A Message from Deb …

What does the future want of our young people? How are we going to help them? These were the questions posed at a parent

workshop led by Martin Westwell at Unley Primary on Wednesday 9th November. Parents were involved in a coding task which reinforced the fact that challenges, failure and or not knowing can motivate and generate engagement. He explained how the research is indicating that South Australian students are not good at constructing responses to questions or problems they have never seen before. It is important children have resilience to deal with failure and

learn from it. The learning process occurs throughout the experience and the research is indicating that it is important that we not only assess the product, that the journey is assessed as well. Through conversations about inquiry, thinking hard and navigating, children can experience productive failure and productive struggle. He talked about simple ways this can be promoted at home for example engaging in creativity games, something as simple as board games.

Our focus on personalised learning and investigations supports the development of these learning dispositions. Parents appreciated the opportunity to hear Martin speak. A few parents provided feedback to me about the fact their children are already demonstrating these learning dispositions. Our Partnership plans to offer more workshops like this for parents in 2017.

An important event to acknowledge the Intensive English Language Program 2008-2016

The Student Learning and Well Being Committee, IELP teachers and staff are planning a breakfast to celebrate the IELP contributions to Goodwood Primary over the past 9 years. laugh, especially at the end when the water balloon relay finished and the balloons full of water were thrown around. Our student teacher volleyball game was again a huge success thanks to the staff and students for all their effort. This newsletter has some photos of this successful

week. Thanks to the Student Learning and Well Being Committee, Alex, Somer, staff, other parent volunteers and student leaders who helped make it a success. The purpose of having a week long focus was to encourage everyone to be active at some time throughout the week. What would be great is if we could continue to walk or ride to school?? If you live a little far from school why not park your car a kilometre from school and walk to school???

2017 Reception children connecting with Goodwood

It was a pleasure to meet with parents of our new reception children over an informal morning tea last Wednesday and Thursday. Many thanks goes to Sophie, Paula and Elise, current reception parents, who came along and shared their experiences of being parents of new reception children starting school this year.

Building work happening across the school As you know an area of the north unit is currently being

redeveloped. We have had a couple of site meetings and the rooms are looking great. During the school holidays the toilets and bathroom will be redeveloped in the preschool. More information about this work will be provided closer to the time.

Thank you morning tea and sports assembly It is important to acknowledge all the wonderful work of our volunteers throughout the year. One way we do this is by having a thank you morning tea after our Sports Assembly. This year our Sports assembly is Friday 9th December at 9:30am in the gym and the thank you

morning tea will be at 10:40am in the Performing Arts Centre. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible attend the thank you morning tea.

Christmas Feeling Christmas Hamper Thank you for your donations towards our Christmas Hampers. Tickets will be on sale this week and next, before school and at recess time under the Plane trees. They will also be on sale the night of the concert in the foyer of the Capri Cinema. Tickets Cost: $2.00

Goodwood Road You may have noticed the lights on our tree out the front of the school. This is courtesy of the Goodwood Traders. Christmas is not far away... Soon we will have a Christmas tree out the front of the Gym (church) facing Goodwood Road. The school is organising this.

Kind regards Deborah Brassington Principal

Remembrance Day Ceremony

On Friday 11th of November we had a Remembrance

Day Service to remember our service men and women, both past and present, who have dedicated their lives to our freedom, protection and future. The year 7 Ambassadors did a wonderful job leading our school through the service. Mari read us the poem “Flanders Field,” Tahlia read us the Ode and reminded us of the importance of not forgetting those who have fallen. We listened to the Last Post, The Rouse and Helen laid a beautiful wreath that she and Mari had made. We respectfully had a minute silence and watched our flags

as they were raised to full mast. Bronson Horan, one of our parents, shared a moving talk with us about what Remembrance Day meant to him. We often tend to focus on those in the past who have fought for our country, it was a powerful reminder of the men and women and their families who are continuing to make sacrifices to serve our country. Thank you to all those involved. Thank you Marella Hannaford Teacher Appreciation Afternoon Tea

On Friday 11th November the Unley Baha'i community and the virtues class / junior youth group hosted an Appreciation Afternoon Tea in the PAC which was such a great acknowledgment of our work. This event reminded us about the difference staff at Goodwood Primary make to the lives of children and families. I have never been to anything quite like it. The staff would like to thank all involved for their work. Thanks Carrie Kingsborough

Outdoor Adventure for the Year 7s at Glenhaven Park In Week 3, we went on camp to Glenhaven Park near Gawler. The camp was an outdoor adventure experience that physically and mentally challenged us. We put ourselves out of our comfort zones and worked towards personal challenge and achievement. Supporting and encouraging others to challenge themselves and overcome fears was the theme of the camp.

Our program consisted of some amazing activities like exploring the Light River on the river hike, challenging ourselves on the high and low ropes courses, team building during problem solving initiative tasks and testing ourselves by taking the ‘Leap of Faith’. A highlight on our last day was being hoisted up and then released from the ‘giant swing’! We loved spending time outside exploring the natural bush environment. Sometimes it seemed like we were a world away from the city! Big thanks to Doug, Tim and Catherine for joining us on our camp. We appreciate the time they spent with us.

