TAM SO EXCITED ABOUT THE SUCCESSES and activities we have going on within The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia, all made possible through your generous donations! These donations provide thousands of kids, of all privileges from myriad backgrounds, the opportunity to learn life skills essential to navigating life’s challenges through the game of golf.

Some of the 2017 highlights include taking Lenny Gipson and Riley Quartermain to Naples, FL for the Golf to Paradise Challenge as part of the PGA Tour Champion’s Chubb Classic. These participants had the opportunity to meet and talk with tour players, get interviewed by the Golf Channel and be in the Media Room, in addition to playing in a team event representing our Chapter.

This past June, we sent a group of nine participants and two coaches to North Carolina for The First Tee Carolina’s Leadership Academy. Here they each had the opportunity to meet other TFT participants and learn leadership skills while gaining confidence to set them up for success in life.

TFTGP also sent a team of four kids to Raritan Valley, NJ for the TFT Northeast Regional Challenge golf tournament where they finished in second place! Of special note, congratulations to Andrew Magno on having his first hole-in-one! While there, the kids had the opportunity to visit the Statue of Liberty with participants from 12 different First Tee chapters. Other highlights included our kids caddying for sports legends at our Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament. TFTGP participant alumni and Intern Kyle Spaulding said, “It was an exhilarating experience to caddy for such a legendary person as Julius Erving and absorb all the advice I could in our time together.”

Thanks to the generosity of Merion Golf Club for hosting our participants each week at the Merion West Golf Course. Over 50 kids benefitted from this experience and we were pleased to see that these opportunities further kindled their passions for golf and The First Tee. The Philadelphia Cricket Club and James Nam were also generous in allowing 24 of our kids to play the St. Martins course in a fun event to get some of our less experienced golfers playing a different course. Lunch and ice cream at the pool was a big hit to top off the day.

The First Tee was excited to merge this year with the Kids on the Hill organization, which was started by Jim Sykes. In honor of Mr. Sykes, we are pleased to continue his vision promoting youth golf through this program supporting over 75 Police Athletic League kids each summer for eight weeks. We aim to increase the partici-pation numbers to well over 100 in the coming years.

Walnut Lane Golf Club had a tremendously successful year with rounds up over 15 percent from the previous year and the course in fabulous condition the entire season. Ben Davies stepped in to become our new Superintendent and his team could not have done a better job in making the course better each day. The entire staff welcomed all of the positive comments about the condition of the golf course and facilities. We could not do what we do to promote public golf and our youth without the support of many key individuals and companies. We wholeheartedly thank you because we could not operate without your help. Thanks to: Lawn & Golf Company, Asplundh Tree Experts, Mike Cavanaugh and Floratine Products, Philadelphia Golf Course Superintendents Association, Frank Shuman, Bill Corcoran, Jay Perisian, and Rob Nolek. We are looking forward to continuing the great work done in 2017 to springboard the course conditions in 2018. It will be an even better year than the last.

I continue to be amazed at how many good people we have in our community, who embrace what we do, and generously support our efforts in so many ways. It is wonderful to see that golf has positively impacted so many of you, as it has me, and that you desire to pass this impact on to our next generation. As a result, we are making our community a much better place and are poised for great success in the future. From all of us at The First Tee, thank you.

Sincerely,

William Hyndman VExecutive Director, The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia

2.About Us

OUNG PEOPLE IN OUR COUNTRY TODAY are facing critical challenges. Among these challenges include the fact that eleven million young people do not have a safe place to be after the school bell rings, one in three will reach adulthood not ever having a positive mentor, one in six children are food inse-

cure, one in five students are leaving our schools each year and do not graduate. The First Tee is addressing these challenges intentionally through character education in its programs, seamlessly integrated with a golf curriculum.

The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia introduces young people to The First Tee Nine Core Values, Nine Healthy Habits and Life Lessons inherent in the game of life and golf, preparing them for success both on and off the course. In 2017 alone, through providing equal access to golf, we positively impacted the lives of more than 17,000 kids. In 2018, our goal is to reach 24,000 young people in our eight county footprint.

The First Tee has developed pro-grams built on the positive youth de-velopment framework. Our programs provide safe places, intentional and trained caring adults, and develop-mentally appropriate and empower-ing curricula. At elementary schools, youth centers and golf facilities, stu-dents participate in a seamless golf and character education program, promoting physical activity, intro-ducing them to a lifelong sport while embedding core values and wellness in every lesson.

Our kids are different than other kids. They look you in the eye when saying hello. They shake your hand. They are respectful. Because of you, our mission and momentum will continue to prepare the next generation to be the best they can be.

The mission of The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia is to positively impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

An investment in The First Tee is an investment in Good Students, Good Citizens and eventually, Good Employees.

