Grace

Roseta Santiago’s new show of paintings is aptly entitled “Grace,” as the new compositions are deliberately elegant and poised, but also because the title is indicative of Santiago’s personal approach in creating artwork: “Grace is what I am searching for when I look for a person’s interior beauty.” Santiago maintains a rigorous work ethic, entering her studio on a daily basis to paint and approaches the blank canvas each morning with the same intent — respect the creative process, focus on the allure of the unknown, and develop the vision with finesse and refinement. Her handling of oil as the chosen medium is fluid and smooth; she develops figural landscapes and still lifes with equal mastery. Her paintings are fleshed out with an impressionist aesthetic that often purposefully sacrifice realistic clarity for the benefit of an overall emotional imprint. Santiago shares sensations via her canvases, both romantic and spiritual and endows her artwork with dream-like powers that recall flashes of a historical past while simultaneously deriving from present moments of a living future.
