This year has only just begun, andthere are already some amazingthings looking to happen. From theawesome tours, the up and comingnew artists, and all of the crazy shitthat happens in between.

Personally, I like to experience allthe EDM I can live because, well, why not? There are a couple oftours that everyone needs to checkout if they want to feel completed.

DJ Carnage has taken quite therise to fame in the last few years.Starting on the smaller, more bassheavy stages, he has made his wayto main stage at festivals across theworld and is bringing this talents toyou on his “Papi Gordo Tour.” Oneof the things that make this tourspecial is the crew he is touringwith. Valentino Khan and Kayzobring the full effect of show togetherwith the range of genres they span.Between the three artists, I wasable to hear everything from dub-step, trap, hardstyle, all types ofhouse, and some things I reallycouldn’t even put into a genre. Andwith all the dope music, Carnagemanaged to take it to the next levelwith his introduction. I’ve been to alot of shows before and I have yetto see as cinematic and intriguingintro. I don’t want to ruin the detailsfor you, but your boy Carnage basically gets tortured a little, killed, then comes back to life in a wellproduced video playing before thebig man himself comes out. Howcan you not get excited whenyou’re seeing that live?

Now, head-banging dubstepmight not appeal to most of you,but it surely appeals to me. Thereare few live shows I would rathergo to than one where I can get asolid crew of people and just goabsolutely wild for 4 hours and notgive a damn. This description canbe summed up by the “TheParadox Tour.” When you puttogether Figure, Bear Grillz, andExcision into one epic night, youknow things are gonna get wild. With some of the craziest lightingand video production design in thebusiness, their 150,000 watts of

power will most likely blow youaway. Excision’s hard hitting basshas always been his signature andhe’s stuck with this style for a whileand we can’t get enough. But youalso can’t forget about the animalhimself, Bear Grillz. I was luckyenough to see Bear Grillz threetimes in 2015, and get to bring in2016 with one of his shows as well.It seems like Bear Grillz has justcatapulted to the top of the dubstepcharts in only the last year. He’s gotthat energetic, upbeat style that heuses to remix bangers and release

his own original filth. This is a touryou definitely don’t want to missand I wish I could go see it everyweek for the entire year.

Does everyone remember whenMarshmello came out of nowhere?People had no idea who this guywas, how he got so popular, whywere major artists supporting thisrandom guy’s music, and what did itall mean? Well, the next

“Marshmello” has come out ofnowhere (although not quite asmysterious). In the span of 24hours, someone named Slushiireleased three amazing remixesand posted them onSoundcloud. He was immediate-ly supported by Marshmello andthe tracks have an extremelyhigh production quality. Afterdoing some snooping around, itseems that Slushii has beenaround for a little while, previ-ously under the name DJSwoon. He is no newcomer tothe world of EDM, and it shows. He brings a style of melodic

bass (similar to Marshmello) withhard dubstep and trap drops.Additionally, he seems to start hissongs off with a nice, breezy pianoriff before bringing in the vocals orthe main progression. I hope to see a lot more of Slushii; and I think with the leadership of MoeShalizi at Redlight Management, we will. Looking forward to some solid Slushii collabs in thefuture.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments [email protected]. Keepraging, my friends.

London Has FallenStarring Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman,Aaron Eckhart, Melissa Leo, AngelaBassett, Radha Mitchell Directed by Babak NajafiFocus Features

Gods Of EgyptStarring Gerard Butler, Abbey LeeKershaw, Rufus Sewell, Brenton Twaites,Geoffrey RushDirected by Alex ProyasLionsgate

In the commercial film world, we have settled into that usual time of slim pickingsbetween the holidays and the spring/summer

film seasons. Whobetter to call uponhunky GerardButler, whose pecslaunched 300 intothe stuff of actionfilm legend – and is

the headliner in both of these new films aswell.

Before we even saw it, we laughed: Thetelevised trailer for Gods Of Egypt, despite themovie’s reportedly insane budget, might be themost ridiculous-looking ad since the famedstinker Snakes On A Plane – the costumesare preposterous, and there’s more CGI thaninside Peter Foldes’ yellowing Mac hard drive. Now that the film is out, we can report that it’s

not nearly as over-the-top corny as its ubiquitous TV adsmight suggest – but it'ssurely no classic, andnothing about it ringssincere; the story ofSet, “the god of darkness,” turningEgypt into his own personal realm ofchaos doesn’t sound

like the sort of thing that will make teens begtheir parents for $20 for a matinee showing, despite all the non-stop special effects. Butler? His casting here as Set seems meaningless,as he’s just a prop for all the SMASH! BOOM!POW!

