Has been a drive-time staple in Central Florida for years. He’s up before the sun, greeting us daily with “rise

and shine God’s people.” Radio personality, “Steve January,” has sent our children off to school with shout outs, has called out to businesses and organizations on weekday mornings, and has made sure that we had our morning prayer and our scripture for the day. “Steve” has transitioned with the media-scape of Central Florida and is now brining us “Joy in the Morning” on Rejoice 1140AM. In a brief interview with GospelNOW, “Steve January” brings us into his day and shares the reason behind the rhythm of his heartbeat for Central Florida.

THe MornInG MotIVator

Many people address you as “Mr. January.” What is your birth name, and how did you come up with the name for the radio?

My Birth name is Steve Currie III, I was born January 15, the same as Dr. King. My oldest daughter was born the day before me, and I reconnected with Christ in January. That’s how I came up with Steve January.

We have consistently heard you on the air for years. Tell us a little about where you’ve come from in terms of where you started in radio and media.

I started at WOKB 1600AM, Tiger radio doing a junior jock program in 1974. I reported high school football and basketball games with Lee Sharp (Daddy Cool) in the Mornings. After graduating from Edgewater High in 1977, I attended Santa Rosa Jr. College in California on a small football scholarship. I played for one year and decided to pursue my Mortuary and Broadcasting Career. While in Mortuary school, I worked part-time at KDIA Radio in Oakland, CA. Later (1979), I was offered a

7pm-12 [midnight] air shift; which was a big break for me, especially in California in the Bay area. I was later offered another job at KSOL, the [number one] FM [station] in the Bay area, working overnights in the winter of 1979 until 1981. I moved back to Orlando and worked for WORL [from] 1983 until 1989. [From] 1991 to 1993 [I worked at] WKKO in Brevard County, [and from] 1994 to 2010 at WOKB. I credit my broadcasting career to Alvin John Waples, Doug Banks, Maxwell Saintclair, and the Night Bird. (Bishop L.T. Weaver, Sr. and Jr. from Brevard County inspired me in Gospel Radio.)

It is obvious to your listeners that you have a passion for youth and the community, to the point where a foundation has been established. What was the motivation behind the birth of “The Steve January Foundation?

Remembering my godfather Willie J. Bruton, a respected Mortician in Orlando, he always said give back to the young people and support education. I love young people. Every

Wednesday I recognize a young person in the community. The foundation also helps with local schools.

You could be anyplace in the world, what keeps you grounded in Central Florida?

God. I tried leaving Orlando to work in other markets; every time, something would change to make me stay. That’s God’s way of saying my work isn’t fi nished in Orlando. I was born here.

We know that you are the morning drive host on Rejoice 1140AM; what else is involved in the daily grind of “Steve January?

I’m presently on the Black Advisory Board at Valencia Community College, Chairman of Orange County PTA Men’s involvement, President of West Oaks Elementary School PTA, President Of All-N-One Media Group, and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Steve January Foundation. My wife and I oversee the Marriage Ministry at our church, The Faith Center International, Pastor Alexis Freeman.

As a positive role model in the community for years, what message are you deliberately conveying to the people that you come in contact with?

Trust in God and follow your dreams. We all have gifts that God has blessed us with; use your gift.“Steve January” is a married, father of four children, ages 5 to 29 and two grandchildren. Steve and his wife Shannon share in ministry together as Marriage Ministry leaders at The Faith Center International, where Alexis Freeman is the Pastor. He is a proud 51 year-old Orlando native with more than 30 years of broadcast experience.

“Steve January” may be contacted at 1003 S. Kirkman Road, Suite 201, Orlando, Florida 32811.

Phone (407) 296-9698.

UNFC Walk For EducationThe Central Florida Annual UNCF 5K Run/Walk for Education attracts hundreds of walkers and runners each year for an opportunity to help change the lives of deserving college students. The 3rd annual walk on a chilly November morning brought together Corporate sponsors, community organizations, friends and families, circling the Mall at Millenia, while raising dollars for scholarships to support the academic efforts of qualifi ed, aspiring college students. Local vendors and organizations provided product samples and gifts to walk participants and supporters. The collaborative project directly benefi ts students from the state of Florida, as seventy-fi ve percent of the funds raised remains with our three Florida UNCF member institutions. The UNCF’s role is paramount in that 55,000 students annually, are able to obtain degrees while operational support is also provided to the 39 member Historically Black Colleges and Universities throughout the country.

