It’s Graduation Time! The 97th Annual Commencement

will be held Friday June 6, 2014

at 7:30 p.m. in the Big Lake

High School GymnasiumThere is no need for allocation of “tickets” for the

commencement ceremony. In the past, there has been ampleseating for the families of our graduates.

Immediate family, grandparents, or those needingseating/wheelchair accommodations will be given access to the

main floor. All others should be seated in the bleachersand/or west end of the gymnasium.

The doors will not open until 6:30 pm. We welcome you toattend this semi-formal affair as we wish our seniors well and

congratulate their success.

Awards banquet honors the seniorsJennifer Edwards

Staff WriterBig Lake High School held their aca-

demic awards banquet Wed., April 23.Board Member Tom Pietrzak welcomed

everyone to the awards.“More than ever life is busy,” he said.

“Students are busy with school, work,sports and getting ready for college, yet allthese students have chosen to be active insomething greater than themselves.”The ideals of service, character and

leadership are assumed in NHS members,Pietrzak said. “What we are seeking are scholars and

leaders who can work well with others in agroup,” he said. “You have committed todoing that.”This year’s Senior NHS officers,

President Nicole Roof, April Harrison,Connor Johnson, Morgan Turk, Laura Joreand Kelli Poffenberger, recited the historyof the NHS, lit candles and led the newinductees in the oath.“Our senior members have given end-

less hours of service, laughter and leader-ship,” said Ms. Tetzner.Physics Teacher Sam Kilpela presented

the Drake Award for Physics to Troy Berg.

Berg, who often scores 100% on his tests,Kilpela said, receives a four-year scholar-ship to Drake University.

Knowledge BowlShe also introduced the seniors from the

Knowledge Bowl team, now 20 studentsstrong. Two teams from Big Lake went onto compete in the regional competition, shesaid.Activities Coordinator Thayne Johnson

presented the AAA Award to senior CassieJahn.Assistant Principal Angie Folch

announced Big Lake has two nationalmerit Scholar finalists. Troy Berg and JohnWallace earned the honor.Ms. Folch also introduced the A honor

submitted ArticleWhile chalkboards are probably a thing

of the past for most classrooms, the chalkdrawing performed by Bob Upgren wasdefinitely a unique message to the audi-ence. The 27th Annual Students ofExcellence Banquet and RecognitionCeremony was Wed., April 30, at theRiver’s Edge Convention Center in St.Cloud with close to 600 attending theevent. The evening was dedicated to honoring

the top 150 high school seniors from morethan 38 Region 7 high schools. The hon-orees were nominated by their school ordistrict and received a plaque recognizingtheir accomplishment and a certificatefrom Gov. Dayton. Over the past 27 yearsthere have been 4,224 honored seniors.While attendees waited for the doors toopen, animated conversations in the crowdrevolved around upcoming prom, gradua-tion and plans for college. The evening began with a welcome and

congratulations by Rob Cavanna, execu-tive director of Resource. Following themeal, keynote speaker, Bob Upgren deliv-ered his message “Igniting a Purpose –How to find your true calling in life”.Through his message and the chalk art, hechallenged students to pay attention andintentionally consider your vocation. “Ichallenge you to lead a significant life. Byconcentrating on your gifts and how youcan be a contributor you will achieve suc-cess. And, a significant life will be a suc-

cessful life,” Upgren challenged.The Presiding Superintendent for the

evening was Dr. Julia Espe from thePrinceton School District. “I am honoredto be here representing the superintendentsand pass along our congratulations to eachof this evening’s honorees,” she said.Ken Anderson, Board Chair at Resource,

extended congratulations and a word ortwo of advice to the honorees. “Everytime a door closes, another door opens.There are two attributes that will take youa long way – your persistence and yourability to adapt. So keep knocking ondoors and be ready to change as doors willlead you in many directions,” saidAnderson Minnesota’s Commissioner of

Education, Dr. Brenda Cassellius, wasunable to attend but sent a letter congratu-lating honorees.Criteria for selection to the Recognition

Event is at the discretion of each schoolbut based upon recommended guidelines.Schools can choose two to four seniors andhave the option to invite favorite teachers,coaches and administrators. The event is sponsored by the participat-

ing school districts, Blue Cross/BlueShield, and Resource Training &Solutions. Sandra Cordie, Director ofEducational Programs for the agency,organizes the event. Upgren’s message concluded with