Campfire The scorching campfire in front of us lit up the campground as the sky turned pitch-black. The traumatising ghost stories then started…

As we became cosy around the campfire, laughter and friendly chats like chirping birds spread around the campsite. The feeling of excitement within every kid built up as Ms Toole opened an enormous packet of marshmallows. Through the moonlight, we could see sparks rising from the campfire. It was a memorable part of our camp. Methasha, Helen and Wendy

Food

Ding, Ding, Ding! The bell rang everytime it was mealtime. We sat and waited to eat the delicious food. The camp cook served the most delicious lasagne with a melted cheese top with garlic bread. We were always fed amazing meals and snacks. Zunaid, Shigen and Sam Giant Swing As we stared up at the enormous swing that the first participant was about to experience, our hearts started to sink. It was nearly my turn……my mouth started to water. I was heaved up to the top of the enormous swing, ten metres in the air! I was unleashed, dropping to the ground, then flying faster than the speed of light, flashing past all the horrified Year 7s and then gradually swinging back down.

Zach, Oscar, Brett and Marley

High Ropes Adrenaline rushes to every part of my trembling body as I climb the 10m wooden pole. I curse under my breath as the pole shakes. Taking a deep breath, I force myself to keep climbing the small rungs. I reach the small, black platform and face the long wire course. I latch onto the top wire and plant my feet

on the bottom wire and started shuffling along the tough wire cable. The wire wobbles as I step onto it, causing me to steady my breathing and stop for a minute. I’ve done it! Cheol-Ho, Saxon and Kye

Initiatives We took part in a range of tasks to promote leadership, teamwork and, most importantly, communication. One task

involved us threading ‘Onzlo’ the enormous rope through a spiderweb maze between trees. After what felt like thousands of mistakes and cries of frustration, we finally managed to complete the challenge. Emma, Zoe and Haneulle

The year 7 class certainly had a number of challenges during their camp. To promote a Growth Mind Set we encourage children to embrace challenges as an important part of the learning process. Problem solving and allowing them to be stuck and frustrated is a valid part of learning. Camps often provide these kinds of experiences.

Instructors We could not have challenged ourselves the way we did on camp, if it was not for the supportive and encouraging instructors. The main instructor, Kevin, has worked at Glenhaven Park for 14 years. He is very experienced in ropes, courses and outdoor activities. His energetic passion kept us going when we felt scared and frightened about the challenges that lay ahead. Abbey and Tahlia

Leap of Faith As I look down, the

ground looks even further away than I remembered it to be. My legs are dangerously shaking at the prospect of having to leap off this 10 metre pole - right now, it looks about 30m. Shuffling my feet forward on the plate-sized top of the pole, I teeter. Paralysed, I hear a faint echo of voices carried by the wind. Closing my eyes, I tilt my head up. Small droplets of water dance on my face. I realize I have to jump soon, but courage has left me. Taking a deep breath, I leap, extending my stiff arms in hope of reaching the trapeze. Adrenalin still courses through my body as the instructor releases me from my harness. I have overcome my fear of heights…until next time. Nikki and Tashfia

Low ropes I was desperate. I reached my exhausted arm as far as it could go. ‘A little bit further, a little…’ Slip!

“Arghhh!” I screamed in outrage. I had done it again, for at least the millionth time! Every attempt, on exactly the last rope on the jungle vines, the rope would slip from my grasp, making me collapse onto a push-off from one of the 2 spotters. I dragged myself up onto the thin wire, anxiously hoping that I would get somewhere this time. ‘One more chance’ I told myself, taking an extra-long stretch. I shifted all my weight to the last step and lunged towards the last dangling rope of

hope with reluctance. This time recklessly, but with more determination. With sweaty palms, I held onto what seemed like the same vine with all my strength, realising that I had finally done it. I had successfully reached the last rope.

Mia, Mari and Ayesha Nature Watch As I sprint through the long, dry grass trying to get away from the frantic chaser, I soon realise that I have nature watch. I run straight to the dining room and clip the cheap microscopes to the i-Pads. Snap! Snap! I take lots of interesting close ups of lots of fascinating things. The deafening screams from the Giant Swing fill the air, as we take close up pictures of a live scorpion. It

was amazing to see leaves and flowers close up. Zac, Toby and Oscar River Hike We took off on our adventurous hike by walking past the manager’s little cottage, onto someone else’s property towards the fast-flowing river. We walked along a track, past cliffs and

along the riverbank. Once we were down at the water, we skipped rocks. Ethan held the record for most skips – he got 12! Next, we had to cross the river. We made bridges out of rocks and tyres. Doug, with our instructor Kevin, held a rope so we had something to hold onto. Once across, we climbed on to the vertical riverbank, climbing sideways and cutting our hands and legs. We finally

got to the top! Ethan was the first person to fall into the river. His hands and legs had suddenly slipped. Blake and Oscar helped people out of the riverbank. Blake, Ethan and Xavier

Walking and cycling to school What do you think?

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure’s Way2Go program promotes safer, greener and more active

travel.

The Way2Go program is undertaking a research project exploring the impact of parent attitudes and perceptions on

their child travelling actively to and from school. The results will inform our ongoing work with schools and families. We

would like to talk about how your child travels to school and any advice you may have about children walking or cycling

to school.

Every response goes in the draw for one of three $300 gift vouchers for your school from a sports or equipment

supplier.
