Google & Porter's Three Generic Strategies for a New Market

Google's first form of differentiation was their artificial intelligence used in their search engine. It helped the company beat out Lycos, AOL, Yahoo, and Ask in this area.

Obviously, Cost Leadership wasn't a factor on the Internet. Google also went after Market Segmentation with a cleaner design. Plus they had that novel "I feel lucky" button that everyone wanted to try (and then stopped using). But sometimes all you need is a little buzz around a novel feature. Similarly, Nintendo wanted to revitalize videogames after Atari killed the genre. So they released the NES with the ROB (Robotic Operating Buddy). Essentially, it was a robot that acted as a controller. They knew that it would only last a few games, but it turned a lot of heads and sold a lot of units. It helped Nintendo's momentum.

Back to Google. They then kept right on improving their search logic and coming up with new features to apply it to (images, video, news, translation, etc.). That also led to Google Maps (see that post) and G-Mail. So Google's differentiation strategy grew like wildfire (plus with wins like acquiring Blogger and YouTube), which is what keeps them on top
