Pastor Paula’s Peace . . . .
Bette Midler sings, she dances, she does serious acting and comedic acting, she does movies and she does TV. What many people don't know, however, is that she also writes. In 1983, Bette Midler wrote a book, ostensibly for children, called The Saga of Baby Divine. It is exuberant and joyful and funny, just what you’d expect from the Divine Miss Midler.
One detail has stuck with me over the years.
Baby Divine is born, and grows.. Then, says the book, she learns to talk. Do you remember your first word? Did your parents tell you what it was? Mine was “moon.” But Baby Divine is an original. Her first word? “More!” “More!” It is not a “more” of selfishness and self-centeredness. This cry is the “more” of the hopeful, joyful, celebratory, gifted, giving human heart.
Baby Divine isn’t the only fictional character to cry “More.” Remember Charles Dickens’ Oliver? An orphan in Victorian England, surely one of the most miserable societies in which to be an outcast of any kind, the starved, beaten, hopeless boy innocently asks for more food from the overseer of his miserable hovel.
Just as in Jesus’ time, the one who asks simply to be treated with some kindness and a little justice is punished even further. Just as in Jesus’ time, the weak are kicked to the gutter like so much rubbish.
After a terrifying adventure, Dickens satisfies us nicely with an ending where the young Oliver is found to belong to a loving, wealthy man who is delighted to have him returned. At the end, Oliver finally has “more.”
However, Oliver longs for there to be “more” for his suffering friends who don’t have wealthy, long-lost relatives to find them. He longs for the least, the last and the lost to all have a banquet of love and “more”.
Jesus envisions a life of “more” for us--an abundant life with God.
What is your dream of the “abundant life"? I'd like to know.
You can tell me all about it at [email protected].
Shalom,
Pastor Paula

WOW!! More than 25 years ago Juel Farquhar
along with a few others saw a need to provide
a hot meal for the homeless in downtown
Fullerton. This group worked with 4 other
churches to create the “Hot Meals Ministry”
Program. Many of the other folks have now
moved away but Miss Juel continues to serve.
She has helped serve more than 120,000 meals.
Donations from the “Souper Bowl” collection
continue to financially support this
ministry. Not only has she shopped, cooked, served and cleaned but she
has encouraged and guided many other members and community volun-
teers to serve as well! She is a mentor to many and we have learned so
much from her. Jesus is clealy leading this program through Juel!!

