In rhe recent years the application of Geographical Information System (GIS) with input from Remote

Sensin_q (RS) is becoming an essential tool for planners and decision makers. The use of GIS as a tool for

intcgrating several themes on earth surface features, apparently uncorelated at times, to amive at a

lr'uitful decision or tbr creating a model for an would be ssenario or visualize "what happens if'sifuation has been helping decision rrrakers to meet a challenge in solving many problems like

flood mapping, rural developmenl, watershed rnodeling and management, finding drinking water

fesources, deveiopment of new roads in hilly terrain, disaster management, spatial environmental

planning, etc.

Geoinfor-matics and Remote Sensing Cell, Deparlment of Higher Education, Science & Technology and

Biotechnoiogy, Government of West Bengal has established its credential as a pioneering organization

in generating ItS & GIS database for spatial information in various scales for land, water resources as

well as various application areas for developmental planning activitres. It has. also underlaken

several projects at Natior-ral and State levei to rneet the needs of the various National level and State level

Stakeholders. It has an energetic group of young specialists in the lield of Remote Sensing and GIS and

also has a large archive of data and satellite imageries. The cell is equipped with adequate number oflatest Graphics rrVorkstations, GIS, Image Processing and Photogrammetric software as well as

sophisticated GPS instruments.

Certificate Courses in lLernote Sensing & GIS

It has been observed thal there is a growing need of application of Remote Sensing and GIS in various fields

of study. Keeping that in vieu, Depaftment of Higher Education, Science and Technology and

Biotechnology, Government of West Bengal has starled offering various courses in Remote Sensing and

GIS frorn the year 2008-09. During June - July 2018 'Eight Week Certificate Course in Rernote

Sensing and GIS' will be organised. The Certificate Course is meant for hands on training on the

subiect. The course will provide knowledge to the professionals of various fields working under

diflerent Government Depaftments I Organizations to apply these technologies in their respective fields

and to facilitate the faculty members fiom acadernic institutions to impart better quality teaching on

Rerlote Sensing & CIS at unclergraduate, post-graduate and research levels. The courses ale organised

through WestBengal State Council ofScience &Technology.

1. A person in permanent service in a Govemrrrent Department/ Organiz,ation utilizing Remote Sensing

and GIS or fulI time teachers from Govemment Sponsored College/ Urriversity teaching Remote Sensing

and GIS with a Master's degree in any branch of Science or in Geography / Bachelor's degree in any branch

of Engineering or equivalent duly nominated by hisi her employer may be generally considered for

admission.

2. The selection will be made on the basis of merit depending bn qualification and experience or by any

other criteria fixed by the competent authority before the selection. Competent authority may relax

eligibility criteria.

Sessions & Classcs

1. The Certificate Course will be conduoted from 4th June to 27th July 2018.

2. There will be three theoretical classes of fifty minutes duration and one practical class of three hours

duration every day from Monday to Friday excepting Government Holidays.

3. The classes will commence from 1 I AM andwill continue up to 5 PM.

4. On successful completion of the course, the participants will be awarded certificates.
