Exactly what is bologna? It doesn't smell, taste, or even look like any other meat. The reason is bologna is a mixture of several different meats. Bologna is a sausage, normally made of pork and beef. A few ingredients like salt, pepper and sugar are added. Everything is ground and mixed and stuffed into a casing. Historians speculate that it originated in Bologna Italy, where merchants who passed through picked it up during their global travels. The most famous bologna guThe most famous bologna guy, of course is Oscar Mayer. He immigrated from Bavaria to the U.S. with his parents in 1873. Oscar worked as a butcher in Detroit and moved to Chicago 3 years later. He and his brother opened their own busines 4 after that. The Mayer brothers made $59 their first day, which topped $10 million by 1911. In the 1930's the Ocsar Myer Company introduced its version of the hot dog (the Oscar Mayer weiner). Oscar F Mayer, died in 1955. He lived to see his dream grow from a small, two man meat shop to a mammoth food manufacturer of over 200 meat products. Today Oscar Mayer Foods is owned by Kraft Foods, has 11,000 employees and has annual sales of $2.3 billion.

How about the songs? In the 1965 aHow about the songs? In the 1965 a TV ad featured kids singing “If I were an Oscar Mayer weiner....” and the song “My bologna has a first name..it’s O-S-C-A-R....” debuted on TV in 1974.

The month of October is a busy one for the copperhead snake. One of Tennessee’s four venomous snake breeds (the other three are the cottonmouth, and the timber & western pigmy rattlesnakes) has a busy schedule for the month of October. The copperhead snake will be looking for a mate, mating, and start preparations for their hibernation. This, combined with tan, brown, and orange colored leaves soon to be covering the ground...putsground...puts Tennessee residents at risk.

While the bite of a copperhead can make you sick, the likelyhood of death is very remote. Small children, elderly, those with allergic reactions are the only victims who are in the high risk category.

MYTH: Copperheads travel in pairs.TRUTH: They compete for food, so no, they don’t travel together. Mating season is the only time you’ll find a pair together, and they’re sort of busy at that time.

MYTH: Baby copperhead bites are worse.TRUTH: Baby copperheads have smaller mouths, TRUTH: Baby copperheads have smaller mouths, fangs, and venom sacks. So no.

MYTH: Copperheads smell like cucumber.TRUTH: Well sort of. They excrete that smell when threatened. But not otherwise.

MYTH: Mothers guard their eggs.TRUTH: They don’t lay eggs. They give live birth of 1 to 20 snakes, usually in August.

MYTH: Copperheads breed with black rat snakes.TRUTH: They come from two very different biological backgrounds. Isn’t scientifically possible.