“ A golf tee supports the ball so you can lift it and make it fly a little farther down the fairway. The First Tee works much the same way but instead of lifting golf balls we lift young people. It teaches them values like perseverance, confidence, and judgment. Values that will help them fly and go a little bit further in life.“

The First Tee National Schools Program has been a huge success in my P.E. curricu-lum. Not only do my students get a chance to participate in and learn about a lifetime sport which is golf, they also learn valuable life skills/core values that are applicable to any facet of life. The First Tee also fits seamlessly into our school’s EIC Model (environment as an integrating context for learning) because golf requires a lot of respect for the environment as well as discipline for golf course maintenance.”

3.ProgramsThe First Tee Life Skills Program Young people progress in our program by moving through the levels of Player, Par, Birdie, Eagle and Ace. The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia offers programming and educational classes at 5 Green Grass locations. Each level introduces our kids to new and more advanced concepts of golf. These locations include our two home Philadelphia facilities: Walnut Lane Golf Club and The Jay Sigel Learning Center at FDR Golf Club. Our newest locations are Bensalem Township Country Club, City Line Avenue Sports and Spring Mill Country Club.

The First Tee National School Program (NSP)NSP introduces the game of golf, The First Tee Nine Core Values, and Nine Healthy Habits to elementary school students during their physical education classes. NSP creates an environment where young people are introduced to the lifelong sport, while learning the basic golf motor skills and the inherent values of the game.

The First Tee DRIVE Program is an introduction to the game of golf and The First Tee life skills at after school environments such as the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club. It is a set of 18 golf activity plans designed to provide a fun, engaging program which introduces kids to golf and exposes them to the behaviors associated with The First Tee’s Nine Core Values.

Girls GolfOur girls golf program focuses on inspiring girls to feel confident, build positive self-esteem, and live active and healthy lifestyles. The curriculum incorporates the “Five E’s of Girls Golf”: Energize, Engage, Empower, Enrich and Exercise.

OutreachAnnually, various organizations, schools, associations and camps invite us to their facility to bring golf to them. Other outreach opportunities are when we invite programs to come to us at Walnut Lane Golf Club or The Jay Sigel Learning Center. A few of our frequent visitors are Queens Village Association, Student in the Juvenile Justice, PAL, Boys & Girls Club, First Philadelphia Charter School, Greenwoods Charter School, AIM Academy, Blair Christian Academy, Mayfair Play-ground and 14 schools in our Middle Schools Golf Program.

I was fortunate enough to discover golf through The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia and it was honestly the best thing that has ever happened to me. The game of golf is by far my favorite activity and The First Tee allowed me to discover my passion for it. Not only has The First Tee taught me a lot about the game of golf but it has impacted my life skills as well. Since becoming an active member, I have become a better student and my grades have im-proved. More importantly, I have become a better person.” – Luke Beggy, 17, Eagle Participant‘‘

As parents, we search for activities to help our children grow into decent people. In discov-ering The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia, we have found coaches who are providing instructions to improve our sons’ golf skills. These lessons are given with great kindness and encouragement.

More importantly, they are growing into kind young men. The nine core values interwoven into all activities are an intrinsic resource. Our children get to learn how lessons on the golf course apply to everyday life. As parents, we are most grateful that our children have been able to participate in all The First Tee has to offer.”

Celebrity InvitationalOur 2nd annual Celebrity Invitational was held on July 12, 2017 at Huntingdon Valley Country Club. With over 100 golfers and 25 celebrities, our kids had a special day caddying for the celebrities. Throughout the day, we proudly noticed our kids embracing The First Tee 9 Core Values. They introduced themselves con-fidently, looked our guests in the eye, shook hands and were respectful. Thanks to everyone, we raised over $100,000 to benefit our programs and young people. Our program participants cannot wait for next year.

It was a full day from breakfast to dinner and our kids were actively involved. They took player’s bags out of their cars, chatted with them at lunch and dinner and played with our guests on the par 3 holes. Our kids were stars! Hats off to Chubb for sponsoring a day that raised over $150,000 in support of programming in our eight county footprint. See you next year at The Ace Club!

Blue Bell Country Club Summer SolsticeRain or shine, our good friends at Blue Bell Country Club were determined to raise funds for The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia. Seven golfers played with many of the players completing 63 holes to make a difference for our kids. Megan and Brian McGowan along with AJ Dale are the founders of the first ever Blue Bell Country Club Summer Solstice Marathon. Thank you Megan, Brian, AJ and the members of Blue Bell Country Club for raising over $3,000 to benefit our young people.

