Govan and the Gaels: Gaelic perspectives on life and work in an industrial community

by Professor Donald Meek, formerly of departments of Celtic, Aberdeen and Edinburgh Universities

This lecture will offer a preliminary overview of the ways in which Gaelic-speaking migrants from the Highlands and Hebrides were represented in the professions, trades, crafts and social life of Govan from about 1850. It will look in particular at the roles of Gaels in the churches, schools and industries of the area. The contribution of the Gaels of Govan to Gaelic life and culture in Scotland will also be considered. Gaelic sources, both prose and poetry, will be used in translation.Govan Police Pipeband marching