The Darrell Armstrong Foundation for Premature Babies, Inc. Child Development Center at the Florida Children’s Hospital serves the needs

of premature babies that suffer from developmental problems. Premature birth can contribute to developmental, physical, social, learning, sensory and behavioral concerns throughout childhood and adolescence. If these concerns are not promptly and adequately addressed, a child can be misdiagnosed leading to frustration, negative behaviors and life-long disability.

Our highly trained care team of neonatal/pediatric specialists evaluates each infant/child who was born prematurely and is in need of intervention services. This multidisciplinary team determines the cause of the presenting problems and, along with the family, develops an individualized intervention plan.

The core team of care professionals may include a Developmental Pediatrician, Neuropsychologist, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, and Speech-

Language Pathologist. After the care team evaluation, the Child Development Center’s Clinical Coordinator will prepare a summary of the evaluation results and will follow up with the family to assist with any problems

during the intervention plan implementation.

Darrell’s vision is to provide quality child development services to premature babies and the needed education to their parents. We strive to provide each child we treat with the resources to achieve quality of life regardless of the level of their condition.

Darrell’s dream cannot be reality without the support of our Central Florida Community. This is why we need community leaders involved with our mission to help spread the word and help raise the funds necessary to provide these much needed services.

We Appreciate Your Support! If you would like to make a contribution to the

operations of the Darrell Armstrong Foundation For Premature Babies, you may send a check or money order made payable to Darrell Armstrong Foundation For Premature Babies. Checks and money orders should be mailed to:

However, while many are sitting around warm fi res celebrating the season, there are those to whom this season brings sadness and hurt.

Everyone doesn't have a home nor a friend with an open heart. For those, this season can seem daunting and unkind. While others are full of glee and frivolity, they are sad and feel alone.

Singles often struggle with the holiday season. They have no spouse to cuddle up next to or children to pamper and shower with love and affection. For a season that celebrates all things familial, this season can be trying.

The global economic downturn has also caused many to view the upcoming Christmas season with sadness. Retailers are feeling the crunch as shoppers without jobs or those with jobs and much less disposable income, tighten their purse strings and reevaluate their current situation and lifestyle.

This is exactly what the Body of Christ needs to do - reevaluate. For decades we seem to have allowed secular society to dictate our celebration of the season. We allowed Christmas to go commercial. The marketplace took down our Nativity scenes and erected Santa and Frosty the Snowman. Our children under 20

barely know a "true" Christmas carol. Instead, they are "Dashing through the snow."

Christmas is a time we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; the One who left His glorious throne in Heaven to redeem us; the One without whom none of us would be alive.

This celebration is to and for HIM - not us. It is a season where God demonstrated His incredible love toward us. Are we more concerned about what we will give to others without ever considering what we will offer to Him in appreciation for His gift to us?

This season, let's celebrate the season in a way that exemplifi es God's heart and actions toward us. Let's give the gift of love. Why not invite that lonely single into your warm family of love? Help that single mother with her child. Feed the homeless and hungry. Let's make God proud of what we do this season. Instead of shopping until you drop, let us mirror our Father's actions and do exactly what He did this season over 2,000 years ago. Let's give love - to our neighbors, to families, to our communi ty, to the world. Let's show the world how Christians celebrate the season. Let's love!

The Christmas holidays are such a magical time of year. Strangers greet one another and passersby smile for no apparent reason. The joy is tangibly electric and contagious. Families reconnect and friends gather to celebrate the birth of the Majesty on high.... Jesus! It's as if the entire planet lights up at the very remembrance of Jesus' entrance to earth as our most precious gift.

Acknowledge your feelings. If someone close to you has recently died or you can't be with loved ones,

realize that it's normal to feel sadness and grief. It's OK to take time to cry or express your feelings. You can't force yourself to be happy just because it's the holiday season.

Reach out. If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other social events. They

can offer support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships.

Be realistic. The holidays don't have to be perfect or just like last year. As families change and grow,

traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose a few to hold on to, and be open to creating new ones. For example, if your adult children can't come to your house, fi nd new ways to celebrate together, such as sharing pictures, emails or videotapes.

Set aside differences. Try to accept family members and friends as they are, even if they don't live up

to all your expectations. Set aside grievances until a more appropriate time for discussion. And be understanding if others get upset or distressed when something goes awry. Chances are they're feeling the effects of holiday stress and depression too.

