Goodwins Music Theory

Andrew Goodwin created a theory to test music videos’ form and conventions .He created 6 generic rules that would apply to a wide range of

music videos of a variety of different genres.

1. A relationship between the lyrics and Visuals will occur; with the visuals can illustrate, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.

2. Music and lyrics will demonstrate characteristics typical of that genre.3. There will be a relationship between the music and the visuals also, this

will amplify, illustrate or contradict the lyrics.4. There will be multiple close ups of main singer/band to fit in with the

demands of the record company to increase sales.5. There is often reference to attractiveness. Good looking people. In

particular voyeuristic treatment of the female body. 6. intertexual references to other media texts are often present

Taio Cruz – Like A Star

As the genre of my music video is rnb , I decided to explore a smiliar genre to apply Goodwins theory to and to see if it proves effective

A relationship between the lyrics and Visuals will occur; with the visuals can illustrate, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics

In the opening hook of the video , taio cruz sings “ She's the only one that I want by my sideShe's the only one that I believe can save my life” the girl in the video appears alone walking in the scene therefore linking the lyrics to the visual.

“She's like a star, like a star, like a star, (ohh baby) “ Throughout the song the light is used to portray star light shing through linking the title of the song in the action throughout.

The lyrics and visuals are used together in the final shot. She's like a star, like a star, like a

star, (ohh baby) the first shot is of the silhouetted woman leaving and then as the

artist looks outside he finds his “star” in the sky. This shows both representations of the star in the video, the physical star and the metaphor.

Music and lyrics will demonstrate characteristics typical of that genre.The rnb genre is shown here is this particular video through the firstly the music. Although the song tempo is slow , the song has a consistent beat that increases at different peaks of the songs. Which is typical of the “Rnb” genre. The lyrics are also typical of the genre as it portrays love and the main character involved in a rough life that he needs saving from.. She's the only one that I want by my side She's the only one that I believe can save my life She makes me wanna be a better man ohh why, She's higher then the sky, the suns and the moon

There will be a relationship between the music and the visuals also, this will amplify, illustrate or contradict the lyrics.

This rule does not apply to this video as the music is not in contrast with the visuals as it portrays a linear storyline therefore cant crosscut scenes to the beat of the music.

There will be multiple close ups of main singer/band to fit in with the demands of the record company to increase sales.

There are close-ups throughout the video of the artist singing directly to the camera

There is also a close-up of the artist singing as the girl looks and touches him with lust shows the intimacy and passion that is represented in this video

A close-up of the artist singing but from a profile view shows that he is singing to the girl and therefore makes his lyrics more personal

The close up of the nude girl helps add sex appeal to the video which would appeal to the male fans of this particular artist. , this could also refer to rule number 5

The final close-up is on the stars in the sky which shows “his star” amongst the other stars possibly implying that everyone out their has their own star.

There is often reference to attractiveness. Good looking people. In particular voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

This is emphasised mostly through the character of the girl as she is beautiful and dresses provocatively in the beginning of the video . Towards the end of the video she is nude which promotes the sex appeal factor of the video.

there is no intertexual references to other media texts in this video
