Principal’s Report

Congratulations to all those students who represented the

school at the recent Zone Cross Country held at Mulwaree High

School. Overall Goulburn High School was placed 2nd in the zone.

The Parent Portal is up and running and it appears that most

parents are pleased with the information that we are able to

provide for them. Additional new features are being added

regularly, for example, a survey for parents is now available to

indicate the level of school satisfaction.

Last week we hosted a number of students from the Crescent

School for a day due to some electrical issues with their school.

I would like to thank my staff for their quick response in

reorganising our school to accommodate the Crescent School.

Thank you to all those parents who attended the recent Y7/11/12 Parent/Teacher Evening. We would

appreciate any feedback in relation to the new electronic booking system.

During last term we began using a new attendance software program and are currently reviewing any errors

that may have occurred during the changeover. To assist with this process, we will be sending out letters that

indicate your child’s absences and we request that you check the details and then confirm with the school if

any discrepancies have occurred. We want to ensure that our information is accurate. Again thank you for

your support in relation to this matter.

Goulburn Country Outfitters no longer stock uniforms.

All uniforms are now for sale at WORKLOCKER 310 Auburn Street, next to Blooms Chemist.

PBL at GHS - POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING

At Goulburn High School, students are encouraged to demonstrate respect

for themselves and others through their positive actions and efforts in the

classroom and playground. Our PBL values are important for school and for

life. Students are encouraged to aim high in all aspects of life, making wise

choices and taking responsibility for their actions, as well as doing their best

to be considerate and positive members of our school at all times.

We will be holding a Recognition Assembly later this term to acknowledge

students who have achieved the various levels in our school merit program.

NETBALL COMPETITION

Year 7 and 8 students attended the Netball NSW School Cup on 28th of April in Goulburn.

GHS entered a boys and girls team. The girls won 4 of their 8 games. The boys team won 6

of their 8 games and are now progressing to the School Cup Final in Queanbeyan in late July.

Both teams had a very successful and enjoyable day out. A big ‘thank you’ to Taylor, Ricci

and Hannah for umpiring and coaching on the day.

Deputy Principal’s Report

Back to work

I am pleased to be back at my desk after relieving for four and a half

weeks as principal at Crookwell High School. It was very interesting

to see how a different school operates and I was made very wel-

come by the school community. I hope I was able to take some

Goulburn High School wisdom to Crookwell as well as bring back

some Crookwell High School wisdom to Goulburn. A very big thank

you to Mr Mani for filling in my role and Mrs James for relieving as

Head Teacher HSIE. Thanks also to Mr Browne for taking on my

Physics class whilst I was away.

Uniform

I believe our school uniform is the best looking in town. It is a symbol of our school and we expect our

students to wear the full school uniform with pride. As the weather cools down, I find an assortment of

colours and styles come out of the wardrobe to be worn to school. It is vital that parents are aware of

what their children are wearing to school and ensure that it complies with our uniform code. If financial

stresses make purchasing items of uniform difficult, please contact our school office as we can help

families purchase uniform items.

School Plan

Our school planning team is working hard on the milestones phase of the planning process. This involves

mapping out the strategies and budget required to support the directions in our school plan for 2015-

2017. This is being supported by surveys of parents, students and staff. We would appreciate it if parents

could please complete the survey found at https://goo.gl/Ot0NHd . The survey can also be accessed using

a link on the Parent Portal. Please contact the school if you are having difficulties accessing the portal.

CROSS COUNTRY 2015

Goulburn High’s Cross Country Carnival was once again a big success. The rain held off just long enough to get

through all age groups. Student participation was very high which is always good to see and we would like to

congratulate all students who ran on the day. We would like to thank all of the

students who assisted with the BBQ and with the running of the carnival. The top 6

runners from each age group made it through to the zone competition which was

held at Mulwaree High School on Friday 15th May.

We had approximately 20 students make it to the Regional Carnival. We are now

awaiting confirmed results from the zone carnival and these students will be

acknowledged in the next school newsletter. A special mention must go to Amber

Lepre and Ben Staines who were age champions at zone. We wish all our regional

runners the very best for the 29th of May.

Indian Dress-Ups

On the 13th of May, the Year 10 International Studies class was able to try on Indian clothing. There was a range of

saris and kurtas. Mrs Mani showed us how to put on the traditional clothing and explained where one might wear

the clothes. Saris are a traditional clothing for women. A sari consists of a midriff blouse and a drape. They are

most commonly made out of silk. Saris are brightly coloured and covered with shiny objects. The women also

wear lots of jewellery. Kurtas are long shirts that go down to your knees. They are most commonly made out of

cotton, or silk for special events. The kurtas are mostly in dull colours like white and brown.

GOULBURN HIGH’S DEBATING TEAM ARGUES WITH CROOKWELL

On the 15th of May, the senior debating team, Dallas Strettles, Bethany McGoogan, Charlotte Hargan and Tiffany Edwardson, met Crookwell High School for their first showdown in the ‘Premier’s Debating Challenge’. The topic, ‘We should replace all assessment tasks with examinations’, was approached with great tenacity and enthusiasm. The team, led by Bethany McGoogan, had some very good arguments. The team highlighted that assessing students through examinations would combat plagiarism issues in schools and allow everyone to be assessed under the same conditions. Unfortunately, Crookwell took the debate out. I would like to congratulate the team on their efforts in round one. Stay tuned for more updates as the competition progresses.

WE ARE AUSTRALIAN

In International Studies we have been learning about being Australian and what it means to be Australian.

Last Friday (8th of May) in our double period we had a stereotypical Australian barbeque because

barbeques in Australia are ‘traditional’. We cooked sausages and ate them, then we went out to the front

of the school and had a thong throwing competition. Thongs are associated with Australian culture and

these ones had the Australian flag printed on them.

GHS BREKKY CLUB

GHS offers free breakfast to our students every Monday,

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The facility is offered

by volunteer GHS staff, and I would like to thank them for

giving up their time.

We believe it is important for students to have a great

start to the day and we offer toast, juice and hot milo.

Breakfast is served from the canteen between 8:20 and

8:55am. All students are welcome.

China Town Excursion

China Town was amazing and we were able to experience lots of different foods and learnt a lot about

Chinese culture as well as Chinese history.

First we went on a tour guided by George Kee. He was amazing and showed us the golden water mount

tree which was a preserved eucalyptus tree with golden colouring and water dripping from it which is

meant to be good luck. We also saw the spiritual angel hanging from the sky in an alley and walked

through the main street and walked under the archways demonstrating that we were welcomed. While

we were standing on the side of the street, a Chinese couple asked a few of us girls for a photo as it is

rare to come by blonde haired people in China. On the tour we passed a store that was owned by the 34th

descendant of a former Emperor.

After the tour we had a relaxing walk through the Chinese Gardens. In the centre of the Chinese Gardens

we had the chance to try on some traditional clothing and get some photos taken which was a lot of fun.

We looked pretty slick … including the boys.

For lunch we had Yum Cha at a restaurant called Emperor’s Garden. First we were served chicken feet

which was quite interesting as a lot of us had never tried it before. We were also served pork rolls which

were savoury but sweet, then we tried the traditional fried rice and spring rolls. We attempted to use

chopsticks which was quite difficult as some of

us had never actually used or succeeded in

using chopsticks. To wash down our food we

had some nice traditional tea.

Overall the day was really pleasant and was a

great experience and we look forward to ex-

ploring the culture in the future.

We would like to thank Mr Mackay and Mr

McMahon for putting up with us and allowing

us to have a great experience and a fantastic

day.