Stick to a budget. Before you go gift and food shopping, decide how much money you can afford

to spend. Then stick to your budget. Don't try to buy happiness with an avalanche of gifts. Try these alternatives: Donate to a charity in someone's name, give homemade gifts or start a family gift exchange.

Plan ahead. Set aside specifi c days for shopping, baking, visiting friends and other activities. Plan

The holiday season, which begins for most Americans with Thanksgiving and continues through New Year's Day, often brings unwelcome guests — stress and depression. And it's no wonder. In an effort to pull off a perfect holiday, you might fi nd yourself facing a dizzying array of demands — parties, shopping, baking, cleaning and entertaining, to name a few.

When stress is at its peak, it's hard to stop and regroup. Try to prevent stress and depression in the fi rst place, especially if the holidays have taken an emotional toll on you in the past.

Don't let the holidays become something you dread. Instead, take steps to prevent the stress and depression that can descend during the holidays. With a little planning and some positive thinking, you may fi nd that you enjoy the holidays this year more than you thought you could.

-10 Tips from the Mayo Clinic

Friends and colleagues will understand if you can't participate in every project or activity. If it's not possible to say no when your boss asks you to work overtime, try to remove something else from your agenda to make up for the lost time.

Don't abandon healthy habits. Don't let the holidays become a free-for-all. Overindulgence only adds to

your stress and guilt. Have a healthy snack before holiday parties so that you don't go overboard on sweets, cheese or drinks. Continue to get plenty of sleep and physical activity.

Take a breather. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions,

may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do. Take a walk at night and stargaze. Listen to soothing music. Find something that reduces stress by clearing your mind, slowing your breathing and restoring inner calm.

Seek professional help if you need it. Despite your best efforts, you may fi nd yourself feeling

persistently sad or anxious, plagued by physical complaints, unable to sleep, irritable and hopeless, and unable to face routine chores. If these feelings last for a while, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.

FavorFavor like fl avor

Must be seasoned for the season

And release the reason for the seasons of life

Life has been no crystal stair

Because Favor ain’t fair

But if I dance to the track of favor in the fl avor of the rainbow

And release peace to my feet

To see the reason for the season of favor

As it rains like water on purpose

And fl ows to sow and dance to history of the story

Of fl avor in the favor so you can experience the fl ow just like

Raisins in the game called life

Favor is seasoned and fl avored with the Color of Vapor

Jumpto the beat

Music is enthusiastic and soothing

And rolls around my soul like a toll

As I look in the bowl and set the note in the loop

And release the rope of hope

As we dance to the note and make our round

To the sound and make it round as we release

And aim to please the maker of the SOUND of music

Now it takes the beat to the streets and change how strange

To the hearer of the music beats

Coming like melodies from heaven

Rain down on me

And Let music reign to the beat and hit the streets

To my relief

The potential of all natural healing is a cornerstone of her practice. During her studies here and abroad she learned the importance

of treating the whole patient: mind, body and spirit. She has lived a natural lifestyle for over 30 years and taught thousands of men, women, and children the art and science of natural living and healing. She is a successful entrepreneur with a vast clientele and a strong faith in God, which carries over into all her endeavors.

Dr Johnson achieved her vision for having an integrative health center where all the needs of her clients could be met. My Natures Delight has expanded to 5000 square feet providing a high quality of natural supplements for her customers, clients and members of the community. My Natures Delight has built a reputation for excellent customer service in Winter Haven, Florida.

As a functional medicine practitioner her training included the goals: to assist in the prevention of disease, identify and remove the cause of disease, address the whole person, and educate patients about

wellness. She also follows an integrated approach to medicine, combining natural medicines with western diagnostic methods. Dr. Johnson offers a skillful blend of nutritious food, vitamins, herbs, homeopathy, prayer, and counseling. She enjoys working with families, helping parents and children fi nd ways to be as healthy as possible, naturally.

Besides being a motivational speaker for seminars and lecture, including schools, churches and civic organizations, she has also developed a comprehensive series of holistic wellness classes to help individuals learn the art of self-care.

