How do I write a summary?

• Sometimes, it’s best to think first about how NOT to write a summary

• On the next few slides, you will see some strategies for summarizing that are NOT successful!

Bad strategy #1: Copy and delete

In this strategy, you just copy a few of the ideas from the text, writing a few sentences and deleting (taking out) a few sentences

Bad strategy #2: Write down everything

In this strategy, you include every single detail and everything that happens from the story in no order just putting down every single idea and it goes on and on and you run out of room because you just keep wri..

Bad strategy #3: Do as little as possible

This creates a very short summary. You just put down one sentence that has very little detail:This story was about a girl and a magical trip.

• In your summary, just include what the author put in the story.

• Do not write your own opinions, like “This was a great book!”

• Do not leave a cliffhanger ending, like “If you want to know what happens, read the book!”

Bad strategy #4: Write a review

So what’s a good strategy?

A good summary of fiction includes:

– Characters– Setting– Important events and details from the plot, in

order– The theme of the story

How long does it have to be?

• Answer: Long enough!• Really, it depends on the story and your

purpose for writing the summary. • If you are given lines for writing a

summary, a good rule of thumb is to try to fill up at least three quarters of the lines.
