The Genesis account of Adam is critical to understanding the New Testament

• The account of Adam helps us to understand:– The Nature of God– The position and nature of man– The bad news of man’s fall– The good news of Jesus’ restoring man to

righteousness

Page 3: Good News in a Bad News World

We must believe the Bad News about Adam to grasp the Good

News about Jesus (second Adam)

Bad News - Sin and Death Reign

Bad News #1 – Adam SinnedBad News #2 – Adam Died because he sinnedBad News #3 – The result of Adam’s sin and

death is we are sinners and we die

Page 5: Good News in a Bad News World

Through Adam Sin and death came to all men.

Romans 5:12-21 (NET)12 So then, just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all people because all sinned –

How did all sin? – two views:Federal Headship – Adam was the representative head of the race. What Adam did is charged to his posterity.Seminalism – The union between Adam and his posterity is biological and genetic such that Adam embodied all human beings in a single collective entity. Thus all people are co-sinners with Adam.

Hebrews 7:9-10 (NET)9 And it could be said that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid a tithe through Abraham. 10

For he was still in his ancestor Abraham’s loins when Melchizedek met him.

Sin and death is not the result of the Mosaic Law

13 for before the law was given, sin was in the world, but there is no accounting for sin when there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam until Moses even over those who did not sin in the same way that Adam (who is a type of the coming one) transgressed.

Page 7: Good News in a Bad News World

Contrast: Whereas, Adam’s disobedience (sin) brought death to all of us,Christ’s obedience provided us

the gift of life.

Page 8: Good News in a Bad News World

15 But the gracious gift is not like the transgression. For if the many died through the transgression of the one man, how much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one man Jesus Christ multiply to the many!

Page 9: Good News in a Bad News World

Contrast: Whereas, Adam’s disobedience (sin)

brought judgment and condemnation,

Christ’s obedience (in the context of many sins) provided us the gift of

justification.

Page 10: Good News in a Bad News World

16 And the gift is not like the one who sinned. For judgment, resulting from the one transgression, led to condemnation, but the gracious gift from the many failures led to justification.

Page 11: Good News in a Bad News World

Contrast: Whereas, Adam’s disobedience

(sin) caused death to reign,Christ’s obedience (in the context

of many sins) provided us the gift of righteousness to reign in our lives.

Page 12: Good News in a Bad News World

17 For if, by the transgression of the one man, death reigned through the one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ!

Page 13: Good News in a Bad News World

Contrast: Whereas, Adam’s disobedience (sin) resulted in condemnation,

Christ’s obedience offered us the gift of righteousness that leads to

eternal life.

Page 14: Good News in a Bad News World

18 Consequently, just as condemnation for all people came through one transgression, so too through the one righteous act came righteousness leading to life for all people.

Page 15: Good News in a Bad News World

Contrast: Whereas, Adam’s disobedience

(sin) made many sinners,Christ’s obedience makes many

righteous.

Page 16: Good News in a Bad News World

Bad News vs. Good News19 For just as through the disobedience of the

one man many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of one man many

will be made righteous.

Page 17: Good News in a Bad News World

Contrast: Whereas, sin reigns in death,Christ’s grace reigns to bring

eternal life.

Page 18: Good News in a Bad News World

20 Now the law came in so that the transgression may increase, but where sin increased, grace multiplied all the more, 21 so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace will reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Good News

Romans 5:6-86 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 (For rarely

will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person perhaps someone might

possibly dare to die.) 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still

sinners, Christ died for us.

Christ Did it All

Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace you are saved

through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 it is not from works, so that no one

can boast.

Receive the gift

John 1:12 12 But to all who have received him – those who believe in his

name – he has given the right to become God’s children
