Zone Swimming Carnival

Best of luck to the students who qualified at the Small Schools carnival for the Zone swimming carnival at Griffith on Thursday 28 February. From all accounts, students swam their best and can be proud of their efforts. Thank you to Miss Sim, Mrs Liddicoat and Miss Gordon for their organization and assistance at the carnival.

Tom Curtain Speak up against Bullying

On Tuesday 26 February as part of his Speak Up tour, Tom Curtain will visit the school to speak to the students about bullying and its effects. Goolgowi will be joined by Carrathool and Rankins Springs’ students. They are busy learning the words of his song ‘Speak Up’. It was inspired by a drawing by Dolly that included the words “Speak even if your voice shakes”.

Whole School Parent Information Session

The staff will be presenting a parent information session on Tuesday 5 March at 6pm where the school’s expectations and class routines will be outlined. Each teacher will give a brief outline of the expectations in their classroom and I will present the school’s Wellbeing policy. This is a chance for parents and carers to ask questions and become more informed about the school. The session will be followed by the P&C meeting.

Thank You

Thank you to Allana, Mitch, Jewel and Austin Shaw who helped remove 3 trailer loads of rocks on Sunday and for a lend of their tipping trailer which made the job of unloading so much easier. Their assistance was greatly appreciated.

and Coding program and this year, we are raising funds to purchase 10 iPads, a fileserver to manage them and a subscription to ZuluDesk to download apps. I understand that the drought has had a huge impact on the community but if you have friends, family, clients or businesses who would like to donate to our worthy cause, please ask them to go to the following website: https://www.schoolsplus.org.au/robotics-coding-goolgowi-ps/ . It is great to see the improvement in student engagement as part of this program.

K/1/2 News

I’ll eat you up! I love you so!

The wild things in K/1/2 have been exploring ‘Where The Wild Things Are’. They have taken their wild rumpus into the playground to swing from the equipment and develop their gross motor skills with an obstacle course.

They have measured their height using string and paddle pop sticks. We have a range of 9-12 paddle pop sticks tall. Miss Sim is 9 whiteboards tall.

Miss Sim

3/4 News

This week students will continue writing their own imaginative stories and will begin to edit their stories. We are writing our whole class story using features of Roald Dahl from his texts ‘James and the Giant Peach’ and ‘The BFG’. Small group reading sessions will begin this week. Students will be developing explicit reading and comprehension skills while reading.

Term 1, Week 5 Tuesday 26 February 2019

During maths activities students will be comparing the size of numbers and continue looking at the value of each digit in numbers up to 4-digits. We will be focusing on multiples of 4 this week during our maths games. In geometry, 3/4 will revise the 2D shapes and their properties.

5/6 News

I am very impressed with the Year 5/6 students’ effort, participation and resilience so far this year. They are eagerly accepting every learning challenge I am presenting to them.

We are continuing to study the text ‘Fire’ by Jackie French. This week we are looking at the power of illustrations to communicate complex ideas not written in the text. We are also taking a closer look at the imagery Jackie French uses in the text.

In maths, our focus is addition and subtraction. We are learning to select and apply efficient mental, written and calculator strategies to solve word problems and record the strategy used.

The school is currently borrowing Lego WeDo kits from the DET StemShare library. The students have a task this week to make an Aussie bushfire robot that needs to be strong, stable, and able to move through a stimulated bush environment in the playground.

Jo Henwood Visit

On Friday 22 February, Goolgowi Public School had an interesting and sometimes hilarious storyteller called Jo Henwood visit. She shared with the students true stories about real people’s experiences of being on the First Fleet. Some students were lucky enough to be included as characters in her stories. She was passionate in her delivery and loved to share her tales. She also spoke about Australia’s Aboriginal history and our French connections. The students learnt the importance of using expression when telling or reading stories.

Thank you to the Carrathool Shire library for organising this event for the students.

Griffith Small Schools Swimming

Seventeen excited students from Goolgowi eagerly participated in our first ever Griffith Small Schools swimming carnival last Thursday. We had a very successful day, with many students placing in the top three, in the various swimming events and receiving a ribbon for their fantastic efforts. Congratulations to Charlotte, who was awarded Junior Girl Champion on the day. All of the students did a wonderful job at competing and representing Goolgowi Public School.

George, Austin, Charlotte, Jewel and Dustin were successful in swimming qualifying times for the zone carnival and will compete in Griffith this Thursday. Our PP5 Small School’s relay team was also successful on day and they will progress directly to the Riverina carnival.