Thankfully, the handsome Scottish star triesa lot harder in London Has Fallen, as he’sgiven a lot more to work with: In this sequel toOlympus Has Fallen, the world’s leaders havecongregated in London for the funeral of theBritish Prime Minister, but the solemn eventturns into a scene where someone is not onlytrying to kill every one of those leaders, butalso to blow up every landmark in London atthe same time. Here comes the U.S. to therescue as the Secret Service’s Mike Banning(Butler, who really ought to be considered tobecome the next James Bond) and thePresident (Eckhart) get down to business andfoil a plot that comes close to rocking theentire planet ot its core.

The subject matterseems grim, but directorBabak Najafi seemsabout as serious as awhoopie cushion, allowing the acts of daring-do to run togetherinto a satisfying, enter-taining conclusion thatyou’ll forget you even sawabout a half-hour afterleaving the theater. Suchis March at the movies.

Most spring training stories are fluff, not worthreading – but an exception was New York Postcolumnist Kevin Kernan’s piece on the NewYork Mets’ Matt Harvey on the day that pitchers and catchers reported to training

camp in Port St. Lucie, Florida, as the journalist perfectly captured the pitcher’s aloof, narcissistic nature. Harvey made sure themedia saw him arrive in style in a newMaserati. Professional athletes are wealthyand have the right to purchase anything theywant, but most shy away from expensivesports cars as theyattract the attention ofboth law enforcementauthorities and criminals. Of morepressing concern toMets fans: Harvey isalways blasé when itcomes to the topic ofsigning a long-term contract; he’s scheduledto be a free agent inthree years. Harvey hasevery right to test themarket, but it wouldn’tkill him to at least statethat he would like toremain a Met; JacobdeGrom has already

done so. If Mets fans were concerned aboutretaining Yoenis Cespedes, they’ll likely beapoplectic in 2018 if Harvey walks. Kernanbelieves it might not be unfathomable for GMSandy Alderson to consider trading Harveysooner rather than later so that the team canget better assets in return. No one is suggesting that the Mets deal Harvey in a fit ofpique – similar to nearly 40 years ago whenthey shipped Tom Seaver to the Reds for apaltry haul in return – but Harvey shouldn’t beconsidered to be an “untouchable.”

Mets executives couldn’t have been happythat Harvey decided to appear on Bravo’s“Watch What Happens Live!” last month, where he admitted to host Andy Cohen that hehas been intimate on the baseball diamond

and has engaged in a menage-a-trois, but surprisinglyhas yet to join the mile-high club.Harvey wisely pleased the fifthwhen Cohen asked him whichMets player was the bestendowed.

The New York Yankees suffered a setback as first baseman Greg Bird underwentshoulder surgery, forcing theyoung player out for this season.Bird did a fine job filling in forMark Teixeira after Teixeira fractured his shin.

At a recent Topps event to promote his 2016 card, Yankeesoutfielder Carlos Beltran said thathe has no plans to retire when his

contract expires at the end of this season.Former New York Knicks coach Derek

Fisher saw his image take a hit when it wasrevealed that he was carrying on with theestranged wife of former teammate MattBarnes. New York Daily News NBA columnistFrank Isola wrote that one reason that theKnicks traded their former first round pick, TimHardaway, Jr., to the Atlanta Hawks werebecause of unsubstantiated reports that Fisherand Hardaway were dating the same woman.ESPN analyst Jalen Rose tweeted that NBA

Joss Stone, the UK export who hasbecome one of the most famous soul andR&B singers of her generation, makes her debut on Friday, March 18 at 8 pm atThe Space At Westbury. Tickets and information: thespaceatwestbury.com and

ticketmaster.com.By her own admission, Stone has been

obsessed with soul music since she was a little girl. By the time she was in her earlyteens, she had begun to intuitively hone hergravelly but lustrous vocals by singing along toAretha’s Franklin’s Greatest Hits. She beganpursuing a singing career at 13, securing arecord deal at 15, and recording her

star-making debut album, The Soul Sessions, which was released in 2003. Ten years onfrom those stunning debut sessions, Stonedecided to bring things full circle and revisitwhere it all began with her followup to thatmulti million-selling debut, The Soul SessionsVolume 2. The album was well received globally and charted in the Top 20 both in theUK and in the US, garnering some of the besther reviews in years. Last year, Stonereleased a new album, Water For Your Soul, that shows her maturing as a singer and song-

writer but not losing the soulful edge that’s made hera superstar.

