We are delighted to launch our new quarterly newsletter, Grace Notes, to keep you in touch with our vision and our activities — especially in this dynamic period as we develop our strategic plan, and welcome new clergy to our team, Jude Harmon and Andy Lobban. In the two years since I arrived, I have enjoyed meeting so many of you, and discovering how important Grace Cathedral is to you as the ‘go-to’ place for serious conversation, thoughtful preaching, outstanding arts events and beautiful liturgy. Our aim at Grace Cathedral is to feed the soul, mind and body, through ministry and worship, education and the arts, outreach and service. Our hope, also, is to help forge a moral imagination — a way of looking at the world by which we can make imaginative leaps to expand our communities and commitments beyond our own interests. I have talked a lot about this idea at Grace Cathedral this past year, and in other contexts such as the Aspen Ideas Festival. My thinking about the important role that the arts play in forging that moral imagination was significantly shaped by conversations with the actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith, our first resident artist this past spring. Anna spoke at The Forum, preached, and performed the play we had commissioned from her — On Grace — in the nave, with the pews removed. It was a great privilege to have Anna in our midst for a month, and we are delighted that she continues her relationship with the cathedral as one of our new trustees. The Forum is a central plank in our education and community engagement program and, since relaunching it last September, we have brought many renowned speakers, who have inspired and engaged our large and lively audience during that Sunday 9:30 a.m. slot, from composer John Adams to actress Jane Lynch. This fall, as we enter into the heat of election season, we have a roster of acclaimed speakers who will address key issues facing this nation. Tom Steyer, Farallon Capital Management founder, will speak about our responsibilities to the world; former Secretary of State George Shultz will reflect on a life in politics; Bishop Gene Robinson will consider the controversies about gay marriage; and Stanford Professor Tanya Luhrmann will look at evangelical religion in American life. The Forum continues its com-mitment to the performing arts as we welcome Jake Heggie, composer of the opera Moby Dick. Full details of the Forum appear on page 6. Our music program is a prominent component of our commitment to the arts, and I look forward to seeing you at one of our beloved Christmas concerts in December, always a highlight of the San Francisco holiday season. On Sunday, October 7 we mark St. Francis Day — patron saint of this city and of animals. Bring your pet to be blessed, and hear renowned Bishop of New Hampshire, Gene Robinson, preach at the 11a.m. Choral Eucharist.

On Thursday, October 25 at 5:15 p.m., we induct our newest choristers into our Choir of Men and Boys at Choral Evensong. It is always a moving moment as the oldest choirboys give the youngest the final garment that marks their full choir membership — their white surplice.

On Sunday, November 11, come to remember those you love and yet no longer see, at a special All Souls’ Requiem Service at 11 a.m. Our Choir of Men and Boys will be singing the rarely heard setting of the mass by twentieth-century English composer, Herbert Howells.

And on Sunday, December 2 at 3 p.m., begin your preparations for Christmas as the season of Advent begins, with a special service of music sung by our Choir of Men and Boys, and readings from different stations around the cathedral. A delicious tea follows in the Dining Room.

Central to our cathedral life is worship. Grace Cathedral is a wonderful and extraordinary space for contemplating and evoking a sense of the transcendent, with its grand nave, beautiful stained glass, spacious labyrinth, intimate chapels, fine music and stimulating, intelligent preaching. Highlights of our daily round of worship include four services on Sundays — 8:30 a.m. Eucharist; 11 a.m. Choral Eucharist; 3 p.m. Choral Evensong and 6 p.m. Contemplative Eucharist on the labyrinth — as well as Choral Evensong sung by our Choir of Men and Boys on Thursdays at 5:15 p.m.

new clergy

This fall, we welcome two new Minor Canons, the Revs. Jude Harmon and Andy Lobban, to three-year appointments. Jude and Andy share in the whole round of liturgical leadership, preaching, teaching and pastoral care. Jude has particular responsibility for young adult and emerging ministries, and all of our Grace After Hours events. Andy focuses on coordinating social outreach, giving our congregation opportunities to serve those in need and collaborating with existing programs in the city and diocese. Jude arrived from the Diocese of Massachusetts as a Deacon and is expected to be ordained as a priest later this year. He was educated at Haverford College, Harvard Divinity School and Virginia Theological Seminary. He lived and worked with the Society of St John the Evange-list (SSJE); interned at New England’s largest day shelter and St. Mark’s, Capitol Hill; and worked as a Mission Partner in the Diocese of Haiti. Andy, recently ordained a priest, comes from San Antonio in the Diocese of West Texas. He worked as Chaplain and Diocesan Spokesperson for Good Samaritan Community Services of West Texas. Born in the Bay Area, he was educated at MIT, UC Berkeley and the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, TX. He returns to the Bay Area with his wife Olga Dubois Lobban and their two daughters.

On November 16, 1913, Grace Cathedral welcomed its first boy choristers. With that, the Choir of Men and Boys was born. Ninety-nine years have passed, and now the Choir of Men and Boys prepares to welcome its second century with great fanfare! Premieres of newly-commissioned works by beloved and emerging composers, visiting choirs, and special events are included in this year of celebration. Gifts in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Choir of Men and Boys are vital to the education of choristers, supporting our resident choir, our ability to present visiting artists and make music accessible to all.
