Easter Breakfast The Grace Lutheran Youth invite you to join us

for breakfast between services on Easter Sunday. The menu will include: egg casseroles, toast, muffins, fruit,

orange juice, milk, and coffee. Please come for the food and the fellowship!

A free-will offering to the youth group will be gladly accepted. All monetary donations collected during Easter Breakfast will be used to renovate the YOT (youth room).

The last enemy to be destroyed is death. -1 Corinthians 15:26

For a brief time, while the crucified Jesus lay in a borrowed tomb, it seemed as if death had triumphed once again. Threatened by a messenger of God’s expansive, steadfast love, yet another human mob succumbed to death’s seduction. They chose its bru-tal, silencing power and trusted its empty finality. Death’s murderous re-bellion against the Creator of life seemed unstoppable.

Until that Sunday morning dawned. Mary, Joanna, Mary and the other woman arrived at Jesus’ tomb prepared for a body emptied of life. Instead they discovered the grave emptied of its power and death itself buried in resurrec-tion life. Jesus Christ, the first fruits from the dead, lives!

Now Jesus Christ, the embodiment of God’s compassionate love, is prepar-ing your body for a resurrection life. In that life death can no longer imprison you in a grave nor hold you captive to its violent imagination and destructive power. Joined to Christ by baptism, your body is being brought into his res-urrected life, into Christ’s new crea-tion, and into the ministry of recon-ciliation and peace. In this new day your resurrected service of God’s stead-fast love endures forever.

This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. -Psalm 118:23-24

Child Abuse Prevention: An Imperative Priority

viduals and communities to support children and families.

Lutheran Services in Iowa’s (LSI) programs work to prevent abuse and neglect. Early Childhood services use family-centered educa-tion to help stop abuse before it starts in the home, and our Brem-wood and Beloit Residential Treat-ment Centers empower children of abuse so that they may resolve their past and look forward to a bright

One child will have been abused or neglected by the time you finish reading this. In fact, one child is abused every forty seconds and nearly five children a day die as a result of abuse.

In order to help eliminate these tragedies, April has been named National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This month is a time to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect while encouraging indi-

future.

The support of our partner con-gregations allows LSI to maintain these important programs for the children of Iowa. Thank you for being an important partner in our mission of service to all.

Spring Awakening—Take a Nice Deep Breath Breathe it all in! The beauty of spring! God has made our bod-ies in such a marvelous way! There is some fascinating re-search on breathing I would like to share with you.

You know that good breathing has long been taught to manage stress, childbirth, exercise, etc., but we are finding that it is af-fected by the amygdala. The amygdala is a small area of the brain that we now know can act as an important chemosensor when we breathe incorrectly. A recently published paper by the University of Iowa, Zeiman and colleagues, says the amygdala senses when carbon dioxide is ab-normal in the body and triggers us to change our breathing pat-tern.

When we have abnormally high levels of carbon dioxide in our blood stream, it is caused by not breathing enough, very irregu-larly, or shallow high-chest breathing. This gives us some-thing called respiratory acidosis. The amygdala will trigger an

anxiety, fear/panic response, caus-ing us to overbreathe (take in more oxygen) to balance the car-bon dioxide/oxygen levels. They write that this may be an expla-nation for anxiety and panic disor-ders in people. It also may ex-plain the unusual breathing pat-terns in grief (sighing, shallow breathing, forgetting to breathe), or when we are anxious about tests, speaking in public, depres-sion, etc.

There is also a problem called respiratory alkalosis, or when we overbreathe and take in too much oxygen. This can ALSO cause apprehension, anxiety and fear! So, what is the key? Balanced breathing patterns. Pay attention to how you are breathing. When something is out of balance in our lives, there are physiological and emotional consequences; triggers can cause us to overbreathe or underbreathe.

What is an unusual pattern? Rapid breathing, air hunger, speaking quickly with irregular stops to grab a breath of air—

hyperventilation. OR Frozen breathing, shallow, superficial, breath-holding, forgetting to breathe—hypoventilation. In ei-ther case, breathing rehab is called for to free up the thoracic cage, diaphragm, and use abdomi-nal breathing to correct the pat-tern. An interesting book on the subject is called “Multidisciplinary Approaches to Breathing Pattern Disorders” by Dr. Bradley Chaltow.

As you are taking in the fresh air this spring, it may be time for some “spring awakening” in our lives—what is out of balance in my life? What could be triggering an unusual breathing pattern? Take the time to pay attention to your breathing. God has made our bodies to always try to main-tain “homeostasis” or balance. Give yourself time to balance in a mind-body-spiritual way, and breathe in HIS glory of spring-time!

Easter Breakfast (Middle and High Schoolers)

Young Disciples (age 5 – 6th Grade)

Winter Jam 2010 On Friday, March 12th, a group from Grace attended a Christian music concert at the I Wire-less Center. The Winter Jam 2010 Tour featured Third Day, Newsboys, Tenth Avenue North, Fireflight, speaker Tony Nolan, and a prejam party with Sidewalk Prophets, Robert Pierre, and Revive. Thank you to all of the drivers and all who attended this event. I hope everyone had a great time! -Jill Rice, Youth Director

We are planning and preparing Easter Breakfast for the congregation again this year. There is a sign up sheet on the Christian Education Bulletin Board for the breakfast casseroles and other food items. On Easter morning, plan on meeting at the church at 8:00am to set up and get ready to serve the food. The breakfast will be served between the services. All money raised from Easter Breakfast will be used to renovate the YOT. Contact Jill Rice or Traci Lip-pelgoes with questions.

