September 25, 2016

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Saint James Catholic School opened its doors for the sixth year as the sole Catholic school in Good Shepherd Parish. I am pleased to announce that enrollment increased by14 students over last year. As St. James begins its 24th year, we are led by our principal, Mrs. Nancy Naimey, who is beginning her fourth year among us. I want to express my appreciation and support for the hard work & graceful way the school staff, teachers, students, parents and school board members con-

tinue to collaborate in order to provide a quality Catholic education for our youth. I am grateful for the generosity of parishioners, who dutifully contribute each week to the weekend offertory; you know that a significant portion of the offertory collection supports our parish school each year – a total of $ 281,000 budgeted for 2016-2017. Many parishioners provide this support even though they do not have school-aged children. This year, there is additional financial aid provided for students in need total-ing about $90,000, thanks to a $25,000 gift from the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec, with the other $65,000 coming from the annual legacy trust distributions, individual parishioner donations, & designated funds for Catholic Education from the Capital Campaign. These gifts of tuition assistance enable us to offer more to families, which in turn helps to increase our enrollment. With parents, students and staff, I look for-ward to a terrific school year! (2) Diocesan officials have asked us to remind couples intending to marry that they must contact the pastor/priest of the parish at least six months prior to making any plans for a church wedding. This time is needed to ensure that the freedom of both parties to enter a marriage is established, that the required documents are gathered and proper forms completed, and that adequate catechesis and marriage preparation take place. Both priests and couples are reminded that only a priest or deacon currently assigned to a parish can validly witness or dele-gate another minister (that is, only they can delegate either a visiting or retired priest or deacon) to perform a wedding ceremony within their parish. (3) St. Joseph Church parking lot update: The handicap entry steps now have handrails so that doorway is now back in service. We plan to add a safety fence behind the handrails, as well as along the ramp, and expect that to be completed soon. The final coat of pavement scheduled for this past week was postponed due to rain. It is now scheduled for this coming week. The parking lot will be closed for the entire week to give the pavement & striping adequate time to harden and dry. (4) Thank You of the Week: To volun-teers who worked with parish staff to clean, scrape, trim, cut, paint, patch, plant, prune, haul and do all sorts of other work to beautify our parish buildings, grounds and ceme-teries over the course of the summer. Given the age of our facilities and the harshness of Maine winters, it is a never ending job. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 7 - Msgr. Tonne: The British Broadcasting Corporation was preparing two programs, one on “heaven,” the other on “hell.” Wishing to be accurate, the producer wrote the station’s Catholic consultant, Father Green, O.F.M., asking: “How can a person know for sure if there is a heaven or a hell?” The good padre answered with one word: “Die!”

BABY CLOTHES AND FURNITURE NEEDED: The Social Justice & Peace Commission would like

your support in helping 2 young women who are expecting babies in Sept. & Dec. On their

own and living temporarily at Sweetser, they have nothing for the babies they are expecting. They could use new or gently used baby clothes, as well as a new

or used crib, stroller, high chair and carrier. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. We

hope we can give them a helping hand to get started.

Bring BABY CLOTHES to the parish office. Call Sara at Sweetser, 294-4482, to arrange delivery/pick up of other items.
