Year 11 CAP CourseDear Parent / Carer

Your child has been selected to be considered for enrolment in the Year 11, CAP Course for 2013.

What is CAP?

It is the Career Advancement Programme (CAP), which is designed for students who are ready to leave school at the end of year 10, but they must return to school next year, because they :

a) do not have full-time employment of 25 hours or more a week ORb) have not enrolled in another full-time Educational program, such as a TAFE course ANDc) are under 17 years of age.

Students enrolled in the CAP Course have to stay at school for year 11 or until they are 17, and will follow an alternate programme to the HSC Course of study. This course gives them increased employment related skills and if they have completed all trade course competencies, they may be eligible for a Certificate II in Hospitality, Construction or Metals and Engineering – depending on their TAFE accredited course enrolment..

In the last 2 years that we have run this course, nearly all the students have gained employment, traineeships or apprenticeships..

The students are in the same class for every subject and have only two teachers. There is a maximum number of 20 students in the class. In 2012, the school based subjects that students studied were: English Studies, Sport Lifestyle and Recreation, Work Studies and Retail Operations. For this part of the course, the students attend school each Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

The SVET courses are run on Monday and Wednesday afternoons between 2:30pm and 5:30pm. Hospitality is conducted at Northlakes High, Construction is at Wadalba High and Metals and Engineering is at Gorokan High. The cost for this course is $300 and includes all course work and all required safety gear, eg. boots, uniforms. These trade courses are compressed into 1 year, therefore the contribution relates to two years’ worth of work, consumables, etc.

The flexible timetable allows students to work on Monday and Wednesday or seek a traineeship in an appropriate trade area, till their trade course starts. They are expected to complete the trade qualifications at the nominated school from 2.30 – 5.30pm on these days.

The SVET Courses include two compulsory work placements during the year. Many students gain either work and/or apprenticeships from these work placements.

During term 3 we will be holding an information session with regards to the CAP Course, for you and your child to attend.

On the following page is an article from the School newsletter and also a form for you to, sign, cut off and return to the Careers Office to acknowledge the receipt of this letter.

Yours faithfully

Success of the Career Advancement Programat Gorokan HighIt was a privilege for Mrs Thomas, Mrs Pryor and Ms Thompson to attend the Dinner and Awards Night at Kooindah Waters Golf Resort on Thursday the 29th March which was hosted by Job Centre Australia Limited.

As part of the Careers Advancement Program during 2011, the students participated in the Work Studies Course. Mrs Thomas arranged for Warren Manners and Jenny Abourizk, from Job Centre Australia Limited, to work closely with the students. They were able to assist the students to gain suitable Work Experience Placements which, for the majority, led to employment.

Three of the students were able to secure either Traineeships or Apprenticeships and they, along with their parents and Employers, were invited to attend the Awards Presentation Ceremony.

The school is proud to acknowledge these students achievements: Joshua Denning is employed as an Apprentice Cabinet Maker with Coastline Kitchens, Indigo Enkelaar has a Business Traineeship with Stable 8 and Kyro Hallet is employed as an Apprentice Fitter and Turner at Powerhouse Engineering.

Congratulations to each of these students and we wish them the best in their chosen careers.
