal peace of the risen Lord.

Vocations Chalice This weekend, Jolinda Swartout will take the Vocations Chalice home. She will place the Chalice on her table and pray the Vocations Prayer with the Chalice every day and return it next weekend. Please help pray the Vocations

Prayer that is prayed with the Chalice below.

The Prayer for Vocations: Heavenly Father, Bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers and sisters. Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that their lives require. Help those who have embraced the consecrated life to live up to their promises. Form us all in the likeness of your Son so that in Him, with Him and through Him we may love you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere. With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Would your family like a chance to take the Vocations Chalice home for a week? A sign-up sheet is available on the Welcome Table.

I wonder what that collection’s for?” There are several parish/community-centered 2nd collection envelopes members of the parish will see almost every month, i.e., 1/2 Can a Day/San Isidore Property Debt, Share Sunday, and Parish Capital Improvements. Have you ever wondered what they are for or how the money is distributed? Here is a brief explanation of how the parish allocates these donations. 1/2 Can a Day/San Isidore Property Debt is a once-a-month collection that helps pay the non-interest bearing mortgage payments for the land purchased by Good Shepherd for San Isidore’s new church as part of our daughter parish responsibilities. The money will also be used to help purchase a new roof and needed maintenance for our Church. We ask each family to donate $10.00 a month towards this mortgage payment and new roof fund. Share Sunday is also a once-a-month collection that is distributed to several charities and social organizations within the local area and our own parishioners. The five charities we support are; ALMS House, Hope House, San Isidore Mission, CARE Clinic and St. Ann’s Catholic School. We also support our own parishioners in need. The list of recipients and the distribution percentage is reviewed and adjusted by the Parish Council annually. Donations of food and other items are distributed to the ALMS House, Catholic Charities and our own food bank. The Parish Capital Improvement collection comes almost every month and helps primarily to defray the costs of improvements for our Church, Social Hall and grounds. This includes special targeted donations for specific improvements.

Electronic Donations Want to donate to Good Shepherd on-line either one-time or recurring monthly?

If so, visit our web-site at www.good-shepherd-church.org and click on the E-Online Giving Form link under the Welcome tab and follow the instructions.

The Monthly envelope labeled “1/2 Can a Day/San Isidore Property Debt” is a once-a-month collection that helps pay the non-interest bearing mortgage payment for the land purchased by Good Shepherd for San Isidore’s new church as part of our mother/daughter parish responsibilities. The money will also be used for needed maintenance for our Church. Due to some confusion, the two have been separated on the same envelope – 1/2 Can a Day – San Isidore Property Debt. A check box will be placed in front and an amount line behind 1/2 Can a Day, a check box will be placed in front and an amount line behind San Isidore Property Debt. We ask each family to donate $10.00 a month towards this mortgage payment or new roof fund.

For your convenience we also have a 1/2 Can a Day display in the Gathering Area.

If you need a BAA envelope for your pledge, they are available on the Welcome Table.

Urgent need for Sick and Homebound Ministers The Eucharist is the source and the summit of every Catholic's life of faith. It is in partaking of Holy Communion that Catholics receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. It is important that Catholics not be deprived of the opportunity to receive the Blessed Sacrament due to illness, age, or confinement. When you visit a Parishioner, you share in prayer, read the Gospel and distribute the Eucharist.

For more information or to join our team, contact Deacon Pat, 910-818-0801, or Julie McLamb, 910-818-0789.

Join us for our next family night to share a meal and play bingo with prizes! Bring a casserole dish, such as Shepherd’s Pie, Lasagna, or Tuna Casserole to share. Drinks and desserts will be provided.

Angel’s Haven We invite all families with children under 4 years of age to take advantage and enjoy our Angel’s Haven. This room was created to help young families participate, help the children see what is happening at Mass and allow you to relax.

Angel’s Haven

Caring Contact Ministry This ministry contacts parishioners who have not attended Mass in a few weeks and we are in need of Disciples.

If you are interested in helping by making phone calls, or you know someone who is sick and not able to attend Mass, please contact Dina Simcox, 910-728-3910.

Gum Chewing and Food Consumption: Please keep in mind that there should not be any eating of food or gum chewing during Mass. We are to fast one hour before Communion. Before receiving Holy Communion, Catholics are asked to abstain from food, liquids and solids for one hour. (Outlines of the Catholic Faith, Page 26, Article 5c). Even though it has been mentioned that food is ok for children, please be mindful that children after a certain age should learn not to eat in church. This will help your child prepare for First Communion and to understand the meaning of fasting before Communion.

Please help us keep our Church and Gathering Area clean and bug free by providing crumb free, non-sticky snacks, if necessary for little ones. Please be attentive to your child eating and ensure your area is cleaned up after Mass. “Sticky hands equals Sticky Messes”. Thank you in advance for helping keep our Church and Gathering Area clean. Questions or concerns, please contact the Office, 425-1590.
