TOURISM business.mitchellchamber.com/list/member/corn-palace-gift-shop-mitchell 11

Another month is in the books which brings us one month closer to the summer tourism season. New merchandise continues to trickle in as well.

As I consider myself an amateur chef and confirmed kitchen gadget junkie, I was thrilled when we received a shipment of corn gadgets as well as a new item to us – a microwave popcorn & pasta/rice cooker. I can’t wait to try it out!

Walking sticks, t-shirts, jewelry, corn pens, pocket Farkle game,

plaques, 2014 Corn Palace postcards, dream catchers, toys, food items, onion/tomato savers – all kinds of neat things keep arriving almost daily.

With the coming of our summer season we will be sending out letters shortly to our summer employees and also start accepting applications for new employees. This is always an interesting time of year.

Til we talk again,Troy “PoPcOrN” Magnuson

Governor awards $1.24 million grant to Local MCTEA Academy

On February 5, Governor Daugaard announced over $8 million in career and technical education grants with $1.24 million going to Mitchell School District’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Academy. According to Superintendent Graves, the grant application’s author, the money will be spent to add three new CTE programs to MCTEA (Mitchell regional Career and Technical Education Academy), as well as expanding two existing ones. “This grant award is going to allow us to not only move MCTEA ahead by well over two years but also dramatically enhance the facilities, equipment, and technology available to our instructors and students.” A key reason the grant was successful, in Graves’ opinion, was “an extremely tight connection to workforce demands in our area. When we began the MCTEA program, it was at the behest of and with the encouragement of our local and regional industry. They knew what kind of work skills were needed in our area and this point was made, as well, by Governor Daugaard. It was up to us to simply mold our CTE programs into market-driven ones.” To do that, Mitchell Schools turned to the District’s own post-secondary

program, Mitchell Technical Institute. “It was a bit of an ‘ah-ha’ moment for us,” laughed Denise Hoffman,

MCTEA Director. “We had listened to the Governor speak about the increasing shortages of people with the necessary skills to accept good-

paying positions here in South Dakota and we asked ourselves how we could make sure when we offered CTE programs that they would be market-driven. After about two minutes, it occurred to us that focusing on the market for course offerings was essentially MTI’s mission and that giving them overall control of MCTEA would be our best shot at making this happen. Clearly the Governor agrees.” As a result of the grant award, MCTEA will add Welding V to the welding/manufacturing program, a sequence of courses already producing skilled welders ready to move into MTI’s welding program or immediately into the workforce beyond graduation, and Digital Electronics to the Project Lead the Way engineering coursework. More dramatically, MCTE will add three new programs with full coursework offerings: agriculture, auto mechanics, and construction/architecture.

The grant, mounting to over $1.5 million in total spending because of a promised 20% match by the school district, will allocate $30,000 for teacher training, $270,000 for technology infrastructure upgrades, $880,000 for facilities renovations, and $350,000 for updated equipment.“Historically,” lamented Graves, “what we used to call vocational education never really fulfilled the promise of those who advocated for it because we too often resorted, for financial reasons, to dark dingy shops, obsolete equipment that would be considered antiques in the workplace, and very little in the way of technology. That won’t be the case here for three reasons. First, we are offering a regional model, opening up these opportunities to students across the whole area and not just to Mitchell High School. This gives us economies of scale. Second, MTI, under the leadership of President Greg Von Wald simply won’t permit a program that is anything but work-place ready. Finally and most recently, the Governor has provided us with the funds to move this program along so that our students can master challenging CTE learning objectives and enter the workforce or postsecondary study with the skills necessary for success.”

National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic Mitchell had a great presence at the National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic last month in Milwaukee, WI! The Mitchell Convention & Visitors Bureau along with seventeen partners had great exposure to approximately 29,000 pheasant hunters. Partners included Cabela’s, Boyds’ Gunstock Industries, Ramada Inn, K&B Archery, Anderson Kennels, Mike Kuchera’s SD Hunting Guide Service, Inc., Rooster Roost Ranch, Pheasants Forever, Hampton Inn, Kieffer Pheasant Hunting, Granite Springs Lodge, Wegleitner Fine Art, Redstone Creek Guides, Folan

Ranch, Hunter’s Dream, LLC, The Roost, and the Pro Hockey Celebrity Hunt. Mitchell is widely recognized for the overwhelming hospitality and the phenomenal hunting. Items donated by Cabela’s, Ramada Inn, K&B Archery, and Boyds’ Gunstock Industries for the daily drawing were in high demand and kept people coming back to our booth! Visitors were extremely interested in coming to the Mitchell area to hunt, many with stories to share of past hunts in South Dakota. This was an amazing opportunity to make contact with those that make Mitchell a place to experience and we will be following up with each individual who expressed interest! National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic is a celebration that focuses on wildlife conservation, upland game bird hunting, sport dogs, and wildlife habitat management and restoration. In connection with the event, Pheasants Forever & Quail Forever held seminars on habitat improvement, hunting, shooting sports, wild game cooking, dog training, conservation and more!

The Mitchell Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is a division of the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce. Consistent with the goals of the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce, the Convention & Visitors Bureau exists to enhance the economic well-being of the City of Mitchell and its surrounding area.

While the Chamber’s mission is to provide leadership to unify community action that enhances the business environment and the quality of life of the Mitchell area, the Mitchell CVB is tasked with the mission to increase visitor-related revenue from local, state, regional, and national markets. The CVB is the primary marketing agency for the city and region and promotes the Mitchell

area for leisure travel, group travel, pheasant hunting, athletic and special events, meetings and conventions. The final result of these concentrated efforts is a positive and meaningful experience for our visitors as well as strong economy for the Mitchell area.

Through its holistic marketing strategy, online presence, brand platform, consistent communications, reliable research, sales, service, and the right partnerships, the Mitchell CVB will:

• Increase awareness of Mitchell • Increase attendance and spending at Mitchell’s attractions, hotels, retailers, restaurants, & bars • Bring more athletic events, special events, meetings, and conventions to Mitchell

• Position Mitchell as the premier location for pheasant hunting • Maximize marketing impact and media-buying power through cooperative marketing initiatives with partners • Provide interactive content and invite more consumer dialogue online • Generate media coverage • Utilize and maximize research on critical customer information and intelligence to outline the greatest use of resources to increase business demand to Mitchell • Deliver the highest level of service and quality

As I consider myself an amateur chef and confirmed kitchen gadget junkie, I was thrilled when we received a shipment of corn gadgets as well as a new item to us – a microwave popcorn & pasta/rice cooker. I can’t wait to try it out!

A New York Life Guaranteed Lifetime Income Annuity can provide a guaranteed lifetime income stream that is essentially like a“paycheck” for life, no matter what. Imagine that: peace of mind, guaranteed income, and a company that stands for financial strength, integrity, and humanity. Now that’s retirement.

For most jurisdictions, the policy form number for the New York Life Guaranteed Lifetime Income Annuity is ICC11-P102. State variations may apply. A Guaranteed Lifetime Income Annuity is issued by New York Life Insurance and Annuity Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of New York Life Insurance Company. The guarantee is backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer. © 2012 New York Life Insurance Company, 51 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10010 SMRU 0473569CV (Exp. 04/09/2014)