In her short life andalready long career, Stonehas performed onstage withthe likes of James Brown,Gladys Knight, SolomonBurke, Blondie, SmokeyRobinson, and MelissaEtheridge, among others. She’s contributed to albumsby Jeff Beck and Ringo Starr, played the Super Bowl pre-game show, performedon the Grammy Awards, andhas won a Grammy herself. She’s approached it all with asense of independence andjoie de vivre. Stone hasalways been a bit of a rebel;whether she’s dancing bare-foot onstage, dyeing her hairvarious colors, or speakingout on issues she’s passion-ate about, part of what herfans love about her is thatshe’s a free-spirit.

As Stone herself put it: “Mymission is to explore andunderstand the universal language of music in everycountry on the planet. Thetour will be tiring and toughand I know at times veryemotional, but it will be a trulyamazing journey.”

Info: sonomawireworks.com.Get Hot With Winterland: Tone Tubby, a

distributor of hempcone speakers for acousticand electric instrument amplification haveintroduced their new Winterland 12-inch, 30-

watt-rated ceramic magnet guitar and acousticinstrument amplifier speaker.

Named after the legendary San Franciscoconcert hall, the Tone Tubby Winterland deliv-ers the clean, dynamically uncompressed andarticulate tone of the classic ceramic-magnet,high-power-handling speakers of the 1970s,1980s, and 1990s, with modern refinementslike its hemp driver cone and soft dome thatprovide a smoothness and harmonic richnessunavailable from conventional paper conematerial.

The Winterland sounds articulate, clear andnuanced when played clean and delivers acutting yet full-bodied tone when played hardor used with overdriven tube amps or overdrive, distortion or fuzz pedals. It’s available in 8-ohm and 16-ohm models.

"Our new Winterland is the perfect speakerfor players who want to maintain the distinctsonic personality of their guitar, amp, or rigwith the touch sensitivity only a custom-designed hemp cone and ceramic magnet can

produce," said Charlie Shapiro, Tone TubbyTechnical Marketing Specialist. "The speakerhas a rich low end and a midrange peak anda touch of upper-midrange emphasis that addpresence."

"When driven hard, the Winterland speakerdoes not compress with magnet dynamics.Instead, it generates cone overdrive," Shapirosaid. "The custom-designed hemp coneremains stable, which virtually eliminates conecry, thus making the Winterland ideal for gui-tarists who use a dynamic picking attack tomove notes from semi-clean to overdriven."

The Winterland has a high 101.3dB sensi-tivity, adding to its dynamic responsivenessand making it a choice for both low-poweredamps that can benefit from greater volumeand headroom, to large stacks that crank outarena-volume SPL. It has a retail list price of$215; for more information on this and otherproducts, log on to tonetubby.com.

Dave Brock and his unique Doorstribute, Wild Child set the night on firewith their 19-song set at thisHuntington hotspot. Truth was foundin advertising as the neon marquee litthe boulevard bearing the slogan: “AJim Morrison Celebration.”

The unmistakable opening riff to“Roadhouse Blues” signaled the start

of the party as the band recreated theambiance and nuance of the originalDoors. Next up where such now-standards as “Break On Through,”“Soul Kitchen,” “Touch Me,” and“Winter Time.” With each passingnumber, it was easy to wonder what gem would next be polished and presented as a delicacy for the audience to savor: “Alabama Song

(Whiskey Bar)” ripped into a haunting “Back Door Man.” The jaunty celebration of bar-hoppingbased on Berthold Brecht's poetryperfectly melded into the raucousdebauchery of “what the little girls understand.” Moving into “Hello I Love You,” sliding with easeinto the groove that makes the tunefun and unmistakable, they continuedwith “Strange Days,” “When TheMusic's Over,” “Love Me Two Times,”and “Crystal Ship.”

Brock hesitated to start the vocal to “Peace Frog” to let the opening riff embed itself like a fishhook that set the crowd to dancing as if it was caught on a line. The set finished off with “Riders On The Storm,” “Love Her Madly,”“Not To Touch The Earth,” and the eternal “Light My Fire.” Brock left the stage while the guitar solo rang out, and he had clearly left a stamp on the evening by thetime he had returned for the encore – and scored with a fine “L.A.Woman” and a splendid rendering of “The End.”

The master showman thanked the crowd, and announced that WildChild would likely be back touring inthe spring. The excitement, showmanship, and musicianship displayed on this evening is likelyalready selling tickets for the promised shows to come.