One of the greatest kept secrets is the work of pharmacist, herbalist and functional medicine practitioner, Corlis Renee Johnson. After graduating from Florida A&M University School of Pharmacy; while working as a pharmacist, she started a quest to fi nd an alternative solution to her personal health challenges. In her early 20’s she did not want surgery. After praying and a vision, God led her to seek an alternative solution. She followed her destined path of healing and left her pharmacy practice to begin her rigorous studies in nutrition and herbology. Now You're Wondering What To Wear…

What is “BLACK TIE”? – A Black Tie calls for formal attire. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

For most men, suits may seem very boring at times, yet, they can be made to

look chic and fun with a splash of color. If opting for a plain suit, adding a splash of color via a shirt or tie will add a formal but fun look. By adding a tie to your suit creates a smart and well-groomed look, but if you want to go for the more relaxed look, avoid a tie and leave the top button of your shirt open.

What is “FORMAL”? – usually means the same as Black Tie, but it could mean a black shirt, no tie with a tux. And women still wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

What is “CREATIVE BLACK TIE”? – this leaves room for trendy versions of formal wear. Guys can go more modern with a tux, maybe a black shirt with no tie or opt for an ascot instead. While the ladies still keep it elegant and posh, by wearing either long or short dresses, and accenting on the accessories.

The Lord is God, who has shown and given us light [He has illuminated us with grace, freedom, and joy]. Decorate the festival with leafy boughs and bind the sacrifices to be offered with thick cords [all over the priest's court, right up] to the horns of the altar Psalm 118:27 (Whole Chapter)

In fashion these are the festive colors for holiday attire, so pump up your CHRISTMAS spirit and bring the happiness and also confi dence with this CHRISTMAS fashion trends. When attending a Christmas party, it's important to look stylish and chic as well as individual. Don't choose anything you feel much too uncomfortable in, or clothes which don't look good on you. Keep in line with your own unique style but with a classy twist.

Christmas is usually identified with Red for Santa, White for the falling sky, and Gold for the celebration…

to say the least. Yolanda Adams is one of the industry’s most phenomenally gifted and anointed gospel artists; whose international acclaim is refl ected in the highly successful and celebrated albums that have characterized her career since day one. “In the Midst of It All,” she has managed to remain grounded, compassionate, and positively powerful. The award-winning, crowd-stirring, diva of versatility, style and the stage, shares with GospelNow the motivations marking her amazing journey; from the Southeast Inspirational Choir, to the State Dining Room at the Whitehouse.

Your style is as diverse and versatile as your audience. Did you deliberately determine at some point in your career that you were going to become that diverse or did you sort of evolve into it?

I think we all grow into who we are; but certainly, I did not intend to, or should I say, it wasn’t planned to just break out and do the things that we were doing. You have to remember, I started out with a choir and we were traveling all over the world, doing different things. I was just happy to do that. And then, when I moved into full-time Gospel music, I was happy doing that. But now, we’ve branched off into all areas of commerce and different parts of media, and it’s just been a blessing being able to do it. I think what happens is, once you’ve advanced in one thing, God allows you to advance in something else, when you’re ready. The time was right. You have stood on platforms with many that we consider to be iconic gospel singers, and now you are considered to be one of the greatest in the industry. How would you describe your journey to get to that place?

Thank you. My journey wasn’t this tedious journey that, “Oh my God, doors are closed in my face, I have to turn around, nobody likes me, all of this kind of stuff.” I had some great teachers on my way to where I am right now. Folks like Albertina Walker, Walter Hawkins, Tramaine Hawkins, Richard Smallwood, Darryl Coley, the legendary Carl Preacher, Brenda Waters, Shirley Joiner (who I started with, with the Southeast Inspirational Choir), James Cleveland, Sally Martin, (people like that, that I got a chance to meet before they passed away), who gave me some wonderful nuggets of knowledge. Hearing Shirley Caesar say that “you always have to pay attention to the business side of everything,” hearing from James Cleveland that “your voice will take you a long way, but your integrity has to remain in order for you to be effective there,” and of course, Tramaine always gave me wonderful advice about making sure that I stayed true to who I was, and not letting people’s opinions of me compromise the destiny and the journey that God was going to take me on. As an artist, a singer, an author, a designer, a mother, and so much more; how do you balance it all?

I have so much great help (she laughs). I’m not going to lie and say, “Oh girl, I’m superwoman.” Oh no. I have so much help. [I have] a wonderful staff, I have a wonderful family, I have wonderful people who surround me all the time and gird me with prayer, and a lot of patience; because, what we do is, we go out and try to live our dreams, but you must have people with you in the trenches, helping you do all of that. I have lots of great, great help; wouldn’t do it without them. This journey…there is a lot of work entailed into it; but it is so much fun.

