All of us act the way we do because of our values – those ideals

so integral to our being that they define who we are and how we choose to

live. Other people know us by how we live out our values more than by what

we say. Actions speak louder than words.

Since 1926, Graceworks Lutheran Services has been guided by values that

shape our identity and motivate our service to others facing challenging

circumstances. We express those values as:

• FaithfulnesstoChrist • WholenessofLife • EqualityandJustice • QualityofService • Integrity • StewardshipofResources

In many ways, all of the Graceworks values are summed up in the first value.

Remaining faithful to Christ leads us to demonstrate behaviors that reflect

the other five values. The stories in this annual report reveal many ways in

which Graceworks applies all of its values to help others achieve wholeness in

their lives.

The Bethany Village commitment to quality of service supported Pat’s

motivation to recover independence and resume activities and relation-

ships that enhance her experience of wholeness.

Emma’s sense of “home” reflects the commitment of Graceworks Enhanced

Living to equality and justice by helping vulnerable people rise above many

challenges posed by disabilities.

Cindy’s restored dignity shines through her bright new smile made possible

through the compassion and quality of response to her needs demonstrated

by the Graceworks Once Around Shop and Emergency Assistance Program.

Exercising good stewardship of resources resulted in better quality of life for

residents of a Graceworks Housing Services community who enjoy new

walking paths and outdoor gathering spaces as the result of a refinancing.

We are thankful for the faithfulness of many congregations, donors, volunteers,

staff and other friends who express their values through their commitment to

Graceworks Lutheran Services. Many of their efforts are acknowledged in this

annual report.

“The staff was very helpful and kept reminding me of what I needed to do.”

Pat Moore’s life at Bethany Village has taken amazing twists and turns. As Bethany residents age, sometimes their changing needs require moving

from cottages, villas or apartments to areas that provide assisted living, reha-bilitation or nursing care. Through sheer determination, Pat has leveraged the encouragement of Bethany’s person-centered staff to move from areas that provide more supportive care back to a more independent lifestyle in her Vista Place apartment.

In 2006 Pat, a retired school principal who lived in a cottage at Bethany Village, experienced several health-related issues. She was admitted to the Bethany Rehabilitation Center.

Pat was unable to return to her cottage. Instead she moved into a Cascade residence within the Linden House where she could receive full-time nursing care.

Jenita Sullenger was manager of Cascade when Pat arrived there. Soon it was apparent to Jenita that Pat had it in her to once again live independently.

“Her spirit of independence and our focus on quality of service for each resi-dent led us to develop the best plan for her to be able to live independently again,” Jenita explained.

Soon Pat was well enough to move into Arbor North, an assisted living residence, where she received support for her physical needs and desire to regain her independence. “The staff was very helpful and kept remind-ing me of what I needed to do to get better and be able to live on my own,” explained Pat.

“It was difficult for me to accept some of my limitations but I realized that the sooner I did, the sooner I could live independently. I had to do things like learn to scoot myself up in bed. I never thought I would have to learn to do it but I did what I had to. It was difficult for me to walk and I had a hard time with the fact that I needed a walker but when I realized a walker meant independence, I began to accept it.”

Pat progressed in her recovery so much that she moved from assisted living and now resides in her Vista Place apartment with renewed independence.

Pat enjoys her life. She travels, stays involved with her alma mater, Otterbein College, and pursues her passion of playing mah-jongg (a Chinese puzzle game) regularly with a group of friends.

3

Pat’s spirit of independence helped her to be able to live independently again.

“Now we can sit back and have comfort in knowing Emma will be fine.”

Page 7: Graceworks 2009 Annual Report

Emma announces suddenly: “I’m going to make cookies for everybody!” She excitedly cuts along patterns pre-traced in the dough, including one

of her current love, Kung Fu Panda.

Her parents, Mary Lou and Tim, smile at the thought that their 20-year-old daughter, born with cerebral palsy and difficult behavior disorders, thinks so fondly of her housemates. They spent years trying different schools and residences in which she could learn to have respectful relationships with

others. They’re happy she has grown to love living in a Graceworks Enhanced Living residence in Cincinnati for individuals with developmental disabilities.

“Emma is a different person today,” says Tim.

Mary Lou and Tim had wondered whether Emma would ever be able to live independently as an adult. She progressed through schools, but struggled with relationships outside of family. They sought a residence where Emma could get “focused, consistent attention” in a place that felt like home.

They loved the care they saw in Graceworks Enhanced Living homes: the gentle and patient interaction, the staff’s professionalism and the family atmosphere. The staff served all individuals with equality and encouraged residents to treat each other as they would like to be treated.

Emma moved into the home nearly three years ago. Emma’s parents worried about her transition. “I had fears I would get a call about something,” says Mary Lou. “But they never gave up on her.” Emma began developing relationships. She went each day to a local workshop, worked productively and earned a paycheck. Her parents saw her grow in personal responsibility and awareness of others. She continued toward high school graduation in June 2009. “She is evolving into a beautiful young woman,” says Program Manager Sarah Schutter.

