assessmentwhat do you know now? (p. 10):This preliminary assessment is an assessment tool designed to gain an understanding of students’ preexisting knowledge. It can also be used as a benchmark upon which to assess student progress based on the objectives stated on the previous pages.

what have you learned? (p. 11):This post assessment can be utilized as an assessment tool following student completion of the program and student activities. The results of this assessment can be compared against the results of the preliminary assessment to assess student progress.

video review (p. 12):The video review can be used as an assessment tool or as a student activity. There are two sections. The first part contains questions displayed during the program. The second part consists of a five-question video quiz to be answered at the end of the video.

student learning objectivesUpon viewing the video and completing the enclosed student activities, students will be able to do the following:

1 Explain the meaning of a “life cycle” as it relates to living things.2 Know that all living things have a life cycle.3 Identify the parts of a life cycle diagram.4 Understand that a seed is a small capsule that contains a plant embryo.5 Know that if a seed receives air, water, and the correct temperature, it may

germinate.6 Explain that a seed germinates when the embryo inside begins to grow.7 Describe how a young plant looks and grows as it emerges from a seed.8 Define a seedling as a young plant.9 Understand that adult plants are capable of making new plants in a

process called reproduction.10 Identify a flower on a plant and explain its role in reproduction.

program viewing suggestionsThe student master “video review” is provided (p. 12) for distribution to students. You may choose to have your students complete this master while viewing the program or do so upon its conclusion.

The program is approximately 10 to 12 minutes in length and includes a five-question video quiz. Answers are not provided to the video quiz in the video, but are included in this guide on page 9. You may choose to grade student quizzes as an assessment tool or to review the answers in class.

The video is content-rich with numerous vocabulary words. For this reason you may want to periodically stop the video to review and discuss new terminology and concepts.

introducing the programBefore showing the video to students hold up some apple seeds. Ask students to describe them. Write the term “seed” on the board. Explain that a seed is a plant embryo. In other words it’s a miniature plant waiting to grow.

Explain that if the seed receives the correct temperature, water, and light, it will begin to grow. Ask students what they think the seed will grow into. Explain that the seed could grow into a young plant called a seedling. Write the term “seedling” on the board.

Then, ask students what the new plant will become over time as it grows. Explain that it will become an adult apple tree capable of producing fruit. Hold up an apple. Cut the apple in half. Show students the seeds. Write the term “life cycle” on the board. Tell students to pay close attention to the video to learn more about plant life cycles.

01 If you take a minute to look around your home or your neighborhood, you can probably see lots of plants.

02 And, chances are there are several different kinds of plants.03 Some are small, while others are quite large.04 Some have flowers, while others don’t.05 A few may have seeds.06 Some may be young, and just starting to grow,…07 ...while others may be reaching the end of their lives.08 During the next few minutes we are going to take a look at how plants

change during the course of their lives,09 ...as we explore plant life cycles.

10 what is a life cycle?11 Describe how you looked when you were a baby.12 When you were a baby you were quite small.13 You couldn’t walk or talk.14 But as you grew older you got bigger, stronger, and you learned to speak.15 Someday you’ll become an adult, and maybe have your own children.16 The process of living things being born, growing, and changing throughout

life is called a life cycle.17 All living things, including plants have a life cycle. Sometimes life cycles

are represented by circular diagrams like this one.18 The different phases in a life cycle are called stages.19 Even though all living things are not the same most have similar life cycle

stages.20 Let’s now take a look at the beginning life cycle stage of a plant.

21 beginnings22 What do you observe attached to this plant?23 You see many small, dark-colored objects.24 These objects are called seeds. Many plants produce seeds.25 These sunflower seeds, for example, came from this large sunflower

plant.26 What exactly is a seed?27 A seed is a small capsule that contains a plant embryo. Under the right

conditions a seed containing a plant embryo can grow into a plant.28 If the seed receives air, enough water, and the proper temperature it

germinates.29 A seed germinates when the embryo inside begins to grow and develop.30 Seeds are important because they are the beginning stage of the plant

life cycle.31 They’re also important because animals,32 ...as well as people often eat seeds.

33 growing34 In the early days of a germinating seed the root is the the first to

appear,…35 ...followed by the stem. The plant is nourished by food from within the

seed.36 Next, leaves begin to emerge. The young plant enters a new life cycle

stage called a seedling.37 A seedling is a very young plant. 38 Depending on the type of plant, it may continue to grow over many

weeks or many years.39 These large Sequoia trees, for example, have the ability to live and grow

for thousands of years!40 As plants grow they get taller and larger.

41 reproducing42 We have already seen how seeds germinate and grow

43 Where do seeds come from?44 Seeds come from adult plants.45 When a plant becomes fully grown it enters another life cycle stage

called an adult.46 Adult plants are capable of reproducing.47 Reproduction is the process of producing new living things.

48 Adult plants reproduce in different ways. As we discussed, seeds are a common way that plants reproduce.

49 Flowers are the part of the adult plant responsible for making seeds.50 Eventually plants go through the last stage in their life cycle – death.51 Some plants live only a few weeks or months.52 While others, such as this Bristlecone pine tree live to be over 2,000 years

old before dying!

53 video review54 During the past few minutes we explored some of the fascinating features

of plant life cycles.55 We began by defining the term life cycle.56 Then we looked at the beginning stage of the life cycle of many plants –

the germination of a seed.57 Next, we saw how plants grow and develop from seedlings to adults.58 Last, we saw how plants are able to reproduce new plants when they

become adults.59 This completed our exploration of plant life cycles.

60 video quiz61 Fill in the correct word to complete the sentence.62 1. This is a diagram of a life _____.63 2. A plant life cycle often starts with these small objects called ____.64 3. A seed ____ when the embryo begins to grow.65 4. A _____ is a young plant.66 5. ____ plants have the ability to reproduce.
