What is Summer Residential Governor’s School?

▪ Provides gifted high school sophomores and juniors with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts; humanities; mathematics, science, and technology; agriculture, or through mentorships in Marine Science , Engineering, or Medicine & Health Sciences.

▪ Students live on a college or university campus for up to four weeks each summer.

▪ Involved in classroom and laboratory work, fieldstudies, research, individual and group projects andperformances, and seminars with noted scholars,visiting artists, and other professionals.

▪ Mentorships - Work side-by-side with researchscientists, physicians, and a variety of otherprofessionals.

Three Types of Applications

▪ Academic Application – complete thisapplication for the Agriculture program, theHumanities program, and the Math, Science,and Technology program, Medicine and HealthSciences

▪ Mentorship Application – complete thisapplication for the Engineering (JLAB) andVirginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)programs

▪ Visual and Performing Arts Application –complete this application for all of thesubcategories of the Visual and Performing Artsprogram (dance, instrumental music, theatre,visual arts, and vocal music)

VPA Governor’s School

▪ Radford University – June 21– July 18 for the2020 Summer Residential Governor's Schoolfor Humanities and Visual and Performing Arts.

▪ In order to receive a Governor’s School certificate, students are required to be in attendance from the opening ceremony on June 21 through the closing ceremony on July 18

VPA – Adjudication

▪ Limited Allotment per School

▪ If nominated for any of the VPA categories –Students will go through adjudication process.

▪ 2020 Adjudication Site:▪ George Mason University-Jan 4th

▪ It is a Saturday DURING winter break. ▪ Failure to show up for adjudication –

Students will be responsible to pay $25 cancellation fee.

Eligibility Criteria for Academic Applications ▪ Strong Academic Standing

▪ Two forms of Aptitude tests

▪ Two letters of recommendation

▪ A student must be neither a current applicant to a 2020Governor's Foreign Language Academy or other SummerResidential Governor’s School, nor a former participant inthese programs. A student may attend only one ForeignLanguage Academy or Summer Residential Governor’sSchool program during his or her high school career.

▪ A student must be genuinely interested in attending theGovernor's School and have the emotional maturity,stability and self-discipline to live away from home for anextended period.▪ Once selected, a student MUST attend Governor’s

School.

Each student application will require:• Completed application form• Test data (completed by school)• Essay• Letters of recommendation &

Reference Sheets • Score sheet (completed by school)

Application Process

▪ All applications MUST be completed electronically. Original Signatures are Required.

▪ Print Name on Top of EACH page

▪ Pages are numbered correctly & in correct order

▪ Letter of References MUST have original signature.

▪ Teachers are Required to use online reference form

Teacher Recommendation

❏ Narrative/Reference should be on school letterhead

❏ Cannot be given to the student- directly to Ms. Gresh/Ms.Westfall

❏ If you are using an outside recommender, it needs to be an original copy on letter head with an ink signature

❏ Student’s name MUST be displayed on top❏ Original signature❏ Must use online fillable form❏ If an outside recommender gives your letter

and rating scale to you, it must be in a sealed envelope!

Recommender A- Teacher in the students area of interest who can assess your current abilities.

Recommender B- Teacher/ instructor/ advisor/ adult (Outside of student’s family) who is familiar with the student’s work.

Deadlines

▪ All interested students MUST fill out the interest form by November 5 – No late-comers will be considered!

▪ All VPA interested students – Please see your performing arts teacher

▪ Academic & Mentorship Application Deadline –December 6th, 2019 – No Exceptions!

▪ VPA Application Deadline-January 29th, 2020-No Exceptions!

** Please do not wait until the last minute to come see Mrs. Gresh or Mrs. Westfall for application assistance! The application must be handed to us directly!
