Pre-Game

Mike

Infantino The Pre-Game

* establishes teamwork and focus

*discussion, topics come from the Refereeinput from the Umpire and Field Judge

* pre-game should start with managing the locker room

* pregame does not need to dwell on mechanics and rules as much as:

Teamwork Judgment Game Management

Page 18: Good Partners Good C rew

Pre- game types:

1.List- start to finish2.The index card3.Relevant for today4.Relaxed

They all work and accomplish game readiness.

Good Partners: Teamwork •Partners have good on-ball, off-

ball looks; partners are aware of each other’s PCA.

Live it during the game. Use a field diagram.

Page 21: Good Partners Good C rew
Page 22: Good Partners Good C rew

Partners have FEEL

An intuitive understanding of the game.

Goes beyond the basic mechanics and rules.

Page 23: Good Partners Good C rew

FEEL:

*aware of the flow and pace of the game.

*are aware of the score, fouls, and best player.

*partners understands the type of game we are in.

Page 24: Good Partners Good C rew

Partners Communicate

* Crew comes together once or twice during the game to “get it right”.

•Nothing better than seeing stripes talking and making a decision.

•Other sports do it.

Page 25: Good Partners Good C rew

* Partners recognize the “rough spots” and get through it without making it “rougher”.

* Restarts are safe and in-sync with the ready go signal.

Page 26: Good Partners Good C rew

Catalogue calls Mirror

•A call at one end is a similar call at the other end… a good no call at one end is a no call at the other end…(or a bad no call is a 50/50 let go at the other end).

It’s not what “I” call but what “we” call.

Page 27: Good Partners Good C rew

Responding skills are the same:

•listen, acknowledge, ignore, protect our partners, TCB.

Answer questions, ignore comments.

Don’t say dumb stuff. It comes back. “can’t misquote silence”

Page 28: Good Partners Good C rew

Repertoire of phrases:

Having phases ready to go is like having tricks up your sleeve.

Consider some of these when you have an excited coach:

Page 29: Good Partners Good C rew

“Coach, I hear you” “we’ll watch for that ”

“He had a good look at that play” “Didn’t see it that way, Coach”“I will listen to you, but you need to get

back .

“I hear you but we are moving on” “not every play” “enough”

Try these:“Coach, I will get back to you”“Coach, we missed it”

Page 30: Good Partners Good C rew

Game Management

•Partners know and use the captains when needed. Use your card.

•Partners know when to slow down when needed, especially in 4th quarter. “Our pace, not theirs”

•Partners help each other “Let me get the next one”

Page 31: Good Partners Good C rew

Partners communicate and adjust at time-outs and quarters.

•Don’t rehash old stuff. Move forward.

•Referee initiates positive comments and suggestions.

•Don’t want to lose anyone.

Page 32: Good Partners Good C rew

From a mentor

“We cannot control everything, but can control some things”

Page 33: Good Partners Good C rew

*Arrive on time (early) *discuss topics

*look good

*good introductions*Good first impressions

*conduct a good face-off *be in the right position

Page 34: Good Partners Good C rew

*Hustle

*Be a good R (lead) *Be a good U/ FJ (listen)

Limit what you say.

*Respond to questions, not comments.

*“Let’s not be too good”

The rest is up to them.Officiate the game they give us.

Page 35: Good Partners Good C rew

Managing the people of the Game

Page 36: Good Partners Good C rew

The Players:

Patience- players are in the arena

Communicate with them- they are better listeners than we think.

Be preventative- “It’s not a foul, but that was close”

“Big Boy lacrosse” mp

Page 37: Good Partners Good C rew

The Coaches:

* Trust factor comes. Be patient. Know your spot.

* Listen, say little. Answer questions.

* Consider levels of management

*Use hierarchy of responses.

Page 38: Good Partners Good C rew

The Crew:

Keep it positive. Look forward, not backward.

Make adjustments at quarters, TO. One voice, mostly the R.

R needs to do well before the game too. Manage the locker room (or the parking lot).

Page 39: Good Partners Good C rew

True flags

Trust our no calls.

Get the whales, not the minnows

Tighten or find a flow.

Communication Coverage Consistency

Page 40: Good Partners Good C rew

Survival skills (from a mentor)

Do the easy stuff well. Pre-game, first impression stuff.

Don’t expect to do well early.Don’t expect to be perfect.

“Survive and advance”

Page 41: Good Partners Good C rew

It’s like:“kicking alligators from a rope” “wearing your fireman’s uniform”

Develop friendships. Find Mentors. There have been many good ones.

Page 42: Good Partners Good C rew

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV3ucaAGtqM A fight: come together.

Page 43: Good Partners Good C rew

Comments on good partners from the experts around the

country

Page 44: Good Partners Good C rew

Each game, one R says…..

“we’re going to go out there and do a good job. The PLAYERS need it. The FANS need it. WE need it and the GAME DESERVES it “

Page 45: Good Partners Good C rew
Page 46: Good Partners Good C rew

What if we are not on the same page?

What to do with a rogue official…..

Page 47: Good Partners Good C rew

Partners work to be the best team on the field, not the 3rd best team.

Nothing better than being in-sync with your partner.

Page 48: Good Partners Good C rew

Keys to Good Officiating

1. Mechanics2. Rules3. Game Management 4. Common sense officiating.

____ ____ ____ ____Rank order.

Page 49: Good Partners Good C rew

Best type of official ?

a. Someone who loves the game and enjoys the skill of the players?

OR

b. Someone who thinks like an official?

• officiate another sport? Gives you FEEL

Page 51: Good Partners Good C rew

It is going to start getting crazy.

We need to manage our game, be good partners or they will

manage us!

Page 52: Good Partners Good C rew

Enjoy the game.

Sometimes it’s like work. When it is, go to

work.