Top 10% have big ambitions

Graduation Day is approaching fast andthe Class of 2014 is preparing for theirnext big adventure in life.A few of the top students shared their

feelings in a questionnaire about theirfavorite classes, unforgettable memoriesand their plans for the future.Almost all the students who were in the

top group among this year’s graduates saidthey had attended Big Lake Schools alltheir lives, or at least, since kindergarten.All the students participated we asked

except one participated in extracurricularactivities, most often sports but also bandor choir, Knowledge Bowl and NationalHonor Society.Of all the things students said they

would miss about Big Lake, playing sportsand seeing their friends daily were high onthe list.Sydney Butalla said she would miss

being part of the swimming and divingteam, ‘...and all the friends I have made.”Alec Green said he would miss playing

hockey and lacrosse with his friends.Many more followed that sentiment, ButJohn Wallace wasn’t the only one to say hewould miss the hard-working teachers themost.

Teachers“Each and every class teacher and class

was unique and memorable to us,” he said.Alexandra Smith agreed.“I will miss my teachers the most,” she

said. “They are always so fun and alsovery understanding about how stressfulschool can be.”The list of favorite teachers and favorite

classes included but was not limited to Ms.Bowen, teaching chemistry, Mr.Boeckman and his economics class, Mr.Thiele, teaching biology and Ms.McCormack, who teaches math.“I will miss all the wonderful, interest-

ing, ridiculous and hilarious teachershere,” said Olivia Crocker.But the class is ready to graduate and

move on. While not everyone has their lifecourse charted, all the top students plan toattend college and look forward to a brightfuture. Having a home, a family and asteady job was a recurrent theme.“Having a home with a family,” says

Sam Dokkebakken, who plans to attendWinona State.Connor Johnson, who plans to attend

NDSU to pursue a degree in civil engineer-ing, says in 10 years from now he wants tobe, “Happy, working in North Dakota withthe girl of my dreams.”

TravelMorgan Turk, who plans to attend St.

Olaf and major in biology, was one of thestudents who has plans to travel once hereducation is complete. “I am going to be traveling as a mission-

ary in the Doctors Without Boarders pro-

gram,” she says. “Life gets a whole lot eas-ier when you learn to love yourself.”Kelli Poffenberger wants the best of

both worlds. When asked where she couldsee her-self in 10 years from now she said,“Raising a family, hopefully traveling allover the world and loving whatever careerI end up in.”Troy Berg plans to attend the University

of Minnesota to study chemistry andchemi-cal engineering. Troy says his favoritememory is algebra class and physics withMr. Kilpela, “.. because he somehow man-aged to put up with us.”Sydney Butalla plans to attend the

University of Denver and hopes to becomean optometrist who travels around theworld and enjoys spending time with fam-ily.”

“Seriously, it will save you lots of stress.”Michael Doperalski is also on his way to

Mankato to major in business.“Have as much fun as you can because it

goes by fast and never change who youare,” he says.Olivia Crocker, who took part in track

and cross country as well as KnowledgeBowl, NHS and pep band, plans to attendGustavus Adolphus and become a nurseanesthetist. She looks forward to workingin a hospital.“Don’t ever miss out on an opportunity

to learn something or to help someone orto just have fun,” she said. “Be involvedand stay involved.”

Ramsey Community College for his gener-als. He says his favorite memories arefrom Ms. Adams class with his friends,Justin Langan, Steven Lindula and ZachMuller. While his career future is undecid-ed, his advice for younger students is shortand simple. “Do your homework.”Gymnast Laura Jore plans to attend the

University of Minnesota Twin Cities cam-pus to study nutrition. she hopes to work asa registered dietician and stay involved inthe gymnastics community as a judge.“Apply yourself,” says Laura. “Make

the most of the time you have.”Derek Wick says he enjoyed playing

football and trap shooting. He plans to jointhe Air Force after graduation. His adviceis to stay calm.“Don’t let anything get you too stressed

out,” he says.Enjoy Yourself

Kayla Chouinard has plans to attendUniversity of Minnesota Duluth after grad-uation. Kayla worked on the yearbook aswell as being a member of the NationalHonor Society and a basketball manager.“Be yourself and have fun,“ she says.

degree in psychology and open her ownpractice. April enjoys concert band, NHS,Student Council, softball, track and volun-teering with Youth Development/YouthServices. Her favorite memories include playing

the bongos at the Evening of Fine Arts,concert band with Mrs. Olson, Fridaynight football games, spirit week andstorming the field after homecoming.Justin Langan intends to finish his gen-

erals at Anoka Ramsey CommunityCollege while he decides on his major.Eventually he hopes to become a familyman with a good job.
