Part 2. Story continued from November: The shepherds wanted to go and see
the baby. When they arrived at the stable, they were filled with joy at seeing
Jesus lying in the manger. They knelt down and worshipped Him.
They told Mary and Joseph
how the angel had appeared in
the sky and told them that Je-
sus was to be the Saviour of
the world.
Far away in the East, Wise
Men saw a new star shining
high in the sky. These men
studied the stars and they
knew this was a very special
star. They studied their scrolls where it said that whenever a bright new star
appeared it meant that a great ruler had been born.
The Wise Men decided to find this new ruler. They went to Jerusalem to see
King Herod, as they thought the baby would be in the palace. They asked to
see the child that would be King of the Jews. The king was troubled. He
thought this new king may take away his throne. He told them to return when
they had found the baby so that he could worship the child himself.
‘Carols in the Bush’
Assisted by Nancy Hawkins ~ www.theworldinharmony.com
The Wise Men set off to find the baby. They were guided by the star to the
stable in Bethlehem. Here they knelt down and worshipped Jesus. They gave him
gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. That night, the men had the same dream
where an angel warned them that King Herod wanted to kill Jesus and told them
not to go back to his palace.
The Wise Men went back to their own country without calling to see Herod.
Soon after Joseph had a dream where an angel told him to take Mary and Jesus
to Egypt as King Herod had ordered that Jesus be killed.
They left Bethlehem right away. When the wise men did not return, Herod or-
dered that baby boys in Bethlehem be killed. They did not find Jesus as he was
safe.

Reindeer Candy Canes
Christmas is almost upon us and the kids are getting enthusiastic about decorating and making gifts. They really love to give gifts, especially things they have made. Last year, we tried out some Reindeer Candy Canes. This was nice and easy for them to make and we turned out a batch for the kids in the girls’ class at school. As you can probably see, you need: candy canes, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, dou-ble-sided tape and some small red stickers (or small red pom poms). Bend your pipe cleaner in half and twist it onto the hook of the cane. Do this carefully unless you want to eat some broken candy canes J Stick the googly eyes on with a little double-sided tape and add the red sticker for the nose. Now stand back and see how silly they look staring up at you and enjoy your Christmas festivities. J

GOORNONG COMMUNITY SWIMMING POOL NEWS Opening of Pool: The Pool will be opening at 2pm on Saturday 10th December. Later in the day we will be holding a family BBQ to celebrate the start of the season. We will be using our new built in BBQ and picnic seating from a Grant we received last year. You can purchase a sausage and, if you wish, bring your own salad to go with it!! AGM: Our AGM was held last week. Due to a great response from the community, we have been able to fill all positions. We have a fantastic and committed team this year and we would like to thank all those who have taken on the various roles. However, we still require active participation from the community to open the kiosk. As we are a facility that only has one Lifeguard assigned, the kiosk must be manned in case the Lifeguard re-quires assistance. This is a mandatory condition and we cannot open unless there is someone on the kiosk. Swimming Lessons: The last season saw us hold swimming lessons with a private instructor. We will be running them again this year with the same teacher Emily Smith. Emily is a fully qualified instructor and has her Working with Children’s check. The lessons will be held from Monday 16th January to Friday 20th January 2012. Children four and above can participate in the lessons. Sharon Hipwell is co-ordinating the program and you can contact Sharon on 5432 2525 for enrolment forms. The cost is $50 per child and all completed forms and full payment are expected on enrolment.
Next Meeting: We will be holding the next General Meeting on Tuesday 6th December. This is a week earlier than usual so that we can ensure that we are prepared for the opening day. The meeting will be held at 7.30pm at the Rec Reserve and everyone is welcome.
WE ARE SO LUCKY TO HAVE SUCH A LOVELY FACILITY. THANKS GUYS FOR KEEPING IT ALL GOING.