At this December performance,Mad Co. struck powerfully wielded thehits created by Bad Company. Theopener, “Rock Steady,” set the tone, most appropriate to summarize theefforts of the band. “Movin' On” followed; lead singer “Texas” Bob Weirannounced that this was the band'sequivalent of playing Madison SquareGarden – and it held nothing back.

Highlights included“Good Lovin' Gone Bad,”“Shooting Star,” and“Rock And Roll Fantasy.”Billy Dee set a fine foundation on bass, andJeff Hickman rounded outa tight rhythm section onthe drums. Joe Sicilianoofferedfine leadson guitar, while JayWalkerrocked the keyboards. The showreached a climax with Bad Company'snamesake tune, much to the delight ofmany fans who danced and sangalong. Mad Co. took the audience intohalftime with “All Right Now,” havingleft it all out on the field.

Hammer Of The Gods ensuredthat more good times were to follow, opening with “Achilles Last Stand,”proving this tribute act’s longevity andpopularity have been no accident. The group has added a video

backdrop to its presentation, adding tothe meticulous look the group alreadyhas recreated with its theatricality.Next: a hopping little helping of “RockAnd Roll,’ then the catalog took over:“Trampled Underfoot,” “Stairway ToHeaven,” “Houses Of The Holy,” and“Black Dog.” Modern technologyadded a Facebook request for“Physical Graffiti,” messaged in during

the performance. “Kashmir” provideda rousing stomp before the encore;after toweling off, the band offered“Whole Lotta Love” and “What Is AndWhat Should Never Be.”

Mad Co. took on the unenviabletask of opening for a hot, establishedband, which HOTG has been foryears. While Hammer Of The Gods produced its usual fine show,Mad Co. more than held its own. These two bands have shared thesame bill on several occasions, and ithas proved to be a fine “two-fer” forclassic rock fans.

As a public service, rather than hit youwith hype or list the current members of thebands (there have been changes; for

example, Harold Melvin died several yearsago), here's a list of the biggest hits from thetype of groove that never will die: The soundsof real, heartfelt soul:

The Stylistics: Easily one of the greatest

vocal groups of all time, during the 1970s TheStylistics had 12 consecutive R&B Top 10hits, including "Stop, Look, Listen," "You AreEverything," "Betcha By Golly, Wow," "PeopleMake The World Go Round,""I'm Stone in Love with You,""Break Up To Make Up," "YouMake Me Feel Brand New," and more.

The Dramatics: These dashing Detroit singers scoredtwo massive hits with "In theRain" and the mega-funky"Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get."They also scored with “Hey You!Get Off My Mountain,” “Fell ForYou,” and “You're Fooling You.”

Bloodstone: This uniquegroup charted a whopping 13hits from the late ’70s through

the early ’80s; they're best remembered forthe mega-smash “Natural High,” “OutsideWoman,” “My Little Lady,” and “We Go ALong Way Back.

Harold Melvin's Blue Notes: The groupthat made legends of both Melvin and TeddyPendergrass has one of the biggest array ofhits ever by a vocal group, including suchclassics as "If You Don't Know Me By Now," "I Miss You," "The Love I Lost," "Wake UpEverybody," "Bad Luck," "Hope That We CanBe Together Soon," and many more.

The Main Ingredient: In the 1970s, RCARecords only had a handful of hit pop artistssave The Guess Who and Elvis Presley – butCuba Gooding Sr. and The Main Ingredientstormed out of the gates with “EverybodyPlays The Fool,” “Just Don't Want To BeLonely,” “Happiness Is Just Around TheBend,” and more.

Who: Kirsten Maxwell, a young Huntington-based folk singer/songwriter, is offto a fast start in her career: The young star was named a winner of The 2016South Florida Folk Festival Singer-Songwriter Competition after showcasing hertalents along with 12 other finalists during the annual festival in Fort Lauderdaleon January 16. As one of three winners, Maxwell received a cash prize, and hasbeen invited to perform on the Festival’s main stage next January.

This is just the latest in a series of accolades that the versatile 23 year-oldvocalist, guitarist, and songwriter has received in recent months. During 2015,Maxwell was the first-place winner in a contest sponsored by The Rhode IslandSongwriters Association (RISA), and opened a concert for Michael Johnson(“Bluer Than Blue”). She also earned a slot in The Suzi Wollenberg Folk DJShowcase at the 2015 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) Conference inKerhonkson. In November, Maxwell performed at Cinema Arts Centre’s SkyRoom in Huntington. More recently,Maxwell performed at The Huntington Public Library, and shared abill with Cathy Kreger at The Our TimesCoffeehouse at the Ethical HumanistSociety of Long Island in Garden City.