But when Emma left for weekends with her parents, she made her feelings clear. Sarah would routinely say, “See you when you come home,” and Emma would emphatically answer: “This is not home.”

After two years, Emma’s parents and Sarah started seeing her take a large step toward independence. “A couple weeks ago when she left with her parents, she called this her ‘home,’ ” says Sarah.

As Sarah is speaking, Emma goes to the kitchen, brings freshly baked cookies and gives one to each person. “Merry Christmas,” she says.

5

Emma needed focused, consistent attention in a place that felt like home.

“The Lord led me down here somehow to rebuild my life.”

Cindy (not her real name) came to the Once Around Shop in Eaton owning just the clothes on her back. Over months of receiving food

and clothes she began to open up to Jenny McCarty, manager of the shop and Emergency Assistance Program, but she never smiled.

One day Cindy walked in with a toothache. Embarrassed to open her mouth before, she couldn’t bear the pain any longer and was about to lose her health coverage.

Jenny found a dentist who pulled Cindy’s teeth right away, then followed through with fitting and adjusting new dentures. The Once Around Emergency Assistance program provided more than half the money needed for her dental work and received donations from local churches

to cover the remainder.

“The day she got her lower denture, the first stop she made was to the Once Around Shop,” says Jenny. “For the first time in years she was all smiles. She said the last couple of years had been

the hardest in her life and no one seemed to care or want to help her until she came to the Once Around Shop.”

Cindy left the U.S. Navy with a disability after serving in the Desert Storm conflict in 1991. She escaped an abusive relationship with neither posses-sions nor pride. At the Once Around Shop, she found people who cared about more than her immediate need for food and clothing.

“When you walk in here, you don’t lose your dignity,” she says. “You can tell they are Christians by the way they treat you. They know your name, they care about you. It’s not just carting food out the door or getting clothes off the rack. They helped me get my face off the floor.”

As Graceworks managed a network of resources to help her feel whole, Cindy now faithfully cares for others by finding ways to help women at crossroads in their lives. “I’m here by the grace of God,” she says.

“You’ve got to give back.”

“This is not just apartments. This is home.”

Page 11: Graceworks 2009 Annual Report

Like never before, residents last year tended to vegetables and flowers, enjoyed impromptu cookouts, walked laps or just sat outside and

talked. “In the summertime, we have a ball,” says Ida Payton, a resident of Shepherd of the Valley Community, Graceworks Housing Services affordable apartments in LaGrange, Kentucky. “We all get out there.”

Residents enjoyed their place in the sun because of Graceworks’ steward-ship of resources. Graceworks refinanced the property in 2007, generating proceeds and interest savings to cover improvements that were completed during 2008. In the last 18 months, Graceworks has refinanced seven of its 18 apartment communities, generating cash and interest savings to fund various improvements and create reserves for future replacements.

Faithful stewardship of financial resources strengthened both the Shepherd of the Valley building and the community, says Jackie Fiser, Site Manager. “We asked residents, ‘What would you like to see?’ They wanted more places to hang out, to be with each other.”

So Graceworks not only replaced the 20-year-old roof and installed new energy-efficient windows, but also paved a walking path and an expanded patio with a picnic shelter. Residents flocked to the outdoors. “It’s like a parade some days on the walkway,” says Cindy Dunaway, Service Coordinator. Residents found new opportunities to chat as they admired each others’ gardens or shared in a cookout.

Lana Carter says the refinancing paved new paths for her powered wheelchair. “Before, I could only enjoy what I saw from the window. Now, I can take my chair all around the building to see everybody’s flowers.”

She says the Graceworks staff has nurtured a caring community: “This wouldn’t happen if they did not have love in their hearts for us.” The improvements help residents and staff continue to build their community around potluck dinners, exercise groups, Bible studies, movie nights, prayer groups and a two-hour daily “chat time.”

“This is not just apartments,” says resident Ethel Knapper. “This is home.”

9

“I’m 84 years old and I walk two miles every day,” says Lois Cunningham, nearing completion of her daily routine on a misty 44-degree January day. “I love it.”

The Graceworks Values are at the heart of our mission to help people experience dignity

and wholeness. Through a wide range of services, we seek to help older adults, indi-

viduals with disabilities, persons with mental retardation and developmental disabilities,

and individuals facing financial or personal challenges to experience stability in their

lives. During 2008, Graceworks provided more than $3.5 million of uncompensated

charity care that was not paid by user fees or government funding. In addition, as part

of a “Community Impact Report” published by Graceworks in 2008, an independent

expert calculated that Graceworks generated $232 million in economic impact for the

Dayton area and tri-state region.

2008 Residential Care Highlights

More than 2,000 individuals were served through residential services of Bethany Village,

Bethany Rehabilitation Center, Graceworks Enhanced Living and Graceworks Housing

Services.

Bethany Village The number of residents living independently in Bethany apartments,

cottages and villas increased to 391 as parts of a major expansion and renovation project

were completed in 2008. Another 60 people lived in assisted living residences, and

approximately 250 people lived in the state-of-the-art Linden House and received full-time

skilled nursing and memory supportive care.