On Sunday 20th November
the brigade hosted a Fire Ready session where guest speakers presented information on raising people’s awareness
about grass and bushfire risk.
There were many valuable hand outs available and displays such as on hay-stack fires and grass fires. Across the state fire stations were also opened for
CFA Sunday where the community could visit the station to meet the volun-teers who put their time and effort into trying to protect the town from the
threat of fires.
A BBQ lunch was made available.
Thank you to the ONE community member who turned up. Your support for the brigade was appreciated.
Remember !
Being Fire Ready may save your property and more importantly, save your life.

RELEASES
IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK
A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS
Christmas decorations are beginning to appear through-
out the City of Greater Bendigo to herald the arrival of
the festive season.
City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Rod Fyffe said as
always, parts of the municipality will be decorated to
celebrate Christmas and encourage residents and local
businesses to get into the Christmas spirit.
“This year there will be decorations on light poles in
View Street, Mitchell Street, Charing Cross and the
Golden Square, Kangaroo Flat, Eaglehawk, Elmore and
Heathcote shopping centers.
“There will also be decorations in the Hargreaves Mall,
on the front of the City of Greater Bendigo Council
offices in Lyttleton Terrace and the Bendigo and Eagle-
hawk Town Halls.
“This year we have also purchased some new decora-
tions for Kangaroo Flat, Eaglehawk and Heathcote.
“Kangaroo Flat will have a new Christmas scene in-
stalled on the roof of a building at the High Street,
Lockwood Road traffic lights. There will also be a simi-
lar scene installed on the roof the Heathcote Visitor
Information Centre.
“We have also purchased some new Christmas banners
which will be installed in the Eaglehawk Shopping Cen-
tre,” said Cr Fyffe.
He said the decorations were in addition to the big
Christmas tree that will be erected at the View Street
entrance to Rosalind Park.
All of the decorations will be installed before the end of
November.
PREPARATIONS WELL UNDERWAY FOR
LIGHTING OF THE
BENDIGO CHRISTMAS TREE
Preparations for the annual lighting of the Downtown
Bendigo Christmas Tree in Rosalind Park on Friday De-
cember 2 are well underway with choirs practicing, en-
tertainers lined up and Santa organised.
City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Rod Fyffe said the
lighting of the Christmas tree has become a very special
annual event for local families from throughout Greater
Bendigo to mark the countdown to Christmas.
“Construction of the Christmas tree will commence
before the end of November in preparation for an
evening of fun, entertainment and all things Christmas.
“On Friday December 2 the festivities will commence
at 6pm with roving entertainment throughout Rosalind
Park and in Sidney Myer Place (next to the Visitor In-
formation Centre) with a range of carnival rides for the
kids in support of the Bendigo Health Foundation.
“Roving entertainment will be provided by local charac-
ters including Bendigo Health’s Bennie and Hellie, the
City of Greater Bendigo’s Goldie the Wonder Dog and
Ben and Jo, the Bendigo Advertiser’s Kooka and Varie-
ty the Children's Charity Heart.
“This year for the first time, Variety the Children's Chari-
ty will bring the Santa Fun Run to Bendigo with a 3km
walk/run within Rosalind Park.
“At 7.30pm the stage entertainment with Jonathon Rid-
nell from ABC Central Victoria as compare will com-
mence. There will be performances by Bendigo's own
Alana and Courtney Conway and the Bendigo Primary
School Christmas Choir – a choir that has come to-
gether especially for this event.
“There will also be a very special visit from Santa which
is sure to delight the young and the young at heart and
on dark at about 9pm the lights on the Bendigo Christ-
mas tree will be switched on by the winner of the Ben-
digo Advertiser’s Kooka colouring-in competition.
“It’s shaping up to be a very special night and I’m look-
ing forward to kicking off the countdown to Christmas
with local families and members of the community. I
encourage everyone to bring along a picnic and find a
spot on the grass in Queen Victoria Gardens or
Rosalind Park and enjoy this free family event,” Cr
Fyffe said.
The City of Greater Bendigo is very proud to present
the “Light Up the Sky” event in conjunction with the
Bendigo Advertiser and Bendigo Traders.