You are one of the most inspiring and motivating gospel industry leaders. As you inspire others, who inspires Yolanda Adams?

My greatest inspiration would have to be my grandmother, who is 94 years old [Frances Means]. We have gotten to see some things happen on this earth together, and I am just so glad that God afforded me the opportunity to love on her and take care of her, until she makes her transition. She has really been one of my greatest motivators; she’s also been one of my greatest cheerleaders. It is a wonderful thing to be able to have your grandmother at your side; and then be able to have her there so that your child can understand the beauty of family, and the depth of family, and how we are there for one another, how we support one another. It’s just been great for me. Earlier in your career, we know that you spent some time modeling and we know that you are developing a clothing line. Where can we find the fashions?

You can’t fi nd the fashions right now, but www.yolandaadamslive.com will be up and about so that folks will know exactly where to fi nd the fashions. We set out to do it before, but we had some production problems; and you know, I’m just going to be transparent with all of my people. If it wasn’t right, I wasn’t putting it out just to say, “oooh, I got a clothing line, now!” We do things very meticulously on purpose; so that we get the best product to our people. I think of my folks as family. I don’t just think of them as consumers. We’ve got to give you the best of everything, so that when you wear a piece of clothing from Yolanda’s closet, you’re like “hey, this is from Yolanda’s closet.”Now, will we be able to afford Yolanda’s closet?

Yes you will. Come on, I’m a working mom. I know

I think we all grow into who we are; but certainly, I did not intend to, or should I say, it wasn’t planned to just break out and do the things that we were doing. I say, it wasn’t planned to just break out and do the things that we were doing. how it is. I’m the oldest of 6 kids, so I defi nitely know how it is to want to look fashionable and chic at the same time; but then save money. Being the oldest of 6 kids, I was the tallest girl, so I would always go to the fabric stores. My grandmother and I would go to the fabric stores, and they would save certain types of material for me. We had a really nice relationship with the lady that was cutting the material. So, it was like, “I’m going to need this for the high school this, and I’m going to need this for that, and that for this.” So, I was literally making and designing my clothes back then. There wasn’t a line for tall girls at that time. The store, Tall Girls was not as fashionable as it is right now. So, I would have to extend patterns, extend the arms in patterns, shrink the waist, and all that kinds of stuff to fi t who I am. Thank God, you never know why, but God had a reason for it. I thank Him for that. When we open up your book, “Points of Power,” what experience or understanding should we walk away with?

One of the fi rst things is to be joyous in your life, no matter what you face. There are a lot of people who have gone through some things and they are so bitter with where they are. “Why didn’t God bless me like so and so?” “Why did I have to deal with this, or deal with that?” If you view it as an opportunity to be God’s voice and God’s hand in the earth, then you have a different perspective. I’ve never looked at my life, like “woe is me, oh what am I going to do next?” People don’t like that. Now, how fun would it be to hang around me if I was always talking about “Well you know, I wish the Lord would, and I sho’ wished I had…?” Now, that wouldn’t be much fun. That’s one of the things that we defi nitely want them to know…Life is good, God is awesome, and in everything that we encounter, there is a lesson to be learned; but most importantly, there is a live to be lived that really can be lived in joy. Is there a book tour that we should be looking out for?

A whole lot of things will happen in 2011. [Check] the website, www.YolandaAdamsLive.com. Starting January 1st, there will be a lot of postings to tell everybody where I’m going to be, and how long I’m going to be there. We’re defi nitely doing another press junket for the book. It was well received from the Morning Show folks, and folks from all over. We are expecting a huge infl ux of Christmas sales. As the book gets out there, and folks get a chance to see, [they will say] “Oh, so Yolanda’s writing books now, and she really can write, that’s so good.” (laughing) Where did the concept for the Yolanda Adams Morning Show come from, and how did it evolve into the nationally syndicated program that we hear all across the country?