I hope you have all enjoyed the Tai Chi sessions that we attended during Lent. There will be no Young Disciples the Wednesday before Easter, March 31st. Com.2.Life will resume on Wednesday, April 7th, with the Worship Café at 6:00pm and Young Disciples from 6:30 to 7:30. We will learn about stories from the bible through science, games, crafts, and songs. Come and join the fun!

Christian Education As I begin to acclimate myself to the Christian Education arena at Grace, one avenue I felt was important to wrap my arms around is just how many youth does Grace have the opportunity to serve within our church family. I looked specifically at the age range of 3-18. Did you know that we have approximately 90 youth within this range? Did you also know that we only have approxi-mately 30 youth that participate on a weekly basis within our Sun-

day school and Wednesday night program? That is well less than 50% participation, actually only a third of our youth not an encour-aging statistic, but also one that brings to the forefront opportu-nity. I would encourage all par-ents of the youth within our church family to contact me and let me know what you like about our Christian Education pro-grams, what are your expecta-tions, how you would be willing to actively engage with our youth.

We are all called to be active Dis-ciples of Christ. Active takes many forms, working one on one with our youth, engaging in boards and committees, to teach, selection of curriculum, etc. How is God calling you to act?

Members Present: Nancy Cro-mer, Jan Pohl, Al Bengtson, Carlin Lawhead

Member Absent: Dennis Lange

Also Present: Music Director, Bob Romza and Pastor MacManus

Midweek Lenten Services were discussed and it was generally agreed that they were going well - the only challenge being transi-tioning from meal to worship.

Holy Week Services were re-viewed and planned.

Maundy Thursday will have two services 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The 7:00 p.m. service will include footwashing as part of the sermon and will conclude with stripping of the altar.

Good Friday Service will be at 7:00 p.m.

Easter will have traditional 8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services with some special music. Communion will be by stations.

During the Sunday School hour on April 11th and 18th a forum will be held in the Social Hall to dis-cuss the possibility of one Sunday morning service. Members of the Worship and Music Board and the Church Council are encouraged to be involved.

Carlin is attempting to gather background info from other simi-lar congregations who have gone to one Sunday service. A special congregational meeting will be held between services on May 16th to vote on a proposed sched-ule change if a proposal is made.

Other subjects discussed were the

need for increased worship assis-tant/acolyte training. Jan Pohl volunteered to work with Tibe to accomplish it.

Faith Story

“Every doubt, therefore, is based on a leap of faith." (Timothy Keller. THE REASON FOR GOD: Belief in an Age of Skepticism)

Doubt was and is a large part of my life. Doubts that have – at times – taken me away from the faith that I proclaimed at my con-firmation 40 years ago. Doubts that, ever since I was a college stu-dent, questioned beliefs (personal, political, professional, fiscal, sex-ual, and parental) and that have caused me lots of sleepless nights.

During college I took courses on all the major religions and ana-mistic beliefs, Bible and Torah studies, Bible as literature, phi-losophy, politics and many other the humanities. I engaged in all the rituals of organized religion. And, because I found my personal expression in music, participated in many different practices through the music that was re-quired. Being a blonde hair/blue eyed individual sometimes brought raised eyebrows – such as when I joined an African-American gospel group, directed a Baptist choir, or served as a cantor for a Jewish temple’s high holiday celebration.

The questioning found me also searching for truths in transcen-

dental meditation, mysticism and even agnosticism. It was during my darkest period of doubt that I took a conscious ‘leave of absence’ from religious searching. Like many young people away from home, family and friends for the first time a quick decent into worldliness ensued. I knew what I wanted and sought to get it. Ulti-mately all these ‘things’ left as big a hole in my psyche as my previ-ous religious searching.

So dark was that hole that I tried to brighten it with alcohol – it seemed to work for my father, why not me. I was fortunate, how-ever, in that my first binge was also my last. The commander of my unit at the time gave me an ultimatum -- find yourself. He made sure that I had the profes-sional, religious and military help to work on that (read: forced hos-pital visits, mandatory church ser-vice attendance and counseling, and lots of extra duty). It was dur-ing that time I first saw what Christianity really meant. The commander showed me grace: he never wrote me up (which would have ruined any career I thought I might have), participated in the hospital counseling sessions and sat with me at services. And, he let me suffer the consequences of my behaviors with the assignment

of duties beyond my day-to-day responsibilities. Mostly, he and his hand-picked helpers listened to my questions; my doubts; even my fears.

How can God allow…?

Would a Christian say such things? Do such things? Be so (closed, bias, hypocritical) minded?

Why can’t I see/believe/have faith as others have?

During one of our extended chats he asked me if I really needed all those external influ-ences, or could I look to a greater power and let Him fill the hole. The answer that I came to was that I had to take a leap of faith that God is greater than my mind can grasp; and, because of that I can’t know for sure what the an-swers are until I experience His grace face-to-face. I can, however, live a life that continues to seek good things for all people and trust that His grace will pull me through trying times (which it has). I can enjoy music and art in all of its forms. Enjoy peoples of all walks of life and the challenges they bring to my understanding of graceful living.