CITY SET TO REDUCE
ENERGY CONSUMPTION
The City of Greater Bendigo will strive to reduce its
current energy consumption by 50% over the next ten
years.
Mayor of Greater Bendigo Cr Rod Fyffe said the City
has aligned its corporate greenhouse emissions ac-
counting and reporting system with the National
Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System (NGERS)
P a g e 2 0 G o o r n o n g G u i d e
For more press release, please follow the links from our
website www.goornong.com
and has set a target to reduce the energy used by half
by 2020.
“The City of Greater Bendigo has just released its
2010/11 carbon emissions report which clearly details
all of the City’s greenhouse gas emissions. This is the
first report to be calculated in accordance with the
NGERS - the national carbon accounting standard used
to comply with the Federal government’s reporting.
“The work involved in developing the report has been
very complex given that the City of Greater Bendigo as
an organisation is responsible for delivering a wide
range of services and for managing a huge portfolio of
buildings and facilities and a large fleet of heavy machin-
ery.
“However we are pleased with the progress we are
making because we now understand where most of our
emissions are being generated and this allows us to fo-
cus our efforts on reducing them,” said Cr Fyffe.
He said Council has demonstrated its ongoing commit-
ment to achieving emissions reduction by re-affirming
support for the emissions target of 50% adopted in
2006.
“The task is now a little harder because the 50% re-
duction is relative to the 2010/11 emissions and not the
original 1999 level.
“While accepting a carbon reduction challenge of this
size does commit the City to a level of financial invest-
ment we will make savings in a relatively short
timeframe and this will make it not only an exercise in
reducing carbon but a good business proposition as
well.
“A wide variety of works will be undertaken over the
next few years during routine maintenance and retrofit
programs. Various alternative energy and energy effi-
ciency projects such as the roll out of continued behav-
iour change programs, installation of efficient lighting
systems, improved heating and cooling equipments and
cogeneration, trigeneration and solar panels are cur-
rently being investigated to help the City achieve its
targets
“This is about investing in energy saving infrastructure
and technology to ultimately make financial savings in
the long term. It will provide us with an opportunity to
deliver services to our growing community using less
energy and producing less carbon emissions,” said
Cr Fyffe.
RUBBISH TO BE REMOVED FROM
BENDIGO CREEK
The City of Greater Bendigo, North Central Catch-
ment Management Authority (NCCMA) and the Dja
Dja Wurrung Natural Resource Management Enter-
prise project have joined forces to remove litter
from the stream and the embankment along two
large sections of the Bendigo Creek.
The project will see rubbish removed from the Ben-
digo Creek from Carcoola Drive in Kangaroo Flat
to Maple Street Golden Square and from Bayne
Street to Howard Street Epsom.
City of Greater Bendigo Director of Presentation
and Assets Darren Fuzzard said the scope of the
works is significant and could take up to three
weeks to complete.
“This year the City has received a number of com-
plaints about the amount of litter and debri that has
built up in the Bendigo Creek and we have decided
to carry out a special project in conjunction with
the NCCMA and the Dja Dja Wurrung project to
remove as much of the litter as possible.
“Rubbish accumulates along the creek following
heavy rainfalls but we have also discovered that
some residents who live along the creek are using
the creek reserve for storage of garden and other
waste such as building materials.
“Often the cause of litter is from these items wash-
ing down the creek when it rises following a storm.
“As part of the clean up project we will be asking
residents who have stored material on the creek
reserve to remove it.
“Both the City of Greater Bendigo and NCCMA are
committed to the health of our local waterways and
the clean up will make a significant difference,” said
Mr Fuzzard.
The Dja Dja Wurrung NRM Enterprise project aims
to assist the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal
Corporation (DDWCAC) to establish a commer-
cially viable Natural Resource and Cultural Heritage
Management business, fully owned and operated by
the Corporation. The project is being hosted by the
North Central Catchment Management Authority
on behalf of the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal
Corporation and is funded by the Department of
Justice.