I’m always into business deals. I have a great attorney and great business people hanging around me all the time. The opportunity came for me to do a show in my hometown of Houston, Texas. My attorney said, “what do you think about doing the show?” I said, “guess what, I would love to do it.” He was like, “Yeah?” I said, “yeah, my fi rst degree is in Radio/Television Broadcasting.” Once folks started hearing it, they started saying, “we’ve got to have it in this region, we’ve got to have it in that one.” Forty-fi ve markets later, here we are today, and we’re still growing. The concept actually came from just listening to great radio. Listening to your Tom Joyners and your Steve Harveys, and the aspects of what they had already included in their show. You always need someone who can bring the funny, which is Marcus D. Wiley’s responsibility. You need someone who is the balance, which is “me.” And of course, you need somebody who’s going to always instigate…anytime. That’s Anthony Valary. We really have a lot of fun. We wake up every morning with the opportunity to make somebody’s life really good. As you already know, with the economy the way it is, and with us having to deal with so many different things politically and structurally, there are times when folks want to just breathe. They want to have somewhere to go, where they are not being judged about their political affi liation, and they are not being judged about this or that, and that and this. That’s what we provide. We provide a safe-haven for people who just want to get to work, and talk around the coffee bend about issues of the day in a very practical, but, Christian way.

[Also], I just want to thank all of the people who read your articles whether it be on the net or from the magazine. We really appreciate their support over the years. We’ve had a chance to come into their homes with the music. We’ve had a chance to just travel all over the world and hear their cries, hear what’s going on with them and I just really thank the Lord for the opportunity to do what we do. I live a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful life. It’s only because God said, “okay girl, I’m going to give you a chance to do this and live your dreams, and all of that great stuff.” So, thanks to them, I get a chance to do what I love to do.

AWhere did the name, rod Z come from?

I just cut some of my real name short. You know we like quick names. When I really blow up, it’ll just be “Z.” They used to call Cedric the Entertainer by his whole name until he blew up; now they just call him Ced.

hoW did you get started in the industry; Were you the class cloWn or the practical joker in the family?

No, I wasn’t the class clown. My mom and dad would tear my behind up. I just wrote the jokes for the class clown. I started emceeing events at Bethune Cookman. Back then, Easy Tee used to MC and when he wasn’t there one time, I jumped on the stage and started telling jokes. People said it was funny and I wasn’t even trying to make them laugh. I told my first few jokes at Bethune.

hoW old Were you When you got started?Just out of college, at about 24 or 25.

Who opened the door for you? God. Then I would say my best friend, Corey and a

club owner named Robert Johnson. Corey over-heard Mr. Johnson talking about a show he was about to have and Corey suggested to Mr. Johnson that he allow me to open up. The show was in Lakeland and I didn’t know what kind of show it was. I opened up for the Black Chippendales. The women were expecting “Shaka Zulu” and they got me; but I kept them laughing until the Chippendales got there. From there, Mr. Johnson put me in a show at the Bob Carr Auditorium with Don (DC) Curry, Cheryl Underwood and some oth-ers. It was sold out with 2500 people.

Why comedy, Why not something else? I’m not only a comedian, I’m also a percussion-

ist. I’ve been playing drums since 4th grade and I play now on Sunday nights at 57 West. One of my dreams is to tour and play the drums with a band, then get off the drums and do stand up. With me, you get two for the price of one.

have you alWays done christian comedy?I never labeled it as Christian comedy. I’m not

renouncing Christianity; because I actually do the majority of my shows at churches and church conventions. I am a comedian who happens to be a Christian. I look up to Sinbad, Bill Cosby and Eddie Murphy. Eddie in my eyes is the king of Comedy. Richard Pryor laid the groundwork and Eddie Murphy put comedy on a Rock Star level. He can do every genre, he crosses over, he can do imper-sonations, and he’s the voice behind some of the cartoon characters.

as a comedian, are you signed under a label?

At first I was on the Allen and Allen label. Then I went to Meridian Music. I want my next project to be independent. I’d really like to be on the Bad Boy or Def Jam label…a rough label with a good boy image.

hoW do you get your material, What do you joke about?

I joke about life in general, my past, both good and bad; and the news. A lot of comedy is from pain. Comedy is so powerful because we are able to laugh at the adversity that we’ve come through. You know you’ve made it through when you can look back at it and laugh.

do you ever offend people in your shoWs?I don’t try to. I don’t think you have to do that to

be funny. I try to get people to laugh at themselves instead of the joke being on them. I don’t degrade women or joke about the disabled; but I have been known to tear someone another one if they inter-rupt or distract me.

do you just make up things as you go or is it scripted?

I write; but I also come “off the cuff,” or use what-ever comes to mind in the setting that I’m in.

hoW do people find you if they’re looking for laughter?