Did you know that…?
Interviewed and written by Barbara Giasone
Close your eyes and think of a
person who is happy, not perky, but genuinely happy,
Pastor Paula Ferris suggested during a recent Sunday morn-
ing sermon. I needed only to turn around and spot Ella
Casto with her contagious
smile and lady-like demeanor.
We’re not talking about a sen-
ior congregant who appears to
have lived life to the fullest.
This is an eight-year-old who, when asked what makes her
happy, quickly responds, “God.” And when asked what
makes God happy, Ella adds: “People treating other people
the right way.”
Amen to that.
Later in the week, I met up with Ella and her family
in their Fullerton home. Dad Tom, an educator for special education students in the Orange Unified School District,
was on the floor playing Battleship with son John, 6, and daughter, Jenna, almost 4. Mom Carole was relaxed alongside
Ella after spending the day teaching English and advising Asso-ciated Student Body leaders at Western High School in Ana-
heim.
Indeed, Ella says her family makes her especially hap-
py. She laughs at John’s innocent jokes and deems Jenna “crazy” in a fun sort of way. “I like doing art projects with
her,” Ella says. “I’m experimenting with making Slime.”
From time to time, Ella sits down and tries to read her favorite book, Some Day by Alison Meghee and Peter Reynolds, to young Jenna. “But she doesn’t always listen,” Ella
concedes.
The book was a gift from her mother’s best friend, Michelle Duncan. The two mothers delivered their girls a few
months apart, allowing Jenna and Kendall Duncan to also be-come the best of friends. Both girls have been together in
kindergarten through third grade at Golden Hill School.
Happiness in Ella’s opinion also stretches to her
grandparents’ Jack and Eileen Jackson’s home in Anaheim.
“I cook meatballs with Grandma and play (train) dominoes
with both of them,” Ella offers.
Grandma Eileen was a big part of Ella’s pre-school
years when she would take Ella to the church’s Story Time
and sit on the floor, side-by-side, for activities. Ella, she
says, has always been so willing to help whether it’s getting
a meal on the table, making up games or nurturing her
siblings to do the right thing.
“I think Carole and Tom have always stressed
good behavior and manners in their children’s upbringing,”
Eileen says.
Lately, vacations have taken top billing on Ella’s
Happiness Meter. During the summer, the Casto family
cruised the western Caribbean. Ella particularly found joy
swimming with the dolphins in Jamaica and petting the tur-
tles in the Grand Cayman Islands. In Cozumel, she stum-
bled upon “huge turtles” in their environment, and found
“a big shell with a sea snail inside.”
Several weeks ago, Ella and Carole shared a Girl
Scout Mother-Daughter Weekend at Camp Sherman in
the San Bernardino Mountains. Ella ranks archery, food,
canoeing and sleeping in a cabin with friends on her
“favorites” list.
Parents Carole and Tom recall their childhoods
filled with adventure. For several years, Tom spent his
boyhood in San Juan Capistrano when skateboarding was a
popular hobby. “It was a time when the neighborhood
children spent a lot of time together having fun, when we
had true neighborhoods.”
Carole remembers spending time with her mother
and brothers in an Anaheim park. “Family time was really
important to all of us,” she says.
She was also a competitive baton twirler, active in
sports and on the high school dance team.
The happiness genes, securely embodied in Ella,
have had challenges. She explains her softball coach “didn’t
want me to smile. He said if I look serious, it will scare the
pitcher.” Yet, such a demand hasn’t kept the blue-eyed
blonde from enjoying other activities including her church
life where she faithfully attends Sunday school. A broad
smile emerges when she announces that receiving her Bi-
ble as part of the third-grade studies was a highlight. And
then, with an innocent expression, Ella offers her own pre-
scription for how people can be happy.
“Just tell them Jesus loves you,” she says.

We are nearing completion of our first Stephen Minister training class. We are very pleased
that all of our trainees, Barbara Giasone, Tammy Scrivner, Vivane Kirk, Brandon Scrivner, and
Bob Wilson from Orange will soon be able to begin serving as Stephen Ministers. Please
continue to hold them in your prayers. A commissioning service is planned for January.
Part of the Stephen Ministry process is the supervision meetings and continuous training that
everyone receives each month. This very vital part of the process is a way for each Stephen
Minister to get any needed support and feedback on their caring relationships. An important
point to remember is that ALL caring relationships are completely confidential to EVERYONE.
No personal information is shared at any time during the caring relationship. If you have any
questions regarding the Stephen Ministry process, please feel free to contact us.
John and I also conducted an introduction of the process to the staff last month. They are all
familiar with the Stephen Ministry and support us in this ministry. Will you continue to
support us in this new and vital ministry with your prayers, your service and your presence?
Grace and Blessings

FULLERTON FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH’S MISSION STATEMENT
Fullerton First United Methodist Church is a community of faith that seeks to be a growing and dynamic church in Fullerton with an outreach to this region of Orange County and beyond. We are a part of a world-wide communion who believe in God’s transforming love as demonstrated by the life and teaching and living influence of Jesus. Believing that we are undergirded by God’s presence through God’s Holy Spirit in our daily living, we serve God as we endeavor: to reach out and receive persons into the faith family as they are; to help persons relate to God and grow in their commitment to the values exemplified in Jesus; to provide opportunities for persons to grow and deepen their faith as Christian disciples; to send persons into God’s creation as faithful disciples. As God’s peop le we seek to bring a fresh vision of hope as we minister to one another and the larger community in which we reside. We seek to faithfully live out these four foundational missional principles. We shall endeavor to be a place of grace in today’s world.