When the idea of a golf Marathon was first raised, our minds im-mediately turned to how we can use the day of golf for a bigger purpose. And in conversation with our friends and fellow members of Blue Bell Country Club, it seemed like The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia was the perfect charity. Without our friends, fellow members, and staff at Blue Bell Country Club this never would have been possible! We are already planning to make next year even bigger!” – Brian McGowan

‘‘Audi Sixers Watch PartyOn October 18, 2017, Audi of Devon, PA enthusiastically hosted a fun gathering in their beautiful show room for The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia. While mingling with new and old friends, we watched the Sixers opening game against the Washington Wizards to raise funds for our Life Skills programs. The night was filled with people learning more about The First Tee, delicious food by The Goat’s Beard Restaurant, raffle prizes and a putting contest thanks to U.S Hole in One. Thank you Audi North America for your First Tee partnership and passion for our mission. Join us next year and hopefully you could be the Hole in One winner.

Chubb Day of ServiceThrough Chubb Day of Service, 20 Chubb employees beautified The Jay Sigel Learning Center at the FDR Golf Course. They helped paint, repair the driving range, restore the putting green, collect golf balls on the range and prep a vegetable garden for our kids to plant in the Spring. Their hard work is instrumental in helping to improve the experience of our kids while aiding them on the path to success in life. Many thanks to the Chubb volunteers for their time, energy and desire to make a difference for our kids.

Asplundh Tree Experts

A team of 16 Asplundh employees came out to Walnut Lane Golf Club on a cold wet Saturday to help remove over 18 dead and dangerous trees. These dedicated individuals volunteered their time, passing up on an overtime opportunity. We thanked them for their hard work with well deserved Dalessandro’s cheesesteaks, enjoyed by all. Thank you Asplundh for making a difference!

Radley Run Country Club - West Chester, PA

Through the kindness of Radley Run CC members, over $3,000 was raised and donated to The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia in memory of Ben Washam, a Radley Run locker room attendant. Throughout his career, Ben collected golf clubs which he donated to The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia. TFTGP staff at our Jay Sigel Learning Center fondly recall Ben and his many golf club deliv-eries. Thank you Ben Washam and Radley Run for making a difference for our kids and community!

“ Ben was a great supporter of the First Tee of Greater Philadelphia and the members at Radley Run Country Club knew they could drop off clubs and golf equipment any time and Ben would make sure they got to the First Tee.”

Jericho National Golf Club - New Hope, PA

A special thank you goes out to a group of golfers from Jericho National Golf Club called the 4B’s (pictured) who made a $1,100 donation. This group turned their annual end of year tournament into a small fundraiser for The First Tee. Instead of awarding prizes to their winning groups, the 4B’s donated the entire pot and the group felt good about helping the kids in the local community.

7.Walnut Lane Golf ClubS MANY OF YOU KNOW, The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia is one of a few First Tee Chapters that have the privilege of operating their own golf course. Walnut Lane Golf Club is home to The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia and we are extremely proud of all the great things going on at this facility. It is an unbelievable luxury to have total access to an 18 hole facility for not only our youth participants, but also the public golfer

in Philadelphia.

Over the past few decades, many of Philadelphia’s public courses were neglected with very little effort and dollars spent on the upkeep and playability of the courses. Unfortunately when The First Tee took over the operation of Walnut Lane in 2016, our course was no exception. There were many issues affecting the quality of the overall golf experience for our customers and participants including countless trees that were either dead, dangerous, or over-hanging areas in play.

2017 showed remarkable progress in making our golf experience better for everyone that visited Walnut Lane. With the help and support from many individuals and companies, we have been able to solve many of our issues including:

• Cart path repairs and replacements

• All dead and dangerous trees removed – A special Thanks to Asplundh Tree Experts for their support!

• Many limbs trimmed and pruned. We no longer have the only dog leg left par-3 in the world! Another special Thanks to Ed Thomas of Ed’s Affordable Tree Service!

• Over 60 irrigation heads replaced or repaired

• Purchase of a new (to us!) Greens Mower, Fairway Mower, Rough Mower, and Chemical Sprayer

• Rebuilding of stone steps for walking access to the 8th tee box.

• Clubhouse renovations including paint and the build out of new office space

• Drainage project on hole #7 – this was completed during a volunteer day of The Pennsylvania Golf Course Superintendents who have showed continued support of our efforts for many years.

Our goal is to make Walnut Lane the most enjoyable public course in Philadelphia for both our participants and general public. It has been great to hear positive feedback from patrons about the work we are have done. However, we want people to know that we are not done! Moving forward in 2018, we will continue to remove trees and brush, finish the rest of the cart paths that were not replaced in round 1, and continue to improve the overall playing conditions of the golf course. The maintenance staff, led by Superintendent Ben Davies, has done an outstanding job and continue to make the course better each and every day.

I want to thank all that have helped us throughout the years, especially Bill Corcoran and Sumner Cross from Lawn and Golf Supply, Frank Shuman, Jay Parisian, Mike Cavanaugh from Florentine Products, and everyone at the PAGCS for their continued support. We cannot thank everyone enough for their time, hard work, and generosity in support of The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia. We look forward to having an even better 2018 season and can’t wait to see you all on the course.

Sincerely,

Sean KetchumDirector of Golf, The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia Walnut Lane Golf Club
