Spend Quality Time• Give few minutes exclusively to the child,

Emotional Nurturance• Accept their emotions. Don’t impose your

views on their emotions.• Validate their feelings. Let them know you

Ground Rules

• Establish family values.• Make rules of discipline accordingly.• Think of consequences of breaking of rules

before setting them.• Don’t convey from a position of authority.• Rules are meant to be enforced.• Be firm but not harsh.• Have clarity and consistency.• Set daily routines and structured schedules.

Praise and Reward • Praise generously.• Look for what they do right (instead of wrong).• Be specific about what you are praising.• Praise will raise self confidence & self esteem.• Appreciate not doing wrong things.• Reward more with words and activities.• Avoid rewarding with material things or money.• Reward should not be unduly delayed.

Punishments and Reprimands • Stick to reprimands only, (instead of

punishing) as far as possible.• Criticize the habit, not the child.• Do not accuse or label the child.• Tone should be matter of fact, not insulting.• Avoid reprimanding in front of others.• Do not punish in physical ways.• Several small reprimands are better than one

drastic punishment.• Be patient, remember habits die hard.

Stay Actively Involved • Get involved in their daily lives & routines.

• Help them set routines & structure their days.• Find common interests. Develop interest in

their activities.• Find out about child’s special interests and

encourage. Participate in them.• Read together.• Watch a movie or a T.V program together.• Have exchange of help in each other’s work.

Treat Them Like Individuals • Remember they are not extensions of you.• They are unique entities with unique

personalities.• Do not compel them to perform as per your

expectations. Motivate them to excel without any comparisons.

• Help them to take simple decisions.• Repeat their feelings to show you understand.• Never compare with others.

Influence Positively • Identify strengths rather than weaknesses.• Help them build on inherent goodness.• Show faith and confidence in their

unpleasant issues quickly.• Don’t mix issues or rake up the past.• Respect but do not pamper.

Tell Yourself • Your child is special to you, not to the whole

world.• You should help your child fit into the main

stream by teaching him/her compassion, fair- play and sharing.

• Do not over indulge.• Do not compensate him/her with material

gifts for your guilt.

Moral Issues • Teach your child to learn to put others before

self.• Try so that your child is a good citizen and

understands social responsibilities.• Set examples yourself for “integrity” and

ethics.• Help him/her develop a sense of right & wrong.• Above all – encourage your child to be a good

human being.

Learn from Them • Be open to their view points.

• Do not ridicule or reject all new things or ideas.