Rod-Z.com, on Facebook at Rod Z Fan, or on Twitter at Rod Z Comic, or on YouTube. My manager is Garrett Johnson at (323) 732-6474 in LA or (914) 663-9122 in NY.

What message do you Want us to leave your shoWs With?

The comedy set for me is a lil’ piece of heaven. I like to allow people a chance to have a mini vaca-tion and get away from their problems. If you can laugh at the show then you can keep living and enjoying life.

What Would you like to do With the gift you’ve been given?

Bill Cosby came to BCU and I rode with President Bronson to pick him up. The back wing of the plane had Camille on it, his wife’s name. The door of the plane had a picture of her in her cap and gown. Two black pilots got off and then Mr. Cosby followed a trail of cigar smoke. While in Daytona, Mr. Cosby wrote two checks to pay for tuition for two students and he gave somewhere between $300k-$500k to BCU. That image never left my mind. I want do that at least once in my life. That’s what I call making it…coming back and giving back.

s the adage goes, art imitates life; and in the artistic, comedic presentations of Funnyman Rod Z, life is the actual impression and foundation that maximizes laughter every time he enters a room. Proverbs 17:22 declares, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” Inspirational comedian Rod Z aims for the funny bone in all of us; not just to tickle us, but to minster to the dry places that crop up in response to everyday challenges. The Jones High and Bethune Cookman graduate is Central Florida’s entertaining and inspiring, minister of comedy.

Cookie Ingredients3 cups all-purpose flour1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder3/4 teaspoon baking soda1/4 teaspoon salt1 tablespoon ground ginger1 3/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon1/4 teaspoon ground cloves6 tablespoons unsalted butter3/4 cup dark brown sugar1 large egg1/2 cup molasses2 teaspoons vanilla1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest (optional)

continue to mix until well blended.Gradually stir in dry ingredients until blended and 4. smooth.Divide dough in half and wrap each half in plastic 5. and let stand at room temperature for at least 2 hours or up to 8 hours.(Dough can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 6. 4 days, but in this case it should be refrigerated. Return to room temp before using.) Preheat oven to 375°.Grease or line cookie sheets with parchment 7. paper.Place 1 portion of the dough on a lightly fl oured 8. surface.Sprinkle fl our over dough and rolling pin.9. Roll dough to a scant 1/4-inch thick.10. Use additional fl our to avoid sticking.11. Cut out cookies with desired cutter-- the ginger 12. bread man is our favorite of course.Space cookies 1 1/2-inches apart.13. Bake 1 sheet at a time for 7-10 minutes (the lower 14. time will give you softer cookies-- very good!).Remove cookie sheet from oven and allow the 15. cookies to stand until the cookies are fi rm enough to move to a wire rack. After cookies are cool you may decorate them any 16. way you like.I usually brush them with a powdered sugar glaze 17. when I am in a hurry, but they look wonderful decorated with Royal icing.

A native of St. Helena Island, South Carolina, she is currently employed with the Durham School Services in Beaufort County. She started singing in the church choir for the Lord at the age of nine up to this present time; she enjoys singing for the Lord. My vision is to lift up the name of Jesus Christ in songs and music. God has also given her the gift to write songs. She has performed at many different venues, which includes, the S.C. State Capital, Atlanta Gospel Showcase, and she recorded a CD in Nashville, Tennessee. She also sang at weddings, different church functions, and recently, performed on the Crazy Praise Live show in Savannah, Georgia. The scripture to encourage her is Psalm 23.

Where Are the Holy Women?

T he Agape Perfecting Praise and Worship Center’s Women’s Ministry hosts the

first annual “Women in White” fellowship service. The program’s guest speaker was Pastor Sandra K. Haynes, of Words of Life Ministries in Altamonte Springs. Women worshipped together and made commitments together, to become and remain Holy Women of God. The southwest Orlando congregation is led by Pastor Sharon Y. Riley.

For the seventh year, Pastor Sharon Riley and the Agape Perfecting Praise and Worship Center host

an annual Thanksgiving luncheon and Thanksgiving give-away for residents of the Magnolia Pointe Apartment Community on Mercy Drive in Orlando. The ministry has provided Thanksgiving boxes for the 165 senior residents who live there, since 2003. Pastor Sharon states, “it is more critical now to continue being a blessing to the families because of the state of our economy.” This year, Super Wal-Mart in Sanford, donated many of the menu items for the Thanksgiving luncheon. The project in previous years has been financially supported, solely through the donations of members of the Ivey Lane congregation.