Maxwell’s voice has drawn compar-isons to the likes of Joan Baez, JudyCollins, and Joni Mitchell, and is evocative of the 1960s folk scene.

“I never thought I’d ever hear a voiceas angelic and mesmerizing as I didwhen I first started listening to JoanBaez some 50 years ago, but then Iheard the voice, the songs, andmelodies of Kirsten Maxwell,” said JonStein, host of “Hootenanny Café” onWTBQ-FM in Orange County.

Last year, Maxwell independently released her debut album, Crimson, and iscurrently promoting it to folk and other radio programmers across the country andbeyond. The album was produced by Maxwell and Fred Guarino of TikiRecording Studios in Glen Cove. Much is upcoming for Maxwell: John Platt, hostof “Sunday Supper” on WFUV 90.7 FM in the Bronx, will feature Maxwell on hismonthly “On Your Radar” showcase at Rockwood Music Hall on Manhattan’sLower East Side tonight (March 8.) Other upcoming area appearances includeThe Song Box house concert series in Seaford on Saturday, April 30 (co-billedwith Annie Mark, another Huntington area performer), and The Eclectic Café inBay Shore on Saturday, May 14 on a bill with Rachael Kilgour and Matt Nakoa.

“It is exciting to return to your home town after college and connect with it in anew way,” said Maxwell. “My days at Huntington High School were some of thebest, but I did not identify with the community until I found the folk music sceneon Long Island. The musical community here is powerful, and fellow musiciansand music lovers are the reason I have made it this far doing what I love.”

work bench as well – so it was not asurprise to learn of the new HBOseries "Vinyl," a collaboaration fromScorsee and Mick Jagger, that features the early 1970s downtownNew York City scene I wasonce part of. Word spreadfast that The New YorkDolls and Max's KansasCity would be two of theearly elements featured inthe series.

This was joyous news;the NYC scene has beendismissed and trivializedfor decades. The biggest victims: Max's and TheDolls. The Rock & Roll HallOf Fame has inducted TheRamones, The Sex Pistols, and otherstars of the era, but The New YorkDolls remain on the outside looking indespite the fact that both TheRamones and The Pistols gave creditto The Dolls for inspiring them tobecome bands in the first place.Clearly, punk as we know it mightnever have existed if not for TheDolls. I remember CBGB honcho HillyKrystal getting a well-deserved inclusion in the Hall; I never hadissues or problems with Hilly or

CBGB – but Max's still has yet to behonoroed. The fact is that CBGBstarted exclusively booking the NYC“scene bands” during the period thatMax's temporarily closed in 1973,changing hands from first ownerMickey Ruskin to Tommy and LauraDean. Max's served as the prototypefor CBGB, having booked The VelvetUnderground, Alice Cooper, TheStooges, Wayne County, and The

New York Dolls. CBGB as we knew it might not have ever happened ifMax's hadn't been there first.

All of those nuggets of truthseemed to be lost to the sands oftime, as MTV News in the ’80s acted as if everything in the punk universe had originated at CBGB.

Now, finally, HBO allows the world to see the dawnof everything: The hardlymentioned Mercer ArtsCenter; a version of The

New York Dolls turning a recordexec's head around; and Max'sKansas City being recognized as the birthplace of the scene. "Vinyl" is not a documentary;

it is an entertainment product thatdetails the journey of a record guy, played by Bobby Cannavale, as herediscovers his love for rock & roll.

Some details in “Vinyl” aren’t historically correct. Iconic figures are used to move the storyline along; Jagger's son, James, plays the lead man for The NastyBits, who are punk a few yearsbefore the punk sound came to pass.As a result, some downtown cellardwellers are moaning over details. Of

course, The Mercerdidn't collapse thenight The Dollsplayed there; thatinfo belongs in adocumentary, not inan entertainmentproduct. However, the good news isthat “Vinyl” willinduce a new breedof fans to “Google”The Dolls, TheMercer, Max's, andeverything else todiscover a worldthey’ve never

known. I was thrilled to get a call from“Vinyl's” casting people who wantedJayne County to make an appearance; they got to us too late, but hopefully they're keeping us inmind for Season Two.

I’m looking forward to everyepisode of “Vinyl,” and I’m thankfulthat Scorsese and Jagger havepicked this time frame and this particular scene to focus on.
