AREA UPDATES

Area 9

Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe The Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe completed a visioning session in preparation for the upcoming year and will be installing their new board on July 10, with the assistance of District Governor Randy Van Tassell and Assistant Governor Bob Conner. Demotion of now Past President Nick Abelow took place on June 26. The club is getting numerous requests to help local organizations and will be assisting with the Coalition for the Homeless fundraiser on July 20.

Rotary Club of Tahoe Douglas The Rotary Club of Tahoe-Douglas will be assisting again this year with the concerts at Harvey’s/Harrah’s as well as numerous other volunteer projects.

Rotary Clubs of Carson City and Cap City Passport The two Carson City clubs held one of their major fundraisers on June 22, the Brew tasting in downtown Carson City. From small beginnings as a brew and pizza tasting in the Carson Mall, they now have multiple breweries, many micro, participating along Curry Street with local food vendors. The newly instituted Cap City Passport, formerly known as the Carson Sunset Club, has their own trailer to sell brats, burgers and beer to

to the public. The Rotary Club of Carson is preparing for the first District Governor visit of the year on July 9.

Rotary Club of Minden The Rotary Club of Minden is working on their next District Service Grant.

Area 11

Area 11 is the only area that bounds four states with clubs 300 miles apart! Below are a highlights of the activities our clubs have been doing this year.

Rotary Club of Ely President Shannon Sena is elated to report, “We gained five new young members! We also had a very successful fishing derby and golf tournament for our scholarships. We were able to give $20,000 in scholarships to 14 recipients this year.”

Rotary Club of Winnemucca President of the Rotary Club of Winnemucca shared, “I am proud to say our attendance has improved this year.  We started a few new things in our meetings.  I research the day of the year, such as National Camping Day.  When introductions are done, our members would say if they camp, RV or tent, and if they have a camping

I look forward to interacting with you as I visit each club. During July I get to visit with Carson City, Fernley, Fallon, Chester, Incline Village, Tahoe City, Truckee Sunrise, Tahoe - Incline, Truckee, and Pollock Pines.

The team at the District stands ready to jump on the back of your bike to assist with anything we can to help this be the Best Year Yet! for your club. Feel free to reach out if you have questions and they will be in touch with committee chairs to offer assistance and support.

I look forward to an exciting and rewarding year for every member, each club, and District 5190. Also, be sure to mark your calendars to celebrate “Your Best Year Yet” at District 5190’s RALLYE, April 24 - 26, 2020, at the Nugget, Sparks, Nevada.

Next to a leisurely walk, I enjoy a spin on my tandem bicycle. It is splendid to feel the wind blowing in my face and the springy motion of my iron steed. The

rapid rush through the air gives me a delicious sense of strength and buoyancy, and the exercise makes my

pulse dance and my heart sing. ~ Helen Keller ~

trip planned for the summer.  Each week is different and it has given us the opportunity to know each other better.  We also read a Rotary fact at every meeting.” Although membership has decreased, the club has gained seven new members and completed seven service projects for the community.

Winnemucca Rotary donated bi-lingual books to the Hospital for a baby's first book.  Elmer and Andy, Service Above Self, books have been ordered from the Fairborn Rotary club for our second graders.

Rotary Club of Elko Anna Fluellen, President of the Rotary Club of Elko, soon to deliver her second child, had a fine year.  Her club received and successfully executed a community grant to provide winter gear, such as hats and gloves to homeless people in the vicinity of Elko.  The Elko Noon club also organized and hosted a very successful “Autumn Gala” – fun night and a fundraiser that netted a respectable amount of funds. The long-popular Christmas ornament sale was reinvigorated this year with an ornament depicting the large flag that continually flies over Elko.

Rotary Club of Elko Desert Sunrise The Elko Desert Sunrise Club, under the leadership of Kerry Aguirre, also had a great year. The club installed six bicycle racks in the Spring Creek area.  The racks are for elementary school students who ride their bikes to the bus stop.  The I WALK I RUN fundraiser was a great success with several new sponsors and a respectable amount of money raised for youth programs.  The club also awarded a college scholarship to a top student from Spring Creek High School. The club hosted an inbound RYE student from Brazil, and has Abby Fellows, an outbound RYE student, for the first time in more than ten years!

Both of the Elko Clubs participated in an Open World program.  Five journalists and a facilitator from Ukraine were hosted for eight days. The journalists visited many local officials, video-conferenced with he University of Nevada Reno Reynolds School of Journalism, and participated in a GOP election night watch.  One of the results of their visit is that the Rotary Club of Elko Desert

Sunrise has developed a sister club relationship with the Rotary Club of Cherkasy and at least two club members will travel to Ukraine this fall to further explore opportunities to work together.

The two Elko clubs hosted speech contests and selected a single student to represent the Area at the District Speech Contest during the 4 Way Fest.  All four clubs in Area 11 are sending students to RYLA this summer.

Dave Bianchi was the keynote speaker at the Area 11 Foundation Dinner in March.  Three of the four clubs in Area 11 participated directly or through a financial contribution to the fund raising effort.  Over $8,000 was raised in this fun and inspiring evening.

Area 13 Rotary Club of Mammoth Lakes Rotary Club of Mammoth Lakes never sleeps, they are always on the go. On June 23, several club members helped with the Mammoth Half Marathon. Next on the schedule is the Club’s Highway Clean Up scheduled for July 17. The big event for the Club is The Diamond Masquerade Ball, which is scheduled for October 12 at the Snowcreek Athletic Facility.

Rotary Club of Bishop The Rotary Club of Bishop finished the school year reading to elementary students which they have done for several years. Throughout the summer the Rotary Club of Bishop will also participate in the Highway Clean Up program.

Rotary Club of Bishop Sunrise Club members staffed two aid stations for the Bishop High Sierra Ultra Marathon Run held on June 1. The race had 265 runners competing in one of the many race distances offered. Net proceeds for the run help fund the Eastern Sierra

Youth Outdoor Program. This program gives area youth ages 13-18 an opportunity to spend six days climbing and backpacking at no charge.

On June 15, club members held a potluck for our Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) student, who has returned home to Austria. It was a great hosting Theresa for part of the year. The Rotary clubs of Bishop partner to offer RYE experiences for inbound and outbound students. In the coming RYE year, the Clubs will host two inbound students and two outbound students. On June 22, the club is a partner in the Summer Kick-off Picnic held at the Bishop City Park.
