Google Search Overview

• Started by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in January 1998 as a

research project originally nicknamed as ‘BackRub’.

• Search engine Market share as of March 2013: 67.1%(Source: comScore Explicit Core Search Share Report).

• Introduced a fast paced learning culture by helping users find

what they want; quickly!

• Larry Page once described the ‘perfect search engine’ as

something that ‘understands exactly what you mean and gives

you back exactly what you want’.

3

Size of Google Search!• The World Wide Web is

increasing at an enormous

rate.

• The number of webpages

crawled by Google Index

increased from 35 billion

to 47 billion (estimated) in

the past 2 years.

4

Problem Statement• Getting the right search results

is becoming more important as

users are getting more focused

on the quality of results shown

than the quantity.

• If the user is not able to find his

results, he will simply change

his keywords rather than

continue to scroll through the

search results.Source: Slingshot SEO Study (July-2012)

Page 5: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

5

Problem Statement• A search for ‘celebrity

news’ returns about

1,220,000,000 results in

0.33 seconds.

• There is no doubt that the

search time for Google is

the fastest out there, but in

reality, are we going to

see that many pages!

Page 6: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

6

Problem Statement

• The Page Rank system works brilliantly by ranking all of the web-pages for

specific keywords but, the search results are enormous for very commonly

used keywords and the user doesn’t have any control on what he would like

to see first.

• The user is more dependent on the content providers to provide him with

better content for his search query.

• The search results are always across multiple domains and there is no

simple way to search across a specific domain such as design, finance,

technology, etc.

Page 7: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

7

Sample Scenario• Consider, I am a follower of

www.justjared.com

• This website shows up on

Page 2 for the keywords

‘Celebrity News’.

• For me, the search results

are a little irrelevant as it

doesn’t show me the

websites where I usually

look for content / news.

Page 8: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

8

Sample Scenario• Due to increase in use of mobile

technology, the users are looking for

more accurate and focused search

results; since there is limited real

estate available on mobile devices

such as smartphones, tablets, etc.

• As seen here, only 2 results show-up

for a search using Google Search(as viewed on Samsung Galaxy S2 Chrome

browser ver. 26.0.1410.58).

• There is no easy way to filter the

search results as per the user’s liking.

Page 9: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

9

Solution

• A system which can provide the users to select and search through

the websites that he wants.

• The user can then select his own set of websites and only look for

results from those websites; which he trusts the content from.

• If the user is still not sure what he is looking for, he always has the

option to simply use the Global Google Search to crawl through

everything that Google has to offer.

Page 10: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

10

Solutions by Google!• Google provides a

Keyword based approach

to search through multiple

websites.

• Every time I have to

search through multiple

websites, I have to input

my search string in the

format as shown.

Page 11: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

11

Solutions by Google!• A good example where

Google applies the concept

of returning domain specific

search results is ‘Google

News’.

• The results span through

multiple websites looking

only for news related

articles.

• But still, I rely on Google to

select the website domains.

Page 12: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

12

• I had like to call this solution as: ‘Project Border’ which simply implies

creating Borders across the search results OR defining the limits for your

search area.

• The user can create a Border which is nothing but a group of websites very

specific to his search domain.

• He can then use his Borders to search for his queries only with the limits /

websites decided by the user himself.

Solution Proposal

Page 13: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

13

Sample Scenario

• I want to search for a new startup called ‘AmitVerse’ only on the following

websites, which I trust:

Techcrunch, Engadget, Gizmodo

• I will create a Border called ‘Technology’, add the above websites in this

border and while searching, will simply type:

AmitVerse border:Technology

• The above string will show me results for AmitVerse only from the selected

websites, viz. Techcrunch, Engadget and Gizmodo.

Page 14: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

14

Sample Scenario (conti…)

• Using Google Search,

users can add single or

multiple website domains

to their saved Borders.

• This will save the users

from typing long strings in

the search box every time

they want to search

multiple websites at once.

Page 15: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

15

Border Add-ons

• The user can save his Borders by

linking them with his Google account.

• The user can use his Borders

anywhere, as long as he is signed-in

to his Google account.

Alternatively, he can also save Borders them on his local machine with the

help of an extension with the Google Chrome Browser which would then

only be available on the machine where he saves them.

Page 16: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

16

Visual Aid Google Border = Sky

Borders of Amit = Cloud

One cloud = One user

Border of Technology, Finance

and Design = Individual Vapors

• As our sky has infinite number

of clouds, Google Border can

have infinite number of users.

• As a cloud can have infinite

Vapors, each Google User can

have infinite Borders.

Page 17: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

17

Border Community

• Google can provide suggestions,

references on which sites to include by

having a preset collection of Borders.

• Within the community, users can:

Share Borders

Rate Borders

Write Reviews for Borders

Help create a Open Border Market!

Page 18: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

18

Advantages of Google Border

• Focused search would reduce the time

required to search a high quality result.

• Provide instant and accurate search

results, in a fast-paced environment where

time is of utmost importance.

• Reduced number of SPAM hits! – As a

Border can only contain the websites

selected by the user.

Page 19: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

19

Advantages of Google Border

• Would force the website owners /

creators to improve their content so

that they can be included in the

highest rated Borders for that

particular domain – User Wins!

• Would help engage the users more

in using Google as their primary

source of search engine for any of

their needs – Google Wins!

Page 20: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

20

To the future – Project Glass

• I see Project Glass by Google as the biggest

technological advancement that would be

made available to the public after Star Wars!

• Wearing these glasses, users would be

looking for more faster / accurate results while

driving, walking their dogs, relaxing on their

couch, etc.

• Combining Project Border with Google Search,

users can search for more focused and

specific results in a blink!

Page 21: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

21

• Planetary Resources, the way I see it, is

the most ambitious project ever!

• In the not so distant future, users on

Earth would be looking for accurate

information about many asteroids.

• Combining Project Border with Google

Search, would help users search

seamlessly for a group of asteroids /

planets / stars and probably even

Galaxies; all in a blink!

To the future– Planetary Resources

Page 22: Google Whitepaper - Project Border

22

A feature that groups well,

can be the future that serves well,

and can be the culture that grows well!

Based on the Borders concept, many more concepts

can be derived… This is just the beginning!