Bethany Rehabilitation Center A total of 711 older adults experienced skilled

nursing care and individualized rehabilitation programs as they recovered from surgery or

hospitalization. Fifty-six percent of the people served returned to their previous homes

after recovery.

Graceworks Enhanced Living More than 150 individuals with mental retardation

and developmental disabilities lived in safe, caring environments in 28 homes in Butler,

Greene, Hamilton and Montgomery counties. Ten individuals relocated to a new home in

a safer community in Hamilton County. Seven persons experienced care from

Graceworks for the first time in three additional settings in Greene County.

Graceworks Housing Services More than 700 income-eligible elderly or disabled

residents experienced affordable housing in 18 Graceworks apartment communities

in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. On-site employees worked to establish caring and stable

environments in well-maintained and conveniently located apartment buildings. Service

coordinators helped residents find and obtain needed services to allow them to age

in place.

2008 Community Care Highlights

Our broad array of community-based services helped many individuals and families gain

stability in their lives in the midst of trying circumstances.

Adoption Services Sixty-two children joined loving adoptive families, including 38

children from other countries and 24 domestic infants. Home study assessments made

legal adoption possible for 20 additional children living with step-parents, grandparents or

guardians. In addition, 57 individuals and families received birthparent counseling or

birthparent assessment services.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service Nearly 3,500 people experienced one-on-

one financial counseling, and Graceworks helped 1,500 people manage their debts

through the Consumer Credit Counseling Service debt management program.

Graceworks housing counselors assisted 29 families to become homeowners and

helped 299 families avoid foreclosure. Over 1,300 individuals received bankruptcy pre-

filing counseling and nearly 500 individuals received bankruptcy pre-discharge financial

education. Approximately 3,300 individuals learned how to manage their finances

through financial education classes or workshops. Graceworks counseled 15 senior

citizens who were considering a reverse mortgage.

Interfaith Care Team Ministry A total of 68 families received life-skills education,

family mentorship, advocacy and support through case management services in their

homes in targeted neighborhoods. Services were made possible through an ecumenical

partnership with Catholic Social Services. Over 1,088 individuals received material and

financial assistance and referrals to support their basic and emergency needs.

Once Around Shop and Emergency Assistance Program A total of 5,720

individuals received food, clothing or financial assistance for shelter, utilities and

medications through the Preble County Emergency Assistance program. Thousands more

received affordable clothing and household items at the Once Around Shop in Eaton.

Senior Companion Program A total of 280 older persons were able to maintain

independence in their own homes with assistance through friendly visits and respite care.

Elderly persons in Montgomery, Miami, Preble, Greene and Clark counties received visits

from 53 trained volunteers who gave 46,847 hours of faithful service. As part of the

National Senior Service Corps, Senior Companions offer companionship, friendship and

light assistance to persons who strive to maintain an independent lifestyle.

Volunteers A total of 772 volunteers gave 98,651 hours of professional, administrative

and direct support service – a value of $1,337,714 – to faithfully care for the needs of

those whom we serve.

Graceworks Enhanced Living widens its service

During 2008 Graceworks Enhanced Living expanded its services into new settings to faithfully care for individuals with mental retardation and develop-

mental disabilities.

In February, Graceworks Enhanced Living began providing services in a new Greene County condominium community for two women in their shared residence and a man living in his own unit.

Ten individuals moved to a beautiful new home in June in Hamilton County after Graceworks overcame challenges to relocate them from another location in Cincin-nati. In 1997, Graceworks began providing services in their former home after the previous provider

was found guilty of fraud. Graceworks worked first to provide excellent care. Then, as neighborhood safety declined, Graceworks worked with a developer to build a new home in a more secure and stable community. “Our residents have the same basic desire that all of us share: to live in a safe, loving home,” said Deb Lyle, Administrator, Graceworks Enhanced Living.

Graceworks now provides services in 28 homes where 150 residents live with 24-hour staffing. In addition, Graceworks operates a Day Program serving 20 individuals.

Bethany Village expands community, welcomes new residents

One of the largest expansion projects in Bethany Village history continued to transform the continuing care retirement community in Centerville during 2008. Construction began in Spring 2007, to be completed in Spring 2009.

The 11-story Tower residential building was renamed “Vista Place” on January 1 after completion of major renovations that included a total exterior surface remodeling with new windows and brick panels that enhance the functionality and appearance of the building.

Residents began moving into 30 newly constructed villas in April. Construc- tion of Park Ridge Place – with 30 spacious apartments, a parking garage and an outdoor plaza deck – was completed in December and opened its doors to new residents in January 2009.

At the heart of the expanded community is a Vil-lage Center that opened in December. The Village Center, which connects the Homestead to Vista Place, has already become the focus of social events, informal gatherings, fitness and educational programs for the entire Bethany community.

Residents will begin moving into the new Memory Support Center in Spring 2009. The state-of-the-art center will provide specialized care in a homelike setting for 56 individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairment. It replaces the ex-isting Bethany Village memory support area which is more than 40 years old.
